Security Experts Frown At EFCC's Media Trial in Alleged Confrontation with NAF Personnel in Kaduna

Security experts have expressed concerns with the manner in which the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has so far handled its alleged fracas with Nigerian Air Force (NAF) personnel in Kaduna.

The experts specifically frowned at EFCC’s legendary style and strategy of resorting to media trial, in this case with another government agency, without exploiting other channels or avenues available to resolving the matter.

According to the experts, no matter the issue at stake, the EFCC should have engaged the leadership of the NAF at Kaduna and if that failed, reached out to the NAF leadership at their headquarters in Abuja, rather than continue to regale in seeking public sympathy even before the matter is thoroughly investigated.

According to one of the experts, “the EFCC and the NAF are both government institutions with key roles to play in the security architecture of our country. Therefore, it does not augur well for them to be seen bickering over an issue that could have been easily managed.”

One of the experts, Demola Mubarak, reeled out EFCC’s well-known tactics of media trial and judgement which dates back to several years and which has not in any way helped their cause and image but instead portrayed them as unprofessional and always seeking the easy way out.

Specifically, he referred to a published article by one Sulaiman Aledeh in The Guardian of 24 November 2021 titled, ‘The EFCC gaffes, media trials and politics,’ where EFCC’s strategy of trial-by-media has not in any way helped the Commission in cracking cases. In the article, Aledeh attributed EFCC’s style of media trial to either, “distrust in Nigeria’s judiciary or the absence of enough facts and evidence to charge the alleged people”.

The writer was further quoted as stating that, “latching on to pent-up emotions from the Nigerian public would not give the EFCC the respect and attention it desires. Instead, winning cases by thoroughly going through the court processes will earn the Commission the respect it deserves”.

Speaking further, Mubarak referred to a similar case regarding students of Obafemi Awolowo University that was poorly handled by operatives of the EFCC. In this instance, the EFCC media trial style was thoroughly dissected by Sunday Ehigiator in a piece published in ThisDay newspaper of 13 November 2023, where he noted that the Commission’s strategy of public shaming without due profiling, fell short of global best practices.

Writing under the banner, ‘OAU Invasion and EFCC’s Penchant for Arbitrary Raids, Media Trials’ Mr Ehigiator stated that “even before profiling the students, the EFCC had issued a press release that went viral and posted the students on their official social media platforms tagging them fraudsters. They also included their names in the press release.”

Speaking on the allegation by the EFCC that NAF personnel stormed their office in Kaduna and attempted to release their colleagues, the experts unanimously noted that irrespective of what occurred, the approach adopted by the anti-graft agency was totally uncalled for and unnecessary, noting that 2 critical government agencies must learn to find amicable ways of resolving issues involving their staff.

The experts went further to commend the NAF and its leadership for their maturity so far in handling the matter and for not taking the bait to respond to the media show by the EFCC.

In their final submission, the experts advised EFCC to desist from their ineffective strategy of media trial because it downgrades not just the operational standards of the agency but amounts to deliberate policy of intimidation. They ended by stating that, “the EFCC is meant to be an agency of uncompromising standards that should be a reflection of our domestic and international image in the fight against corruption.”

Crime / EFCC-NAF Face-off And The Worrisome Media Trial By Saleh Labaran by Spyetv: 10:52pm On Nov 18, 2023
It is very worrisome how the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) has so far handled its alleged fracas with Nigerian Air Force (NAF) personnel in Kaduna. One doesn’t need to be a security expert to frown at how EFCC resorted to seeming media trial, in this past and in this case with another government agency, without exploiting other channels or avenues available to resolving the matter.

No matter the issue at stake, the EFCC should have engaged the leadership of the NAF at Kaduna and if that failed reached out to the NAF leadership at their headquarters in Abuja, rather than seeking public sympathy even before the matter is being thoroughly investigated.

The EFCC and the NAF are both government institutions with key roles to play in the security architecture of our country. Therefore, it does not augur well for the Federal Government for them to be seen bickering over an issue that could have been easily managed.

While EFCC has succeeded in its war against corruption and cybercrimes, its tactics of media trial and judgement has not in any way helped its cause and, in some instances, dent its image. This has been the general opinions of security experts and media professional. For instance writing in the Guardian on November 24, 2021 titled, ‘The EFCC gaffes, media trials and politics,’ Sulaiman Aledeh attributed EFCC’s style of media trial to either, ‘distrust in Nigeria’s judiciary or the absence of enough facts and evidence to charge the alleged people.’

The writer wrote that “Latching on to pent-up emotions from the Nigerian public would not give the EFCC the respect and attention it desires. Instead, winning cases by thoroughly going through the court processes will earn the Commission the respect it deserves.”

There was a similar case regarding students of Obafemi Awolowo University that was poorly handled by operatives of the EFCC. Here, the EFCC media trial style was dissected by Sunday Ehigiator in a piece published in ThisDay Newspaper of 13 November 2023, where he noted that the Commission’s strategy of public shaming without due profiling, fell short of global best practices.

While the EFCC has the right to feel embittered by the allegation that NAF personnel stormed their office in Kaduna and attempted to release their colleagues, irrespective of what occurred, the approach adopted by the graft agency was uncalled for and unnecessary, because it would merely create needless inter-agency rivalry.

I strongly believe that critical government agencies must learn to find amicable ways of solving issues involving their staff and operatives. While one must commend the NAF and its leadership for their maturity and dignified silence on the matter, it is nevertheless necessary that it investigated the incident and take appropriate punitive measures if its personnel conduct themselves in most inappropriate manners.

As agencies within the security sectors their bosses and especially the spokespersons should iron out their differences and nip the public altercation in the bud.

... Intercepts $4.8m, CFA57m suspected fake currencies on Lokoja-Abuja highway; as Sokoto district head bags 5 years in jail over drug dealing

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have taken into custody two wanted heads of transnational criminal organisations with multi-billion-naira worth of illicit drugs and assets seized from them after weeks of intelligence-led operations across the country and outside Nigeria.

Director, Media & Advocacy, Femi Babafemi disclosed in a press statement that the arrest of the wanted drug lords came on the heels of the interception of consignments of cocaine and heroin buried in the bellies of two traffickers heading to Paris, France and Doha, Qatar by NDLEA officers at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, NAIA, Abuja.

Operatives at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, MMIA, Ikeja Lagos on Tuesday 10th October succeeded in taking into custody, Hakeem Babatunde Salami, the arrowhead of "Tajudeen Babatunde Abioye Transnational Criminal Organization" involved in the illicit trade of several narcotics including Cocaine, Heroin, Methamphetamine, and Ephedrine between Nigeria, Brazil, Ghana, South Africa, Mozambique, and Europe. He fled Nigeria to South Africa upon the arrest of a member of his syndicate, Suleiman Babatunde Oba at the Lagos airport on August 25 over attempt to export 25.10kgs of ephedrine to South Africa.

Hakeem Babatunde Salami was however smoked out of hiding through partnership with South African authorities and other intelligence and investigative mechanisms. While some of his luxury vehicles have been seized and his home in Surulere Lagos sealed, other members of the cartel already in custody include Suleiman and Godwin Edet Mathew.

In his statement, he claimed he was into the importation of building materials from China to Nigeria and used to sell gold in South Africa before delving into the illicit drug trade about two years ago.

The head of another cartel, Okafor Ikechukwu Williams (aka Jantu) and his wife, Okafor Ifeyinwa Grace were also taken into custody on Thursday 5th October when NDLEA operatives raided their hideout at 9 Awa Street, Ago Palace, Okota area of Lagos where they recovered 27.566 kilograms of methamphetamine concealed in a blue box and two sacks, ready for export to Europe and Asia. Their Lexus RX350 marked ABJ 512 AY parked in the house was also seized during the operation. Their arrest followed weeks of intelligence gathering about the activities of the criminal network.

At the Abuja airport, operatives on Friday 6th October arrested a drug trafficker, Nwofor Ejiogu Charles, 45, during the outward clearance of Qatar Airways flight QR 1432 to Doha. After body scan revealed he ingested cocaine, he was placed under observation during which he excreted 75 pellets of cocaine weighing 1.653kgs. At the point of his arrest, Nwofor who was the last passenger to board his flight offered to compromise an NDLEA officer with $3,000 to free him.

The following day, Saturday 7th October, another trafficker, Nwufo Charles Okwudili, 45, was also arrested while attempting to board Lufthansa Airlines flight LH 0595 to Paris, France via Frankfurt, Germany. After being put through body scanner, he was taken into recovery room where he excreted 96 wraps of heroin he ingested with a total weight of 1.413kgs.

Meanwhile, NDLEA operatives on patrol along Okene -Lokoja-Abuja expressway on Tuesday 10th October intercepted a commercial bus coming from Lagos to Kano. A search of the bus led to the seizure of Four Million, Eight Hundred and Eighty Thousand US Dollars ($4,880,000), and Fifty-Seven Million Céfa, (CFA57,000,000) suspected to be counterfeits.

In Sokoto, the Federal High Court in the state capital presided over by Justice Ahmad Mahmud has sentenced an acting district head, Alhaji Umar Mohammed (aka Dan Bala) to five and a half years in jail on four count charges of possession and dealing in 436.38kgs cannabis and 7kgs psychotropic drugs brought against him by NDLEA in October 2022. He was convicted and sentenced to two years on each of counts 1 and 2 with an option of N1million fine, and eight months on each of counts 3 and 4 without an option of fine.

Operatives in Edo state on Wednesday 11th October stormed the Orue forest, Owan West LGA where they arrested Happy Akashili, 37, and Solomon Uwesue, 40 in a hut located inside a cannabis farm measuring 2.367308 hectares which was destroyed, with 92kgs already processed skunk recovered, while 49kgs of same substance were also seized at Ogbeturu camp.

The Commands across the country balanced their drug supply reduction operations with War Against Drug Abuse, WADA, advocacy campaigns to schools, markets, worship centres and communities. Some of these include: WADA sensitisation lecture on Drug Use and Mental Health for students of 15 secondary schools in Ibadan metropolis at the University of Ibadan, Oyo state; WADA sensitisation lecture for students of Ascension College, Iworo Imeke, Badagry Lagos; WADA sensitisation lecture at Modern Comprehensive College, Amokwe, Udi LGA, Enugu; WADA sensitisation lecture for students of National Secondary school, Awka; Students of JIBWIS Islamic Science Secondary school, Herwagana, Gombe; students of Government College, Makurdi, Benue; students of Government secondary school (Boys), Kafin Maiyaki, Kano and students of JNI Special Model primary School, Gusau, Zamfara.

Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) assured that officers and men of the Agency will never let down their guards no matter the tricks and distractions orchestrated against it by criminal networks.

Anti-Narcotics Officers of NDLEA Launch Manhunt for Lekki Drug Dealer Who Crushed Operative to Escape Arrest

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has launched a manhunt for a Lekki Lagos-based notorious drug dealer, Sowunmi Ayodeji Kayode, who is now on the run after driving his luxury car to crush an NDLEA officer in his bid to escape arrest when operatives were on a search of his house last weekend.

Director, Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi disclosed in a press statement on Wednesday that the anti-narcotics officers of the Agency had on Friday 18th August stormed the residence of the wanted drug dealer located at 2/3 Adetola Ayeni close, Lekki, Lagos for a search and possible arrest following credible intelligence that he was dealing in illicit drugs in his house.

He said, although he was not in the house when operatives got into his compound, he however returned while a search of his apartment was ongoing. In a dramatic twist, as soon as he drove into the premises and sighted NDLEA officers, he engaged his car in reverse gear, knocked down one of the officers, pulled down his gate before plunging the vehicle into the fence of the opposite compound.

Babafemi noted that the force of his car’s speed also pulled down the concrete wall of his neighbour’s compound and from there he dived out of the vehicle to escape.

A thorough search of his apartment however led to the recovery of 10.5 kilograms of Loud, while the operative knocked down suffered multiple injuries all over his body and compound fracture on his two legs, for which he is currently on hospital admission for treatment.

Following the unpleasant development, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) has directed the deployment of appropriate operational assets of the Agency to smoke out the wanted suspect from his hiding. He also approved adequate medical care for the injured officer so that he can get back on his feet as soon as possible.

Warrior Returns: Pomp and Pageantry As Sokoto Welcome General Faruk Yahaya Home With Grand Reception, Traditional Turbaning

All roads led to Sokoto, the capital city of Sokoto state in North West Nigeria on Saturday 12 August 2023, as the cream of the society, from all works of life, made their way to the seat of the caliphate to honour an illustrious and accomplished son of Sokoto, Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya rtd CFR, Zaruman Sokoto, Dike Ogu of Imo.

In a beautiful piece written and signed by Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, Gen Yahaya retired from active military service on 23 June 2023, when he formally handed over the mantle of leadership and command of the Nigerian Army to the incumbent Chief of Army Staff, having meritoriously and unblemishly served in the Nigerian Army for about 37 years.

A periscopic look into his personality reveals a man imbued with fortitude, diligence, dedication, love for fatherland, spiced with his amiableness, making him perpetually put service interest above personal interest. These rare traits, paved the way for his attainment of the zenith of his lofty and eventful career in the Nigerian Army and the Armed Forces of Nigeria as the 22nd COAS.

The impressive turn out of all and sundry, the low and the mighty, the sight of young men on horses' and camels' back adorned in green white and green attire, the motor bikers, the tricycle riders and pedestrians, all trooped out to cheer the illustrious son of Sifawa Bodinga LGA of Sokoto state with a very warm grand reception at the Sokoto state Sports Complex, where he was honoured with a colourful parade staged by pupils from various schools in Sokoto, Cultural troupes performance, Durbar display and streams of glowing tributes.

The Chairman of the Grand reception, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, who spoke glowingly about the celebrant, lauded him as an outstanding Sokoto son, who made enormous commitment in service through the Nigerian Army to fatherland and humanity.

The Governor of Sokoto state, Dr Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, described him as a tested and reliable personage, whose services will be craved by all while the Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa gave his impression of him, as a professional and military leader extraordinaire.

Speaking about his predecessor, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja painted the picture of a mentor and a leader, whose lofty and eventful military career, left indelible legacies from the beginning of his military career to its glorious end.
In his views, His Eminence, Alhaji (Dr)Saad Abubakar III CFR, Sultan of Sokoto described him as a renowned General, who has proven his mettle in battle, administration and service to his people and nation. No wonder he was turbaned today Sunday 13 August 2023 by the Sultan, as the Zaruman Sokoto. Zaruman Sokoto is a traditional title bestowed on a warrior, who has distinguished himself in the field of battle. He is also regarded strategically, as one of the king makers.

At home, the highly revered General is a firm but kind and caring dad to his children, a loving husband to his darling wife, Mrs Salamatu Faruk Yahaya; another, quintessential personality, whose tenure as the President Nigerian Army Officers' Wives Association was characterized by execution of myriads of life changing empowerment projects and several philanthropic activities.

Aggregation of all these exceptional qualities and many more, make the Zaruman Sokoto stand out and tall amongst his peers and contemporaries.

The warm grand reception, cheering communal embrace and sheer love by the good people of Sokoto will continue to be savored not only by General Faruk Yahaya rtd, his family, friends and relations, but also all those who graced the auspicious event. The Nigerian Army remains particularly honoured by this act of recognition and celebration of one of its own by the good people of Sokoto.

"Enough is Enough, We'll Not Condone Deliberate, Unprovoked Harassment, and Unwarranted Killings of Our Police" - IGP Warns

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGZvXwPRVoQ
This strong warning is made clear again so that evil-doers, criminals, and agents of destruction in Nigeria will know that their offences against the State, its agencies, and its people will not go unpunished.

The Inspector-General of Police, Ag. IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun has emphatically declared that, henceforth the Nigeria Police Force under his watch will not condone deliberate and unprovoked harassment, attacks, and unwarranted killings of our Police Officers who have dedicated themselves to securing lives and property of all Nigerians.

IGP Egbetokun said this today, 8th August, 2023 at the August meeting of Strategic Police Managers which is a monthly forum for Police strategic communication, that coincides with the 50th day of his appointment as the Acting Inspector General of Police.

SpyeTV News reports that the meeting is convened to review the current state of the nation’s internal security, highlight some of NPF achievements, and to enliven policing strategies towards achieving the core symbols of new policing mantra – Service, Integrity and Excellence.

Egbetokun stressed that, every attack or killing of Police personnel henceforth will be met with a commensurate and lawful force as an attack on a public officer in the line of duty is tantamount to an attack on the state. "Enough is Enough. This strong warning is made clear again so that evil-doers, criminals, and agents of destruction in Nigeria will know that their offences against the State, its agencies, and its people will not go unpunished.

He made it clear in his remarks that we will not leave any stone unturned in our efforts to continually suppress and decimate criminality and heinous activities of non-state actors who cause pains, and sorrows in any part of the country.

He noted that the Nigeria Police Force under his leadership will operate under the following ideals which briefly embody my mission and vision statements - to have a professionally competent, service-driven, rule of law compliant, and people-friendly Police Force that will support the agenda of government for economic recovery and growth as well as socio-political development of Nigeria, and to evolve into a Police Force that is well positioned to respond appropriately and adequately to the dynamics of crimes and criminality in our contemporary society.

Crime / MT PRAISEL: Navy Reveals Lab Test Result, Reiterates Effort To Halt Oil Thefts by Spyetv: 10:33am On Aug 06, 2023
The Nigerian Navy on Sunday said, the results of the laboratory analysis of the product onboard MT PRAISEL by all agencies including NMDPRA indicate that the product displayed properties consistent with Nigerian industrial standard specification for HPFO that was approved.

Navy had earlier directed the vessel to Forward Operating Base ESCRAVOS anchorage for further investigation of the product onboard. The samples of the product onboard MT PRAISEL were collected on Thursday 3 August 2023 by 5 agencies including NNPCL, NMDPRA and also TSSL in line with laid procedures for laboratory test and verification of the claim.

Navy in a statement signed by its Director of Information, Commodore Dotun Ayo-Vaughan confirmed that this result therefore proves that the allegation and suspicion was totally wrong, unfounded, and perhaps mischievous.

It would be recalled that Naval Headquarters issued a Press Release on 4 August 2023 to clarify an allegation in respect of Motor Tanker (MT) PRAISEL which was reported to be conveying stolen crude oil with naval escorts onboard.

The vessel was reported to have been arrested by a private security outfit, Tantita Security Service Limited (TSSL) and an element of Operation DELTA SAFE (OPDS) but Navy affirmed that MT PRAISEL was duly approved by Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to load 1,114,721 Litres of High Pour Fuel Oil (HPFO) from Greenmac Energy Storage/Tarus Jetty Koko from 26 July – 8 August 2023.

Commodore Ayo Vaughan in the statement further added that the intelligence which was said to have been received in respect of the vessel and its product is equally wrong. This singular incident brings to the fore the high-handedness and unprofessional conduct displayed, with its attendant negative consequences for the supplier and buyer of the product, the vessel hired to convey it and other parties involved in the legitimate business.

Accordingly, the Nigerian Navy reiterates her strong stance to support every single effort to halt economic saboteurs and to fight against crude oil theft in Nigeria’s maritime environment (NME) provided such effort is done within the ambit of the law and with the best professional conduct.

Proper precaution therefore must be adhered to by all stakeholders to avoid unnecessary impediment to legitimate commercial activities and businesses in the maritime environment.

Maritime security issues entails more than spontaneous actions from insufficient and unverified information because the resultant wrong responses have direct impact on the nation’s economy hence it must be handled dispassionately and professionally.

In line with Mr President’s directive, the Navy under the able leadership of Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla will ensure transparent and robust inter-Service and inter-agency cooperation and synergy in all her operations. All stakeholders and players within the NME are thus advised to adopt the same posture in the overall interest of the nation.
