bayooooooo: Celebrate true heroes, not liars and fraud. I celebrate emeagwali because he is the first black computer genius known, not because of those egoistic claims he made. granted, he overrated himself, but he isn't a fraud, cos if he was, he would be prosecuted or jailed, I trust america and their respect for intellectual property. |

Fake doctor led NMA –Police 0 By Our Reporter on July 8, 2015 COVER, National
• Suspect: Blame system not me
From MOLLY KILETE, Abuja
A former chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has been exposed by the police as a fake doctor. He operated under the name, Dr. George Daniel. His real name is Martins Ugwu Okpe
Parading the suspect before newsmen yesterday at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the police said the 45-year-old man who has worked as a medical doctor with the Federal Ministry of Health, Abuja since 2006, rose to Grade Level 12 status, was after all, an impostor and fake.
Okpe was attached to the Research and Planning Department of the ministry.
Interestingly, the suspect, who is a secondary school certificate holder, became the NMA chairman, Federal Ministry of Health branch, where he was in charge of the welfare of qualified medical doctors.
He was among the medical volunteers trained by the ministry in conjunction with the African Union Support to Ebola out-break in West Africa(ASEOWA), Mission in Liberia, but declined to proceed for the trip after collecting all the allowances from both the ministry and the AU.
He also secured admission for professional training at the Centre for Disease Control, tagged: “Nigeria Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training (NFELTP), which is a post-graduate programme affiliated to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. However, his academic performance casts doubts on his competence as a medical doctor.
Okpe refused to accept blame for his crime. He heaped the blame on the porous system for not detecting his true status over the years.
Ironically, the “doctor” defended his action, saying he was in the system to correct the inherent errors and expose the lapses.
Police had revealed that the suspect stole the certificate of his medical doctor friend, one George Davidson Daniel, with which he gained employment with the ministry as a doctor and bears the name on the certificate.
The police said he would be charged with impersonation.
Force Deputy spokesman, Abayomi Shogunle, said the fake doctor was exposed following a petition to the Inspector-General of Police on March 10 this year by Festus Keyamo chambers on behalf of Martins Ugwu Okpe, an impostor that assumed the identity of Dr. George Davidson Daniel.
He said the petition was transferred to the police analytical tracking and inception centre for investigation.
According to him, the Federal Civil Service Commission had also written a petition against the suspect, dated May, 2015, when he was found to be engaging in unprofessional conduct and unwholesome behaviour of fomenting trouble, blackmailing and misleading health workers among other crimes.
Police said his trouble started after investigation carried out on him by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) found him to be fake and traced the records of Dr. Daniel, who is in a residency programme in Jos, to the Ahmadu Bello University, Faculty of Medicine, that contained a passport size photograph bearing no resemblance with the suspect.
Further police investigation showed that the suspect is a childhood friend of the doctor. He stole the certificate when he was his friend’s best man.
But Okpe, who said he had wanted to become a soldier, but failed to gain admission into the Nigerian Defence Academy(NDA), said he actually stole the certificate when his friend visited him at his home in Karu, Abuja, noting that he regretted what he did. I know this story, I actually meant emeagwali's own. |

Change2015: Recently in our own country a man has been unveiled as pretending to be a doctor for 9 years, and securing a job on that basis. Do we call it an ego problem, and why has he been asked to refund all salaries paid to him on the basis of his fake qualifications? Emeagwali did the same to a previous government pretending to be something he was not and charging fees on that basis. That is the definition of fraud, just in case you are still confused about that. sources pls..... |

Change2015: Giving yourself a title you have not earned is fraudulent, not a sign of pride,, quite the opposite. It is a sign of low self esteem, and an attempt to hide feelings of inadequacy. Til tomorrow bill Gates is still Mr. Gates, even the top performers on youtube are making a few million dollars a year, but we think a man who won a thousand dollars two decades ago is a "genius". Kim Kardashian must find that so very funny. How much do you think her security guard earns a month? Genius level... maybe the western societies are so dumb in not having him jailed or prosecuted. maybe you can be the first in petitioning that. dude his problem is an ego problem, not a fraud problem. |

Change2015: I have read enough to know there is nothing to him but lies and deception. If a man was constantly reminding you that he won a prize in 1990, won't you be pushed to enquire what he has done with his life since? I have enough self-worth and pride not to insist on making a fraud a hero. Just because he's black or igbo? There are always more worthy people around so let this crook be. I understand your position, but that remains your humble opinion. if emeagwali was fraudulent,in an advanced country like USA, he would be cooling off in a jail by now or be prosecuted. he won't even be called for public speaking anymore, or be featured in the black achievers lists in the western world. |

fulanimafia: I wonder if his fraudulent face has been taken of our stamps, he should be prosecuted in fact for his fraudulent and criminal ways. he is not a fraud sir...it is only in some part of this country that he is considered a fraud. in western societies, he isn't. he is the first black computer genius. he should not however, have accorded himself doctor and professor....he is proud. |

Change2015: Please do your homework first. Microsoft was formed not invented. The basis of the 'windows' operating system was based on the intellectual property of another that Microsoft was able buy out. And windows was neither original nor the best operating system on offer. Bill Gates has however shown more endurance and capacity in developing the Office software suite to accompany the operating system. What exactly have you heard from emeagwali after his one thousand dollar prize? His achievement was actually that he achieved the best price/performance ratio, but even that year on raw computing performance another team bested him. Was his achievement worth writing a book about? you are probably right that gates showed more endurance in further developing Microsoft, that is because there was funding for his work. emeagwali did not work with a team, he worked alone, that was why he was honoured. a team came first, while emeagwali came second. but because he worked as an individual, not with a team (which is ingenius) he was awarded for it. do us a favour and check any foreign report on emeagwali, you will appreciate what emeagwali achieved. in all fairness, he is the first black computer genius. he didn't have to be s Dr or prof to achieve that. |
Politics › Re: How Philip Emeagwali Lied His Way To Fame by SonOfEl(m): 11:08am On Jul 10, 2015 |
Change2015: It secured nothing. What has he achieved since that prize? Who has he worked for, what were his achievements? Even Ben Bruce pays beauty Queens more than one thousand dollars! Do you actually understand what genius means? The man has been coasting on faded achievement and could not do even a good PhD thesis so he shouted racism. Genius implies consistency of high intellectual output. Perhaps Goodluck really deserves that Nobel peace prize people have been talking about.
#change bill gates co-invented Microsoft at a larger percentage, but he is since done with inventing. all he is reaping are the dividend , is he not a genius? emeagwali got his own fame in supercomputing, and since then. he has been reaping the dividends in public speaking. am trying not be his advocate but his contribution in supercomputing should be acknowledged. yes his ego is annoying and misleading, but his contribution to supercomputing is worthy of note. |

Change2015: From his wiki page
Emeagwali received the 1989 Gordon Bell Prize for an application of the CM-2 massively-parallel computer. The application used computational fluid dynamics for oil-reservoir modelling. He won in the "price/performance" category, with a performance figure of about 400 Mflops/$1M. The winner in the "performance" category, Mobil Research and Thinking Machines, used the CM-2 for seismic data processing and achieved the higher ratio of 500 Mflops/$1M. The judges decided on one award per entry.[6][7] His method involved each microprocessor communicating with six neighbours.[3]
Emeagwali's simulation was the first program to apply a pseudo-time approach to reservoir modeling.[8]
However a $1000 prize in computing shows that the work is not particularly significant outside of certain applications. He dares not claim a doctorate there too. And there is zero mention of any patents or patent applications, and to be blunt if bill Clinton had not mentioned him would we have ever cared? There are many Nigerians, honest and hard working, talented, why must we hold on to this fraud who has very little to offer. whatever his claims are, his early achievement in supercomputing secured his place in the science of supercomputing. it is only in Nigeria that his frivolities are being overemphasized. go through foreign webs and see him cemented in history, not as a doctor or professor, but as the first black computer genius. also because the prize was #1000 at the time does not downplay the importance of his work. some scientists who have made solid achievements have not even being rewarded financially. emeagwali is boastful and proud, and that dented his personality appeal, but not his early achievement in supercomputing. |

Change2015: He is a fraud because he has attempted and succeeded in obtaining benefits by false pretences. His claim to a PhD is fraudulent, his bell prize was relatively minor and was obtained as part of a group, as far as the patent database knows, he has no patent applications awaiting approval. How else do you define fraud, or does tribe matter in that discussion? That he has managed to get away with his chicanery for so long does not make him any less of a fraud.
#change his prize was individual, although the first awardees was the highest performers, but they are a group. emeagwali singlehandedly had his own calculations. that was why he was given his own award. |
Politics › Re: How Philip Emeagwali Lied His Way To Fame by SonOfEl(m): 8:32am On Jul 10, 2015 |
emeagwali is not a fraud, he is still a notable computer scientist and geologist. I just think he overrated his achievements. he has been trimmed to proper size. his IEEE supercomputing achievement showed how very high his IQ is. but he is not an inventor as he has not received any patent for his works. they are waiting to be patented.
emeagwali's ego was overblown, an award in 1989 in supercomputing does not make one a professor. he made it easy for his detractors to drag him to the mud. however, is still celebrated across the world for his early achievements.
why all these noise about emeagwali? he is not even the most accomplished Igbo scientist in diaspora. patented inventors like Dr Achilefu, Dr Cyprian emeka uzoh, Dr ndubuisi ekekwe, Dr nchekwube, etc have done so much for science and technology, yet remain humble about it. |
