He bragged about his loyalty as he put the bags in the trunk. Tonye nodded impressed then glanced at Kirsten who couldn't help smiling. Considering the fact that two hours ago they were not even aware they'd be travelling anywhere but this driver had been waiting for them. That was the problem with Nigeria. The people didn't have fear of God. they were more comfortable telling lies than the truth. Tonye settled into the backseat Tthen remembered the market address the kidnapper had sent to Rex's phone. "No...no....Kirsten give him the market address, No.......let's check on Olivia" Tonye said. She glanced at the driver who was patiently tapping his wheel waiting for directions. "Which is closer? The market or the hospital?" "Actually the market is closed off" the driver said "Why...what happened?" "Didn't you hear? There was a bomb blast in the market not up to thirty minutes ago" "Bomb blast? How...when.....hope there was no....." Tonye trailed off disoriented. It seemed the pivot of her reality had shifted closer to insanity, nothing was making sense anymore. She could only scream in her mind for little Emma and pray the girl was not hurt. Kirsten's phone gave a shrill beeping sound and she answered "hello.....yes she's ere.....hold on" she leaned back and gave the phone to her boss. "Its short Sam" Tonye remembered she had switched off her phone. She took the phone wondering the juicy intel S.s had for her this time around. "Hello S.s?" "Hello....look that your agent, your inside man....he's in danger, a hit has been put on him, to the real shadow himself." "Ryan? In danger" 'Yes! You need to alert him as fast as possible and trust me...you should be careful, the fact that these people were able to identify him so fast shows that they're quite sensitive, take precautions! like this call we're having is secure...I made sure of that...okay, S.s out!" Tonye powered her phone on in a haste to call Bigelow and warn him. She scrolled through the recent calls and was about to dial her number when something Short Sam said came back to her. They were sensitive, and that was coming from an outsider. She could tell first hand what they were like and could bet her organs that they were on to her already and her phone was no longer her's alone. "Driver please can I make a call with your phone? My card just finished" "Oh no problem..." the driver removed his phone from the dashboard and unplugged the charger. Tonye thanked him and copied the number thinking of how she could warn him without revealing anything for the driver's benefit. He didn't pick the call and she wasn't suprised. With the way he had rushed through the call earlier he was clearly in a situation....maybe fighting for his life? She swore when he didn't pick the second time then quickly typed a message. It's Tonye! You are in danger, S.s intercepted the counselor put a hit on you...gave the contract to a deadly hit man! She hit the send button then deleted it from the phone memory. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: The phones kept ringing and ringing. Sounding like machine gun fire. Detective Dagnet was dumbfounded, open mouthed and when she managed to speak, foulmouthed. She had sent 5 men to their graves! Five husbands, five fathers dead because of her decision. If only she had waited like Tonye suggested, if only......! She muted the TV in her office only for the radio to take over the airwaves. The same news on the radio, they were calling it a suicide bomber, extremist groups sticking their tongue out at the law. Nothing more. Dagnet frowned as she considered the nerve of the OAP. Nothing more? Five women had been widowed in the blink of an eye, more than five children had lost their father and this oap with a terrible personality was Probably sitting in a air conditioned office saying nothing more. She could hear phones ringing from every corner of the station and one in her office too. "Hello" she answered prepared to slam it down if it was another reporter. "Hello ma....the director would like to see you" The director's secretary said> Dagnet wished it was a reporter. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Bigelow at first had been heading to one of his personal hide out. A small shack in a village in Badagry he always went there when he wanted things to cool down and lay low. He watched his phone ring as a strange number called, there was no way he was picking the call then decided it was best he switch of his phone before he got too curious. When the message entered, he read it again, and again, it was unbelievable. Just like that? What about the oath he had taken? All the years of service and the counselor was just going to end it all like that. End his life just like that! He shook his head. He wasn't going down without a fight. He swung hard to the left and made a sharp u-turn. He couldn't afford to be a sitting duck waiting for the assassin to come for him, and that was what he was in Badagry, a farmer who crossed the border every day to sell his crop. What he needed now was to watch his back and he knew somewhere he could do that. ::::::::::::::::::: The middle belt memorial hospital was privately owned by an ex governor who had built the hospital with state resources but made sure the property was in his name and legally his. Tonye paid the driver then she and Kirsten headed for the open gate. Inside, they walked briskly trailing the young doctor that had offered to take them to the room. "Her husband has been here for hours, just waiting....its really devastating" Tonye and Kirsten exchanged a glance. "I'm, sorry did you say husband?" "Why, yes of course....there he is" The doctor pointed at Buzz who was leaning on the wall beside the entrance. He stood up straight the minute he saw them. "Agent Tonye" he greeted "What are you doing here?" "Agent Bami said we should protect Olivia in the hospital so I 'm here....Clyde is with the family back home.I'm looking out for her incase the crazy bitch comes back" Tonye nodded something nagged at her brain but she coul'dnt place her finger on it..... She entered the office and the doctor called out; "don't wake her oo" Olivia was asleep and both her legs were in a cast. Tonye stood still as she studied her best friends face. The colour had been drained out and fresh worry lines stretched between her eyebrows. Kirsten also stood unable to speak, she studied Olivia in horror. Cause even in sleep the face showed the nightmare it had recently gone through clearly. Buzz came in after a while and the three of them stood round the bed watching her sleep. "Why did you tell the doctors you were her husband?" Tonye asked Buzz after a while. He had been expecting this question And had a ready answer "when I got here, I thought it would be wise to stay anonymous just incase someone still wanted her dead and it just happened that the doctor mistook me for Rex so I didn't correcvt him." "Tooh! No problem then, any news from Clyde?" "Not since earlier today " Buzz replied and somthing nagged Tonye again but she couldn't seem to wrap her head around it. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Bigelow followed every vehicle within his field of vision, studying the car and occupants with fast eyes and swiftly making judgements. After a while he was sure he was no longer being followed. Why? Because of the assassin coming for him? A greater predator? Still he tried a last evasion technique just in case and changed lanes facing the traffic and flashing his hazard lights. When he was finally sure he had shaken off the tail he trafficated and drove into a housing estate. He drove past the buildings for ten minutes then he parked in front of one and looked around the quiet neighbourhood for a minute before getting down and jogging up the stairs. He pushed the bell repeatedly when he got to the door until he heard his voice. "Arinze if I find you playing with my bell again eh-!" A middle aged man barged out the door angrily and his words trailed off immediately to be replaced with an excited shout. They embraced and Bigelow said "I trust you are well brother" "Of course, I'm as well as can be, i've resumed my full excercise schedule which I stopped since the accident" he stretched his hands in a 'look at me' gesture. He was fit. "Good because I'm afraid I bring an unpleasant guest along into your Home" "What exactly is the problem?" "I have Money on my head" "who doesn't....it's a good thing to have money on one's mind" "no Tom....I have money ON my head" "Damn!" "The worst part is that the baddest assasin in the whole fucking country is the one with the contract" Thomas Bigelow, a year younger than Bigelow was more suited for the big brother role and he assured his brother. "Well did you come here to sulk or you came to survive?" Bigelow smiled tiredly "you're right....I trust you still have those guns I like" "Of course, once an army ranger always a ranger..." |

"Short Sam I don't need a lecture, it was my former job remember?" Tonye interrupted the hacker "Right....anyway I was able to find correspondence between the counselor and a man called real shadow" he paused waiting for her reaction. "That was the sender of the mail Rex received about 4 days ago, but he's dead now" "Well unless its his spirit that is sending mails and instructions, I'd say he's very much alive" S.s said "What do you mean...he has been Identified already, he's dead!" she insisted "Tonye what is the one possibility we overlooked even when the clue was staring us in the face?" Short Sam asked in a wise voice. Tonye sighed as the car slowed down due to the traffic ahead. The good news was they were almost there, the bad news was they were almost there. "Sam, I don't know...please tell me Anything you know" she said in a tone so tired it was almost sarcastic. "Mr Kehinde truly was the chief of security at Sunrise steel...truly its his body lying in the morgue as we speak...but he was never the real shadow" S.s said "Then who? How?" Tonye was extremely baffled "What does the name Kehinde stand for?" Short Sam said mischievously. She rubbed her brow and considered it for a minute then she sprang up suddenly "twins!" "exactly...where there is a Kehinde there must be a Taye or in this case Taiwo and he is the real shadow....the strange thing is he has a lot of clout...the counselor does anything he asks immediately he asks..." "how come no one has heard of him all these while...?" she asked "that's the ingenuity of it all, using his brother's identity he very well hid in the open, which was why there were sightings of him in Denmark one day and the next in Ondo." "My God how come no one ever thought of that" she muttered "his identity is so buried it hardly exists...if not for the death of Mr Kehinde that blew his cover, everyone would continue thinking it was the CSO, not to talk of how easy it must have been to disappear for him cause truly that man is the real shadow...he instigated fear in the counselor himself and there was a mail I came across where he instructed the counselor to Include Fome' in the most wanted list to smoke her out but the counselor replied regrettably that he didn't have enough influence for that kind of decision and the real shadow replied saying he would handle it" "So he was based in Europe?" "Europe o, South America o, they're plenty, he was everywhere and its hard to say which one was him which one was Mr Kehinde but I believe he's in Nigeria at the moment" "I don't suppose you were able to get an address?" "I have a direct pathway with administrator rights and a lot of information to sift through just give me some time I'd get you your address" "Okay, I'd call you when I land....S.s thank you and good job" "oh this is nothing, you should thank your inside man, he made this happen" "yea right...alright I'll keep in touch" She ended the call and thought of what she had just learnt. Maybe she should call Bigelow at least to find out if he was okay. As the taxi inched about the parking lot for a place to park Tonye made up her mind and called Bigelow. "Hello Big..." "I'd contact you...don't call again" he interrupted her and cut the call immediately. She got down from the taxi feeling more worried and decided to switch off the phone the minute she made contact with Kirsten. With that thought on her mind she dialed the number. " Ma I'm waiting for you...I can see you already, just walk straight you'll see me" her assistant said immediately she picked. Kirsten instructed her and the moment Tonye sighted her standing excitedly, tickets in hand she switched off her phone immediately. They were just in the nick of time and boarded the plane before the gate was closed. :::::::::::::::::: Agent Kevin knocked on the counselor's door and waited patiently for a reply. "Enter" The counselor was writing something but glanced up and leaned back when he saw the fidgeting agent, he spun the chair lazily about and played with his knuckles. "Agent Kevin, you have something for me?" "Yessir! Bigelow received a call few minutes ago from a number. A woman. But he rushed the call before we could triangulate the location...So I called up the call log from the service provider and got the number. I latched on to the number just as it made another call...the call lasted enough for us to trace it to the airport, local airport. She switched it off but I identified her as Mrs. Tonye..." "Where is she going?" The counselor snapped impatiently "I called up the log and latched on to the other number which was still on. Sir I can say affirmatively that they boarded a flight to Benue" The counselor began to stroke his mustache. ::::::::::::::::::: The adress was a market place in the busiest area in Makurdi. It was a huge shoping complex with shops scattered about selling every kind of goods imaginable, both perishable and non-perishable. Stall F12 was the specified shop and futher invesigation had turned out tyres were sold there, it was around the area spare parts were sold. Kirsten rattled off the details to an amazed Tonye. This girl was something else! ::: The address being discussed thousands of feet in the air was currently busy with the everyday bustle of business transactions. and as lieutenant Vilcroy of the Metro police tactical force arrived at the hospital with his fellow officers they looked more like an assault team. They all had the blue fatigues of the police force and wore bullet proof vests over them and they held clean APS-95 assault rifles. The people immediately scampered out of the way getting into shops or standing to the side and staring in awe. The officers were 7 in number meaning Vilcroy had 6 men under his command. Detective Dagnet had told him about the kidnapped child so he instructed two officers to remain at the main entrance of the market and he went in with the remaining four officers leading the way like the true captain he was even though his rank said lieutenant. He glanced at the stalls as they hurried past, guns at the ready. 'B7,B8,B9,B10.... It was still a long way to F12. :::::::::::: She wanted to take Buzz's advice and lay low but there was no time for that. She wasn't here to play games. she could hardly contain her anger when she saw the pickup truck screech infront of the complex and rifled serious looking officers jumped out and disappeared into the market immediately. Her eyes hardened and she ground her teeth so hard it hurt her jaw. That's it...time for plan B. she dialled a number, a 7 digit number On her phone and immediately a countdown began running. The shop was rigged and going to explode in 5 minutes. she crossed the road and continued pushing her ice cream cart. but this time the tune was off, she didn't want to draw attention to herself. She headed back towards the apartment where the little girl was still sleeping. It was typical of Rex to always find a way to force her hand or alter a well thought out plan one way or the other. As she pushed the cart cursing Rex silently for failing to show up and instead running to the cops, her phone rang and she used the bluetooth earpiece which was concealed under her neat grey hair. She scratched her hair Violently and pressed the button in the process. "Any news?" "Yes....I just received the news that Rex is in a hospital in Lagos....he and the other agent were attacked and brutally wounded early this morning" "Did you get the name of the hospital?" The voice paused before answering "no, but I can find out" "Do and let me know immediately" "Roger" when she patted down her hair, ending the call discreetly her mind was made up; she would head to Lagos now that the agency was practically handicapped, she would get to Rex direct and look into his eyes when she told him he won't ever see his daughter again. But first she had to look like a mother...or grandmother For the trip, as a matter of fact her ice cream vendor look fitted the profile just fine but she was not a fan of the heavy weight, she would have to change that details. So she would get the baby bag, back the sleeping baby and head to Enugu first, then Onitsha then an overnight bus to Lagos. It would be foolish to take a flight with a kidnapped baby. Journey by road was the surest and what better time than when the baby was sleeping? She pushed the cart and left it under a big mango tree. She walked away to the main road and flagged a bike. If any one saw the cart and decided to help him/herself to free ice cream it was their cup of tea. She was getting out of Benue in the next 30 minutes. :::::::::::::::::::::::: Andy came around with a headache. He was in bad shape but not as bad as Rex and Bami. His injuries were as a result of a fight while theirs was a beatdown. He was on the bed in the lab and he swung his legs to the side and winced as pain shot through his rib. His stomach was bandaged tight however and for the first time he noticed his body was all gauzed up. Plaster over his swollen eye, bandage over his ead, on his elbow... he was wrapped like an Egyptian mummy! The doctor was nowhere to be found and Andy sat up. feeling embarassed that a petit young lady had put him in this condition. However he felt the bandages were excessive and unecessary. The Only serious pain he was feeling was from his abdomen whenever it contracted as he breathed in and even that he thought he could handle. He had to get going. But the question was get going where? :::::::::::::::::: E39, E40,E41,.......E49,E50, F1,F2.... Lieutenant Vilcroy moved swiftly getting closer and closer to stall F12 and the impending doom waiting. Finally they got to the shop. The lieutenant used hand signs and gestures to instruct the men and they spread out. The shop gate was wide open and one of the officers at the far end threw in a canister of tear gas while the remaining officers got into position, on a knee with their rifles trained at the entrance, waiting for who/what would come running out. After a while lieutenant Vilcroy believed either the suspect; 1. had passed out inside the shop 2. Had a gas mask 3. Wasn't in the shop. The officers moved gradually towards the entrance. The point man was short and light on his feet and had perfect aim. He was the only one with a gas mask. He zig zagged across the entrance then performed a cartwheel and disappeared into the foggy room. Vilcroy and the rest remained just outside the gate and beyond the stinging gas but just close enough to provide firepower if the need arose. "Clear!" Called the point man who they had nicknamed 'Lukaku' although he was the complete physical opposite of the footballer. ''It should take the gas about two minutes to clear out so we can enter...we need to tear this place apart until we get answers" Vilcroy announced ::::::::::::: She glanced at the countdown on her phone. 00:03:52 ::::::::::::::: Bigelow knew he was being tailed the moment he left the agency. He kept a sharp eye and was impressed with the method the agency employed In tracking him. A little creativity was involved not just the traditional car a little distance behind weaving between vehicles to maintain visual. The only problem was he was privy to such methods and had a magic eye in spotting them. Like for example the station wagon driven by a man and his two teenage sons that followed him from the office till he got to oshodi. Then there was the danfo bus that appeared around oshodi and trailed him to mile two. At a point the bus was even ahead of him. The bus wasn't on duty, the door was shut and the driver and another man in the front seat were the only occupants. They were trailing Him in shifts! When Tonye called him he instinctively knew that the line had been compromised and rushed the call. :::::::::::::::::: Counselor Mark had twisted and twisted his mustache that it was begining to resemble a shoe lace. He chewed on the information the agent had dropped in his lap earlier then finally made up his mind. He powered up the computer then logged in to his secure account. He selected a conversation thread and selected the recepient address @realshadow He typed a short message. A senior agent has been snooping around diging into the Fome case. Surveilance find him to be in alliance with hostile forces. He is a verified threat. Attached is a copy of his picture and last seen location. I repeat, he is a verified threat. In his workplace, the room he Liked to call 'the dark room' (because the only source of light was from the half dozen monitors) Short Sam sat up immediately and hit the keyboard with machine gun trigger finger movements. He exclaimed, stood up, sat down again, stood up, scratched his head, sat down again. The reply mail had arrived almost immediately; 'would take care of it' In a frenzied state, S.s tried Rex but there was no answer, same with Bami...Andy's line was not reachable while Tonye's was not available. Of course she should be thousands of feet up in the air by now. But then he reasoned the plane should have wifi atleast and he could reach her through whats app call so he dialed and dialed and it rang and rang but there was no reply. Short Sam turned in his chair restlessly. He had just witnessed a hit being placed on agent Ryan Bigelow and there was no one to tell. |

post too long as usual... Contd... :::::::::::::::: Bigelow wished he was armed as he walked slowly and self consciously to the counselor's office. He could feel Bulky practically breathing down his neck. He had garlic breath and it was nauseating. He stopped at the strong oak door with an empty nameplate this was the Counselor's office. He knocked nervously "Enter its open" Bulky said from behind him. And since when did you become the counselor? Is this your office? Bigelow thought irritatedly but instead he nodded and did as he was told. He had only been in this office once or twice before and it wasn't how he remembered it. It must have been renovated recently. However the most noticeable change was that the counselor wasn't in. "Settle down, he'd only be a minute" Bulky said pointing to a comfortable looking chair at the other end of the table. "I'd rather stand thanks' Bigelow replied "That wasn't a request" Bulky snarled Bigelow felt a magnetic reaction immediately pulling his rear to the chair. An inner door opened and the counselor emerged. The sound of the toilet flushing swept into the office along with an ungodly smell. "Wheew.....thank God only me gets to use this toilet.." his eyes narrowed when he saw Bigelow, just a fraction but Bigelow noticed it. "Well well well....agent Ryan, it has come to my notice that you've been fooling around and disturbing agents from doing their work" Bigelow didn't reply...if any statement from the counselor didn't have the intonation of a question mark he wasn't replying. "Now I want to know what you're up to Ryan...what are you playing at?" Bigelow tried with his utmost determination not to look back at the Bulky giant who was still breathing down his neck. He could almost feel the cold hands grip his neck and squeeze.... "Honestly sir...i Didn't know he'd take it serious it was just a joke" "A joke eh....well I fail to see the humour in it...is it funny to you Bulky?" "Its very dry sir" The giant replied "Anyway I think you need some time off to consider your priorities, if indeed you are an agent or if comedy is your true calling" Bigelow held his breath "what do you mean sir?" "It means you're suspended! Tender your gun and badge immediately" If it was just a suspension, Bigelow would take it gladly. He removed his wallet and reached under his driver's license, he removed the card identifying him as a secret service agent and tossed it on the table "And your gun?" The counselor prompted "I'm not armed sir...I hardly carry my weapon On me" Counselor Mark played with his mustache as he considered. Finally he shrugged "alright you're dismissed....leave the premises at once" Bigelow stood up but he paused "sir....what's the duration of the suspension?" The counselor twisted his mustache he looked annoyed when he replied but his voice was controlled and calm "I don't know...when its over you'd be summoned...now leave or let Bulky escort you" Bigelow hurried out of the office releasing his pent up breath. He couldn't believe his luck...and that was the problem...he didn't trust luck. He was too much of a cynic Bulky stayed back in the counselor's office. "Should I make him a memory?" "No not yet.... I want him shadowed and monitored....someone put him on to the file..and he's going to lead us to the person" "And then they become memory? Bulky asked "Oh yes my man....they become past tense" :::::::::::::::::::::: Tonye made up her mind when Kirsten sent her the flight details. The flight was scheduled to take off by 4:00 which meant she had roughly an hour to get to the airport. Bami had finally woken up but he didn't speak, just stared straight up into the ceiling. Rex on the other hand was very vocal even though it was obvious talking caused him immense pain. "You booked two tickets.....I...I....I'll go with you....I have to..." he kept on saying over and over At the end the doctor had to inject sedatives into his bloodstream knocking him into a deep slumber. Tonye considered her next actions. She was flying to Benue. Okay. The question was who was the second seat for? She didn't want to involve any junior agent and then again Clyde and Buzz were there already. That was more than enough firepower. She left the hospital after instructing the doctor not to let any one in the room. No matter who it was! The doctor nodded catching her drift. She would call Rex's assistant Jimoh to come stand guard. She booked a taxi with her phone and strolled round the hospital while waiting the estimated 11 minutes before the vehicle reached her location. She worried about Bigelow, he hadn't called in. Although they always tried as much as possible to minimize contact. That was what held her back from calling him now. He had done the mission, fulfilled his part, that was what mattered.. he wouldn't appreciate her risking his identity with unnecessary. So she sat down in the waiting hall/reception on the ground floor and played candy crush on her phone instead. Her phone rang when she was on a hot streak and she picked it soo fast almost without staring at the caller ID. It was her loyal assistant. "Hello Kirsten" "Hello ma, did you get my message?" "Yes...i'm heading to the airport right now" "Is there....is there anything else I can do for you ma?" Tonye didn't know why but she found herself saying. "How about you accompany me to Benue I may need your assistance over there" Kirsten shrieked happily "I would not let you down ma, I'd start heading over straight away...see you in the airport....Oh how I've waited so long to be on the field!" Tonye suddenly didn't think it was a good idea. "You know what...the situation is dangerous maybe it would be better if you just-" But Kirsten was saying "oh I won't let you down ma....I promise!" Then the line went dead. The taxy finally arrived and she settled in the back seat. "Please turn on the a/c" she said The driver was a stutterer "ah....m.-m-m-m-m-m...ma..madam...t-t-t-that one na-na extr-ra one k-k ooo" "No problem....please step on it I'm in a hurry" she hoped Dagnet didn't go ahead with the rapid response plan...it was bad enough that the flight was the same time the suspect had given in her message she couldn't afford to miss the flight- Literally, with the expenses doctor Rasheed had informed her earlier plus the expenses that had been/would be spent during the course of the investigation, the agency was on a tight rope. And one flight had been wasted already.... Her phone rang breaking into her thoughts with a start. It was Short Sam. "Hello S.s..." "Hold on to you're hats....cause I have something heavy to drop on you" |

He had a neat mustache which he always toyed with just as he was doing this very moment. He was 55 years old and had been with the agency for over 20 years. He was a no nonsense man, whispered about but hardly seen. He had a kind of effect on his agents that made them always want to please him for a pat on the back. The counselor rotated the chair till he was facing Bigelow fully. "Cat's got your tongue agent, why did you try to access the file?" "Well....I was just browsing through the archives...there was a case I was looking at earlier....about the bomb blast in the North...well I had the idea to cross reference the case details with any file we have on explosions" Bigelow said breathlessly. The counselor looked at him, his expression saying he didn't believe the story one bit. "I really must commend you...you think fast on your feet" the counselor said with a smile. Bigelow said nothing. "Let me tell you officially now...on the record, the file is off limits, top secret and above your pay grade, do you understand?" "Certainly sir" Bigelow agreed wholeheartedly. "That's all for now. You're dismissed" Bigelow turned and left the office with the flash drive still in his breast pocket. Outside he relased the breath he had been holding and considered his options. After some seconds he headed towards the small offices wishing he could walk out the éxit instead. He approached the very last office occupied by a young man in his mid twenties who had a sharp look in his eyes. "Heey....you guys are always focused on the computer, so help me out...give me some action..anything!! I need to be in the field and I'm bored senseless right now....There has to be something to investigate." He leaned over the table and his hands danced behind the cpu looking for a usb port. The agent just looked at him blankly then without a word continued staring at the three dimension pie chart on the monitor. Bigelow glanced round the cluttered desk and saw a torn notebook with the torno words '...-erty of kevin onoj-... "ehen that reminds me...i was with the counselor few minutes ago, he asked for one agent Kevin Ono...Jack.. something to see him immediately...I can't remember the name.again but please if you can spread the word, thank you" The agent who had began fidgeting at the mention of the counselor paled visibly when he heard his name. "What's the reason what does he want?" he asked. "How will I know? I'm just the messenger." Bigelow replied and stepped out of the box. He counted up to ten and was on seven when the agent hurried out of his cube in search of the counselor. Bigelow glanced hastily around and slipped into the vacated office. The computer was still on and the 3d waterfall wall paper continued its steady flow. He brought out the flash drive hurriedly and tried to steady his erratic pulse which made him have shaky hands. :::::::::::::: When Tonye returned to the hospital, it was already Past two in the afternoon. She saw no sign of the detective as she scanned the hallway, there was no uniformed officer also. She entered the room and found Rex awake struggling to sit up. "Take it easy, take it easy..." she helped him rest his back on the head board. "I have to go" he whispered weakly "I know...its alright..." she patted him gently watching her husband who was still fast asleep. She couldn't help but worry. When the doctor entered the ward he looked suprised to see Tonye perched on the edge of the bed soothing Rex with reassuring words. "The detective left her card for you" The doctor said after clearing his throat. "She said when the patients wake you should let her know" he handed a designed complimentary card and Tonye took it and studied it. She put it in the inner pocket of her jacket. "So doc, how long are they going to be admitted and how long before they can....you know, work and jump and do physical stuffs?" "It is imperative that they rest a great deal... Well a fractured rib normarlly takes about four to six weeks to heal naturally...so I'd advice them to stay at least for the week" "No way!" Rex managed to summon a little energy in his voice this time around. "Sir its not advisable to do anything that would overstress your chest or breathing..the ribs heal very fast but you need to play your part" the doctor said placatingly. "Bullshit" Rex glanced at Tonye "what's the time?" "Its 2 o'clock" "Oh Lord...I've missed my flight..." there was breathtaking panic in his eyes when he looked at her "Tonye there has to be atleast one more flight to Benue today...help me book it...please" She nodded, although she didn't believe he'd make the flight, not in the state He was in. Still She'd put Kirsten on the job immediately. "Mr Rex, I implore you to relax your mind free your being from stress so you can heal properly" the doctor adviced. "Doctor...just give me some painkillers and a body bandage to keep my torso steady" Rex said stubbornly. Tonye slipped out of the room second guessing the decision to book the flight. Was it really wise, Rex was in no state to go running from state to state. She put her hands in her jacket pockets and hunched her shoulders deep in thought. She felt something in her right pocket and she pulled out the detective's card. She studied it for some minutes then finally made up her mind and dialed the number. "hello" "hello detective....I got your card from the doctor" "oh...thanks for calling, is he awake?" "yes..any progress in finding out who is behind this?" "well Rex received a message giving him directions to an adress in Benue and the time 4pm" "Benue?" Tonye gasped "Yes...." "His family is in Benue...his daughter was kidnapped in Benue just last night!" "I have a response squad that operates in the middle belt. I can reach out to them and immediately they'd be in Benue by that time" Dagnet said confidently "but we don't still have a full grasp of what is going on...that would be going in blind" Tonye disagreed. "So what do you propose? bare in mind that a little girl's life is at risk" How could she forget? The little girl in question was her god daughter."Let me talk to Rex first...there's a reason the message entered his phone and not anybody else....if it comes to it I would go for the meeting myself I have flight tickets already." She could feel the detecive shaking her head over the phone. "I disagree with that, this is a police case and we don't go around endagering the lives of innocent civilians....because when it comes down to it, you guys are just civilians....hello, hello! hello..!" No reply just the dial tone. ::::: Tonye pressed the phone to her chest and stared into space before she brought herself back and called Kirsten. "hello ma" "Kirsten I need you to help me book a flight to Benue today, if possible before 4" "Okay ma.....just one?" She considered it for a moment "no...book two seats" She entered the room with the intention of telling Rex what she had just found out but he was fast asleep. :::::::::::: The name was quite unique. Not so much unique as strange... Christie Savannah Noel, doctor in training. Short Sam got several hits when he started his digging but after a while he began to sense the name was fake because the females that atleast had two of the names were definitely of caucasian race or was someone totally opposite from a doctor. He sighed and hit keystrokes expertly. He would have to check the database of the teaching hospital and scrutinize all their medicine students one by one. If she was truly a student he would get her. He stretched back in his chair and put the bowl in his lap enjoying the way the pieces of ice block floated with the groundnut inside his bowl of garri. There was nothing better than drinking cold garri on a hot afternoon at least according to Short Sam. One of the numerous systems on the table beeped and he rolled his chair forward immediately. He dropped his plate excitedly and began tapping keys on the keyboard. The flash was in, plugged in this very minute! That was half the battle already..he just needed his program duplicated on the local drive and he'd find his way to the very top of the hierarchy. "Come on, come on, come on..." he rubbed his palms in anticipation. :::::::::::::: Bigelow narrowed his eyes as he glared intently at the screen. He scrolled through the options and selected the 'paste' option. A window came up immediately showing the status of the transfer. The program was large, almost 1 gigabyte and the progress was slow. Bigelow heard hurried steps getting closer and moved away from the computer just in time. Agent Kevin rushed into his tight office looking flushed. "Hey agent...the counselor wants to see you...now!" He said with a wicked smile. "Is this some kind of sick joke?" Bigelow asked "Not the kind of sick joke you played on me if that's what you're asking, but you have some explaining to do to him" Bigelow glanced past the agent at the monitor. The speed had picked up and it was now halfway through. The agent made to turn and face the system but Bigelow shouted "Wait!" Causing the man to freeze in shock. "I'm sorry for the joke...i thought it was funny...I'm sorry....but seriously does the counselor want to see me?" he asked as snow as possible. "Yes of course...he even said immediately" "Hope he's in his office shaa ...you don't have to follow me, i'd go by myself...I won't leave the building....I won't run out without seeing the counselor first..so please no need to escort me...I'd go on my own...straight to the counselor" The reverse psychology didn't work because the agent looked at him without expression "I didn't offer to follow you before. If you like try and leave you're on your own...me I've done my part and passed the message " The time left was about 2 minutes and 45 seconds on the monitor and agent Kevin turned to sit down in front of the computer but Bigelow grabbed him by the shoulders and prevented him from sitting. "I thought we agents always had our backs men...this is betrayal men!" "Ah Ah....What are you talking about? let go of me agent!!" The young man protested but instead Bigelow began to shake him roughly. "Heey....help! He's gone maad!!!!" Agent Kevin Onoj....shouted at the top of his lungs and one of the agents was curious enough to leave his matchbox sized office and poke his head through the doorway. "What's going on? Bigelow's eyes were transfixed on the monitor. Ten seconds left. "This agent started harassing me because I delivered the message that the counselor wants to see him..and he was the one to send me on a wild goose chase in the first place...played a stupid prank on me." 4, 3, 2, 1,........done! Bigelow released him suddenly "I'm very very sorry...i've been really stressed lately..I think i'd take a break for a while...once more I'm sorry" with that he was gone. He headed straight for the staircase. Bulky seemed to be waiting for him, his hands were folded and he stood straight, towering over Bigelow. However he didn't open the gate and let him through like he normally did instead he said "follow me..." yet he remained on the spot then flicked the wrist of his outstretched hand in a 'after you' gesture. "Ladies first" Bigelow had no choice but to comply. The usually quiet Bulky had a dirty gleam in his eyes and as Bigelow hesitantly walked farther away from the exit he began to fear the worst. :::::::::::::::::::::::::: Clyde had been pacing round the house for the past 30 minutes. Rex should have arrived since 3 hours ago. He tried to reach his number and Bami's line but there was no reply or it was unreachable as usual. The family was still asleep. Although he had noticed some kind of restlessness in their movement the past few hours. More tossing and kicking...the slumber wasn't as deep as before. He walked round the house, entering every room and observing the sleeping occupants. Maybe Rex had gone straight to the hospital...to check on Olivia? That sounded like something he could do. The more he thought about it, the more he was convinced until he was almost certain Rex was at Olivia's bed side in the hospital that very moment. He decided to call Buzz. He was on sentry duty at the hospital, tasked with her protection. "Hello , Buzz here" "Buzz its Clyde" "Oh... what's up man" "Is Rex over there in the hospital?" "Rex? no...Its just me and Olivia...no body from BROTA here yet" "Hmmmm....." "Why do you ask?...i thought he'd be in the house with you by now" "Me too....but he hasn't come yet" "Really? Have you tried calling him?" "That's what I'm still trying to do.. "Okay...let me try from this end too...maybe I can get Bami or Andy" Buzz said and cut the call. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::: She polished the metallic barrel of the semiautomatic weapon. The Uzi was a very effective gun in the hand of an expert. It was a portable rifle in her opinion, a kalishnov without the excess weight and ridiculously shaped banana clips but the same effect and a better aim. She hooked the sling round her shoulder and let the gun dangle on her side. Next she polished her side arm a beretta pistol, checked the bullets then chambered a round so she had one on the ready then she switched the safety on. The ice cream tune went off again and she grabbed the phone immediately. "What is it...any developments?" "I just received a call now....it seems Rex hasn't arrived yet" "What! How is that possible?" she was buffet "I honestly don't know...but he's not at home or in the hospital....maybe his flight got delayed" "I've already sent him a message" "Then let me suggest you ignore it...don't go...at least not until we understand things better" She was silent. She didn't believe Rex would be so stupid to try anything funny. She had thought with his daughter on the line he would stop his usual cowboy theatrics but he was still playing games. Her eyes darkened as she thought of innovative ways to make him suffer. :::::::::::::::: After Buzz the betrayer ended his call, he slouched his posture and wore a worried demeanor on his face, like a worried husband. He continued pacing down the hallway outside the room Olivia was recuperating. The doctor came outside and was suprised to see him. He seemed to take pity on the worried husband because he said "she's awake now.....you can spend few minutes with her and see her briefly" He was already shaking his head. "You know what doctor, I'm not in a very strong place emotionally...I'd like to hold off seeing her for a while" The doctor looked like he couldn't understand but he nodded. :::::: Olivia wondered why Rex didn't come see her. She needed to see his face, to know that the nightmare was over, to know that their daughter was going to be safe. The doctor said her husband was outside....'worried sick' as he had put it but why didn't he want to see her? maybe something was wrong with her....something the doctor wasn't telling her...something Rex couldn't face....her eyes became moist as she remembered what the lady said earlier about reuniting her with her wheelchair and the tears rolled down her cheeks as she remembered the intense pain that had followed in both knees. ::::::::::::: "Bingo! he did it....Tonye I don't know who your inside man is but he has balls!!" Short Sam shouted into the receiver the moment Tonye picked the call. "So you're in?" she asked excitedly "damn right I'm in..." "So who is it...what did you find out?" "woa, calm down....relax....poka a' poka okay....little by little, when I know anything you would know it too. S.s out!" |
