PoliticsSowore: SERAP, 48 CSOs Calls On UN, AU To Caution FG by soloenzo(op): 3:53pm On Sep 27, 2019
Not fewer than 50 Civil Society Organizations have come together to sign an agreement calling for the Intervention of the United Nations and Africa Union for the immediate and unconditional released of the Political Activist and Publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyole Sowore, who was arrested and detained by the Department of State Security about 56 days ago.

This violates the court order which granted the DSS the right to detain him for 45 days. After the 45 days elapsed, he has however not been released even after a Federal High Court in Abuja ask for his release and served Sowore's lead councel, Femi Falana (SAN) his release permit for about three days now.

Sowore was arrested since 3 August 2019 after calling for a national protest which he tagged #RevolutionNow. Since then, he has been in DSS custody.

Among these Civil Society Organizations who have made their voice heard about this issue are Media Rights Agenda(MRA), Global Voices, Socio-Economic Rights & Accountability Project (SERAP), and others.

In the words of Mr Ayode Longe, MRA Programme Director said: “It is antithetical to the tenets of democracy to arrest a man who was merely exercising his constitutional right of assembly, association and expression and the height of impunity to continue to detain him even after a court of competent jurisdiction has granted him bail. The DSS must immediately and unconditionally release Sowore.”

The Global Voices represented by Egbunike Nwachukwu said that, “Omoloye Sowore’s continued detention and the charges of treason affirm our position that this trial is merely a criminalisation of political dissent.

“We call on the Nigerian government to honour its own laws and the international treaties it is a signatory to. Sowore should be unconditionally released.”

Commenting on this, the Socio-Economic Rights & Accountability Project (SERAP) through Oluwadare Kolawole said that, “Sowore’s case and several similar cases instigated by state governors make a hideous mockery of Nigeria’s criminal justice systems, rule of law, freedom of expression and media freedom.

He further posited that, “Invoking charges of treasonable felony to unjustifiably or arbitrarily restrict the right to freedom of opinion and expression undermine the essence of the criminal justice system and the rule of law.

The CSOs however, commended and acknowledged the efforts made by SAN, Femi Falana for continuing fighting to secure the publisher and activist's release from DSS detention.

PoliticsRe: FG To Renegotiate Full Implementation Of N30,000 Minimum Wage by soloenzo(op): 12:38pm On Sep 27, 2019
soloenzo:
The Federal Government is set to reconstitute a new committee to begin fresh negotiations for the full implementation of the new national minimum wage of N30,000.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

“The President has put in place a new committee or council called ‘Presidential Committee On Salaries and Allowances,” he said.

Senator Ngige made the revelation when the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) paid him a courtesy visit at his office in the nation’s capital.

He, however, warned that the delay in agreement for the full implementation of the new minimum wage may put the Federal and State governments in a difficult position to pay because of the backlog that would arise.

The minister explained that it was important for workers earning above N30,000 and on grade level seven to 17 to be patient.

He gave assurance that the consequential adjustment of the minimum wage implementation was being sorted out.

He, therefore, promised to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari over the stalemated negotiation on the new wage.

The minister informed the labour leaders that the Federal Government was committed to the full implementation of the minimum wage.

Also present at the meeting were the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Mr Festus Keyamo, and the NLC President, Mr Ayuba Wabba, among others.

TravelMore Visas & Free Accommodation Will Be Granted To Seasonal Workers In This Ocea by soloenzo(op): 12:33pm On Sep 27, 2019
In the first year, 1550 more visas will be available for workers from the Pacific to come to New Zealand under the Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) scheme.

An increase in the second year is conditional on the industry proving it is making horticulture and viticulture sectors easier and more attractive for New Zealand workers.

Immigration Minister Iain Lees-Galloway said the industry would also need to up its game and make sure more accommodation was built for workers.

"The cap on the number of temporary visas that can be granted to employ foreign seasonal workers is set to rise by 3150 over two years to 16,000,'' Mr Lees-Galloway said.

In the first year it will increase by 1550 to 14,400 for 2019/20 and if approval has also been given for the cap to be raised then it will increase by a further 1,600 places to 16,000 in 2020/21.

Mr Lees-Galloway said restrictions would be placed on the further use of residential housing by seasonal workers to prevent New Zealanders being squeezed out of local housing by the increased cap.

"New Zealand is dealing with a housing crisis left to us by the previous government. So, this year restrictions will be placed on the further use of residential rental housing by RSE employers to accommodate RSE workers," Mr Lees-Galloway said.

"I continue to encourage the industry to do more to accommodate its workforce and make sure Kiwis aren't squeezed out of local housing by an increase in the RSE cap".

Areas that are deemed to have low housing pressure will be exempted from the restriction, he said.

Strawberry grower Francie Perry said they had needed a decision in July to give officials the time to allocate the extra numbers, and today's announcement was too little, too late.

"If we don't get some help from Immigration New Zealand then again we'll miss the boat for our own harvest and again we'll have fruit rotting in the fields,'' she said.

Ms Perry has told RNZ her farm might have to leave crops to rot in the ground if they can't get enough pickers.

Horticulture New Zealand said the government was moving in the right direction but more RSE workers were still needed to support horticulture's big growth.

"For strawberries and asparagus it's not good because they can't access workers for their harvest, which is now,'' Hort NZ chief executive Mike Chapman said.

"There's a lead time, you've got to be able to process visas, you've got to be able to identify who is available to work and get them out to New Zealand. So it doesn't help them at all."

Mr Chapman said a better announcement would have been at least another 500 visas being granted immediately.

PoliticsRe: Senate Talks Hot On How To Tackle Youth Unemployment, Poverty, Poor Education by soloenzo(m): 11:51am On Sep 27, 2019
Olusharp:
The Senate has resolved to tackle youth unemployment, poverty, and reform of the educational sector, among other challenges facing the country.

The lawmakers made the resolution on Thursday in the Red Chamber following the adoption of the Legislative Agenda for the Ninth Senate.

They vowed to channel their energy towards strengthening Basic and Technical Education by enhancing oversight on the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), to ensure the implementation of the provisions of the Act.

In his remarks, President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, pledged that the upper chamber of the National Assembly would work to reduce the number of out-of-school children across the country.

“Today, the education sector suffers a lot,” he was quoted as saying in a statement by his Special Assistant on Press, Ezrel Tabiowo.

The Senate President added, “The 11 million or 12 million children out of school – we owe them that responsibility to do something about them, and that is taking us back to the implementation of the Basic Education Act.

The Senate President added, “The 11 million or 12 million children out of school – we owe them that responsibility to do something about them, and that is taking us back to the implementation of the Basic Education Act.

“How do we ensure that we reduce and eliminate the number of out-of-school children on our street? Whatever name we have to give that programme, we have to do something and government has to take responsibilities.”

Senate President Lawan also noted that the government, at the federal and state levels, would have to create some funds to employ and train more teachers.

He gave assurance that the lawmakers, on their part, would work assiduously to implement its legislative agenda.

The Senate President said, “This legislative agenda is particularly ours. We represent the people, we know their feelings, and we imagine that the legislative perspectives we have here may be slightly different from the executive perspective.

“But at the same time, we are going to serve the same people, and that is where the need for us to come together and to reconcile our thinking on taking Nigeria to the next level will be.”

He also made it clear that Osinbajo should stop threatening the media as that is what he is known for. Ikenga posited that Osinbajo should not forget so soon how he went about during the APC presidential campaigns accusing previous opposition leadership of GEJ and others of corruption. Ikenga asked that Vice President to get ready for impeachment. He further said that the President Buhari led administration has put in place all his tools in all the ministries and parastatals the vice president was anchoring or overseeing, and that this means the vice president is no longer useful.

PoliticsRe: Fani-Kayode Asks Osinbajo To Resign As Vice President by soloenzo(m): 1:21pm On Sep 26, 2019
kidap:
Former Aviation Minister and chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party, Femi Fani-Kayode has called for the resignation of the Vice President of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbajo.

He made the call while reacting to Yemi Osinbajo’s declaration of his readiness to waive his constitutional immunity to “enable the most robust adjudication” of several baseless allegations, insinuation and falsehoods against his person and office by Timi Frank and one Katch Ononuju.

Timi Frank had alleged that Osinbajo’s “ongoing travails” was because he could not account for the N90billion received from the Federal Inland Revenue Service for the 2019 election.

He claimed to have reliable information from his sources in the presidency and dared to challenge the vice president in court.

Reacting to Osinbajo’s declaration on Thursday, Fani-Kayode said the vice president should not only waive his immunity but should also resign from his position to prove his innocence and challenge Timi Frank.

He said: “If you are really a man don’t just waive your immunity to sue Timi Frank but RESIGN from your position and take him on man to man.

“He will eat you for breakfast. I know that young man: he is a real Ijaw! Deeply courageous and tough as nails. You cannot intimidate him or break him.”

PoliticsOsinbajo Must Defend Allegations Against Jonathan, Saraki - Timi Frank by soloenzo(op): 12:15pm On Sep 26, 2019
A political activist and former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Timi Frank, has said that now that the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has sued him, it is time for the RCCG's pastor to prove several allegations he made against former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Senate President Bukola Saraki, among others.

Frank told the Vice President that he won't be intimidated by going to court, saying the VP has record of intimidating the media, Civil Societies and social crusaders.

Reacting through a statement on Thursday to the declaration by Osinbajo that he would waive his immunity to pursue a libel case against him, Frank asked "why didn’t he (Osinbajo) do the same when the issue of alleged misappropriation of 5.8bn contract at NEMA came up?

"Why didn’t he sue the wife of the President when she alleged that the Social Investment Programme of this administration has failed. As one who oversees that, I would have expected him to sue the wife of the president or waive his immunity for the relevant graft agencies to investigate him.

"More recently, it was alledged by the spokesperson of the foremost anti corruption agency in Nigeria that the same N-SIP is riddled with corruption. I wonder why he’s not suing EFCC or the spokesperson."

While recalling some of the allegations Osinbajo made against some other public officials before, Frank said: "Osinbajo should be informed that his statements against the likes of former President Goodluck Jonathan and Sen. Bukola Saraki will also be used as evidence against him once he enters the dock.

"It is worthy to note that it is in the character of Prof. Yemi Osinbajo to intimidate Nigerians, media houses and civil societies by court processes. He rushed to court and filled a motion ex-parte in 2015 against AIT and NTA not to air a documentary of him. Another case in hand was when Prof. Osinbajo through his solicitors asked google to remove/ suspend a video published by Roots TV from YouTube as it was termed ‘defamatory publication’. Why does he not want Nigerians to scrutinize his person? Is he hiding anything? Has he forgotten he is holding a public office?

"If I were Pastor Osinbajo, what would bother me at this point would be the numerous allegations from within as well as manifest plot against him because of his alleged financial dealings in some of the agencies under him."

On the statement that he was ready to waive his immunity, the political activist said: "As heartwarming as Prof. Osinbajo offer to waive his constitutional immunity is, it is really not his to waive. The immunity from prosecution applies to him as long as he remains the Vice President.

If he is certain that the allegations levied against him from all quarters in recent times are false, then he can choose to resign from office to challenge me and others with libel suit. This is against the background that as a sitting Vice President, he is likely to interfere in the judicial process as well as use public funds.

"I am a social crusader and all I have done all my life is to fight for the common man and no amount of intimidation and blackmail will stop me. Prof. Osinbajo is out solely to intimidate the media and civil society groups but I can assure him that I can not easily be intimidated. He knows the people fighting him and giving him out. What should bother him is his associate that have betrayed him."

Mr Vice President, give us a break, resign and stop intimidating us!

Signed:
Comrade Timi Frank
Political Activist

SportsRe: FIFA Reduces Players’ Loan Per Club To Eight by soloenzo(m): 9:44am On Sep 26, 2019
Olusharp:
FIFA has agreed steps that will limit the number of players clubs can send out on loan from next season and will also limit the amount of money paid to agents in commissions, world football’s governing body announced on Wednesday.
In a statement, FIFA said it had taken “a series of key steps to protect the integrity of the system and prevent abuses” following a meeting of its Stakeholders Committee.
From next season, the number of international loans out and in permitted per club will be limited to eight, with that figure dropping progressively to six by the 2022/23 season. The number of players that can be loaned between the same two clubs will be capped at three.
However, the cap will only be applied to players aged over 21, or “non club-trained” players aged 21 and under.
The measures are aimed at curtailing “abusive and excessive practices”, with FIFA citing the hoarding of players by clubs and the distortion of competition when teams bring in several players on loan from a bigger club with whom they have a close relationship.
“Players’ development is suffering as they are moved from one club to another with no clear career plan. The current loan system has facilitated player hoarding with clubs putting numerous players on their books and then loaning them out to other clubs,” FIFA said in a confidential document seen by AFP.
The measures appear to be aimed at clubs such as Chelsea, who have habitually had vast numbers of players out on loan in recent seasons.
Monaco have as many as 18 players currently loaned out, including seven at Belgian side Cercle Brugge.
The recommendations will be endorsed at the upcoming FIFA Council meeting in Shanghai, scheduled for October 24.
However, they will not immediately apply to domestic loans, with the document stating that member associations will have three years in order to implement rules on a loan system “in line with FIFA principles”.
Meanwhile, in an effort to curb the amount of money going out of the game and into the pockets of agents, FIFA stakeholders also agreed to limit commissions as “conflicts of interest plague football’s transfer system.”
As a result, a selling club will not have to pay more than 10 percent of a transfer fee received to an agent acting on their behalf.

Agents representing a player will be entitled to a maximum of three percent of that player’s total remuneration and another three percent for representing the buying club.
In 2016, Mino Raiola was paid 27 million euros for his role in Paul Pogba’s transfer from Juventus to Manchester United for a then world-record fee of over 100 million euros.
The new measures are designed to limit “financial incentive of agents to engineer a possible transfer and to create “more transparent and objective forms of remuneration,” the document stated.

“Certain measures will certainly not please some agents, but there was a consensus on these measures and there have been discussions going back more than a year,” a FIFA official told journalists at the organisation’s Zurich headquarters.

“This is an important step towards making transfers more moral.”
The measures will also be endorsed at the FIFA Council in Shanghai.

This is a very good step in the right direction... Though my club Chelsea FC is going through hell now with transfer ban but this helped to improve our loaned players. We are enjoying them now oo, so take note
PoliticsOsinbajo To Sue Google, See Why by soloenzo(op): 9:26am On Sep 26, 2019
Nigeria’s Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, has threatened to sue Google over ‘false allegations’ made against him on a YouTube page.

A video report published on September 20 on the video-sharing site by Roots TV Nigeria alleged that Mr Osinbajo “used” federal agencies under his supervision as vice president “to stack funds” for 2023 general elections.

The allegation is based mainly on a claim made by Katch Ononuju, described in the report as a political analyst.

Mr Ononuju in the Roots TV report said there is an “anticipation” that Mr Osinbajo will run for president in 2023.

The vice president’s lawyers said in the letter to Google that the report was untrue and defamatory.

“The publication is undoubtedly a barefaced attempt to unfairly discredit and expose our client to contempt and ridicule in the eyes of right-thinking members of the society,” the lawyers said.

The vice president demanded that Google remove or suspend the publication immediately or be ready for legal action.

The letter was delivered to the Google office in Lagos.

There have been critical reports, most of them unsubstantiated, against Mr Osinbajo of late in the media.

Some of the reports claimed there is a power tussle between the vice president and a cabal which wants to edge him out of the presidency because of succession politics.

Also on Wednesday, Vanguard newspaper apologised to Mr Osinbajo over a news report alleging that he mismanaged N90 billion said to have been released by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2019 general elections.

The Vanguard story was based on an interview with Timi Frank, a former deputy national publicity secretary of the APC, who had long fallen out with the leadership of the party.

Mr Frank did not substantiate the allegation which has since been debunked by the FIRS.

“It is not plausible nor does it make any sense that FIRS will commit its resources to a phantom campaign of N90 billion as suggested by Mr. Timi Frank and FIRS does not fund political associations,” the agency’s spokesperson, Wahab Gbadamosi, said on Monday.

Vanguard said in a statement posted on its website on Wednesday, “We have since discovered that the story lacks factual substance and we hereby retract it in its entirety.”

The paper apologised to the vice president, the APC, and the FIRS for “any inconvenience or embarrassment the publication has occasioned them”.

“We hold Professor Osinbajo, SAN in the highest esteem,” it said in the statement.

The report was yet to be pulled down from the Vanguard website as at Wednesday night.

The vice president was yet to react to the apology as at the time of filing this report.

He has said he is ready to wave his constitutionally guaranteed immunity to ensure persons who spread falsehood about him were brought to book. He particularly mentioned Mr Frank and Mr Ononuju is the tweets threatening the lawsuit.

Meanwhile, in an effort to curb the amount of money going out of the game and into the pockets of agents, FIFA stakeholders also agreed to limit commissions as “conflicts of interest plague football’s transfer system."

The new measures are designed to limit “financial incentive of agents to engineer a possible transfer and to create “more transparent and objective forms of remuneration," the document stated.

PoliticsRivers: Gov. Wike Suspends Principal, Vows To Sack Others Collecting Fees, Levie by soloenzo(op): 8:31am On Sep 26, 2019
In line with his abolition of all forms of fees and levies in public schools, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has released funds for the running of the schools for the 2019/2020 academic session and vowed to sack any school heads caught collecting fees and levies.

This is as the Rivers State Government has suspended the Principal of Oginigba Community Secondary School, Oginigba for the illegal collection of levies.

The funds released by the Rivers State Governor would be used by the schools to buy registers, chalks, dusters, markers, notebooks, pens and other consumables.

Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Ministry of Education, Mr Adonye Dagogo Hart informed that Governor Wike has also released funds for the supervision of schools for the entire 2019/2020 academic session.

The Rivers State Governor also released six Hilux Vans for school supervision.

Hart said that the suspension of the Principal was to serve as a deterrent to other school Administrators.

It will be recalled that on 24th June, 2019, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike announced the total abolition of all forms of fees and levies in public primary and secondary schools across the state.

Wike directed State-owned Primary and Secondary Schools to stop collecting fees and levies from students and pupils with immediate effect.

Wike stated that henceforth the State Government will be sending direct allocations to all primary and secondary schools management for their operations.

“The monies you collect from these children are just used for your personal purposes. If I hear that any school head collects any fees or levies, be they examination , NECO or WAEC fees, that school head would be sanctioned.

“We shall not only dismiss the school head who collects fees or levies, we will prosecute the person involved. Government will work out grants that will be sent to the schools for their regular management and operations “.

Governor Wike directed the State Ministry of Education, the Rivers State Senior Secondary Schools Board and the State Universal Basic Education Board to monitor all public schools across the state to ensure compliance.

quote author=Olusharp post=82550500]
President Muhammadu Buhari has described failed Process and Industrial Development Limited (P&ID) deal as a cheat to rub Nigeria of money running into billions of dollars.

He stated this on Tuesday while addressing world leaders at the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the United States.

The President said, “The present Nigerian government is facing the challenges of corruption head-on.

“We are giving notice to international criminal groups by the vigorous prosecution of the P&ID scam attempting to cheat Nigeria of billions of dollars".

President Buhari decried the activities of organised criminal networks which he said were acting with impunity across international borders.

Noting that such crimes present new challenges where only collective action can deliver genuine results, he highlighted the battle against violent extremism, trafficking in people and drugs, corruption among others.

The President called on tech companies to live up to their responsibilities and curb the spread of information capable of inciting nations against each other.

He recalled the massacre in New Zealand where a lone gunman took the lives of 50 worshippers and similar crimes that were fuelled by social media networks.

“Major tech companies must be alive to their responsibilities. They cannot be allowed to continue to facilitate the spread of religious, racist, xenophobic and false messages capable of inciting whole communities against each other, leading to loss of many lives,” President Buhari told the leaders at the summit.

Regrettable Signals

The Nigerian leader noted that the assembly has the theme, ‘Galvanising multilateral efforts for poverty eradication, quality education, climate action and inclusion.'

According to him, the issues are the prime areas calling for collective action which will benefit national and global interests.

President Buhari informed the gathering that the world was at a critical juncture as the year marks the first anniversary of the International Day of Multi-lateralism and Diplomacy for Peace.

Multi-lateralism symbolised by the UN system, he noted, has brought immense benefits to the people of the world.

He added that it has saved lives, prevented wars, restored peace and stability, as well as generated economic and social progress in many countries.

The President, however, called the attention of the summit to the alarming rate of poverty in some countries, especially in the African continent.

He said, “We must admit that as the world grows richer, there are regrettable signals in the World Economic and Political Order. Millions in Africa and around the world remain in abject poverty.

“Furthermore, we are witnessing a backlash against multi-lateralism in the shape of rising tide of racism, xenophobia, resurgent nationalism, populism and tendencies towards protectionism and unilateralism. The pristine principles of the United Nations appear threatened".

PoliticsRe: Timi Frank To Firs: I Stand By My Statement, Says I Shall Meet You In Court by soloenzo(m): 11:24am On Sep 24, 2019
Olusharp:
A political activist and former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, has called on the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to bury their faces in their hands in shame over their gross act of corruption recently exposed by him.

Frank in a statement in Abuja in response to a riposte to his press release by the tax agency, said he cannot be intimidated by the agency’s threat to sue him.

He described the agency’s rantings as a puerile attempt to sweep the main issues in his public statement under the carpet.
He said that the FIRS thinks they can continue to deceive Nigerians by claiming unfounded budgetary fidelity.
Frank said: “I read the statement by the Federal Inland Revenue Service and I am rather disappointed at their intellectual laziness.
“Who is the FIRS trying to fool by claiming that their annual subvention is not up to a N100 billion? That is an unintelligent attempt to fool the public.
“The FIRS, like the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Central Bank of Nigeria and the Securities and Exchange Commission are revenue generating agencies of the Federal Government that do not depend on budgetary subventions.
“These agencies are able to appropriate huge funds from the monies they generate for their use.”
He urged the agency to come clean and tell Nigerians the reason for the discrepancies which exist in their records of tax collection.
“For example, on January 7, 2019, the Federal Inland Revenue Service announced that it had broken Nigeria’s all-time revenue generation record, by generating N5.3trillion in 2018.
“However, on 18th August, 2019, the FIRS’ boss was queried for poor performance and under remittances to the Federation Account by the Chief of Staff to General Muhammadu Buhari, Mr. Abba Kyari.
“Kyari’s letter to the FIRS’s Boss, Tunde Fowler, was to the intent that the reported ‘record breaking’ revenue the agency claimed to have generated was in reality not up to the revenues generated in the previous Peoples Democratic Party-led administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.
“The query, which was widely published in all newspapers and online media channels, was as a result of the N90billion that the FIRS illegally funneled to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for the 2019 elections which led to the shortfall.
“The FIRS should bury their head in the mud and apologise to Nigerians for aiding and abetting corruption,” he said.
The Bayelsa-born activist called on the anti-corruption agencies to arrest and prosecute the leadership of the Service for aiding and abetting corruption.
He said: “The big question is: what is responsible for the discrepancy? These are questions that the FIRS should be explaining to Nigerians rather than trying to be clever by half in claiming that they do not get up to N100 billion per annum, when in fact they expend 50 times that amount.
“I therefore call for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the leadership of the FIRS for fraud and money laundering.”
Frank added: “I stand by my statement and am not going to tender any apology to FiRS. They are the ones to apologize to Nigerians for illegally spending taxpayers’ money on elections.
“I cannot be intimidated by threats. I am prepared to meet them in court. Why are they crying more than the bereaved if they have nothing to hide?
“Why did they decide to respond on behalf of the Vice President, who is the main issue here? Is the FIRS now Osinbajo’s mouthpiece?”

Foreign AffairsIndonesia President Urges Delay In Law Banning Sex Outside Marriage(see Reasons) by soloenzo(op): 11:33am On Sep 20, 2019
Indonesian President Joko Widodo on Friday called for a delay in passing a new law that would outlaw gay and pre-marital sex after the controversial plan sparked a public outcry.

The proposed criminal code overhaul should get a closer look given the backlash, Widodo said, as he asked that parliament scrap a planned vote on the revisions before its session ends next week.

The mooted changes could affect millions in the world’s biggest Muslim majority country, including gay and heterosexual couples who might face jail for having sex outside wedlock or having an affair.

On Friday, the Australian embassy in Jakarta issued a fresh travel advisory for Indonesia, warning that the legislation could put unmarried foreign tourists in the crosshairs.

“After hearing from various groups with objections to aspects of the law, I’ve decided that some of it need further deliberation,” the recently re-elected Widodo said in a televised press briefing.

“The justice minister has been told to convey my views to parliament and that ratification of the criminal code should be postponed and not passed” in the current session, he added.

Updating Indonesia’s criminal code — which stretches back to the Dutch colonial era — has been debated for decades and appeared set to pass in 2018 before it fizzled.

A renewed push this year, backed by conservative Islamic groups, was met with a tidal wave of criticism from rights groups and ordinary citizens furious over what many saw as a draconian law that invaded the bedrooms of a nation with some 260 million people — the fourth most populous on Earth.

An online petition calling for the bill to be scrapped garnered half a million signatures while hundreds of thousands took to social media to vent their frustration.

“It’s crazy if this bill is passed, crazy! What is this country turning into?” movie director Joko Anwar tweeted to his 1.7 million followers.

The sweeping proposals call for a wider interpretation of Indonesia’s blasphemy law, which has seen members of religious minority groups, including Christians and Buddhists, prosecuted in the past.

They also sought to criminalise “insulting” the president or vice president, which critics said would be a blow to free speech.

People who have pre-marital or extramarital sex could face between six months and one year in jail, as well as fines, under the mooted changes.

There were also penalties for anyone “showing or offering” contraception to minors under 18.

The revisions appeared to bar parents from teaching their children about sex or contraception in favour of authorised government workers.

“Sex education is important. Period,” one woman wrote on Twitter.

“I’d rather go to jail than see my daughter raped by her boyfriend just because she doesn’t know that sex has to be consensual.”

TravelVisa To Switzerland Costs Only N50,000, Says Migration Adviser by soloenzo(op): 5:50pm On Sep 13, 2019
The Migration Adviser to the Embassy of Switzerland in Nigeria, Ms Jolands Pfister Herren, has said that it only cost N50,000 to secure a visa to travel to Switzerland from Nigeria.

Ms. Herren who cautioned Nigerians against falling prey to human traffickers or embarking on irregular migration said it was better to visit embassies and get answers.

She spoke in Benin City at a two-day stakeholders consultation to combat and prevent human trafficking in Edo State tagged “Community Action to Combat Human Trafficking.”

Herren said the Swizz-funded project being implemented by the Women Aid Collective (WACOL) was aimed to facilitate greater networking amongst stakeholders and to institutionalise early warning systems to prevent human trafficking and irregular migration.

She said the project aimed to engage traditional institutions and religious leaders in the state to sensitize and mobilise communities.

According to her, “The fight against trafficking in persons constitutes a strategic area of intervention of the Swiss foreign policy on migration.

“Switzerland is committed to staying engaged in the fight against human trafficking, sees it as a long term undertaking and is keen on exploring innovative and concrete ways of addressing this issue.”

Executive Director, WACOL, Prof. Joy Ngozi Ezeilo said the group is committed to ensuring safe migration options and safety measures to combat human trafficking and unsafe migration.

Prof. Ezeilo said the group opted to explore other ways to tackle the menace of human trafficking.

Benin Zonal Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) stressed the need to institutionalize early warning mechanism to prevent human trafficking at the community and grassroot level in Edo State.

Nwanwenne said human trafficking is degrading and dehumanising as well as violates the human rights of the victims.

TravelSnakes On A Plane: 88 Reptiles Found In Man’s Suitcase At Airport by soloenzo(op): 12:49pm On Sep 12, 2019
An Austrian man who smuggled 88 living reptiles including 43 poisonous snakes from the Philippines was stopped by customs officers at Vienna airport, Austria’s Finance Ministry said Thursday.

When the Austrian national arrived via Doha on Sunday, the officers screened his suitcase and saw that it was full of animals.

After the man admitted that it contained poisonous snakes, the officers decided to transfer the closed luggage to Vienna’s Schoenbrunn Zoo, where experts opened it.

They found Samar cobras, Mangrove snakes and vipers, as well as dozens of monitor lizards and geckos. Many of the smaller animals were transported in nylon stockings.

The traveler said that he had planned to sell the reptiles at a fair in Germany.

He faces legal proceedings for alleged breach of Austria’s law regulation trade in protected species.

The zoo in Vienna, as well as an Austrian reptile zoo, agreed to take in the animals.

The Air Peace flight MEN2759 conveying 188 Nigerians from South Africa has arrived at the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos at 9:35 pm local time.

The aircraft which departed the OR Tambo International Airport in South Africa, after an eight-hour delay, had on board, 188 Nigerians.

The President gave this order after he received the report of the special envoy sent to South Africa to convey a Special Message to President Cyril Ramaphosa over the recent xenophobic attacks in the country.

While some people were turned back over inadequate documentation for travelling with children, about seven were detained for allegedly entering the country illegally.

Foreign AffairsNorth Korea Fires New Missiles, Proposes Talks With Trump by soloenzo(op): 9:23am On Sep 10, 2019
North Korea on Tuesday fired projectiles into the sea, South Korea’s military said, hours after Pyongyang said it was willing to hold working-level talks this month with the United States.

Negotiations between Pyongyang and Washington have been gridlocked since a second summit between the North’s leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump in February ended without a deal.

North Korea twice launched “unidentified projectiles” Tuesday morning in an easterly direction. The objects flew approximately 330 kilometres (205 miles) from the Kaechon area in South Pyongan province, according to the South Korean military.

“We urge the North to stop such acts that escalate tensions in the region,” South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.

No further details were immediately available but it was the latest in a series of provocations. Previous launches have been identified as short-range missiles.

“We are aware of reports of projectiles launched from North Korea,” a senior US official said. “We are continuing to monitor the situation and consulting closely with our allies in the region.”

Trump and Kim had agreed to restart working-level dialogue during an impromptu meeting at the Demilitarised Zone dividing the nuclear-armed North and South Korea in June, but those talks have yet to begin.

“We have willingness to sit with the US side for comprehensive discussions of the issues we have so far taken up at the time and place to be agreed late in September,” Choe Son Hui, the North’s vice foreign minister, said in a statement carried on Monday by the official Korean Central News Agency.

Choe’s comment followed her warning in late August that North Korea’s “expectations of dialogue with the US are gradually disappearing”, after Pyongyang conducted a series of weapons tests to protest joint US-South Korean military exercises.

Asked about the proposal for lower-level talks in September, Trump told reporters: “I have a very good relationship with Chairman Kim. I always say having meetings is a good thing. We’ll see what happens.”

The period suggested by North Korea would correspond with the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

On Monday, Choe recalled Kim’s comments that the North would wait until the end of the year for Washington to “quit its current calculation method” and urged the US to come up with an “acceptable” offer or risk jeopardising the entire diplomatic process.

When asked by AFP about the latest North Korean offer, a State Department official replied: “We don’t have any meetings to announce at this time.”

Kim and Trump adopted a vaguely-worded statement on the “complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula” at their first summit in Singapore in June last year, but little progress has since been made on dismantling Pyongyang’s nuclear programme.

A report published by a United Nations panel of experts last week said North Korea’s development of nuclear warheads has not stopped, despite the moratorium it declared on nuclear blasts and long-range missile launches.

US officials have called North Korea’s recent short-range missile launches provocations, although Trump himself has avoided criticising them.

North Korea is under heavy US and UN sanctions over its weapons programmes, and has criticised Washington’s position that sanctions against the isolated regime will not be lifted until the country gives up its nuclear weapons.

Foreign AffairsUS House Steps Up Trump Impeachment Probe by soloenzo(op): 8:55pm On Sep 09, 2019
Democrats moved Monday to intensify their impeachment investigation of President Donald Trump as whiffs of new scandal surrounding the White House emerged related to Trump’s business and his lawyer’s involvement in Ukraine.

While the Democrat leadership remains reluctant to go all-in on impeachment, given that the Republican-controlled Senate would vote down any effort to oust Trump, the stepped-up investigation could add further pressure on the embattled president 14 months before the next elections.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler moved to formalize an investigation that had up to now avoided officially declaring the aim to impeach Trump and put him on trial in the Senate.

He laid out new procedures that he said would govern “the committee’s investigation to determine whether to recommend articles of impeachment with respect to President Donald J. Trump.”

He also defined the investigation along four specific lines: allegations that Trump illegally interfered with the Russia election meddling investigation, that he took part in hush payments to alleged former mistresses, that he has used his office to enrich himself, and that he offered pardons to government and campaign officials to protect him.

“No one is above the law,” Nadler said in a statement.

The unprecedented corruption, coverup, and crimes by the president are under investigation by the committee as we determine whether to recommend articles of impeachment or other Article 1 remedies,” he said, referring to the US Constitution’s section on legislative powers.

In recent weeks more than half of the 235 Democrats in the House of Representatives have endorsed impeachment, even as senior party officials, especially House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, continue to resist it.

Pelosi has made clear she believes the party needs to focus its energies on defeating Trump and the Republicans in the November 2020 election.

Nadler’s new rules, which are expected to be passed by the committee on Thursday, will govern how witnesses will be called and questioned and how Trump’s lawyers will be involved.

They are also expected to provide the committee with a broader ability to subpoena witnesses and documents, in the face of resistance by the White House.

We will not allow Trump’s continued obstruction to stop us from delivering the truth to the American people,” Nadler said.

Meanwhile the Democratic heads of three other House committees announced an investigation into alleged efforts by Trump and his lawyer Rudy Giuliani to pressure the Ukrainian government for their own political ends, including by withholding US security assistance.

They allege that Trump and Giuliani have pressured Kiev to prosecute Ukrainians who provided evidence against Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort in the Russia meddling investigation.

They also alleged that Kiev was pressured to provide damaging information on the son of former Democratic vice president Joe Biden, who could face Trump in next year’s presidential election.

Hunter Biden worked for a Ukrainian gas company beginning in 2014, while his father was vice president.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested the duo of Garba Iliyasu and Umar Iliyasu who are alleged to be running a Ponzi Scheme in Kano under the name, MGB Global Market.

Their arrest was sequel to intelligence that the organisation had lured many citizens to ‘invest’ in the bogus scheme using irresistible promise of return on investment of up to 50 percent in two weeks as bait.

Upon receipt of the intelligence, the Commission stormed the office of MGB Global located at Sabo Bakin Zuwo Road, Opposite ConOil, Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State and arrested Garba Iliyasu and Umar Iliyasu alongside 16 other employees of the outfit. The employees were subsequently released.

During the operation, laptops, desktops, POS machines, Tokens and other documents were recovered.

Investigation revealed that one Mohammed Garba Iliyasu who is now on the run is the Managing Director of the Company. Two of his brothers, Abubakar Garba Iliyasu and Ibrahim Garba Iliyasu who are also part of the scheme, are equally on the run.

On September 5, 2019, operatives of the Commission executed a search on the family house of the suspects in Hotoro Area of Kano State and made startling discovery of prohibited firearms, live ammunition and several other incriminating documents.

One of the suspects is allegedly building a 6-bedroom duplex at the same Hotoro with funds which are believed to be proceeds of the Ponzi Scheme.

The Commission once again, warn the general public to desist from patronizing get rich schemes like MGB Global.
