Lesgupnigeria:
Thanks soloxam for creating this thread .
I have learn a lot from the bitter experiences of other farmers on this thread

I have a lot of bitter experiences but i will share one today.
I remember some years ago when i leased some acres of land around ogun state.
The man told me it was 16 acres and i didnot bother to measure
i thought that since the man is a farmer he should be able to know and tell me accurately so i didnot bother to measure.

I gave him the money for the lease for the whole 16 acres and he collected it.
All the labours who work on the farm also charge me based on the 16 acres.
All the chemicals, fertilisers adequate for 16 acres are bought
The tractor man who plough the land also charge for 16 acres.

I began to suspect that all is not well when i was told that some chemicals and fertilisers remained about 7 cartons.

One of the farmer in the area told me to measure the land when i harvest my corn and i discover that the harvest is far below the target yield.

The next day, i came to the farm with the workers and tape rule, measuring acre by acre......no be small stress.

I later discover i was farming just 7acres.

Since then,i dont start farm without measuring the land using a surveyor.
what a great lost, you only trusted the man, too bad of him. That is why I always advice people to trust but verify...... Welcome on board mr Yusuf, more pls let keep those experience rolling......

\ all the pictures posted here are foreign breeds, the first picture is a crossbreed between a fresian cattle and a white fulani , the second picture is a brahman cattle, an indian breed it can grow to a weight of 1400 kg, the third picture is friesian bull,it can grow to a weight of 1200 kg, it is a diary breed, the fourth picture is a jersey breed, a dairy cow too, the are cattle belonging to sebore farm in adamawa state. each of the cattle above cost more than 400,000 naira .the advantage of foriegn breed over local breed is, they can produce large quantities of meat and milk , for example, a freisan cow averages about 25 liters of milk a day, and has the gentic potentail to produce 45 liters of milk, i have personally seen a cow producing 45 liters of milk a day. while our local funali cow averages 1 liter of milk a day, a brahman cattle averages a daily weight gain of 1.5 kg while a fulani cattle is 1.0 kg maximum per day, the disadvantages of foriegn breeds are,1, they are very expensive to buy and maintain, and are disease prone.they also find it find it difficult to survive in our hot weather.
Good work op, I see reAson why the exotic breed should be cross breed with our local breeds, because of the inability to withstand out hot weather.

While getting information from the internet, u have to mind the site you get them from. Read about the same topic from various sites and also consider the climate the writer is writing about. All these will help u to make necessary adjustment to suit ur particular situation. I must confess that in my practice as a poultry farmer, the internet have served me greatly and I'll advice every farmer to be a bookworm/internet worm. Combine that with information from offline sources and u'll make a great and unique farm. Also note that the level of ur understanding can influence how u interpret wot u read. That's why u shud write down the link of every source of information u get. Reading things u don't understand well for a second time or more can be very helpful.
Thanks for that tips sir.

Farmers learn on the job and making mistakes is not the issue rather it's how readily the problem is identified and tackled that matters. With practice, a farmer will realize that information derived from the internent is like a double edged sword because both fact and fiction are presented persuasively. Likewise seminars and e-manuals tend to be inadequate. I breed grasscutters and the greatest mistake i made was improper housing. The animal house didnt sufficiently protect the animals from cold of which grasscutters are extremely sensitive to. So a lot have died of pneumonia. A true farmer must learn to observe whateva plant or animal culture being grown. For it's through observation that the bulk of know-how is acquired.
You are very right sir, That is why we keep stressing it on this thread that constant practice is what makes you a good farmer, yet people need to be inform, to avoid been deformed, could u believe that u may be making a great mistake on ur farm, and u don't know it a mistake, until no means of correcting it? So these tips from different farmers base on their experience will guide one step.......Thanks bros for ur contribution.

We made use of NPK, liquid fertilizer and we added aspirin. Yes aspirin: you might be wondering. That was part of the instructions I followed.
Liquid soap also feature in the process. Like I said I thought i was learning from a pro.
But now I came to understand you need only to use organic fertilizer at a week in the nursery.
There is a way you do your nursery that increase your germination rate. All this i learnt from practical farmers.
Organic fertilizer you can source within your vicinity, poultry waste. Cow dungs etc.
You can only learn by practising
Thanks for ur contribution.

Lol at waiting for me. Thanks for the vote of confidence. You are not yet a farmer if you have not made bundle of mistakes. The utmost importance is learning from your mistakes. I have committed a lot of errors in the farm one that vividly comes to mind is when a supposed farmer give me the assurance of how i will make N10,000,000 from an hectare of tomatoes. Unbelievable you think.
Hmnnnn. With my careful calculation i cut it down and within me i was targetting atleast N5,000,000.
Lo and behold I plunged in all my resources, all my efforts to meet my desire target. I was always on the phone with her to give me instruction.
The truth dawn on me when i could only realise 10 basket instead of expected 1000 baskets.
The tomatoes hardly survive from the nursery. All my hope were dashed.
But farming is for the passionate. You cant afford to give up.
I traced my step back. Bought the another set of seed, give it to the practising farmers and said try this.
Unbelievably, their tomatoes was bigger and yield more than my farm produce despite that they did not make use of any fertilizer.
What i have learnt
1. Farming is not a get rich quickly profession. You ve got to learn the ropes. Get it right first before plunging in
2. There are lot of factors that one needs to really considered and find a way to work around.
3. practise¡ practise¡¡ practise¡¡¡. Farmer A succeding in year one does not automatically means that farmer B will be.

NOTE
I later found out my so called mentor has been feeding me with informations from the internet.

The farmers tomato did well due to soil factor.
My nursery were affected from too much use of chemicals.
waoooo, thanks for all these info,@Jethro 2 pls could you please share with us the chemical u over use @the nursery and what will you advice on how/how much of it to use. pls don't put full stop to these article, we need to learn from farmers. thanks.

sorry for my long epistle. the reason I wrote something this long is because I want to call people to reason. and see the errors in their ways. The 2 strong lessons I learnt from my poultry experience is that.

Never start any agribusiness you don't understand and have not practised. Even if you must do it, start small. Trust me, the best approach to the pool of farming is to dip your toe in first.
see why, if you fail in a big business, you are a big failure. if you succeed, you are a success.

secondly, before you implement anything anybody online tells you in your farm. pls verify the information from other experienced farmers. also verify the authenticity, and credibility of the farmer. Thanks
Welcome boss Good points.

SOIL STERILLIZATION: the aim of STERILLIZING our soil B4 nursing our seeds is; To keep the bed free of disease, to keep it free of pest (Egg) also to keep it free from weed seeds. Haven achieve these the the sEeds will grow well and perform better at the permanent site.

MTD of STERILLIZTION:
Heat method
Hot water mTd.

HEAT METHOD: the soil is gather and put inside pot/drum, set fire on it and allow till the top surface get hot.
One can as well make a nursery beds and gather fire wood or tire on the surface and set it ablaze.

HOT WATER METHOD: the soil will be gather as above, boil water and pure it on the soil, allow to cool and plant on it.

The main essence of all these is to put the above mention enemies (pest, disease, and weed) to check, because these organism can not survive/withstand high temperature, So by so doing they will be control and will have no effects on our young seedly.

Others should please come out with other ideas which will be helpful for all of us

Merci....
You see this topic was made to let farmers knows different error/sin commented while practising farming, I just want to share my experience with the house, several time I made estimate for farmers that when u plant so quantity of seeds, it will cover so so hectares of land, and u have x as ur result, but in most cases, x is not always x if the farmer start up the project and lost almost 45-50% of their seed to either pest, diseases while @ nursery. So I will advice farmer to please follow this am sharing so that we all will be happy at the end of the day.

Many pple recommend using seed tray while nursing seed, it is the best MTD, but very expensive.. Major advantages of using tray are: to prevent transplanting shocks, mobile and easy to maintain ie it could be done in ur compound, Don't worry Am going to teach u a way to improvise at least to get 75% of the advantage gotten from trays. I also promise to teach us the way we can use herbicides on our vegetable farm, I want to upload picture for better understanding. Also pic on how I used to raised my seed beds will be uploaded soon, Thanks and God bless.

I have made some mistakes in agriculture.

I once planted maize with a Spacing of 1m by 0.5m hoping to add fertiliser to the farm. I could not get fertiliser to buy from the state govt after planting. I had to thin down by uprooting some of the plants to reduce the density. Today I rely less on government inputs

I once rented a farm for farming without inquiring if there are farmers vs cattle herders problem in the area. Few weeks after we started the farm, problem started between farmers and the fulani people. Who would have thought that fulani can be a problem to farmers in delta state. They were actually taking guns to the farm looking for farmers to kill. We had to abandon the farm for some time. And after planting fulani started using my crops to feed his cows. Very pathetic. Today as a minimum I must fence my farm with barbed wires if fulani is within the vicinity. And I always ask now if our brothers who love cattle more than human life is within the vicinity before planting anything
Sorry for your lost sir, this issue of Fulani is just every where now. They have that gut....hummmmm... Similar thing happen to one of my farmer In OKAKA, after IPAPO along SAKI road, this man planted tomate of about Five acres, the tomato was fruiting almost ready for harvest, in the night cow just enter the man farm and stamp on the crops and believe me they ran away before the day break.... So painful. I think this issue of Fulani should be checked.
In some community like Iwo in osun state, the farmer have gone to police station and the DPO invite the Fulani around the area. So what they agree on was that they will pay for what so ever damaged caused by there animal. Provided the farmer could recognise or apprehend one of the cow.....

I don't have a recent experience. But a young relative planted many acres of maize. It was vastly devoured by grass-cutters/cane-rats.

I don't think he frequented the farm a lot after weeding. Around 70% was lost as they ate the pulp of the stem.

How do you guard against that?
I will advice regular weeding, The boundary shld be kept clean at least 1 metre space should be in between the farm and the nearby bush also trap should be set forget conservation in this aspect cos one sweat is at stake. God bless you.

@world1 some people will go to hospitals for check up, the doctor will recommend exercise to some, So I kept wondering why doing fruitless excerciese when we have fruitfull one in the farm...Come and burn your fat in the farm and have something to show for it.......... Great farmer.........
