Tallvictor23: Sorry. I thought I saw sevis fee. |
Travel / Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 17 by Somatohadidas(m): 8:05pm On Jan 16, 2023 |
Tallvictor23: The sevis fee receipt is not what's needed to request an emergency appointment. It's a letter or document that proves that you need a closer date for the interview. |
Travel / Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 17 by Somatohadidas(m): 8:01pm On Jan 16, 2023 |
Tallvictor23: You shouldn't be so sure. Sevis fee payment can be made at about 72 (or 48) hours to your appointment date. Therefore, it's not needed to book an appointment. |

Kaka118: The person told you the truth. I have also posted a detailed procedure from admission to interview and beyond. I think you can find it two threads back. As for your situation, you have two options: it is either you immediately request an extension (day of your arrival) letter from your school/program and apply for an emergency appointment, or you defer your admission till Fall 2023. Good luck! 1 Like |

Nooziinoo: This assertion is wrong. I have seen folks with Master´s and Bachelor's Degrees from Nigeria getting into Biological Sciences and Biomedical PhD programs in the US. I agree that the competition for places in these programs is becoming very fierce year after year. However, saying that folks "should leave the programs for Americans" is not right—it might even sound demoralising to some people. Subsequently, I´d like to reiterate that having a first-class is not enough for this. It is important to have rudimentary (even intermediate) knowledge of the current software and tools used in the field. Particularly, for folks looking at the aforementioned programs, it is essential to have a working knowledge of R, Python, Basic Linux and related programs. Furthermore, basic knowledge of bioinformatics and wet lab experience (through internships). Trying your hands (analysis) on various biological data (related to your research area) in various public repositories to test your knowledge would be very beneficial too. It could even help you buttress your points about your passion and zeal for the field in your letter of motivation, statement of purpose or personal statement. Also, improving knowledge by enrolling in several Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and attending related (in-person/virtual) conferences and workshops (there are many available now—thanks to COVID-19). Having membership in National and International Professional Associations in your field should also be considered. The bitter truth is those you are competing with from the global north have robust opportunities to gain many experiences (wet and dry lab/conferences/posters presentations) before they finish their undergraduate studies. Therefore, you cannot come and tell them (the admission committee) to pick you ahead of them by having a first-class. So, it is not really about luck; check the profiles of those that got into these programs from Nigeria—you will understand what I am trying to say. I hope this helps someone. 7 Likes 1 Share |

BigIyanga: Ok. But how do you generate the SEVIS coupon without the SEVIS ID (usually found on the I-20)? |

The rate at which they ignorantly misinform others is alarming. It is here I see people yet to get admission dishing out Visa interview advice. Very pathetic. 1 Like |

Ambycris2020: After admission (and funding for those who need it), and you've decided where you want to go: ✅ Request for your i-20 from your school. Some give one or both of soft/hard copy, and you might pay shipping fee for hardcopy in some schools ($50 - $100). You'll usually supply details of passport page, ability to cover cost like funding letter or bank statement, etc. for this. ✅ Get the i-20. I'll suggest you request the e-copy even if the school wants to send hardcopy, so that you can use the details to book your visa interview while awaiting the hard copy. A4 printed of i-20 is acceptable at embassy. After i-20, the next 3 items can be in any order. ✅ Start filling your DS-160 form online at https://ceac.state.gov/genniv/ . You can use this video as a guide when filling it: https://www.facebook.com/287980197932222/videos/318718789713853 ✅ Create a CGI profile at https://www.ustraveldocs.com/ng/ng-niv-appointmentschedule.asp and pay for your visa fee, costs #67,200 with GT Bank, and book your date at your desired location if an available one shows. ✅ Pay Sevis fee. You can create a coupon at fmjfee.com but someone in the US has to pay it for you. It costs $350, but there might be a $10 processing fee and people's dollar rates differ. So expect a wide range when converted. To be safe, the payment must be confirmed at least 72 hours prior to your interview. ✅ Prepare for your interview and ace it.✌ ✅ Book your flight, typical ranges can cost from 250k - 400k for cheapest ones depending on location, or go for the more expensive and comfortable ones. Good luck. *Copied*. 12 Likes 9 Shares |

BigIyanga: Pay for SEVIS before handing out the I-20? Who would require that? As far as I know, proof of funding (assistantship/fellowship/statement of account/how he/she is goingto fund the study) is the only thing that would be required in order to release the I-20. |

Guruindahouse: I don't know where you saw these, but I wouldn't agree that the cause of their rejections was due to their residency status. Since you guys are lawful residents of that country, you have every right to apply for your US visas in that country. Also, you don't need a permanent residency before you can do that. Just your valid resident permit is enough. I am actually talking from experience(Germany). Interviews (with VOs) outside Nigeria are not as rigorous/chaotic (they are usually with ease) as compared to those in Nigeria. You just need to show them why you are going to the US and what you are going to do after the completion of your program. The spouse should also be able to convince the VO. In addition, Europe (just an example) wouldn't raise an eyebrow as to why you are going with your spouse to the US. Their social welfare and how they handle the issue of the family wouldn't let them do that. |

Gokoyer1401: It means that you have nothing to worry about (there is funding) if you are accepted into the program. If there is no need to secure a potential supervisor prior to acceptance (check with the program), go ahead and submit your application. 3 Likes |

Kobojunkie: Cos both countries don't have the same population size. Many make this mistake while comparing things, places, countries, and the likes. To be fair with comparison, you need to scale the quantity of interest by the same weight. Say, the number of homeless people per 10 000, 100 000 0r 1 000 000 inhabitants and so on. This reminds me of the recent arrow attacks that killed people in Norway. There were people saying the country is still very peaceful compared with the US death rates from such attacks. However, the pro-US group of the arguments brought in the population sizes of the two countries and said it was because the US has a larger pop size (which is true) than Norway. It was only when such attacks in the two countries were compared per 100 000 people (scaled)of the population that they realized the US indeed has higher rates of such attacks than Norway. I hope I was able to make myself clear with the explanation. PS: I'm not here to take any sides 1 Like 1 Share |

Kobojunkie: You need to adjust for population size. Nonetheless, Nigeria has far higher numbers than the US in totality. |

Mallamsahoo1: Waalaykum salaam warohmotullah wabarokatuh It was really due to Allah's rahmo. But I prepared very well also for the exam. If your CGPA is strong, you have an edge over some people. Then the exam, it was really tough for those of us that did it in OAU, people were complaining and it was really tough. What I will advise you to do is practice, practice and practice and don't leave out prayers. You can lay your hands on books on quantitative reasoning GRE pq and most importantly, CURRENT AFFAIRS that deals with WORLD. out of the 80 questions we attempted that day, if I can still remember, more than 40 are current affairs-world. English and mathematics (QR and VR). I think little of ICT. I WISH YOU THE BEST. |
