FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup: Falconets depart for Poland, promise to make Nigeria proud

Nigeria’s U20 Women’s National Team, the Falconets, have concluded their final camping and preparations ahead of the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, with the team scheduled to depart Nigeria for Poland on the night of Monday, 24th August 2026.

The two-time World Cup silver medallists secured their place at the global tournament following a successful qualifying campaign against Rwanda, Senegal and Malawi. They defeated Rwanda 5–0 on aggregate, overcame Senegal 3–1 on aggregate, and sealed their World Cup ticket against Malawi with a 3–2 aggregate victory.

Following their qualification, the team embarked on an intensive final phase of preparation in Abuja, with emphasis on physical fitness, tactical discipline, teamwork and mental readiness.

Head Coach Moses Aduku expressed confidence in the squad, saying the players have been adequately prepared both physically and mentally and are ready to compete at the highest level. He added that the Falconets are heading to Poland with a strong winning mentality and the ambition of challenging for the trophy.

Captain Joy Igbokwe also assured Nigerians of the team’s determination to make the country proud. She appealed to Nigerians to continue believing in, praying for and supporting the team, saying the Falconets are determined to bring smiles to the faces of Nigerians.

The Falconets will compete in Group F alongside Spain, China PR and New Caledonia at the tournament.

Nigeria, runners-up of the 2010 and 2014 editions of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, will be seeking to go a step further in Poland and win the country’s first title in the competition.

The team will stay at the Hotel Trzebnica in the city of Trzebnica from their arrival on Tuesday, 25thAugust until Thursday, 3rd September, when they will move into the FIFA hotel. While at the Hotel Trzebnica, the Falconets will perfect their tactical and technical readiness for the championship, and also acclimatise ahead of their Group F games against Spain (7th September), China (10thSeptember) and New Caledonia (13th September).

A total of 21 players will fly Nigeria’s flag at the competition, with Nigeria the only African country to have appeared at every edition of the competition since it was launched as an U19 tournament in Canada 24 years ago.

According to Colin Udoh, he asked some super falcons players why they didn't speak up if they weren't comfortable with some of Madugu's strategy/game plan/coaching decisions (some apparently insinuated this hence the question). In response to his question, the girls claimed that they did but were punished for it by being benched. He reportedly confirmed this from at least 2 different players in different conversations.

This is disappointing

Now I can see why Okoronkwo, Babajide and Monday were always on bench. Why Chioma Okafor never got to play in the last WAFCON (2 years ago). At a point when Okoronkwo was asked by the Press why should wasn't playing, she declined and said, 'No comment'. These players were bottling up so many things.

Another competition is coming up from September 5-27th which is the U20 FIFA Women's World cup 2027 in Poland. Already the Ghanaian team are in Poland currently preparing and playing friendly matches to fine tune their team for the competition. It has all been silence from the Falconets team.

For the FIFA Women's World cup 2027 playoffs game, Nigeria must beat South Africa tomorrow.

Several possible opponents are already known. Asia’s two play-off representatives are Uzbekistan and the Chinese Taipei, while Papua New Guinea are Oceania’s representatives after finishing second behind New Zealand. South America’s two play-off teams are Venezuela and Ecuador, with Venezuela finishing third and Ecuador fourth in the 2025-26 CONMEBOL Women’s Nations League. Ecuador, the lower-ranked side, enter the first stage, while Venezuela receive a place in the second stage.

Nigeria could therefore face the other African qualifier, Uzbekistan, the Chinese Taipei, Papua New Guinea or Ecuador in the first stage. The exact pairing will depend on FIFA’s draw and ranking system, so these are possible opponents rather than confirmed fixtures.

That means Nigeria would need to win against South Africa, negotiate the first intercontinental stage and then win another decisive match in February 2027 to reach Brazil.

Nigeria would become one of CAF's two representatives in the FIFA Play-Off Tournament. CAF has two places in that tournament.

The tournament has 10 teams competing for only 3 World Cup places:

🇦🇫/🇦🇺 AFC: 2 teams
🌍 CAF: 2 teams — potentially Nigeria
🌎 CONCACAF: 2 teams
🇧🇷 South America (CONMEBOL): 2 teams
🌊 OFC: 1 team
🇪🇺 UEFA: 1 team

But it is not simply 10 teams in one knockout bracket.

How it works

Phase 1 — November/December 2026

Six teams play at a centralised venue:

2 AFC + 2 CAF + 1 CONMEBOL + 1 OFC

They are ranked according to the FIFA Women's World Ranking before the draw. The top two teams from this phase advance to Phase 2.

So, if Nigeria is one of CAF's representatives, Nigeria would have to perform well enough in this first phase to reach the second phase.

Phase 2 — February 2027

The two teams that survive Phase 1 join:

2 CONCACAF teams
1 CONMEBOL team
1 UEFA team

That gives 6 teams.

They are drawn into 3 separate paths, with one direct knockout match in each path.
