In the BBC report you mentioned, the brothers are traditionally wrong. As long as the woman is alive she has 100% access to her father's wealth. If she marries, she begins to answer her husband's name. But as long as she isn't or divorced she has access.

Female children inherit their parent's private properties.

For example, if a man has a business company or shares or houses in other towns or areas his female children inherit those ones.

What they can't inherit is the obi. That is the ancestral home or farmlands. Those belong to the family along the male line. It is a way of self preservation. This is not an opinion but an explanation.

First you must understand that the properties in question here are ancestral lands and not private properties.

For private properties, they belong to anyone whom the owner decides to will to.

For ancestral lands they belong to the Umu nna (Kindred). Even the man cannot sell it on his own. It's the Umu Nna that is responsible for the ancestral lands irrespective of whether a building is on it.

Inheritance of ancestral property flows along the male line and that is because the females inherit through their husbands. When a man has only daughters and let's assume they did not marry, the daughters remain in possession of their father's properties until they die.

There's a Supreme Court judgement that prohibits discrimination against women in inheritance. But whether that also affects ancestral lands is what I don't know.
