CrimeHerdsmen: Soldiers Deployed In Oyo To Foil Reprisal by sonsomegrigbo(op): 5:00am On Jun 02, 2017
Soldiers were yesterday deployed at Oje Owode town in Oke Ogun area of Oyo State to nip in the bud reprisal by the Yoruba youth. This followed the escalation of crisis that attended the killing of a popular farmer in the town by a Fulani herdsman.

The state Police Commissioner, Abiodun Odude, said the herdsman, now on the run, with some others, waylaid and attacked the farmer known as Jelili with machete in retaliation for the death of his cattle through poisoning. Odude said the police were on the trail of the assailants.

He said: “We are aware of developments there.

There is nothing going on in the state that we don’t know. It is a case of murder.

A farmer was killed because of his (herdsman’s) cow which he accused the farmer of killing.

“I have told their leader there to look for him and we will get him. We have stationed some men there.

So, there is calm in the place now.” A reliable source from the town, however, said that the crisis had escalated.

“Some youths in Oki have taken to the streets, protesting the killing of the farmer.

They are searching from house to house, looking for the herdsmen. Soldiers have been deployed there,” the source added.

The rebel province of Biafra in southeast Nigeria declared independence on May 30, 1967, triggering a bitter civil war.

That war lasted between July 1967 and January 1970, with millions dying from starvation as a result.

1. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu actually tried to lead, and he did.
He was a Nigerian military officer and politician who served as the military governor of the Eastern Region of Nigeria in 1966 before declaring Republic of Biafra independent in 1967.

But Nnamdi Kanu holed himself up somewhere in London spewing hatred, calling Nigeria a ‘zoo’.

PoliticsBuhari Administration Creates New Set Of Millionaires – Lai Mohammed by sonsomegrigbo(op): 6:32am On May 31, 2017
Abuja – The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Tuesday said that the Federal Government through its agriculture empowerment programme had created new set of millionaires in farming.

The minister stated this when he featured on a special edition of Channels TV programme, “Sunrise Daily” on the mid-term report of President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.

Mohammed said that many young farmers were empowered through the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Anchor Borrower Programme and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture’s Soil Map initiative.

He said that the programme, which recorded huge success in rice and grain productions, particularly in Kebbi, Kano, Jigawa, Ebonyi and Sokoto states, had made farming attractive to young people.

Mohammed said the initiative had also helped in boosting the local production of rice, increasing yields per hectares in grains production and reducing importation of rice.

He said that in 2015, the country imported 580,000 metric tonnes of rice, which had been brought down to 58,000 metric tonnes in 2016 with the successful implementation of the programme.

The minister noted that though the price of local rice was still higher than the imported one, but the situation would change when production increased.

He said the imported rice was being subsidised and dumped into the country but assured that the trend would change by next harvest.

The minister said that the government had also been able to bring down the cost of fertiliser from N9, 000 to N5, 000 following a bilateral agreement it signed with the Kingdom of Morocco.

Mohammed said that the country was gradually moving out of recession, particularly in the agriculture, manufacturing and solid minerals sectors.

He explained that it was made possible because of committed investments in infrastructure, ease of doing business and increased budgetary votes for capital projects.

“When we came in, we inherited about N1.7 trillion in debt owed to contractors; 202 roads were abandoned. In the entire 2015, only N18 billion was spent on roads and N5 billion spent on power.

“In 2016/2017 we released N1.2 trillion for capital projects only; we spent N260 billion on roads and N99 billion on power generation.

“We have constructed 320 kilometres of roads and fixed 460 kilometres of road: We have built 24 bridges and repaired about 21

“On rail lines, we have commenced the construction of the 150 km per hour standard gauge from Lagos to Ibadan and working on others across the country,” he said.

The minister reiterated that looking at what the government had done in areas of the economy, security and in fighting corruption it had fulfilled its electoral promises.

Mohammed said the situation would have been worse than it is now if Buhari was not in power, adding that he was proud to be a part of the administration.

He said in spite of recession brought about by defective economy run by past administration only on oil and the sharp drop in the price of crude, the administration has performed well.

“We are coming from a situation where we were earning over 100 dollar per barrel of oil and it was reduced to about 30 dollar per barrel

“It takes acute discipline and management of resources to be where we are today.

“In spite of recession, between October last year and today, we have been able to add additional 7 billion dollars to our federal reserves.

“We have also successfully added 87 million dollar to the Excess Crude Account and attract 500 million dollar to the Sovereign Wealth Fund,” he said.

On security, the minister said that the government defeated Boko Haram insurgency which had taken over almost half of the North-East region before the administration came into power.

He said government was taken pro-active measures to address the challenge of clash between the herdsmen and farmers and incidences of kidnapping.

CrimeCurbing Cultism In Rivers by sonsomegrigbo(op): 9:51pm On May 27, 2017
Curbing Cultism In Rivers

Growing up, we had many uniformed, voluntary clubs in most primary and secondary schools. Clubs like Boys Scout, Boys Brigade, Girls Guides, The Red Cross Society and others helped in the mental, physical, psychological and all round development of children.

These clubs enabled them to utilize their time and energy usefully and productively. Virtues of discipline, cooperation, time management, team work, courage, vision, determination, volunteering as well as patriotism were instilled in the children through veritable ways.

Today, the in-thing in most schools is cultism. Tender kids in primary schools are said to be members of different cult groups. The result is the high rate of crime and violence, drug abuse, alcoholism and other dreaded habits.

In various communities in the State and across the country, we hear stories of assasinations, raping, kidnapping and other criminal acts being perpetrated by the young ones.

Just four days ago, in what is fast becoming a dangerous trend in the state, a teenager , said to be a cultist, was beheaded at Rumuekini in one murder too many by ruthless cult groups. The following day, there was a report of youth clash in Omerelu which claimed some lives.

It is indeed quite worrisome that despite the effort of the state government to ensure adequate security and encourage investment, the ruthless cultists keep doing everything possible to keep Rivers State in the bad books. With the initiation of a painstaking arms surrender and amnesty programme for repentant cultists, many thought the problem of cultism would be solved in the state.

But that is yet to be achieved as many of them decided to remain in their evil act to continue shedding blood. Unfortunately some innocent citizens are caught in the web even as the cultists who could be leaders of tomorrow waste their lives.

Worst still, the police seem helpless and are more reactive than proactive. It is common knowledge that only when our security agencies act faster than the hoodlums we could be talking about meaningful policing and safety.

It is sad that some of these bad boys are notorious and had frequently gone in and out of police custody only to be released sooner than expected to wreck more havoc in the society. Why this is so remains a big puzzle.

It is therefore advised that there should be a re-orientation and re-approach to security matters by our security agencies, especially the police.
Most importantly, parents need to wake up to their responsibility of bringing up their children properly.

Often we are quick to blame politicians for arming these young ones and using them to commit crime both during and after elections and all that.
Of course politicians have a big share of the blame. Some analysts have always been of the view that the seed of insecurity no pervading the state was deliberately sown and watered by top political players in the state.

But as parents what role do we play during the formative years of these children to ensure that they are responsible?
What are the community leaders, traditional rulers, opinion leaders, youth bodies doing to make sure that these youths are of better character and useful to their families, their communities and the society at large.

These miscreants who wreck havoc in our towns and villages are known to the members of these communities, what have the leaders of these communities done to eradicate this malaise?

Cultism is a social problem which must be solved together as a people. The period of looking the other way when things are going wrong in the society or feeling unconcerned when a neighbour’s child is going the wrong way is over.

We must bring back the spirit of brotherliness, oneness and care which Africa is known for in solving this problem.
Above all, the uniformed clubs most be re-introduced in our primary and secondary and membership of at least one club made compulsory for all pupils and students.

This will aid them to shun violence and grow into responsible adults who will understand the need for positive family life, service to one’s community and nation as well as respect to fellow men in addition to encouraging them to strive towards personal growth, development and thus personal achievement.

Government must rise up and defeat this menace before what is left of our dear state is destroyed. The secret cult and similar activities (prohibition) Law No 6 of 2004, should be used to rid the State of cultists and make the state safe and secure.

Calista Ezea
