Maybe you need to check your dictionary to know the meaning of distinct. You may as well copy and paste what you wrote to your usual chatgpt to interpret it for you like a layman that you are. U sef check where I bolded what u wrote. muumu, you better go back to my previous post from the beginning and understand the basis of my argument…..I said the Egun is a sub group of the Yorubas with distinct dialects so how is it different from what was provided by AI? May the Aholu Menutoyi 1 rest on. 🤣🤣🤣fact indeed, according to an economic migrant from far away ibo land…🤣🤣🤣 AI Overview +8 Yes, the Egun (or Ogu) people are widely considered a Yoruba subgroup in Nigeria, especially in Lagos and Ogun states, due to shared history, location, and integration, though they are originally distinct migrants from the Republic of Benin with their own Gbe language and heritage, fostering a close, intertwined cultural relationship with the Yoruba through intermarriage and mutual influence over centuries. |

ariesbull: I am stating the facts... You might not be angry at me but I am reading your post ,you were insulting the other guy and that shows you are angry ! That's my deduction
Also .... This is what they said about themselves. We should respect that
Please read sir,
Egun history centers on migration from the Kingdom of Dahomey (modern-day Benin) to Nigeria's coastal areas, especially Badagry, driven by 18th-century wars, settling in Lagos and Ogun States as a distinct, resourceful group known for fishing, salt production, and unique traditions, preserving their identity while integrating into wider Yoruba communities and becoming vital to local economies, particularly in Badagry.
Origins & Migration Ancestral Homeland: The Egun (also called Ogu) people originated from areas within the former Kingdom of Dahomey, including Whydah, Allada, and Weme.
Reason for Migration: They migrated to escape conflicts and wars in Dahomey, with settlement in Badagry occurring as early as the 15th century for security, though later waves were in the 18th century. Settlements: They established significant communities in Badagry (Lagos State) and parts of Ogun State (like Ipokia), near the Benin border, becoming a major ethnic group in these regions.
Life in Nigeria
Economic Activities: Their coastal location led to a strong focus on fishing, maritime trade, salt production, and coconut processing, with women skilled in crafts like pottery and weaving. Cultural Identity: Despite intermarriage and integration with Yoruba communities, the Egun maintained their distinct language, traditions, and unique cultural practices.
Badagry's Hub: Badagry became a crucial Egun stronghold, a center for cultural exchange, and a significant contributor to the local economy due to its Atlantic access.
Key Aspects Egungun (Masquerades): While "Egun" refers to the people, it's also linked to the powerful Egungun tradition of ancestral masquerades, where costumed figures embody ancestors, though the people's history predates widespread knowledge of these specific practices in Nigeria.
Cultural Resilience: Their history showcases adaptability, as they built thriving communities while preserving their heritage, contributing significantly to the cultural tapestry of Southwestern Nigeria. you think this long piece of gibberish proves anything? I didn’t even bother to read it |

Hopez456: I took time to go through your posts on this issue and I could see people have corrected you yet you remain stuck in ignorance.
@xxxx999jon @Emmah123 @davoneskay have all stated what is, yet you're spewing thrash. Who do not know that Yorubas are also found in Benin republic? Or the Asantes found in Ghana and Ivory coast due to the arbitrary border demarcation by the colonialist?
The fact still remains that the Egun people are very distinct from the Yorubas in terms of culture and language, though they speak and understand Yoruba but an average Yoruba people can't speak neither understand their language.
FYI, I was born in Badagry had my primary and secondary education in both Badagry and Benin republic. I had very close interaction with the people, the culture and the environment.
The fact that a road is name 'Oba' Akran doesn't mean that Oba is the right word for king in egun land. 'Aholu' is the literal meaning of Oba.
If you still want to argue further, I am here. a load of gibberish……I have educated the people you making reference to and I don’t think I need to explain further…..go and read up on your history books and for your information my paternal grandmother is Egun from badagry and I also have business interests in badagry and I have lots of friends from there both Egun and of the Awori descends…..you are free to believe whatever rocks your boat |
