Christianity Etc‘mother’ Should Not Be Used To Describe Bomb – Pope by sonsomegrigbo(op): 3:29pm On May 07, 2017
New York –

Pope Francis has criticized the naming of the U.S. military’s biggest non-nuclear explosive as “Mother of All Bombs”, saying the word “mother” should not be used in reference to any deadly weapon.

(FILES) A video grab from 2003 file footage courtesy the US Air Force (USAF) shows a GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb prototype moments before impact at a test site at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.

The US military on April 13, 2017 dropped what is considered to be the largest non-nuclear bomb on an Islamic State complex in Afghanistan, the Pentagon said.

The GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb hit a “tunnel complex” in Achin district in Nangarhar province, US Forces Afghanistan said in a statement.

The Pope said he was ashamed when he heard the name of the U.S. most destructive non- nuclear bomb, reports said.

Pope Francis told an audience of students on Saturday that: “I was ashamed when I heard the name.
“A mother gives life and this one gives death, and we call this device a mother. What is happening?”

The U.S. Air Force dropped one of the bombs, officially designated as the GBU-43 Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB) on suspected Islamic State fighters in eastern Afghanistan in April.
The nickname was widely used in briefings and reporting on the attack.

Pope Francis is set to meet President Donald Trump on May 24 in a potentially awkward encounter given their opposing positions on immigration, refugees and climate change.

Lafia – Unknown gunmen on Saturday night, abducted the mother and sister of Mr Kassim Mohammed-Kassim, member representing (APC) Akwanga South constituency at the Nasarawa state house of assembly.
The Police spokesman in the state, DSP Kennedy Idirisu confirmed the abduction to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lafia.
According to Idirisu, the gunmen in their numbers, stormed the residence of the lawmaker at Moroa in Akwanga at about 8 pm and shot sporadically before whisking the two women away.
He said that the police was collaborating with the vigilante group in the area to locate the victims.
“As we speak, our men are already combing the areas in search of the victims and to apprehend the perpetrators,” Idirisu said.
He, however, appealed to members of the public to assist the police with useful information that could lead to the rescue of the women.
Meanwhile, a family source who preferred anonymity said the abductors have contacted the family and demanded a ransom of N30 million.
Efforts to get the lawmaker’s reaction proved abortive as he could not be reached on his mobile phone.

PoliticsRe: Calls For Buhari’s Resignation Equivalent To ‘civilian Coup’ – Group by sonsomegrigbo(op): 6:00pm On May 06, 2017
Ikwikwiii:
Buhari is a terrorist
I don't know why some people will just come to a social media platform and begin to write with their elbow and reasoning with their anus.

Mind you, it's not compulsory you write.

it's even good you only read and be informed.
PoliticsCalls For Buhari’s Resignation Equivalent To ‘civilian Coup’ – Group by sonsomegrigbo(op): 5:45pm On May 06, 2017
The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations for Good Governance has claimed that the several calls by some Nigerians for President Muhammadu Buhari’s resignation over his health issues is tantamount to civilian coup against him.
The group, at a two day Consultative General Assembly held in Abuja during the week stated that since the president has not told anybody he is unfit to lead, no one should force him out of power.
The group made up of representatives of 40 CSOs, which included the New Initiative for Credible Leadership, the Advocates of Social Justice for All, Lawyers of Mercy, Media Without Border, Beyond Leadership Legacy Foundation, described the calls for Buhari’s resignation as distraction to the current government.
The group, in a statement jointly signed by its Secretary, Joyce Adamu and Rev Steven Onwu, Chairman, Communique Drafting Committee passed a vote of confidence on the president to continue to oversee the nation’s political affairs.
The statement said, “In the past days, several notable persons have breached decorum to make demands that have no anchor in the Nigerian Constitution (as amended) like asking the president to take a medical leave.
“These calls are equivalent of civilian coup attempts since they are aimed at forcing President Buhari out of office over ill health that can befall anyone. The people making the demands based such on hearsay and rumors published as exclusive stories by less than credible online sites,” the statement added.
The statement further noted that no organ of state is currently suffering directly or indirectly as a result of Buhari’s health situation, adding that able appointees the president were running the various aspects they are entrusted with successfully.
“In the same space of time that wicked rumors are flying around, wife of the President Mrs. Aisha Buhari declared that the severity of her husband’s health was being blown out of proportion.
“Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele briefed the President on the apex bank’s currency management and relayed how the Forex stability excited President Buhari. Such brief could only have been presented to a lucid and healthy person.
“There is also no iota of constitutional crisis so far created by the ill health of the president as being propounded by some critics,” the statement further stated.
While calling on Nigerians to continue to pray for Buhari for quick recovery, the groups warned some them against spreading false story on the health of the president.
“We urge Nigerians to pray so that God will grant the President quick recovery and the country healing from the wounds inflicted by saboteurs.
“We also want to caution those spreading falsehood to desist from such especially in view of the negative consequences their action can have on citizens’ morale nationwide.
“Reactions based on this falsehood, like pressuring the president to proceed on medical leave, must be discontinued. Nigerians should only respond base on facts as conjectures would only complicate things for the country,” the group warned.

BusinessBreaking: DSS Arrests Ifeanyi Ubah Over N11b Oil Theft by sonsomegrigbo(op): 1:51pm On May 06, 2017
Ifeanyi Ubah, the managing director of Capital Oil and Gas Limited has been arrested by the Department of State Services.
Ifeanyi Ubah
The agency revealed the arrest today in a statement by spokesman, Tony Opuiyo.
Opuiyo aid Ubah was arrested on Friday in connection the theft of petrol kept in his tank farm in Lagos by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. The product was valued at over N11 billion.
The agency said Ubah’s action amounted to economic sabotage, with “capacity to negatively impact on national economy”.
Opuiyo gave additional reasons for Ubah’s arrest. He said he has further engaged in other activities inimical to national security and public order.
“In furtherance of his gimmicks to undermine the government and people of Nigeria, he has incited members of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD), a critical player in the downstream sub-sector of the Petroleum Industry, to refuse/stop the lifting of products.
“This is part of his plans to curry their sentiments and cause them to embark on strike and also stage protests in his favour with the ulterior motive of arm-twisting the NNPC to abandon the cause of recovering the stolen products. The implications of this on law and order is, in fact, a common knowledge. It is consequent upon this that the Service arrested and will prosecute him forthwith.
” The public is hereby reassured that the Service will collaborate with appropriate agencies to ensure that the mischievous activities of any person or group(s) to engage in illegal activities will not affect the effective distribution of products across the country. It will also support such agencies to bring to book individuals or companies involved in any criminal act that undermines the nation’s economy”.

Nigerians are indeed an interesting set of people. Someone comes out to share his experience as an expert (yes, 25yrs experience in any field gives you an authority of some sort) to the upcoming ones, and you all begin to attack him even before he finishes what he's saying. Where did you see him arguing with anybody?
No wonder many accomplished Nigerians don't feel it worth their time to mentor anybody.

CrimeJudge Accepts Efcc's Apology On Media Trial by sonsomegrigbo(op): 6:22am On May 05, 2017
http://www.promptnewsonline.com/judge-accept-efccs-apology-media-trial/

Justice Gabriel Kolawole of the Federal High Court in Abuja has lifted the embargo placed on hearing of criminal cases brought before him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over false dissemination of court proceedings by the commission.
The judge who had refused to entertain cases from anti-graft agencies accepted the apologies tendered by EFCC for misleading the general public in the trial of a case involving a serving Army Colonel Nicholas Ashinze and four others.
The EFCC through its counsel Mr. Ufem Uket promised the judge that his client will learn lesson and will no longer subject defendants in its cases to media trial any longer.
Before the apology was taken, EFCC had tendered newspaper publications where the offending EFCC press statements were refuted as directed by the court.
Also Vanguard Newspaper Editor and the Judiciary Reporter summoned in respect of the offending publication were let go following their defence that their report was based on a press statement issued by one Mr. Wilson Uwujare on behalf of EFCC.
Uwujare who is the head, media and publicity department in the EFCC had in a statement claimed that the serving colonel Ashinze had been indicted over a N36.8bn public fund diversion whereas, the defendant was charged with N1.5B public fund diversion.
The offending press release also referred to Ashinze as a Retired Colonel.
Following the acceptance of the apology, Justice Kolawole agreed to resume the trial of the case but warned the media and the EFCC to always report court proceedings accurately and to avoid unnecessary sensation in the interest of justice.
The Judge warned that extra caution must be observed by the media and EFCC so as not to pollute the mind of the general public on pending trials against the defendants.
Justice Kolawole had at the last adjourned date insisted that the trial of Colonel Nicholas Ashinze, a former aide to Colonel Sambo Dasuki and 7 others in alleged N1.5b fraud would not be resumed until the EFCC retracts fully the misrepresentation of the court’s proceedings that the defendants are being tried on N36.8b fraud.
The judge had dismissed the oral claim by the counsel to EFCC, Mr. Ofem Uket that the anti-graft agency had retracted the offending publication because the lawyer failed to produce any document or evidence before the court to ascertain its claim.
Justice Kolawole had on March 21, warned EFCC to stop media trial of Nigerians being put on prosecution for any offence and ordered that the alleged N36.8b fraud contained in the EFCC Press Statement issued by one Mr. Wilson Uwujare to media houses in the country be refuted to correct the court proceedings.
The Judge also ordered the news media involved in the alleged offending publication to appear before it and show cause why they should not be disciplined for misrepresenting the court’s proceedings by dishing out falsehood to the general public through the EFCC press statement.
When the matter was then to resume, counsel to EFCC informed Justice Kolawole that his client had already retracted the offending press statement as contained in some national dailies of April 12, 2017 but however failed to present a copy of the retraction to the court as demanded by the judge.
Justice Kolawole had disagreed with the oral evidence of the EFCC Counsel, lamenting that the counsel as a minister in the temple of justice has not shown any seriousness or do enough to protect the integrity of the judiciary from being unjustly rubbished.
The judge said that “No responsible judge will sit down and allow his court to be rubbished with falsehood as in the case of the EFCC that has been engaging in feeding the general public with falsehood
“It is a fact that the defendants in criminal matter will be prejudiced when they are unjustly subjected to media trial through publication of falsehood and misrepresentation of the court’s proceeding.
“Since the court cannot act in vain, it is hereby ordered that the EFCC must show compliance in the appropriate way with the retraction of the offending press statement it issued out in respect of the proceeding of this court.
“Let it be understood that the press as the fourth Estate of the realm has the responsibility of holding all arms of government accountable to general public but the press has no business in misrepresenting the court so that defendants in criminal matters would not be prejudiced and would not be found guilty though false media trial before the real court trial.”Justice Gabriel Kolawole of the Federal High Court in Abuja has lifted the embargo placed on hearing of criminal cases brought before him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over false dissemination of court proceedings by the commission.

CrimePrisoner Defrauds Banker Of N12.3m, Bags 162 Years Imprisonment by sonsomegrigbo(op): 6:29am On May 03, 2017
By Abdulwahab Abdulah & Jane Echewodo

A middle-aged man, Ikechukwu Ogbu, who is serving a 10-year sentence at the Kirikiri Maximum Prison, was yesterday sentenced to 162 years imprisonment by an Ikeja high court for defrauding a bank manager, one Chukwu, of N12.3 million.

The convict, Ogbu, was charged alongside Chuks Ibebugbu for conspiring to defraud Edet Chukwu.
They were arraigned on June 10, 2011 on a 10-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretences and stealing by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Ibebugbu was discharged and acquitted due to insufficient evidence.
Ogbu defrauded Chukwu between May and October 2009, pretending that he was detained by EFCC for bringing $2.5 million into the country.

He told the complainant that he needed some money to clear himself from the anti-graft agency, promising Chukwu that the $2.5 million in the custody of the EFCC will be deposited in the bank.
The (victim) Chukwu, a branch manager of a second generation bank, wanting to meet his account deposit targets, believed Ogbu’s tale and sourced for funds to enable Ogbu ‘sort himself out’ with EFCC.

Justice Okunnu, while reading her judgement, stated that prison officials aided the crime by allowing Ogbu open a bank account and wear regular clothes, which tricked Chukwu, during his visits to the prison, into believing that Ogbu was not a convicted prisoner.

Pronouncing the sentence, Okunnu said: “I have listened to the plea of counsel. I have noted that names of a lot of notable personalities were put on the line during the commission of this crime and I have also noted that the defendant has remained unrepentant.
“I sentence the defendant to 18 years each on counts two to 10. The sentence will run concurrently.”

Earlier, the prosecuting counsel for the EFCC, Mr. Nnaemeka Omewa, said: “In just two years of his serving his prison term, he committed this heinous crime; imagine what will occur when he is allowed to live freely in society.”

CrimeIshola Oyenusi: Armed Robber Who Smiled To His Death (Photos) by sonsomegrigbo(op): 10:30am On Apr 26, 2017
Ishola Oyenusi, popularly known as Doctor Oyenusi, was a notorious armed robber who terrorized the people of Lagos and other neighboring cities in the 1970s. Ishola Oyenusi and his gang of six were highly skilled in snatching cars, robbing banks, factories, stores and killing people like chickens. Doctor Oyenusi, as he was called, was not a doctor by profession but adopted the title for the fun of it. The evidence lies in a confession he made few minutes before his execution. He confessed that his parents were not capable of furthering his secondary school education and that was what forced him into robbery. So without having a secondary school education, Oyenusi by no way could have been a medical doctor.
.
Oyenusi started off his robbery career by snatching a car (whose owner died in the process) just because his (Oyenusi) girlfriend needed some money. It was said by some people that Oyenusi was romantic. He sold the car at the price of N400 and gave the money to his girlfriend. It was also said that Oyenusi was hot tempered and arrogant. During his arrest, he thundered down on a police officer who was ushering him around. He said, “ people like you don’t talk to me like that when I’m armed, I gun them down!”
.
Oyenusi came into limelight after the Nigerian civil war ended in 1970. He robbed banks and people in both daylight and night, and he never let any of his victims live to see another day, he killed them all! This earned him the name “ Doctor rob and kill “. At the height of his horrific reign, Oyenusi bragged that “ the bullet has no power“. He probably forgot that he who live by the sword will surely die by the sword. Oyenusi was so infamous that he was regarded by some people as the “ first celebrated armed robber in Nigeria “, and after him was Lawrence Anini, Babatunde Folorunsho (Baba oni lace), Shina Rambo, Buraimo Jimoh and others.
.
However, nothing lasts forever, and as the adage says, everyday belongs to the thief while a day belongs to the owner. On the 27th of March, 1971, Oyenusi was nabbed by the police during one of his robbery operations in which he and his notorious gang killed a police constable named Mr. Nwi and stole $28,000 as at then. Cloud of shame hovered above Doctor Ishola Oyenusi as he was casted before the law and found guilty then sentenced to death by firing squad. Oyenusi confessed that he was not to die alone because he did not commit the crimes alone. He vomited the names of other members of the gang which were as follows: Joseph Osamedike, Ambrose Nwokobia, Joel Amamieye, Philip Ogbolumain, Ademola Adegbitan and Stephen Ndubuokwu. Back then, public execution was the order of the day, so when Oyenusi was ushered to the popular Bar Beach in Lagos where he was to be executed, over 30,000 Nigerians were happily and excitedly waiting to see the man who had terrorized them get riddled by hot bullets. It was said that some civil servants even brought a coffin to the execution ground to mock the once mighty robber kingpin who was now nothing but a scapegoat whose breath would be exhausted in any moment.
Ishola Oyenusi being led to the stake
Trucks carrying Oyenusi and his executors arrived at the execution ground around 10:am. Doctor Oyenusi, his gang members and one other criminal got down slowly. People jeered and booed them, especially Oyenusi who they had really trooped out to watch die. Oyenusi donned a dark long-sleeve shirt and had his hands tied behind him. He was sweating profusely but managed to smile all the way to the stakes. He kept smiling, smiling and smiling but could still not hide the agony and terror written boldly on his face. Few minutes before he was shot, Oyenusi told journalists that he would not have ventured into armed robbery if his parents were capable of sending him to secondary school. He also said “ I am dying for the offense I have committed “. Oyenusi and other criminals were fastened to the stakes. The soldiers lined in front of them and aimed their ever ready guns. Some of the criminals yelled their last words of protest at the cameras. Then a loud voice let out the word “ fire “! Oyenusi and other criminal’s body were sprayed with bullets. That was the bitter end of Ishola Oyenusi who lived by the bullets and died by the bullets.
.
The execution of Doctor Ishola
.
Oyenusi sent the streets of Lagos deserted at night. Families locked themselves behind doors for the fear that some of Oyenusi’s boys might retaliate.

Doctor Ishola Oyenusi (circled) and his gang’s execution
This fear lasted long that even in 1977, the veteran movie director,
Eddie Ugbomah, called for actors to play the role of Oyenusi in a movie he was about to produce titled “ The Rise and Fall of Dr. Oyenusi“, but no actor was brave enough to step forward to play the role. They all feared that Oyenusi’s boys might show them pepper. Eddie Ugbomah had no choice than to play the role of Oyenusi himself. In the movie, he revealed the secrets of top Nigerian officials and military men backing Oyenusi and his gang by providing them money and weapons. As expected, Eddie Ugbomah was threatened and later, his store was looted. He was told in a letter to stop shooting the movie and everything would be returned to him. But Eddie Ugbomah proved not to be a coward by eventually releasing the movie in 1977. In recent times, a
Nollywood actor, Odunlade Adekola , also released a movie (Oyenusi) detailing the life of Ishola Oyenusi, the notorious Nigerian armed robber.
.
The name Ishola Oyenusi will forever be remembered in the history of crime in Nigeria.

PoliticsBuhari’s CSO Expels Punch Reporter From Aso Villa Over Ill-Health Story by sonsomegrigbo(op): 5:14pm On Apr 24, 2017
The Chief Security Officer to President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Abubakar, on Monday expelled PUNCH’s State House Correspondent, Olalekan Adetayo, from the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Abubakar had earlier summoned Adetayo to his office and questioned him on two reports he considered uncomplimentary of Buhari and his administration.

He referred to the lead story of SUNDAY PUNCH of April 23, 2017 titled “Fresh anxiety in Aso Rock over Buhari’s poor health” and queried the motive behind it.

He also referred to our corespondent’s column, Aso Rock Lens, published on Saturday, April 22, 2017 and titled “Seat of power’s event centres going into extinction.”

Abubakar asked one of his men to go and take our correspondent’s statement and revert to him.

He thereafter directed the Officer in Charge, Department of State Services, Victor Nwafor, to withdraw our correspondent’s accreditation tag and lead him out of the premises after retrieving his personal belongings from the Press Gallery of the Council Chambers.

Nwafor left an instruction at the Admin Reception that Adetayo should no longer be allowed into the premises after which he handed him over to another security operative who led our corespondent to where his car was parked to ensure he left the premises as instructed.

CrimeObanikoro Loses Bid To Restrain Efcc’s Right To Search by sonsomegrigbo(op): 5:05pm On Apr 24, 2017
A Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday struck out a suit by a former Minister of State for Defence, Sen. Musiliu Obanikoro, against the EFCC over its seizure of his properties.
The other applicants are: Obanikoro’s wife; Fati, his sons Gbolahon and Babajide and his wife, Moroophat.
Obanikoro and his family had sued the commission through their lawyer, Mr Lawal Pedro (SAN), seeking a court’s declaration that the forceful seizure of their personal effects constitutes a gross violation of their rights.
Musiliu Obanikoro
The applicants had prayed the court for an order to set aside the forceful seizure of their properties on June 14, 2016.
They had demanded an “unreserved public apology”, as well as seeking the award of N100million as general damages against the commission, as well as an order restraining the EFCC from arresting them or entering their premises again to seize their properties.
Besides, the applicants had also raised queries on the mode of execution of the search warrant; on grounds of irregularities, and had urged the court to declare the searches conducted therefrom, as unlawful.
Meanwhile, the EFCC (respondent) had opposed the application urging the court to strike it out for lack of merit.
Delivering judgment on Monday, Justice Abdulazeez Anka upheld the contention of the respondent and accordingly struck out the application.
Anchoring his decision on a plethora of judicial authorities, Justice Anka held: “The learned silk for the applicant seemed to have delved into the issue of search warrant at the hearing of the preliminary objection before the substantive suit proper.
“The learned SAN seemed to have cautiously or otherwise, argued the substance of the main suit by attacking the search warrant at the stage of preliminary objection.
“At the stage of a preliminary objection, the court ought to avert its mind to whether it has jurisdiction to entertain the action. In any case, the court will reluctantly flow with the tide in other to address the issues raised.
“The gist of the applicant’s case as contained in the affidavit in support is that the EFCC which is investigating the offence of fraud involved in the Office of the then National Security Adviser(ONSA),discovered large sums of monies paid into various companies whose signatories are the third and fourth applicants.
“Subsequently, the commission applied to a Lagos Sate Magistrate Court for a search warrant of the applicant’s house, with a view to recovering the incriminating items that will aid its investigation.
“The said warrant was said to be executed in the presence of the first and second applicants as exhibited in Paragraph 9 of the affidavit in support of the preliminary objection, and items and documents recovered are as contained therein.
“What I can deduce from the argument of the learned SAN is the alleged illegality of the search, as well as evidence adduced; the question, however, is whether at this stage, the court can be justified in declaring the said search as unlawful.
“It is my view that the EFCC has the statutory right to investigate and prosecute offenders and in the process searches are imminent.
“In my view, the legality or otherwise of the searches as well as evidence obtained can be taken up and thrashed when such issues come up for hearing.
“The test to be applied in determining whether evidence is admissible is relevance; if such evidence is admissible, the court is not concerned how it was obtained.
“The respondent has exhibited a certified true copy of the search warrant which was obtained from the magistrate court of Lagos, as well as documents recovered.
“Hence, parties ought to sheath their swords until such evidence are adduced in court when parties will have opportunities of objecting to the admissibility of evidence.
“Approaching the court three days after such search is conducted in other to quash same, will in my view, amount to pre-empting the possible outcome of the criminal trial which is yet to be embarked upon.
“This application to declare the search and seizure of properties illegal, is in my view, akin to pre-empting objection to the admissibility of a document in the main suit.
“In the light of the above, I hold that the preliminary objection succeeds; this application is hereby struck out.
“Parties have a right of appeal, and I so hold,’’ he ruled.
NAN reports that the commission had claimed that Obanikoro received suspicious payments from the ONSA through companies linked to the family.
For instance, the commission said that about one million dollars was transferred from the ONSA to Mob Integrated Services on March 18, 2015.
The applicants, however, claimed that the commission violated Regulation 13 of the EFCC (Enforcement Regulation) 2010 which provides that it shall “apply and obtain” a court order to enter and search any premises.

PoliticsFG To Reward Whistle-blowers On Illegal Weapons – Presidency by sonsomegrigbo(op): 10:20pm On Apr 23, 2017
The National Security Adviser, Maj-Gen. Babagana Munguno (rtd) has began work on a template for the discovery and recovery of illegal weapons through a reward system.
Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, confirmed this development in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday.
According to the presidential spokesman, the Office of National Security Adviser (ONSA) is adopting the whistle-blowing approach so as to eradicate mass shooting incidents and remove the harassment of law abiding citizens by holders of illegal weapons.
He said the proposed adoption of the whistle-blowing policy on illegal weapons by the Federal Government followed the success of the policy in the recovery of huge amount of questionable and stolen funds by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Shehu, therefore, said the presidency had started drawing up the rules of a whistle-blower mechanism to throw a spotlight on the regime of gun ownership and control as a bold move to prevent and eradicate illegal ownership of small arms and light weapons in the country.
He said that this would be a sort of searchlight on weapons ownership in the country, adding that the aim was to disarm communities especially those with proclivity to violence.
“In the last few days, we had discussed the efforts the administration is making to strengthen the whistle-blower mechanism in the Ministry of Finance, which to date has proved to be very effective in bringing the attention of the government to stolen assets and unexplained wealth.
“The ONSA initiative may be an independent line of inquiry or in active collaboration with what the government is doing in Finance. This will be a sort of searchlight on weapons ownership in the country.
“Whatever form or shape it takes, the administration wants to take a tough line to curtail the large number of illegal weapons in circulation used in intra and inter-communal conflicts,’’ he said.
Shehu disclosed that the ONSA had already inaugurated a committee saddled with the responsibility of the recovery of small arms and light weapons in the country
The blowing policy, which has been approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) is meant to expose fraud and other related crimes in both the public and the private sectors.
The policy was devised by the Ministry of Finance aimed at encouraging anyone with information about a violation, misconduct or improper activity that impacts negatively on Nigerians and government to report it.
“If there is a voluntary return of stolen or concealed public funds or assets on the account of the information provided, the whistle blower may be entitled to anywhere between 2.5 per cent (minimum) and 5.0 per cent (maximum) of the total amount recovered,’’ Minister of finance Kemi Adeosun said.
The policy has recorded appreciable success as it has led to the discovery of billions of Naira in the last few months since it started.

…..BUHARI, the SGF and NIA
….Oke and the NIA debacle
By Levinus Nwabughiogu
President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, shocked many Nigerians with the suspension of two key government officials, thereby reaffirming his resolve to stamp corruption out of Nigeria. This is how it happened.
Anyone with rich knowledge of their affinity would not bat an eyelid to believe that his suspension wasn’t an easy decision to make. Obviously, President Muhammadu Buhari must have rolled over and over on his bed many nights, deciphering between two hard choices of either keeping him and continue to face public bashing or dismissing him and stomach what people may say of their friendship.
For months, calls for his sack had continued unabated but the President remained unperturbed. Even when the calls reached a crescendo, he remained unmoved.
But just when no one had an inkling of it, the President lowered the sledge hammer, suspending him from office on Wednesday, April 19. He is Babachir Lawal, the hitherto powerful Secretary to the Government of the federation, SGF.
To many people, this is hurricane Buhari.
President Buhari, Babachir Lawal and Ambassador Ayo Oke
Their relationship
Lawal and Buhari had had a long standing father and son relationship. This dates back to 2002 when Lawal formally joined partisan politics. Buhari was his sole attraction and, from that time, he worked assiduously in each election year from 2003, when the President fired his first shot at the Presidency, to the 2015 presidential election when he finally won.
And so, it was not a surprise to many people when, in August, 2015, Buhari appointed Lawal the SGF. But then, both men were obviously oblivious of the evil that was lurking around.
Of course, except for what could be called Buhari’s due diligence and thoroughness, Lawal would have long gone. He became a candidate for eviction in October, 2016 when the Senate called for his sack. Why? A committee of the Senate, which investigated spendings from the funds earmarked for the welfare of the Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, through the Presidential Initiative on North East, PINE, found Lawal complicit and recommended that he be shown the way out.
At the peak of the matter, the SGF apparently became temperamental and fired back at the senators, calling their demand “balderdash”. The spat that later ensued between him and the Senate assumed an embarrassing dimension. Yet, the Senate stood its ground.
To appease the senators, Buhari, in December, 2016, ordered the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, to initiate a probe of Lawal’s activities at PINE alongside the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, whose confirmation by the Senate had been stalled due to allegations of corrupt practices too.
Apparently, the report of the committee was not favorable to the senators who insisted that Lawal must leave.
The suspended SGF also shunned an invitation by the Senate to appear before its committee in March this year. He later wrote a letter to the committee, informing it of a legal suit he had instituted on the matter.
But barely 24 hours later, the SGF wrote another letter, asking the Senate to reschedule his appearance. But that didn’t happen until last Wednesday when Buhari fired him.
Lawal, a member of the cabal?
Lawal’s carriage at the Villa, especially during Wednesday’s meeting of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, allegedly portrayed him as a member of the kitchen cabinet of the President. At a time, he reacted to speculations that he was being called the member of ‘a cabal’. Also, one still can’t forget that a leaked memo of Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State to the President pointed in his direction as a member of the `cabal’.
At FEC meetings, Lawal was ‘chief whip’ and the council chamber was his. To this end, he called the Ministers to order and, to many people, he did it with arrogance.
Lawal was also described in some quarters as a careless talker. He was said to have on one occasion made Vice President Osinbajo a subject matter. He also reportedly jokingly told Buhari that the Vice President, Minister of Labour, Senator Chris Ngige, el-Rufai and, at a time, Governor Adams Oshiomhole, were reducing the average height of APC government with their diminutive stature.
Recovered Money
The joke was said to have been very expensive to Osinbajo who had to wait patiently until an opportunity presented itself during the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, NGF, valedictory session for former Governors Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo and Oshiomhole of Edo States on February 16, 2017 to reply him.
Jokes were flying amongst the governors who noted they were members of the ‘Elite Club’ of short people also called the ‘Association of Short People of Nigeria’. Nasir el-Rufai, who was at the event, elaborated on that.
When it was time for Osinbajo to speak, he said: “The club, as El – Rufai said, is one that comprises Dr. Chris Ngige, El -Rufai, Oshiomhole, and my humble self’. It is an Elite Club but people tend to take the matter to a great extreme. A certain gentleman by name Babachir Lawal , who is the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, told the President one afternoon that all of us that I have mentioned have reduced the average height of the leadership of the APC.”
That was Lawal. But to be fair to him, he sometimes overreaches himself.
Suspension comes days after el-Rufai visited Buhari
Historians will be quick to document that Lawal’s suspension happened days after el-Rufai, who had told Buhari in his leaked memo that some persons were clogging the wheel of progress of his government, visited the Villa after many months. The governor was to tell journalists that he was hated to be seen around the President by some persons, but assured no one could bar him from seeing Buhari.
The burden of friendship in anti-corruption chase
With the suspension of Lawal, one thing now stands clear: Politics, power and friendship don’t mix especially when a President is resolute on an anti-corruption crusade. From what is known, Buhari is serious with the war against corruption and would not compromise, irrespective of whose ox is gored. His appointees know this and many have since tamed themselves of avarice and gluttonous desires.
Oke, NIA DG’s dilemma
Meanwhile, Lawal was not the only top official of Buhari’s government that was suspended on Wednesday.
The Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, NIA, Ambassador Ayo Oke, was also suspended.
Oke is not known to be a partisan politician. Appointed by former President Goodluck Jonathan in November 2013, Oke had occupied the office for almost four years until the fateful Wednesday.
Many see him as an architect of his own downfall. How? The NIA, under his watch, allegedly got involved in the discovery of the $43 million at Osborne House in Ikoyi, Lagos. Hardly had the EFCC uncovered the money alleged to be proceeds of crime than the NIA jumped to claim its ownership. Many people were taken aback as to how and what the agency did with the money.
To unravel the circumstances, the President suspended him.
Osinbajo’s three-man-committee on course
Meanwhile, to investigate and unravel the circumstance, the President the same Wednesday announced a three-man-panel.
The panel, headed by Osinbajo and has Malami and the National Security Adviser, NSA, Babagana Monguno, as members, has since commenced sitting. It has 14 days to submit its report to the President.
The drama of how both men were caught unawares
It appeared that Lawal and Oke were not in the know of their suspension on Wednesday. Apparently, as of the time the announcement was made, the SGF was in a meeting with the Vice President at the Presidential Villa.
On hearing that he was around, State House correspondents decided to wait for him. Immediately, he was sighted coming down, journalists went to him to get his reaction. But Lawal, in his usual manner, jokingly called them ‘419ers’.
He also expressed surprise at the attention on him. As journalists’ questions came in torrents, he acknowledged that they had never taken snapshots of him the way they did that day. “Something was amiss”, he must have thought.
When he was told that he had been suspended by the Presidency, the SGF asked: “Who is the Presidency?”
The session with journalists was nothing short of a drill as everyone later filed outside the building where Lawal waited for his vehicle to take him away.
Oke’s arrival
Minutes after Lawal was driven out, the convoy of the DG, NIA, Oke, drove into the Presidential Villa.
On sighting television and still cameras ready to capture him, Oke, who had alighted from his vehicle, marked KSF 309 DH, asked his bodyguards to look for an alternative route to the Vice President’s office.
This took them to the back of the building but there was no alternative door.
This time, to prevent clear camera shots, his body guards provided a human shield around Oke.
Minutes after, they all jumped back into the tinted vehicle and drove straight to the President’s Office through the Service Chiefs route. But they were denied access by security men on duty.
After about two minutes, the vehicles made a u-turn and drove out of the Presidential Villa in a bid to avoid journalists.
Will they return to office?
This is the question on the lips of many people. A lot of people believe that they are gone for good to help the anti-corruption war of the President. Though the statement by presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, used the word “suspension”, some people believe it was euphemism for good riddance to bad rubbish. But whether Lawal and Oke would return to office after 14 days lies in the report of Osinbajo’s committee and, ultimately, with the President. Indeed, Buhari, even though battling health challenges, is still in charge of his government. He showed that on Wednesday.
