I tried carrot some few years back. failed woefully. they carrots were are small as my little finger altho they were extremely sweet. their small nature wasn't encouraging at all.
@Jasper there are factors that makes ur carrot smaller, 1. is verity as mention by Pavore9, 2. spacing; if it is closely space u have very small one, the one I did last year, I notice the one I spaced well did well and big, the the once that were too close was very small and thinning. 3. is the soil must be very loss, carrot will penetrate well if the soil is loosen, also it require good amount of water at root elongated stage.........

Let wait patiently for the op to answer that question, cos I have planted different varieties of watermelon, with what I have notice and testimony from co farmers watermelon are very susceptible to pest, but I hope the op will mention a varieties that resist pest so we can adopt. Let wait for the answer, op we are waiting ooooooo.

This is a practical business and not laptop thing because
i can see different comments up there.

Ok let start,

Watermelon is among the best fruits recommended for people due to its nutritional value and health benefits, research has shown that watermelon is good for curing arthritis, obesity etc.The demand for watermelon has skyrocked over the years.Starting a watermwlon farm business can yield a massive profits as you can cultivate and harvest three batches in a year.

4 Reasons To Invest In Watermelon Business In Nigeria:
High turn over
Ready market for your produce
It is pest resistance
Very easy to start.

Reqirements for water watermelon
Large expanse of land
Sunlight
Good seedling

Starting watermelon Farm:
Get about 1hectare of land(15 plots of land)through leasing in a location where the watermelon can get 6 to 8hrs of sunlight each day.Perform land clearing, ploughing and harrowing.
Source for seedlings:
The next step is to source for healthy seedlings from already successful farmer or from professionals

Watch out for the next post.
@op you said said watermelon are resistance to pest, could you kindly mention the varieties you have planted (with picture) that has this characteristic pls tell us the veriety..?
AgricultureRe: Practical Farmers Pls Share Ur Bitter Experience, Let Learn From Your Mistakes. by Soloxam(op): 9:03pm On Jan 31, 2015
debeey87:
What could cause the bitterness
Good question, watermelon and melon (egusi) are the same family, they behave similarly, the taste of watermelon is sweet while melon taste bitter, I mean the juice so when they are planted they are pollinated by same insect here cross pollinated the bitter taste of melon will dominate that of sweetness of watermelon..........

senato123:
Soloxam could u do a brief run ur varieties n features n which would u appraise as best seed. Adding cost ain't bad.
@Senato, as regards the seed verities: we have water melon koloss f1, it pack in 50gs, Kolack is pack in 500g,100g and 10g, sugar baby is as well pack the same way kaolack is packed, we have chalenstine gray, it the oblong type pack in 100g, Tomato verieties we have open pollinated and Hybrids, the open pollinated are packed in 100g and 10g, the verities available now are, tomato Tropimech,uc82b,Roman vf,Roman savanah,Tima,Rio grand de,Buffalo. The hybrid verities are tomato Jaguar f1, Lindo F1,cobra f1,Nadira F1, panthern 17f1, copernic f1,kiara f1, Thorgal f1, kelvin f1. These verities all have specific season u can plant them, reason because the are resistance to different kind of disease which are always peculiar to a particular season, so when you come to us we tell u what to plant at a point in time, and they are some that can be planted any time of the year.......m As regards the price I can't mention now because the price list for the year is not out now so I won't want to be quoted that you told us a price and now we are ready to buy u are given us another price, am very sure there will surely be increment in price, and am sure u too knows the reason, increase in dollar rate....... But as at last year price list the hybrids tomato if u are buy in bulk its sold for 6k/50g, retails is 6500, u have minimal of 15000 seeds, the open pollinated, bulk 1900/100g, retail 2000 minimal of 30000seeds. Pls the price will change, am very sure about that the management are working on it. Thanks.

@Kalusam, i thank you for the input. I may have approached the wrong people for seeds but at the same time, i had limited time that was why i decided to import. Like i told you, i always run a pilot project before embarking on large scale, so the cost of seeds wasn't an issue to me, TIME was the main issue. Now, @kalusal and Soloxam, where can i get seeds in Lagos? How much is the weed barrier and how can i get it ASAP(Plastic Mulch). Please tell me now before I import o. Laugh!!!! (but i am serious).

I work in office 7am to 6pm everyday, the windows i have are Sat/Sun plus Public holidays, I work like donkey on these days with the help of my beautiful wife, very hard working. You can see reason why i cannot wait for so long for these farm inputs. Dry season farming is more profitable and we have very short window especially in Lagos that you cannot determine when the rainy season starts.E.g, I have been making money from Ewedu(Corchorous Olitorius) since December, I sell a bed of 3 feet by 7 feet 1,200 Naira minimum thank God for people that supply the seeds from Abeokuta we wouldnt have been able to get it easily. During rainy season the bed goes for as low as 300 Naira max, 500 and i have like 160 beds( free money) a paint rubber of the seed cost 4,500 anyways but we still churn out high profit. You can see the difference in dry season farming compared to rainy season.

PLEASE PARDON ME FOR MENTIONING EWEDU AS WE ARE DISCUSSING TOMATO. Didn't mean to deviate from our discussion,I just used it to drive home a point. House forgive me please.

Time na money my brother.
As for the seed I can send it to you in lagos when you are ready.

I don't buy land for people o, omoniles they craze especially if you leave the land fallow. @pavore, I don't know if you can get it in Nigeria but I couldnt find any since NOV. 2014. I called friends in Zaria, still didn't get any.

i wish i can really say what happened along the line.i guess i watered too much in the first two weeks.afterwards i became very busy because that i practically abandoned the farm for months.no TLC i suppose.
This crop is called watermelon, many people believe it a water loving plant but reverse is the case, the water supply should be very moderate.
It is every important to control pest in melon farm, failure to do so then there is going to be issue. Insecticide, fungicide, should be applied once in a week or fortnightly, otherwise the outcome won't be interesting, so if you can't avoid to work on ur watermelon farm once in a week or fortnightly pls don't waste ur resources...... Then when ur crop begins to craw, while spraying, pls don't just spray the surface of the leaves, spray behind of the leaves too, cos white fly and aphid do hide behind the leaves. They always suck the sap from the plant and hinder the plant from growing...... At a point u will notice the leaves will begin to shrink and dry off, most fruit will be deformed and get spoil..... Intending farmers watermelon need much attention than u may think of.

@soloxam,tell us about water melon nw,i planted water melon along side ugu(fluted pumpkin) last year.
the ugu blossom but water melon just dried off completely.
share ur experience with us please.
Sir the only bitter experience I have on watermelon was last year when I planted 2 acres of watermelon close to a village called Agbedo along ijaye road before ajibade. My watermelon was doing fine but the villagers will never allow me to harvest my produce before it fully mature. You will just see watermelon slice into two inside the farm, I want to cry but I learn a very great lesson. I was able to harvest cucumber on the same plot because cucumber is not eaten by most of the villager.... I loss all my watermelon to the villagers oooooo......

@Psalm68, let me ask u few question, did u plant ugu and watermelon together? Did u ever spray with insecticide/fungicides? If yes which one did u use and at what interval? What time of the year did u plant, was there enough water? So this will help me answer u well, thank for following.
