BusinessTop Reasons Why Businesses Fail by Spazwik(op): 1:37pm On Aug 18, 2017
According to the 2015 report of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), Nigeria leads the world in the proportion of the population who believe they have the skills to run a business, with almost 90 percent of Nigerian adults believing they have the ability to become entrepreneurs. The result of the survey reveals that out of every 100 Nigerian adults, 35 are involved in some sort of entrepreneurial activity.

In a 2016 mid-year World Bank index on the ease of doing business, Nigeria was ranked 169 among 190 countries.

This data proves that running a business is a tough venture in Nigeria. In the words of the President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Deacon Titus Soetan, “Doing business in Nigeria is not a tea party”. Despite this, thousands of entrepreneurs and business-minded people still choose to start their own businesses.

Starting a business might appear as an attractive option, but it can fail as much as succeed. Some entrepreneurs succeed in their quest; others fall out in the race to build their business empires as a result of certain factors that are beyond their control or have been overlooked in the course of running the business.

Here are the top reasons why many businesses have started and exited almost immediately:

Starting a business for the wrong reason

According to Mark Sephton, a public speaker and personal mentor to entrepreneurs, “you can always tell what drives a business by the story it tells.”

What is your reason for going into a business? Some entrepreneurs go into business thinking it’s the best way to make a lot of money. Some others simply want to be their own bosses, so they see starting a business as the best option. And a few believe they’re good at something, so they decide to transform it into a business.

Creating a successful business goes beyond holding on to some reasons that remains in the mindset. It requires passion for the service you want to provide, discipline and a drive to change people’s lives.

Lack of market differentiation

This contribute greatly to the extinction of businesses. Business owners push already existing products/services into the market, without a unique selling point differentiating them from competitors. With this, the presence of the product/service is not felt, leading to little or no patronage.

It’s important to identify what makes your business different from all others.

Little or lack of experience

This can also have an adverse effect on the business’ performance and survival. When a business owner fails to make concrete plans, doesn’t understand the field of business he’s running, has no idea what it means to manage people, or cannot convince investors, such business is bound to fail in the long run.

Every business owner requires motivational, entrepreneurial and business skills to keep their business sailing. If you’re inexperienced in the field you’re going into, then it’s best to bring people who have experience. In areas where you’re lacking, they’ll be able to fill up the gap.

Doing it all alone

This has also brought a lot of entrepreneurs to crashing point. It’s okay to start out your business alone if you can, but there’s a limit to what an individual can achieve alone.

At one point in a business, the need for teamwork arises. Seeking the opinion of others, knowledge/idea sharing is important for every business’ success. Great things are seldom achieved alone.

Poor or inadequate market research

It’s easy to get carried away with a business idea and set up a business without testing its viability, but poor or inadequate research of a business idea and industry can limit the business’ success.

With proper planning and research, you have accurate data that’ll prevent over-optimistic forecasts, test if your business idea is viable and whether your pricing is not only competitive, but also provides an adequate return.

Research into various factors surrounding an industry, including market saturation, the potential profits, set up cost and required marketing efforts. Failure to have adequate knowledge of an industry might lead to failure within the first few years of kick-off.

Inadequate operational capital

This is s one of the major factors that contribute to business failures. According to GeoPoll survey business owners identified financing as one of the biggest challenges.

It’s normal for business owners to have high expectations for their businesses. But in many cases, this makes them invest a large amount of their capital too quickly. To grow a business with your available capital, start small and focus on a segment of your target audience. This would create a niche market for you, which would grow and enable you expand to other segments.Top Reasons Why Businesses Fail

FoodHow To Prepare Nigerian Eba by Spazwik(op): 12:50pm On Aug 18, 2017
Funny though but the little things we overlook might be an issue to someone else grin, So I want to play with this

Utensils Needed

Pot
Baton
Bowl
Ingredients Needed

Garri
Water
Method

1. Boil water in a pot to a temperature of about 90 degree celsius

2. Pour this water into a bowl and spread garri evenly to the water

3. Cover the bowl for about 3 minutes to allow the garri to soften and swell

4. Turn the content of the bowl with a baton to mix properly. Add more hot water if its too hard; adding more hot water will make it softer, so add according to your taste. You can also add more garri if the "Eba" is too soft to make it harder

5. Serve the "Eba" with any soup of your choice

BusinessSEO Tips For Your Business Website by Spazwik(op): 5:25pm On Aug 17, 2017
As a business owner, you’ve probably set up your website to let the world know you’re authentic and a real company. And like many entrepreneurs do, you’ve made the mistake of opening your website and just walking away, allowing it run all by itself.

A website is important to every business no mater the industry. It can help push sales and patronage if used well.

Here are 10 SEO tips to help make your website work for you and aid business growth:
1. Do Your Keyword Research

Before you can start implementing keywords into your copy, you have to know what keywords people are searching for in relation to your product or service. One of the easiest ways to do this is through Google AdWords.

The application has a function that will tell you how often a specific keyword is searched for, where it is being searched from, and related keywords or phrases. The tool is invaluable, and should be used at the beginning of every new SEO campaign.

2. Know Where to Place Your Keywords in an Article

You now have a bank of non-competitive, natural sounding keywords, and the goal of putting 1-4 of them per 100 words into your written copy. Choosing where to put them in that copy is important.

Generally, you want a keyword in the title of your article or blogpost, at least one in a subtitle or bulleted list within the article, and the rest spread throughout the article naturally. This will show the search engine algorithms that your content is highly relevant to the keyword because it’s not only the subject of your copy, but it’s referenced throughout.

3. Don’t Over-do it

Now that you’ve got all of those shiny keywords at your fingertips, you may be tempted to stuff your site with as many high-value keywords as possible. This is a really bad idea!

Search engines penalize websites for keyword stuffing. Instead, your focus keyword should be 2.5 percent or less of the copy. Sprinkle in synonyms for your focus keyword. Search engines are smart and will recognize and value synonym keywords.

4. Write Engaging Content

This is an important concept and one that’s easier to understand when you think of it like this – SEO is the bait in the water that attracts the fish, but when they get to your website (or take the bait), they need to be hooked in order for you to catch that fish. If you write engaging content that’s designed to inform your reader and get them excited about your product or service, they’ll be hooked, and you can start to reel them in.

This means don’t simply write a boring article that lists a bunch of information about your stylish fashion outfit, that makes visiting it sound no more thrilling than a trip to the dentist.

Business7 Things You’ll Never Hear A Successful Person Say by Spazwik(op): 5:04pm On Aug 04, 2017
At one time or another, everyone (entrepreneur or not), has felt beaten down and frustrated by the demands, changing focus, and perceived injustices everywhere. This is natural, and not at all uncommon.

However, real successful people do not let themselves complain how bad things are, why things are not fair, how terrible everything is, and how much better things are someplace else. They never avoid discomfort or pain. They learn to convert them into an even stronger foundation for new accomplishments.

In this article by Andrew Thomas, Founder of Skybell Video Doorbell, you can enjoy the same kind of success by making a similar commitment. Here’s a list of things that you’ll never hear from a great entrepreneur.

1. I can’t do it

Sometimes we feel we lack the knowledge, expertise or resources we need to succeed. Though it’s tempting to give into this feeling, the best founders reject it. They push aside self-doubt and focus on what they want to create.

Build the muscle of belief and start saying, “I can,” even when you feel like you can’t. Over time, you’ll learn to believe that you can do anything you set your mind to. If you need proof, make a list of all the things you’ve mastered since childhood. I’ll bet your life is full of evidence that you can overcome any challenge.

2. I don’t know how

Everything you’ve ever done, you had to learn to do, including walking, driving and starting a business. Learning is a lifelong process. No entrepreneur has all the answers at the start.

When we started SkyBell, we didn’t know how to make a video doorbell, and neither did anyone else. If we didn’t go for it anyway, despite a lack of knowledge, the company wouldn’t exist.

Instead of saying, “I don’t know how,” consider the mantra that has helped me: “Figure it out.” Life is simply the continual process of figuring it out.

3. I don’t have enough time

Successful founders don’t have time, they make it, especially for things that are truly important. Exchange the phrase, “I don’t have time,” for “I need to make time.”

If you need to free up some time, consider hiring someone to help manage your workload. I have a virtual assistant who manages my schedule and performs other tasks that are easy to delegate. This saves me valuable hours every week.

Of course, this is not all. Go to http://www.dailydigest.ng/7-things-youll-never-hear-successful-person-say/ for more

https://www.dailydigest.ng/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/sausageandbeans.jpeg

For those days when you have so much tidying up to do, this meal will save you. You can cook this in a stockpot for about 3 hours if you don't have a slow cooker. This 7 ingredients meal is so comforting, delicious and goes perfectly well with bread.

Method

1. You will have to slice the sausages and also chop the onions and pepper. Wash the beans and set aside.
2. In a large saucepan, cook the sausage over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes or until lightly brown while stirring occasionally. Add the onions and green pepper before the sausage gets completely browned and cook until tender. Season with salt and pepper as you desire.
3. Combine the crushed tomatoes, sausage-vegetable mixture, beans and water in a slow cooker. Cover and cook on high for about 4 hours or low for about 8 hours. You can adjust the water and cook time depending on the consistency and texture you want.
4. Enjoy!

BusinessThe Side Business That Can Make You N50,000 – N100,000 Per Week by Spazwik(op): 5:02pm On Jul 18, 2017
If you’ve been running your business for a while, and have drawn up a conclusion that Nigeria is not a friendly place to run a business, then you’re not doing it right, or you probably have a business type that has no potential of earning as much you’re expecting.

There are tons of profitable businesses in Nigeria, and many people are already cashing in on them, raking in thousands of naira weekly. If you’re want to join the train, here are a few of the most profitable businesses in Nigeria, that can earn you N50000 – N100000 weekly.

Web Designing

Yes, you heard that right. Businesses are springing up daily looking for web developers that would help give them an online presence. Guess what, this doesn’t come cheap. Website designers/developers in Nigeria charge an average of N50,000 to design a website.

So, if they get at least N50,000 for a job, you should know they’ll be earning a lot at the end of the month. If you have this skill, then your business is set, and you really won’t be needing capital to begin, except you want to carry promotions to get words out about your service.

Photography

This is currently trending in Nigeria, as everyone is turning into a photographer. Photography has become highly profitable and a really attractive business, unlike in the past when photographers were not held in high-esteem and seen as low income earners.

All through the week, Mondays to Sundays, events happen all over the country. For photographers who have gone up the ladder – the like of TY Bello and Kelechi Amadi, they earn millions of Naira weekly from their businesses. For starters, they earn an average of N100,000 from just a single event.

If you have this skill, it’s time you get words out and ‘scream’ on social media that you offer photography service. Instagram also makes this easier – tell your clients to give you a mention each time they upload those pictures.

Event Planning

This is one of the best sellers. Just like photography, you can get clients every single day, and you would even need to employ more hands in no time. It’ll interest you to also know that event planners who are rookies in the business charge nothing less than N100,000 for a single event. Yes, really!

From weddings, to corporate events, the bridal showers and several others, the event planning industry in Nigeria is really wide. You can decide to choose a niche, or grab it all. It’s up to you. You can also expand your offering by providing vendor services you know your client would need – photography, ushering, catering, and others. This would further increase the fee you’re charging.

InvestmentCheat Sheet: Organisations That Can Fund Your Businesses by Spazwik(op): 4:55pm On Jul 18, 2017
While getting fund for that business idea might not sound quite as easy as, say, debating the effect of economic policies on small businesses, it’s still top priority for the overwhelming majority of Africans who have decided to go the entrepreneurial route, with about 80% percent listing it as their number one concern.

With that in mind, and because this topic can get convoluted real fast, we’re breaking down the places you absolutely need to know about to get business grants—whether as a small business, NGO, women, or social enterprise.

The 10,000 start-ups and young businesses selected from across Africa will ultimately create one million new jobs and add $10 billion in annual revenues to Africa’s economy.

2. Acumen Fund

Acumen is a charity oorganizationincorporated in 2001 with seed capital from the Rockefeller Foundation, Cisco Systems Foundation and three individual philanthropists.

The Acumen Fund invests in entrepreneurs who have the capability to bring sustainable solutions to big problems.

3. Seedstars Africa

HealthListen! Your Body Might Be Sending Vital Health Messages by Spazwik(op): 5:18pm On Jul 14, 2017
It’s always important to listen to your body. In every change in appearance or a function, there’s a message.

It’s not always up to you to decipher the message (that’s what the medical profession is for) but it is vital to acknowledge that the message is being sent.

Obviously the signs are different for every individual and taken alone might be completely normal, however, it’s always worth getting them checked out.

These are some signs good to know:

Grey hair in your 30s

It is natural to have gray hair in your 50s, but something may not be right if your hair is turning gray before you hit your 40s.

It could even be a sign of diabetes if 50% of your hair is already gray in color. This is more likely if diabetes runs in your family.

Before you start looking for a hair dye to cover your gray hair, it makes great sense to visit your doctor to rule out the possibility of having diabetes.

Loss of eyebrows

You will continue to lose eyebrow hairs as you grow old, but you should not ignore sudden hair loss. This could be due to hyperthyroidism, poor thyroid function or another thyroid problem.

All these issues can lead to hair loss.

Red palms

Your red palms may only be a sign of excessive labor, but it may also indicate other issues, including eczema and liver problems.

Some people end up having red palms because of an allergy to drugs, metal, foods or drinks.

Chapped lips

You will end up having chapped lips due to a change in wind or temperature.

If the problem persists, especially when you cannot associate with temperature changes, you may have other health conditions.

You may be zinc and vitamin B deficient if you notice your lip ends being cracked and you have inner sores as well. It could also be due to a fungal infection.

Swollen neck

It is always important to know what your neck says about your health.

Don’t overlook a swollen neck; It could be due to some serious underlying health condition.

You may have thyroid problems if the front part of your neck swells. This is more common in women from 20 to 50 years of age.

Nail Changes

Your nails can tell a lot about your health.

A change in color, shape, or even texture represents different types of underlying health conditions. Be sure to go see your doctor if you notice any sudden change to your nails

Cold feet

Your feet are the furthest body part from your heart, which means that you will experience cold feet with any cardiovascular problem.

Cold feet is a common symptom of an autoimmune issue called Reynaud’s disease in which the blood vessels in your toes, hands, ears, and nose tighten up a bit and feel pale and cold to touch.

Consulting

You can consult on basically anything and everything. Consulting doesn’t require any capital to kick-off. All you have to do is, think of a special skill or knowledge that you have and begin to make reasonable income from it.

Consulting can range from marriage counseling, to legal consulting, educational consulting, media consulting, real estate consulting and more.

Real Estate Agency

You do not require capital or professional qualification to find properties for prospective clients. To be successful in kicking-off your real estate agency, join groups in the real estate niche, get briefs form family and friends, and have the right information.

Then, advertise that you have listings available for houses, apartments, flats, rooms or offices. You can either charge a one-time fee for finding accommodations or work on a commission.

Laundry Services

Everyone has dirty clothes for laundry and ironing, but many working class and career individuals do not have the time to tend to their laundry themselves because of the busy schedule of work or business.

You can make money here by doing a professional laundry service, especially in areas where power supply is erratic. For efficiency, you can hire a few people to join in the laundry business.

Website Development

A number of small businesses do not have web presence. You can propose an interactive website to small businesses at a cheap rate and start building your client lists from there.

Website development requires little or no capital to start. To begin, you’ll need to have the skills and experience. There are a number of free courses online where you can learn a lot about website development.

Day Care

If you are one that naturally loves kids around, then you’ll find a day care business really appealing. There are working mothers who continue to seek a home-environment where their kids can be cared for while they are at work.

If you have an extra room in your house, then you can make good use of it. Talk to friends in the neighbourhood who might need child care services, with a simple handbills and short message advert you can get your business running and end up having a school of your own.

Graphic Design

The business of graphic design is growing rapidly, especially with the digital age and more people embracing the internet. People now pay attention to visually appealing graphics. You can design graphics to be used in various media, including – fliers, newsletters, magazines, information sheets, letters and advertisements.

Computer Training

If you’re computer literate with basic knowledge of simple computer applications like MS Suites, then you can kick-start your own computer training centre. It will amaze you there are still thousands of Nigerians who are computer illiterates.

In addition to teaching people how to use the computer, you can offer training on how to use the internet. Make the training as much fun as possible; people do not want to know all the details about what makes a computer work. When you take it bit by bit, they will stick to their paper and pencil forever. You can start this venture with a few fairly used computers, and then expand as you grow and make money from registration fees. Also, talk to people in your neighbourhood by printing an advert for the training you want to offer.

Wedding Planning

Weddings take place every weekend, and wedding planners in Nigeria are smiling to the bank. To get into this business, you will need to be up-to-date on wedding trends and fads, dress styles, colour trends and a whole lot. Offer your customers an ala carte menu of services, from helping pick flowers, the wedding gown and bridesmaid dresses to picking the venue and hiring the caterer.

Before you open your business, shop at all the wedding shops, and even pretend you are a bride-to-be to see what kind of service the wedding gown shop provides and how they treat potential customers. You need to know every detail of the business to give the accurate impression that you are the go-to person for anyone planning a wedding.

CareerThis Is How You Quit A Job Like A Class-act by Spazwik(op): 4:46pm On Jul 11, 2017
In this job-hopping generation, it’s easy to get caught up in excitement over a new job and neglect the details of wrapping up your current gig. And yet, after all the effort it took to get and retain your job, the last thing you want to do is burn bridges by behaving carelessly in your winding-up days there.

Here are a few things you should do to ensure you leave on great terms, with the best possible impression on your soon-to-be-former boss and colleagues.

Tell your boss face-to-face

Employees-bosses dynamics may differ, but it’s crucial they know you’re leaving in person—absolutely not over email. Get an appointment booked, and tell them you’ve been offered another opportunity. If you’re still open to staying at your job, you can say, ‘I’d love to get your thoughts,’ and see if they seem interested in making a counter-offer, or,otherwise you can focus on the new job.

The idea is to leave with your head held high – a total success, leaving at the apex of achievement, having conquered all the opposition, broken all records. That’s the way to go.

Give at least two weeks’ notice.

This is not legally required, but it agrees with common workplace convention, and considered the ‘right way’ to leave a job—otherwise, you could really be leaving your organisation and colleagues high and dry.

This way the position gets a replacement and your personal items get packed. Give the timely notice the position deserves, and don’t make a huge deal if you can help it. You probably don’t have to mention anything to your colleagues until the final week.

Make a good transition plan

Be sure to let your boss and colleagues know that you’re ready to tie up loose ends and pass on any pending projects before leaving. There’s no rule on this, but it’s the classy thing to do.

It’s important not to burn any bridges, work relationships are important and you never know when you may need to leverage one of your connections in the future. Leaving on good terms will benefit you professionally and personally.

Show gratitude

Regardless of what spurred you to look for a new opportunity, demonstrate your appreciation for the opportunity right up to the last minute of your last day.

Whatever your reason for quitting, never bad-mouth your ex-employer in public forums. It is easy to succumb to the urge to vent your frustrations, but once you put something out there publicly, its very difficult to take back. Have some class and move on without making a big scene.

Keep in touch

Be smart: Never burn bridges and don’t hold grudges. Like it was mentioned above, don’t badmouth or gossip about your former employer. Remember, your network is your net worth.

Leave with class – not every boss has a sense of humour if an employee quits a job. You might think it’s funny, but not everyone will be amused if you left on a bad note.

Now that you’re finally on your way out, do it right and start a new adventure. Freedom!

Nairaland GeneralNigeria Fails To Enforce Ban On Dirty Fuel Imports by Spazwik(op): 5:01pm On Jul 05, 2017
The Federal Government’s ban on the importation of dirty fuels into the country failed to come into effect on July 1, 2017 as announced in December last year.

On December 1, 2016 in Abuja, Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire agreed to ban the importation of Europe’s dirty fuels, limiting sulphur in fuels from 3,000 parts per million to 50 ppm.

The then Minister of Environment, Mrs. Amina Mohammed, said the enforcement of the ban in Nigeria would begin from July 1, 2017.

“From July 1, 2017, we will commence the enforcement of the 50ppm sulphur in fuel. And the July deadline is on all fuels, your diesel, petrol and kerosene. Everybody knows that this is going to take some efforts, which is why we gave the six months’ notice. What is more important is that we are working with the refineries on a long-term approach,” Mohammed had said.

According to the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, the case for 100 ppm was made for the 2015/2016 fuel specifications, but the levels were maintained at 3,000 ppm for diesel; 1,000 ppm for Premium Motor Spirit (petrol); and 1,000 ppm for Household Kerosene.

Compared to other parts of the world, such as Europe and North America, fuel quality in many African countries, including Nigeria, is very poor.

European standards for fuel quality include Euro IV (50 ppm for petrol and diesel) and Euro V (10 ppm).

According to the United Nations Environment Programme, the move to ban dirty fuel imports by Nigeria and others will dramatically reduce vehicle emissions and help more than 250 million people to breathe safer and cleaner air.

It noted that a report by Public Eye in September last year exposed how European trading companies were exploiting the weak regulatory standards in West African countries, allowing for the exportation of fuels with sulphur levels up to 300 times higher than was permitted in Europe.

Platts reported last month that the contentious subject of an announced fuel specification change was holding up the country’s much-delayed direct sale of crude oil and direct purchase of products’ programme for 2017, citing trading sources.

It said the NNPC and government officials had previously said that from July 1, the specification of petrol imports would change to 150 ppm sulphur maximum from 1,000 ppm.

Under the DSDP model, selected overseas refiners, trading companies and indigenous companies are allocated crude supplies in exchange for delivery of an equal value of petrol and other refined products to the NNPC.

How to make Dambu Nama

https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/live-supermart/recipe_images/r82aUS8t5lb3g4EIKo2W.jpg

Dambu Nama, originating from Northern Nigeria has won hearts south of Nigeria. When we thought nothing could top suya and kilishi, we were introduced to this fluffy meaty snack. Now you get to make this in the comfort of your home no hawkers involved!!

1. Wash the meat and cut into chunks.
2. Put meat into a pot with 1½ seasoning cubes, half chopped onions, 2 crushed garlic cloves and ginger powder. Cook with a little water until very tender and the meat pulls apart very easily. Ensure water dries out.
3. Put meat on a cutting board and shred the meat using two forks to pull apart in opposite direction. Alternatively, pound meat in a mortar.
4. Transfer to mixing bowl. Add in the suya spice, remaining ½ seasoning and chili powder. Mix well and set aside.
5. Pour oil into a wok/frying pan and put on medium heat. Shallow fry the meat and stir constantly until golden brown and crumbly. Ensure the oil is not too much.
6. Allow cooling before serving. Dambu Nama can keep in the fridge for about 2 weeks if kept air tight.

How to make Moin Moin

https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/live-supermart/recipe_images/6SsHVWQy9FDf1LqsXNEZ.jpg

Moin Moin with Ogi (pap) on a Saturday morning is a ritual in many Yoruba homes. Every time I'm away I crave this delicacy and I decided I have to make this myself. Here is moin moin the way my mama taught me, this way home is always with you.

Method

1. Before preparing - Soak your beans in a bowl of water for about 20 minutes and peel by rubbing the beans in between your palms until the skin comes off. Drain out the water with the skin. Soak again overnight or alternatively do this for about 3 hours.
2. Cook your eggs till they are hard boiled and slice into wedges. Tear apart the smoked Titus into a bowl while also deboning. Set aside.
3. Blend the tatase, rodo, beans, crayfish and ½ onion until smooth. Pour the mixture into a medium bowl, add in ¼ cup oil, the shredded fish, seasoning cubes, curry and mix.
4. How to fold the banana leaves - First soak leaves in salt water to clean it. Bring in both edges of the leaf blade to overlap (leaf spine facing you), one on the other closing off the bottom as tightly as possible (the end of the stalk). Almost like a cone.
5. Pad the base of a big pot and add in some water, about 1 inch high. Pour in the Moin Moin mixture. Fold in the open part of the leaf. Cook for about 1 hour or until firm.
6. Serve with a bowl of ogi or garri.

Investment5 Helpful Tips For Launching A Tech Startup by Spazwik(op): 5:00pm On Jul 04, 2017
It’s the norm for aspiring entrepreneurs these days to want to build a tech-based business, be it a mobile app, a cloud-based service or a social sharing platform. It’s the world we live in – more and more of us are tech-savvy.

Here are tips to get that tech startup rolling.

Build a product

It sounds obvious. When starting a tech company, focus on building the product. Product is 30 percent of the total work required long term, but often other priorities take early focus away from a product.

Once the product is solid, companies can shift their focus to the other 70 percent, which is sales, marketing, service and support.

Bootstrap your startup

Too many people make too much about raising initial funds to build their startups. But bootstrapping is easier than you think.

A great way to get started is to build your product as a side project, while you’re in a job and still earning. When you’re starting small, you can really focus on the best basic ways to solve the problem for a customer. Again, once you have validation of your idea, you can gradually invest in your product’s future iterations.

Outsource in the beginning

Running a startup of any kind, not just a tech startup, is all about phases. In the beginning it’s hard to curate and manage your technology architecture in-house. Try outsourcing this piece of the puzzle while you’re getting your feet on the ground.

Not only can this be cost effective in the early stages of growth, but it also allows you to invest your time in building connections, as opposed to hopelessly flipping through a Tech for Dummies guide.

Know a bit of coding

It’s really tough when you don’t understand any coding. Although that’s not imperative, it definitely helps to understand the concepts yourself when you’re discussing the product with your developers in the initial stages.

If you’re looking to build a mobile app, let’s say an iOS app, you can run through an online course on Udemy that teaches the fundamentals of building an iOS app. Similarly, if you’re looking to build a website, you can learn those fundamentals, based on the programming language of choice.

Don’t box yourself in

The capabilities of technology are endless, but if you’re someone without a solid background in the field, it can be hard to gauge exactly how it will continue to evolve. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that the technology you’re working with now is only capable of serving a single group.

Innovations and enhancements pop up every day, so your initial business model could grow far larger than you ever imagined. Never put yourself in a small box that you can’t get out of and always look for ways to increase efficiency, enhance the user experience and bring new and added value to your customers.
