Politics / Derivation And Deprivation: Why The North Is Poor by southwark: 10:48pm On Mar 05, 2012
Derivation and deprivation: Why the North is poor

ACCORDING to official figures, the leading oil producing state, Rivers, received N1,053 billion between 1999 and 2008 in federal allocations. By contrast the North-eastern states of Yobe and Borno, where the Boko Haram sect was created, received N175bn and N213bn respectively. Broken down on a per capita basis, the contrast is even starker. In 2008 the 18.97m people who lived in the six states in the north-east received on average N1,156 per person.

“By contrast Rivers State was allocated N3,965 per capita, and on average the oil producing South-South region received on average N3,332 per capita. This imbalance is compounded when the cost of an amnesty programme for militants in the delta is included together with an additional 1 per cent for a special development body for the Niger Delta. To boot, the theft of oil by profiteers in the region diverts tens of millions more weekly from federal coffers. – Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

YES, forget these per capita figures! I agree the North is poor. Yes, I agree the poverty has bred millions of destitutes, who have become instant and easy recruits for Boko Haram. But my question is: Who impoverished the North?

A caveat: I am an unabashed capitalist who believes that every citizen has a right to do good business and make profit. I salute hard work and do not disparage honest efforts. However, uncompassionate capitalism driven by pulleys of aristocracy breeds a brutal class order worthy of condemnation.

In my last article titled – ‘El Rrufai’s amnesia: The day Boko Haram Wore Jeans’, I categorically stated that greed and the senseless chase for power by the Fulani aristocrats and political elite of the North are responsible for the extreme poverty of the North. I still and will always stand by that. My position did not go down well with my targets; they responded vituperatively.

Mallam Sanusi’s statistics was intended to mislead us by ruffling the rudder of our common sense. See, Ekiti state has a 2012 budget 0f N88 billion; Kwara State, N90 billion; Cross River State, N144 billion; Anambra State, N82 billion; Enugu State, N74 billion. Now let’s look at the 2012 budgets recently passed into law by the four major Boko Haram occupied states – Kano State has a budget of N 210 billion; Borno State, 150 billion; Gombe, N94 billion; Yobe State, 80 billion.

A simple comparative analysis shows that Ekiti State has about the same revenue as Yobe and Gombe, but only 17 students passed WAEC and NECO in Gombe state last year, while Ekiti is known for its high literacy level. Gombe State has a bigger budget that Enugu and Anambra, why has MASSOB not bombed anyone.

Borno State has a budget twice that of Enugu State but the poverty and unemployment level in Borno State is more than thrice that of Enugu State. Borno has a bigger budget than a Niger Delta state – Cross River. While the leaders of Cross River over the last decade have transformed it into the nation’s leading tourist destination; those of Borno have transformed it into a Somalia.

Kano State gets the highest statutory allocation from the Federal Government, because on paper Kano is the most populated state in Nigeria, yet Kano has about 1.6 million destitute Almajiris. Kano has a budget almost thrice the budget of Enugu, twice the budget of Kwara, Anambra and Ekiti, but how come almost 90 per cent of students in Kano fail WAEC? How come the poverty level in Kano is higher than all these states put together? Why is the North so poor? From the figures above I have shown that Southern states with lesser budgets have shown better development performance than most North Eastern states with bigger statutory allocation and budgets.

Politics / The Au And The Tragedy Of New Headquarters. What A Shame. by southwark: 9:22am On Jan 28, 2012
On the 28th of January, 2012 African countries will collectively descend to a new low on the global index of state sovereignty, territorial integrity and actual independence of nations. On that day, Chinese President Hu Jintao will be in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to commission the new $124 Million African Union Headquarters built and donated to the continent by China.  Termed “China’s gift to Africa”, the edifice was constructed by the China State Construction Engineering Corporation with over 90% Chinese labor.

It is to the discredit of the African Union and therefore, every individual and country within that regional body that in 2012, a building as symbolic as the African Union Headquarters is designed, built and maintained by a foreign country, it does not matter which country.

The ancient and modern history of donation of buildings and structures from one nation to another is filled with intrigues and subterfuges, conquests, diplomatic schemings, espionage and counter espionage, economic manipulations, political statements and dominations. The construction of the Trojan horse by Odysseus and its ‘donation’ resulted in the Greek conquest of the ancient city of Troy after 10 years of unending skirmish.

In building the Basilica in Rome – termed the “greatest of all churches of Christendom,” contributions from faithfuls were emphasized rather than donations from friendly nations. Even the gift of the Liberty Statue from France to the United States on occasion of the latter’s independence was a joint effort, whereby over 120,000 Americans led by Joseph Pulitzer contributed funds for the construction of the pedestal in 1885.

In rare glimpse into the matter,  the book Architecture of Diplomacy, Jane C. Loeffler reveals the underlying diplomatic maneuverings and political ramifications that defines the construction of American embassies all over the world .  The author states that building an embassy requires “as much diplomacy as design.” Loeffler enumerates factors seriously considered in the construction of an American embassy building and they include “World politics, American agendas, Architectural politics, cultural considerations, security” and several others.

Common sense dictates that in an era of increasing exploitation of Africa’s natural resources by foreign powers including  China, that the African Union, rather than the apparent submission signified by acceptance of the construction of its headquarters  by China, will be an organization advocating for fairness in the relationship that exists  between the continent and the global powers.

Should security considerations be included, then the question arises as to how African heads of state and government could hold confidential meetings in a building they have no idea how it was wired. What guarantee do African governments have that every word uttered in the new headquarters in Addis Ababa is not heard in Beijing? What evidence negates the suspicion that all activities in the just completed building  are not replayed on a large screen in Beijing as Chinese secret service agents watch?

Culturally, indigenous Bantu culture abhors dependence on others for sustenance. A favorite Swahili proverb of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere’s is “Mgeni siku mbili; siku ya tatu mpe jembe” which means “treat your guest as a guest for two days; on the third day give him a hoe.”  Indigenous African tradition largely abhors dependency of any kind. It is frowned upon for a man not to thatch his rooftops well before the rainy season, or to stay back while others are going to the farm, except he is bedridden. Add this to the  logic espoused in Archtitecture of Diplomacy, and one reasonably concludes that  it is unacceptable for Africans to accept a building from China that will house what should be the landmark of the continent’s achievements and its aspirations for the future.

Clearly, much indiscretion was exercised by the African Union officials in the acceptance of the offer of a new headquarters from China. The African Union has since deviated from the ideals of its founding fathers when in the 1960s Kwame Nkrumah and other great African leaders sought to establish an organization that would protect the geographical contiguity and territorial integrity of African nations. Emperor Haile Selassie in his historic 1963 speech stated clearly that the Organization was founded because “Africa has been reborn as a free continent and Africans have been reborn as free men. The blood that was shed and sufferings that were endured are today Africa’s advocates for freedom and unity.”

Contrary to his predecessor’s commitment to the continued freedom of the continent from imperial forces,  Ethiopian President  Meles Zenawi  - currently being accused of selling huge swathes of Ethiopian land to foreign countries – on a tour of the facility boasted of how he single handedly lobbied Chinese officials to build the new headquarters and how he exempted taxes on all Chinese imported construction materials.

Gleeful at the opportunity for African heads of state to indulge in their lifestyles of conspicuous consumption during meetings and summits, AU Projects Director Fantahun Hailemikael reports that among the several luxuries of the building is a “helicopter landing pad so visiting dignitaries will be flown from the airport.” Of course the dignitaries will be spared the sight of the slum that much of Addis  Ababa is. They will be flown from the airport to the AU building and from there to Sheraton Addis, reportedly the best of its kind around the world.

While the African Union think it has gained from China by moving into its new ultra-modern facility, the reality is that the continent has lost tremendously in all matters worthy of reasonable consideration. The move to reverse the derogatory perception of Africa and Africans by all non-Africans has suffered another major setback.  The resultant effect will be the continued political and economic manipulation and domination of the region by the West, and now China, and soon the rest of the non-African world.

Boko Haram: Purge Your Government Off Boko Haram Sympathizers Southern Leaders Urge Jonathan

Eminent leaders of thought from the South-South and South-West regions of the country have tasked President Goodluck Jonathan to weed out people of dubious loyalty from his government and the security forces in the nation.

The leaders spoke against the background of the threat posed to national unity by the activities of members of the terrorist Boko Haram group and President Jonathan’s declaration that members of the sect had infiltrated government and the security agencies.

They spoke in unison during the maiden meeting of the leaders and elders of the two regions held at the Efunyela Hall in Ikenne Remo, Ogun State home of Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

The meeting started at about 12p.m. and went into a closed-door session from which it rose at about 4p.m, with the delegates emerging from the venue in an atmosphere of camaraderie characterised by back-slapping, hugging and throwing of banters.

Expectedly, the prevailing issues in the polity dominated discussions in the four-hour cross-fertilisation of ideas on how the ship of state would not founder and national cohesion endangered.

A communiqué entitled: “Strengthening the Unity of Nigeria issued at the end of the jaw-jaw and jointly signed by the leader of the South-South delegates, Chief Edwin Clark, and his counterpart form the South-West, Bishop Bolanle Gbonigi, reads as follows:

“The meeting was convened at the instance of the South-South leaders with a view to thanking the Yoruba people for their support towards the victory of President Jonathan at the last elections and to strengthen bridges of cooperation and to expand this bridge-building to other geopolitical zones of the country.

“The meeting condemned very strongly the terrorist activities of the Boko Haram sect, the increasing associated loss of innocent lives especially of Christians and Southerners and the threat the sect poses to the unity of our nation by its ultimatum to non-Northerners to leave the North.

“That the dastardly act of multiple bomb blasts carried out in Kano on Friday, 20th January, 2012 by the Boko Haram sect which claimed several innocent lives and property is totally condemned without equivocation and in the strongest term possible.

“In respect of the Boko Haram threat to national security, the meeting further urged the President not to hesitate to rid his government and the nation’s security forces of all persons of dubious loyalty and to treat the activities of the sect as treason and apply the relevant laws on the culprits and their sponsors,”

The leaders also reiterated the convocation of a national conference to address issues militating against the corporate existence of the country and as well produce a truly federal constitution that will guarantee a unified country.

On the deployment of soldiers in Lagos State, which has become a political football of some sort, and similar troops deployment in others cities and states of the federation, the meeting affirmed the sacrosanct nature of State Authority in dealing with security matters.

However, the meeting urged President Jonathan to review the deployment of military personnel in all affected areas in the country and where the circumstances so permit, direct the withdrawal of the soldiers from the streets to reduce tension and apprehension.

The meeting also urged the president to firmly prosecute the war against corruption without fear or favour so as to sanitise the country for sustainable growth and development of the economy.

“To this end, the meeting calls on all Nigerians not only to give maximum support and encouragement to the current efforts of President Jonathan in probing the activities of the fuel subsidy but also, to urge him to sanitise the entire oil and gas industry that has always created overnight briefcase billionaires at the expense of the masses,” the communiqué added.

It enjoined the president to commence steps at reducing the cost and size of governance branches of government.

The next meeting of the leaders will be held in the South-South region in April. A 10-member delegation from each of the zones was constituted and mandated to deliver the communiqué to the president.

In attendance at the meeting were Chief Edwin Clark; Senator Felix Ibru; the Obong of Calabar, His Royal Majesty, Dandeson Douglas; a former Petroleum Minister and Amanyanabo of Nembe, Dr Edmund Daukorie; Professor Saleba Mukoro; the Orodje of Okpe, His Royal Majesty Major-General Felix Mujakperuo (retd) a former Inspector General of Police, Sir Mike Okiro; Rear Admiral F.B.I Porbeni; Honourable Tunde Akogun; Dr B.K Adasen; Brigadier-General S. E Oviawe; Senator Bassey Ewa Henshaw; Chief Ayakene E. Whisky; Dr Emmanuel Efezuma;

Others include the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade as well as many royal fathers from the South West zone; Chief Ayo Adebanjo; Chief Gbenga Daniel; Sir Olaniwun Ajayi; Chief Reuben Fasoranti; Chief G.O.K Ajayi; Chief Olu Falae; Lieutenant General Oladipo Diya; Professor Oladapo Afolabi; Professor (Mrs) Adenike Grange; Cjief Akin Omojola; Senator Tony Adefuye; Senator Femi Okurounmu; Chief Dipi Jimilehin.

Also present were Professor Tunde Adeniran; Chief Shuaib Oyedokun; Chief Supo Shonibare; Chief Gani Adams; Rear Admiral Akin Aduwo; Professor Moibi Opeloye; Rear Admiral Femi Olumide; Senator Koforola Bucknor-Akerele; Dr Yemi Farounbi; Chief Oladosu Oladipo; Chief Pekun Awobona; Dr Kunle Olajide; Dr Olatokunbo Awolowo-Dosumu; Chief Abiola Ogundokun; Chief Ebenezer Babatope; Princess Bibi Sangodoyin and many others.

Family / Good,well-mannered Women Make Home While Bad Ones Destroy It. by southwark: 6:40pm On Oct 18, 2011
@all,I m not sorry to say that she deserved whatever  she got while the relationship lasted. I only condemned men who re violent towards their gentle,well-mannered,respectful and humble wives/girlfriends. It is ridiculous and hypocritical seeing or hearing women, few men condemning Sammy Okposo despite the fact that they have not hear or read his own side of story and this's the main reason why this barbaric behaviour continue to rear its ugly head every day.

@all,some(many) women re terrible, devilish and dangerous but will quickly rush to the public to say they ve been abused in their relationships so as to gain public's support and sympathy. I ve never and i will never abuse any woaman in mylife but that does not stop me from advocating for some men who re living the rest of their life in psychiatry homes as a result of women's action and nobody seems to talk abt dat.

Pls,take a trip to Homerton pshychiatry hospital or mosley in UK and see where men destinies re being wasted at every passing second and 90% was as a result of vulnerable women's action, what a funny world.

What do you want a man who just found out all his three children belongs to another man and these guys re of 20,18 and 15 years of age to do? the man in question cries every day. Women re indeed vulnerable.

What is the fate of a man who has been paying his mortgage singlehandedly for the past 15years,only for the wife to set him up as a violent man and the man was asked by policemen to go and look for a place to stay while the case is being dealt with? Women re indeed vulnerable.

Having said all that,i think i must not fail to say we have some lovely, good and well-mannered women in our society and they all deserve to be appreciated. I ve always said to anybody that care to listen that only good women re happily married but d bad women ll always run out to condemn their husband or accused their husband of violence.

Secret papers reveal Biafra intrigue

New revelations about how the war was funded

By Rick Fountain in London
Newly-released secret British papers show how the Biafran civil war which nearly destroyed the Nigerian federal state 30 years ago, turned into a triangular big-power contest between the United Kingdom, France and the Soviet Union.

About a million Biafrans starved to death because of the blockade applied by the Nigerian federal military government.

The breakaway state of Biafra was declared in May 1967, by the Ibo people of eastern Nigeria.

They were at odds with the rest of the federation and their military governor, Colonel Ojukwu, thought they could survive with revenues from the oilfields in their territory.

But the move was opposed by the federal military government and fighting broke out.

At first Biafra was successful and this alarmed Britain, the former colonial power, anxious for its big oil holdings.

It also interested the Soviet Union which saw a chance to increase its influence in West Africa.

Both sent arms to boost the federal military government, under General Yakubu Gowon.

But France, the other big former colonial power in the region, also took a hand.

Arms from Francophone neighbours

Although Paris repeatedly denied arming the Biafrans, the newly-released papers reveal intelligence reports showing that very large weapon shipments were reaching Biafra via two neighbouring Francophone states, Ivory Coast and Gabon.

The UK intelligence services warned that Soviet penetration was growing but that this did not much trouble Paris.

The British reports says the French objective "appears to be the break-up of Nigeria, which threatens, by its size and potential, to overshadow France's client Francophone states in west Africa".

But the flow of French arms diminished as the Biafrans wilted under relentless attacks and a food blockade.

In January 1970 the secession collapsed, and Colonel Ojukwu fled to Ivory Coast.
