Programming / Re: This Is What A Recruiter Told Me About Software Developers From Nigeria by Sososo(f): 4:04pm On Oct 11, 2021

I receive at least one email per week with the same question. I hope to create a thread soon where I'll share my own journey and practical tips to transition from a learner to landing the first remote job. I can't address it here cos it'll be too long. The problem is alot of people are learning which is good but they're doing so in a way that makes them unattractive to employers especially foreign companies.

Not to brag but I got my first remote role just 4 months after I started learning. I ascribe that to favour and the fact that I had a clear path to follow which others too have followed and achieved the same result. There is no secret here whatsoever, everything is available in public space for free. Of course, individual realities will differ.

Lindner:
I've engaged with some developers on nairaland about this topic and out of frustration, I just surrendered.

Since the pandemic and the popularization of remote work, it's no longer news that western tech companies now look to source talents from Africa and Some parts of Asia. The rationale is to cut cost.

A recruiter that recruits for some of these tech companies recently told me that they no longer disclose potential salary budget to candidates from Africa, especially Nigeria.

She mentioned that they are always shocked at the salary expectations of candidates. She went further to state that 9 out of 10 candidates from Africa request for between 20% to 80% below the budget of the companies( Even though the company is already saving a lot by recruiting from Africa). And the fact that she mentioned Nigeria specifically got me a little angry.

Why tf will you guys be asking for $500/month for a software development role no matter whether its entry level or not? What values do you place on yourself? Just because you live in Nigeria? A cleaner does not even get paid $500/month in those companies. Do you feel good knowing the colleague you'll be working with is earning ×5 of what you're being paid and you're probably even adding more value. Don't you get angry?

The painful part is that some of these companies didnt even offer to pay you these miserable salaries, you requested it yourself.

Sometime ago, on another thread here on NL, on the same topic of remote job compensation, some folks came to the thread with alot of justification why $500/month is a good offer. They cited exchange rate, poverty rate in Nigeria, how there's no job and every other pathetic reasons why they should slave away to a western company. I can't even begin to reason the ones that are hawking their "skills" here on NL offering to build a full fledged e-commerce site with integrated payment solutions for 10k naira.

I don't care what you say, if you know your shit and have good self esteem, you can earn as much as $4k/month. Before you come here and start reciting all the impossibilites in your books, know that I'm writing from a position of knowledge. I have statistics and real life examples to substantiate this figure. I myself have been working remotely even before the pandemic.

I wouldn't have bothered to even write, but this development is now coming back to bite some of us just because we answer the name Nigerian.
pathetic

I learnt web design in Digital Dreams in 2014 at No 1, Chime Avenue... The CEO's name is Mr Edoga and he is a UI/UX experts who drilled me so hard. It was always tough to please him with your UI designs.

I was tutored by Mr Benny, Osas and Mr Ifeanyi then.

Wonderful guys who know their trade well.

It's been 7yrs but I still appreciate their work and will recommend then anytime, Any day (if they are still in operation) because they gave me good value for money.

Tech is the new oil.

Someone just made millions of dollars couple of minutes ago online, all while sitting in his room.

When I see many Nigeria youths who claim to be jobless but these same youths sub data and waste all data and their lives every moment going from one celeb page to another on SM commenting on wetin no concern them. Fighting on BBN, Pessi and Penaldo etc. Wasting away everyday.

Is it not young people like you sponsoring BBN this year? Does Ronaldo even have time arguing about himself? He's always busy in gym building himself to earn more.

But Nigerians youths roam internet aimlessly everyday, wasting away but later they'll blame village people.

Many people poverty na follow come and follow go. It's a choice.

Hi guys. Things to consider for the Tony Elumelu Foundation
1. Be fluent in speaking
2. Know your product well
3. Have a proper pitch deck show casing your product
4. Do a summary video of your product not more than 3mins in video
5. Do a business plan for your product and have it ready (They might not need it)
6. Ensure to have at least one member of your team on ground
7. If you can do a brand (Tshirt of Cap) ensure to wear it during your pitch or video
8. Know your financial analysis well and ensure your business is able to make profit

I guess this could be kick starter for you.

Am here for further questioning. God bless you
how do you do all this for a startup

Programming / Re: When Does A Beginner Become A Programmer, And Should Start Applying For Jobs? by Sososo(f): 8:21am On Mar 04, 2021
jelel6:

I don't know the reasons why you want to learn programming. But I think for most people, they learn because they want to make a career out of it. So, on that note, I'll try to answer your question:

Yes, one can learn different things together, but it's highly undesirable and won't help you go far.

Programming is a problem solving technique used in many different Fields (such as: Mobile, Web, Systems, Development. Etc.). The major element of PROGRAMMING is a programming language like Python you have mentioned. Python it self can be be applicable to solve problems in many different Fields.

Now, a company will want to hire you because you can solve problems for them. The more challenges you prove to them you can solve, the more likely they'll want to employ you. And you want to do that within the shortest amount of time possible. Now, these areas like Web and mobile are very wide and you'll never be able to know everything about any one of them even if you study for 100 years. Imagine moving from one place to another every single week? That is not the most effective and efficient use of your time and efforts.

Instead, pick one and stick to it until you master it and get a paying job. From there, you'll be able to make informed decisions because your wisdom is broader. I'll advise you pick web development first since it has more jobs on the market than Mobile development.

As for the materials, you can learn everything easily on the web for free. The only thing is that you just have to look for learn resources yourself and put them together to form a comprehensive knowledge base. You can go on a site like Udemy and pay for a video course if you think you can learn better that way.

Good luck on your journey.
thanks.i already started with web dev like you suggested and im doing it in a school like setting. i hope to delve into python soon when im done with web dev .
