PoliticsLadoja, Akala Rejoin PDP by sonsomegrigbo(op): 7:47pm On Aug 02, 2017
…As Oyo, Osun stakeholders visit Wadata Plaza
By Dirisu Yakubu
ABUJA – Former governors of Oyo State, Rashidi Ladoja and Christopher Alao Akala were Wednesday represented at the reconciliatory meeting of the states PDP stakeholders called by the National Caretaker Committee Chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi.
Former Oyo governors Ladoja and Akala
The meeting which is part of ongoing efforts aimed at repositioning the party for the 2019 elections took place at the PDP National Secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Wuse, Abuja.
Represented by Senator Femi Lanlehin and Kareem Tajudeen, Ladoja and Akala are currently chieftains of the Accord Party and the All Progressives Congress, respectively.
In his opening remarks, National Publicity Secretary of the party, Prince Dayo Adeyeye urged the Oyo PDP stakeholders to sheathe their swords in the interest of the party, noting that their lack of unity was what led to the victory of Abiola Ajimobi in the 2015 governorship election in the state.
“The present governor is ruling with just 32 per cent of the vote cast because the PDP house was not in order. Let us make the PDP the winning party again because there’s no need to be in a party that is losing,” Adeyeye said.
Adeyeye also urged stakeholders of the party from Osun State who also visited the PDP secretariat to put their house in order, adding that “We want to bring everybody together and it is clear that all those maintaining hard-line position will not take us anywhere.
” We are aware of all the facts, I want to appeal to all of you to be more united more than ever before.”
On his part, Senator Makarfi appealed to the Osun PDP members to bury the hatchet, noting that the issue on inconclusive congress, if not resolved, is capable of hurting the party in the future.
Forum of ex- Presiding Officers pledges loyalty to NCC
Earlier, Forum of former Presiding Officers of the Federal House of Representatives while on a solidarity visit to the leadership of the party pledged to support the PDP ahead of the 2019 polls.
Led by former Speaker, Honorable Dimeji Bankole and Austin Opara, the forum called on the NCC to carve out roles for its members, promising to give its best always.
Responding, Makarfi thanked the ex-lawmakers for finding time to visit the party. He noted that now that the Supreme Court has resolved the leadership crisis in the party, it was time to translate same to political success.
“We’ve gotten judiciary victory, we need to consolidate and translate it into political victory. Political victory means expanding the scope of the party, reconciling with the reconciliables and attracting members into the party that will enable us regain political power at the centre by overwhelming majority.
“What I don’t want is for one party to dominate. We want a healthy competitive democracy where people will freely choose their leaders.
“We must have a large heart, but having a large heart doesn’t mean that we will not be conscious of the role played by each and everyone of us,” said Makarfi.
The NCC chairman further said the PDP is championing a level playing field where all the electorate will choose their representatives without any form of rancour.
“Let’s build a strong and virile political party. Let there be a level playing field for people to freely chose who they want to present as party’s candidates. That is the surest way to get to power come 2019. That is what internal democracy is all about,” he stressed.
Makarfi also stated that objectivity and transparency in running the affairs of the party so that nobody, whether old or new member would feel excluded is the way to go.
“We will stick to the party guidelines and constitution in doing whatever we do. We must stop cutting corners. We live in a high litigious society. When you cut corners thinking that nobody will see you, a lot of people will see you, at a time you least expect…
“We must consult on fundamental issues, use consensus as much as possible and move forward,” he noted.

CrimeNigerian Aboard Ethiopian Airlines Slumps, Dies Of High Grams Of Drug In Body by sonsomegrigbo(op): 7:40pm On Aug 02, 2017
By Vera Samuel Anyagafu
Fresh facts have emerged detailing how one Mr. Sylvanus Amachukwu Godwin, a Nigerian national with Passport Number A06011089 aboard an Ethiopian Airlines Flight 606 en-route Addis Ababa to Guangzhou, China allegedly slumped and died of high grams of drug in body.

Indications are that the late Godwin may have died of some drug in his body system but the airline authorities are yet to conclude investigations as to the proper cause of his death.

In a telephone conversation with Nigerian Consul General to China, Ambassador Wale Oloko, Godwin’s death was announced to the consulate when the aircraft landed at the Baiyun International Airport in Guangzhou, China. The consulate was informed that the Nigerian collapsed while in the flight and though first-aid measures were administered on him, he unfortunately died before the aircraft could reach China.

It was also learnt that the corpse has been taken to the Aviation Hospital’s mortuary within the Baiyun International Airport complex for expected post mortem to determine the cause of the sudden death.

Ambassador Oloko noted that the Mission is not restricting investigations on its part and has gone ahead to advise the management of Ethiopian airlines to use the information on the reservation system to reach the family of the deceased in Nigeria, with a view to arranging the repatriation of the body in line with the international aviation regulations, on the fact that the incident took place inside the aircraft and before disembarkation.

Moreover, the Consul General also said that the airport and Ethiopian Airlines authorities are insisting on a comprehensive post mortem examination and the Mission believes they are doing so in order to avoid and or exonerate the management from potential liability.

In light of the fresh development, Nigerians are urged to understand the dangers of drug trafficking and the negative impact on the country’s image.
This is necessary, following the backdrop of the many reported incidents of Nigerians that have been arrested at the airport upon arrival on Ethiopian Airlines flights with drug in their system.

PoliticsHearing On Melaye’s Recall Case Now August, No Longer September – Court by sonsomegrigbo(op): 3:01pm On Jul 27, 2017
The Federal High Court Abuja, on Thursday fixed August 7, to hear the suit that stopped the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from going ahead with the process of Sen. Dino Melaye’s recall.

The suit which was originally adjourned till September 29, will now be heard on August 7.
Justice Nnamdi Dimgba said he was reminded to exercise his discretion to hear the matter within the court’s vacation period.
INEC had through its lawyer, Mr Sulayman Ibrahim, requested accelerated hearing of the suit during vacation.

The Commission said it was constrained under section 69 of the 1999 constitution, as amended, to conclude the recall process within 90 days.
It earlier asked the court to vacate the interim order that stopped it from going ahead with the recall process.
INEC is challenging the legality of the restraining order that Justice John Tsoho of the high court issued against it on July 6.

Justice Tsoho had ordered all the parties involved in the recall process to maintain the status quo until September 29 when the case was previously adjourned to.
Earlier when the matter was called, two sets of applicants, applied to be joined as interested parties in the matter.

Michael Olowolayemi, through his lawyer, Mr Ponsak Biyan, applied to be joined as a co-plaintiff while three persons, Chief Olowo Cornelius John Anjorin and Mallam Yusuf Adamu, sought to be joined as co-defendants through their counsel, A. A. Adeniyi(SAN).

Even though INEC initially opposed their application, it subsequently withdrew its counter-affidavit to enable the matter to be heard expeditiously.
INEC lawyer however described the interlocutory application as a deliberate ploy to delay hearing of the matter.

Melaye, who represents Kogi West Senatorial District, had in the suit, prayed the court to declare the petition his constituents presented to INEC for his recall as illegal..

Dino had also prayed the court for a declaration that the petition forwarded to INEC was invalid and of no effect, alleging that it was signed by fictitious, dead and none existing persons

Travel6 Interesting Ways Technology Has Transformed Travel by sonsomegrigbo(op): 8:20pm On Jul 20, 2017
In the past, travelling individually, with friends or family members is usually a logistical mess. It comes with a lot of challenges that discourage quite a number of people from travelling. Fast-forward to today and with the intensity technology has been embraced in the travel industry, Nigerians can now travel with little or no logistical nightmare. Hence, there is no doubt that technology has definitely changed the face of travel. We share take a look at how technology has changed travel over the years.

Deciding you destination

Before the arrival of the internet, travelers have to go through holiday brochures at a travel agent’s office, buy guidebooks or taking a friend’s recommendation when it came to deciding where to go. Today, it very easy to decide as you can simply visit a well know travel blog, social media handle, or even your friend’s Facebook posts to choose where to go.

Booking a hotel

Then you have to saunter around to search for a hotel to lodge. This is very stressful and time-consuming. This is past tense as you can now book a hotel from the comfort of your room. Even if you find yourself stranded in the middle of the night, you can still call Jumia Travel to book a room in any of your favourite hotels. If you are in this kind of situation then, you are simply on your own.

Staying in touch

While travelling, you can send postcards, write letters and occasionally make a long-distance phone call from the hotel reception, or a local phone booth. Thus, staying in touch certainly wasn’t easy and most people at home don’t expect to hear from you unless it is an emergency. With your internet savvy phone, you can have real-time conversations with family members, girlfriend, friends, and wife via messaging platforms. Hence, no one needs to worry much about you when you travel.

Recording travel memories

You need the services of a camera man to take photos and videos of your wanderlust. As such, there is a limit to which you can take pictures and videos. But with your phone camera, you can take as many photos and videos as you so desire. You just keep clicking. You can share the pictures on social media and upload to your cloud. It will be there forever and you can access it anytime you like. Travel memories made easy!

Learning local languages

There are so many places you cannot visit because you do not understand their language. You have to look for an interpreter or a local. Today, all you need is a smartphone and you install Google Translate or iTranslate. With these apps, you can learn the basics of any language and it will help you communicate with the locals with ease.

You will spend less

The result of all of the above is that you don’t need to break the bank to travel unlike in the past. Armed with the right technology tools, you will definitely travel cheaply.

PoliticsAnambra Guber Polls: UPP Sells Form N5m by sonsomegrigbo(op): 6:46pm On Jul 20, 2017
The United Progressive Party (UPP), Tuesday in Abuja, announced that its nomination form for the Nov. 18 governorship election in Anambra state would cost N5 million.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Ogbuehi Dike, who made this known, told newsmen that each aspirant would also pay N500, 000 for “Expression of Interest Form’’.
Dike said the sale of expression of interest form would commence on Friday,

while nomination forms would be available for purchase from Monday at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.
He said the sale of forms would be followed by the screening of candidates for the primaries, which would hold on Aug. 19, 2017.

Dike said UPP was enjoying huge followership in Anambra, adding that the support would translate to success in the election.
“I can tell you that UPP is the party to beat come Nov. 18, 2017 in Anambra.

“It is not going to be a surprise if we win but it will be a surprise if UPP fails this Anambra election, because we are the best and we are also going to present our best.
“Everything we are doing now is geared towards the Anmabra elections to ensure that our primary is free, fair, credible and acceptable to our aspirants.

“So, as soon as we get our candidate, we will not rest on our oars until the Nov. 18 when we will be declared the winner of the election.’’
He urged the citizens to register and ensure that they collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) so as to participate in the election because, it was their power to elect the best candidate.

“So I will advise all Anambarians to go out diligently and religiously to pick their PVCs and choose the best for themselves.
`I also advice INEC to be an unbiased umpire in the Anambra election by doing everything to make sure that it will be conclusive.

“They should conduct free, fair, credible and acceptable election, anything short of that would discredit them ahead of 2019 general elections .’’

Dike, therefore, urged INEC to see the Anambra election as a testing ground to show to Nigerians that it was ready to give its best and produce a transparent result in the election.

PoliticsI’m Amazed At Osun’s Development Despite Meagre Resources – Ambode by sonsomegrigbo(op): 6:38pm On Jul 20, 2017
…As Lagos, Osun Governors renew calls for regional integration.

Lagos state Governor, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode, on Thursday , said he was amazed at the pace of development taking place in Osun despite its very meagre resources.

He said his administration would do everything possible to support Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun at ensuring the success of his government.
This was even as the two governors renewed the calls for and reaffirmed their commitments towards the actualisation of South-West regional integration.

A statement by the Bureau of Communication and Strategy, signed by its Director, Semiu Okanlawon, quoted the two governors as making the calls when Ambode paid a courtesy call on Aregbesola at the Government House in Osogbo.

From Left: Governor of the state of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola (middle); Lagos state Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode (right); and Secretary, Government of the State of Osun, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti (left) during a courtesy visit to the Osun Government house by Governor Ambode on Thursday morning.

Ambode was quoted in the statement as saying it was time for the region to fully exploit its potential by standing by what Aregbesola of Osun has been championing since the beginning of his administration.

He stated that the Lagos state government is fully committed to the regional integration of the South West for its economic potential to be fully harnessed and sustained.

The Lagos State Governor added that the time is ripe for all well-meaning indigenes of the region to rally round and ensure that the South West begins to rely on its economic endowments as means of being independent.
He said, “We have an historic duty to join Aregbesola in championing what he has been clamouring for, which is the integration of the South west.

“I fully commit myself to the integration of the South-West because I believe it is the only way the region can fully explore its potentials for the benefit of all.

“I can assure you that the South West has all it takes to stand alone and survive without having to depend on any external means of funding”
Ambode highlighted the developmental strides of Aregbesola in Osun, saying the Governor has laid unprecedented marks of development in the state.

He commended the Governor for being steadfast to weather the financial storm and challenges the state is passing through, while assuring the Osun government that Lagos State will support Osun with what it can to the end.

He urged Aregbesola to continue the good work, saying the reward of hard work is more work while also charging the Governor to ensure that the legacies are not destroyed.
“We are in consonance with what Aregbesola is doing in Osun.

I cannot begin to define how Osun has developed under this administration.
“I am particularly amazed by commitment to developing the state despite the tough economic challenges the state is passing through.

“I want to assure you that Lagos State Government will continue to support Osun till the end with all it can. I don’t want the development to stop and he should be reminded that the reward for hard work is more work.” Ambode stated.

Responding, Aregbesola said that any move for development in the South West without regional integration is like a child’s play compared to the kind of development the region will experience if there is full regional integration.

Aregbesola stated that the call for the regional integration of the South West must be taken beyond mere rhetorics, stressing that all the South West governors must work towards actualising it before the end of their current tenures.

The Osun governor said the only state that can survive on its own is Lagos, which he said is not too good because other states in the South West will be over dependent on Lagos if that happens.

He said it is in the interest of Lagos and other states in the South West to clamour for the regional integration in all aspects of life.
“There can be no meaningful development in the South west without the integration of the region.

“It is the only way we can fully take advantage of the comparative competitiveness that exists in our region. That is why we commend the efforts of the Lagos State Government on the move for regional integration.

“It is time for us as a region to take the issue of regional integration beyond mere rhetoric, we need to actualise it before the end our various tenures.

“I want us to set the shortest period of our tenure as the deadline to actualise the dream because it is the best for this region.”
“We must pursue the clamour for the southwest regional integration to advance social-economic, political and education relationship for the comparative competitiveness,” Aregbesola said.
