At least one person was killed and five others injured in Johannesburg on Sunday, police said, after security forces clashed with looters in the latest outbreak of xenophobic violence. South Africa’s biggest city and other areas were hit by a surge of attacks against businesses owned by migrants in the last week, leaving at least 10 people dead and prompting protests from several African countries. Riot police fired stun grenades and rubber bullets on Sunday to break up crowds targeting shops in the city’s Central Business District (CBD), police said. “We can confirm one person was reported dead,” police spokesperson Xlolani Fihla told AFP. “We can’t confirm the cause of death.” Five more people were reported injured, Captain Kay Makhubele, a national police force official, told eNCA news. Police later said on Twitter the CBD, Jeppestown and Hillbrow neighbourhoods were under control. South Africa is a major destination for economic migrants from neighbouring Lesotho, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. But others come from South Asia and Nigeria looking for work in the continent’s second-largest economy. The recent violence soured ties between South Africa and Nigeria, which summoned Pretoria’s envoy and boycotted an economic summit in Cape Town in protest. Officials said several Nigerian businesses were attacked and burned down, though they said no Nigerians were killed. Foreign workers often face anti-immigrant violence in South Africa, where they compete against locals for jobs, particularly in low-skilled industries. In 2008, xenophobic attacks left 62 people dead, while in 2015, seven were killed in attacks in Johannesburg and Durban. Amid recent attacks on Nigerians and other foreign nationals in South Africa, authorities in the country are anticipating President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit. A statement for the South African presidency on Saturday explains that the Nigerian leader would undertake a State Visit to the country sometime in October. The Nigerian government had announced on August 10 that the President would visit South Africa next month, but it is unclear if the visit will go as scheduled. This comes amid growing concerns after Nigeria pulled out of the World Economic Summit taking place in the country over the attacks on its citizens. Despite recent events, the South Africa government is optimistic that President Buhari’s state visit to the country will go as scheduled. However, the Nigerian government has yet to confirm if the visit would take place. This followed a meeting between South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and the special envoy from Nigeria, Ambassador Ahmed Abubakar, which held on Friday afternoon in Pretoria. Ambassador Abubakar, who is the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), conveyed President Buhari’s concern at recent events in South Africa, in the context of the strong and cordial relations that characterise the interaction between the two countries. On his part, President Ramaphosa reaffirmed the relationship between the countries as being firm and strong, adding that both nations have been resolute in their shared commitment to building an Africa at peace with itself and others. The South African leader said President Buhari conveyed his commitment to the values of prosperity and the advancement of the continent, shared by both countries and pledged Nigeria’s readiness to assist his country in finding lasting solutions to the challenges. Read the full statement from the South African presidency below: His Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari will undertake a State Visit to South Africa in October 2019 to reinforce the strong bonds between the two countries and jointly develop responses to challenges affecting people and businesses in South Africa and Nigeria. In the wake of public violence in South Africa and developments in Nigeria around South African businesses based in the West African country, President Cyril Ramaphosa held discussions yesterday, Friday 6 September 2019, with Ambassador Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, Special envoy of The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari. The visit to Pretoria by the Special Envoy followed a recent meeting between Presidents Ramaphosa and Buhari in Yokohama, Japan, on the sidelines of the Summit of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development. In yesterday’s discussion, the Special Envoy conveyed President Buhari’s concern at recent events in South Africa, in the context of the strong and cordial relations that characterise the interaction between the two countries. President Buhari conveyed his commitment to the values of prosperity and the advancement of Africa that are shared by South Africa and Nigeria. Nigeria stands ready to assist South Africa in establishing the root causes of and developing sustainable solutions to the challenges concerned. President Buhari has undertaken that where challenges emerge in Nigeria, the Nigerian government will act against lawlessness and the targeting of South African assets in Nigeria. President Ramaphosa reaffirmed South Africa-Nigeria relations as being firm and strong and said the two partners were resolute in their shared commitment to build an Africa at peace with itself and others. Engineer Silas Adekunle, who is the highest paid Robotic Engineer in the world and also the founder of AR Robots Makers, has decided to shutdown his business operations in UK. The Nigerian born Robotic Engineer shut down Reach Robotics, in Bristol, United Kingdom and this shocked his UK based robotics consumers. He said he’s going to focus on new things. Adekunle made the announcement on LinkedIn. One of the Co-founders John Rees confirmed that “the decision has been made to close the business and appoint administrators, effective as of 02/09/2019,” according to a report by therobotreport.com. Below is Adekunle’s LinkedIn post: “Unfortunately, for Reach Robotics, in its current form at least, today marks the end of that journey. “I am immensely proud of what we have achieved. Since founding Reach Robotics at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory, we made huge strides in our technology both in terms of our hardware and app development. We took MekaMon from prototype to market, introduce the world to the first gaming robot with seamless AR integration, launched in dozens of territories and developed a unique education offering that will live on through many initiatives. “This simply could not have happened without the highly skilled and creative people that have been part of the Reach Robotics journey. I speak for myself and my fellow co-founders Chris Beck and John Rees when I say it has been a privilege and we have no doubt that they will continue to innovate and enrich the sector. Personally, I am grateful for the experience, lessons learnt, the connections and the opportunity to inspire young people from under-represented backgrounds in STEM and entrepreneurship. “I am thankful to everyone who has been a part of this journey, from my co-founders Chris and John, who have been there through thick and thin, to members of the management team who were supportive in the most difficult of times, Jonathan Quinn, Kathryn Green, Philip Green just to name a few. “Thank you to all of our investors, advisers, mentors, family and friends over the years. Special thanks to UWE, Bristol Robotics Laboratory, Pervasive Media Studio, SetSquared and so many others who have supported our growth. Reach Robotics began with the vision of creating advanced and accessible robotics to entertain, inspire and educate. I hope to carry that vision forward into the future. “Following some travel and much needed rest, the journey will continue in the Non consumer Robotics sector and the STEAM Education sector.” Source: https://ngg.ng/2019/09/08/silas-adekunle-f…n-business-in-uk/

Controversial on-air personality, Ifedayo Olarinde, popularly known as Daddy Freeze has called on the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, to start arresting people praying for their enemies to die. Daddy Freeze, on his Instagram page, said praying for enemies to die should be classified as suicide. According to him, SARS should arrest such people and begin charging them to court for attempted suicide. He wrote: “In Nigeria, praying for enemies to die should be classified as suicide, we are, by a wide margin, our own enemies. “SARS needs to start arresting people praying for their enemies to die by fire and begin charging them for attempted suicide.”

This is a welcome development. No government official who got into power through corruptible means and outright malpractice should be allowed to pilot our affairs. We expect the Tribunal to do more. kudos |
Operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), at the weekend, arrested 11 more suspects believed to be members of kidnap suspect Hamisu Bala Wadume’s gang. The operatives also recovered 18 AK47 rifles in the operation that covered Taraba and neighbouring states, The Nation learnt on Sunday. Saturday’s arrest brought to 19 the members of Wadume’s gang apprehended by the police since his re-arrest. It was gathered that the suspects were also making useful statements and providing leads into the three kidnap syndicates allegedly operated by the kingpin. The report of the Joint Investigative Panel on the killing of three undercover policemen by soldiers in Taraba State was however not ready, its Chairman Rear Admiral Ibikunle Olaiya, said yesterday. Remember Naija Gists and Gossips via ngg.ng reported to the world how Wadume was a petty fish tradeer in Taraba small community and then later became rich over night. And also we reported how he was eventually arrested at Ibi weeks ago but on their way to the Police Command Headquarters in Jalingo, soldiers attached to 93 Battalion Takum opened fire on a bus that was conveying them, this led to the death of three gallant Police Officers and a civilian. Since then, the committee set up known as the joint Investigative Panel has been investigating this matter and arrests are still on going.

At last, FG, ASUU sign agreement to end strike 25 minutes ago After five months and 10 days that the public universities have been shut due to the strike by the Academic Staff of Union of Universities, the Federal Government and the universities lecturers on Wednesday finally resolved to sign the 2013 Agreement. This is the review of the FGN-ASUU 2012 Memorandum of Understanding reached on the 2009 Agreement. Both parties, however, refused to give details of the agreement to journalists who witnessed the signing of the agreement. The meeting was almost aborted by the union but for the prompt intervention of some stakeholders.ASUU had on Tuesday vowed not to attend the meeting because there was no commitment and proper invitation from the government. The union had demanded the proof of payment of the N200bn universities infrastructure fund, non-victimisation clause, review of the Agreement in 2014 and that a representative of government, preferably the Attorney-General of the Federation sign the agreement as conditions to call-off the strike which began on July 1. Our correspondent, however, gathered that the union got three of its demands while it relinquished one to the government. |
