The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Lucky Irabor, has said the delay in the trial of terrorist’s, bandits, kidnappers, and other criminals for terror-related crimes is undermining efforts at curtailing security threats in the country. Irabor, who spoke at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) at the weekend in Lagos, noted that only 359 out of the 5,359 suspected bandits, kidnappers, and terrorists arrested by security forces in the Northeast and Northwest between 2017 and 2020 have been prosecuted in court. The development, Irabor said, has hindered the timely punishment of criminals to serve as a deterrent to others. He said: “The processes involved in criminal investigation, trial, and prosecution in Nigeria are cumbersome, hence leading to delay in the arraignment and dispensation of justice to suspected terrorists and other violent non-state actors arrested by troops and held in different correctional centers across the country. “This has often given criminals the impetus to believe that they will not be made to account for their evil activities. The recent upsurge in attacks by terrorists on correctional centers in the country can be viewed as part of efforts by the criminals to free their colleagues who have been in detention over time.” Irabor said the delay in the trial of such criminals was militating against military efforts at curbing security threats, thereby undermining national security and development. On the so-called Fulanisation and Islamisation of Nigeria, the CDS stressed that nobody, including President Muhammadu Buhari, ever directed him to treat Boko Haram militants with kid gloves. He also dismissed calls for the use of mercenaries in the war against Boko Haram and ISWAP but restated his preference for proper kitting and capacity-building for the armed forces. According to him, such calls amount to creating more problems than tackling the root causes of the current national security challenges. BREAKING: Military Air Strikes Target Terrorists Leader Fiya Ba Yuram's Enclave in Sambisa Forest, Neutralise Scores in Tumbuns The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) and other security agencies have continued to synergize and pull their resources together towards ensuring that terrorists, insurgents and other criminal elements are completely eliminated for the sake of peace and security of the nation. In particular, Nigerian Air Force aircraft have remained a critical factor in the counterterrorism and counterinsurgency strategies and efforts currently ongoing in the various theatres of operation nationwide. Indeed as recent as yesterday, 20 August 2022, NAF aircraft under the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI carried out some strikes on terrorists enclave in Sambisa Forest and the Tumbuns in Borno State with varying degrees of success recorded. Acting on credible and actionable intelligence, SpyeTV News learnt that NAF aircraft were directed to an active location in Sambisa Forest believed to be the enclave of notorious terrorist, Fiya Ba Yuram. Fiya Ba Yuram is the current ISWAP leader of Sambisa Forest who took over the leadership following the demise of Abubakar Shekau. Our source noted that the title'Fiya' connotes the most senior position in the terrorist's military leadership structure. Intelligence source also noted that Yuram was an ally of Shekau until his demise after which he switched allegiance to ISWAP. On arrival, the location was observed to be active with terrorists seen gathering. Air strikes were then authorized and carried out on the location. An assessment of the location after the strikes revealed it to be successful, though it remained unconfirmed if Fiya Ba Yuram was among the terrorists neutralized in the strikes. Similar air strikes were also undertaken in the Tunbuns near Lake Chad after suspected terrorists' activities were observed in the area believed to be a training camp. The targets were subsequently acquired and engulfed in flames all after. The aftermath of the airstrike revealed that pandemonium broke out as the remnant of surviving terrorists took cover under nearby trees which were later struck by the aircraft. Eventhough it remained uncertain and unclear if Fiya Ba Yuram was among the terrorists neutralized in the weekend strikes, the efforts of military must be commended. The ability of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies to pick out key terrorist targets for elimination, alongside their foot soldiers is also indicative of the credibility of the intelligence provided. The need, therefore, for all Nigerians to rally round and support the Armed Forces of Nigeria AFN and other security agencies remains a key motivator towards reducing, to the barest minimum, the threats posed by the activities of terrorists and insurgents. When contacted, the NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet confirmed the strikes stating that, 'Yes strikes were carried out on some specific targets in the Tunbuns and Sambisa with varying degrees of successes recorded. The NAF won't however be drawn into the details of those neutralized.' |
Army Rejects Unethical Media Reports, Explains COAS Approval of Voluntary Retirement of 243 Personnel The Nigerian Army has rejected and rebut the allegation that the soldiers are proceeding on voluntary retirement due to alleged corruption, poor service conditions and low morale as recently reported by some media outfits in the social media. In a statement signed by Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu described the report as a concoction of the imagination of the unrepentant enemies of the nation and mischief makers and should be outrightly discountenanced by the public. Genera Nwachukwu said the subjective and unethical report is a distraction and another failed attempt at dampening the morale and fighting will of the loyal, dedicated and patriotic fighting force of the Nigerian Army It is therefore not an aberration that the COAS granted approval for 91 NA/32/4792 WO NDAGANA ISHIAKU and 242 others to voluntarily discharge from the Nigerian Army as being unprofessionally manipulated by some media. He opined that, perhaps these impenitent mischief makers need to be schooled to understand that the Nigerian Army is not a conscript Army, and that recruitment into the Nigerian Army voluntary with extant policy on discharge and retirement of soldiers and officers respectively, like other organizations. "This provides its personnel the opportunity to apply for voluntary discharge, when they deem fit and meet the terms and conditions as stipulated in the Harmonized Terms and Conditions of Service soldiers/ratings/airmen (Revised) 2017. "It is thus, the inalienable right of a personnel to voluntarily or on medical grounds apply for discharge, if they meet the terms," he said. He added that, given the pedigree and mannerism of the publisher of the ill-fated report, it is clear, that it is targeted at deflating the high morale of troops by downplaying recent critical interventions by the COAS Lt Gen Faruk Yahaya on troops' welfare. Welfare includes; car loans, housing loans, extensive construction of new accomodation, massive renovation of old and dilapidated accomodation, building of befitting residences and issuing of vehicles to Regimental Sergeant Majors, scholarship awards to children and wards of fallen heroes and other unique interventions in the theatres of operation to sustain the heightening morale of troops. These interventions evidently account for troops' game changing onslaught in the NorthEast. It must also be mentioned, that the quantum of equipment that have been injected into the theatres and prompt payment of operational allowances, have all turned the tide against the insurgents. "Also worthy of note is the welfare flight for troops, which has significantly reduced the burden of troops travelling in and out of the theatres, in addition to huge commitment on the medical needs of wounded-in-action soldiers and the barracks communities. Equally important, is the fact that troops are now being regularly and consciously rotated from the frontline, hence, issues of overstay and battle fatigue are gradually being overcome. Suffice to say, that some of these recently discharged soldiers are beneficiaries of these giant strides. The COAS, once again congratulates the discharging personnel for their gallantry, patriotism, loyalty and courage while in service and wishes them the very best as they successfully exit active service from the NA. He also reiterates his avowed determination to continue to have direct impact on the welfare and wellbeing of both serving and retired personnel. He is also assuring the retirees that soon, their various commanders would organise a farewell luncheon in their honour, as it is the practice in the Nigerian Army since Gen Yahaya took over command.

By SpyeTV News, Over the weekend, NAF aircraft struck a terrorists gathering at Kurebe in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State after intelligence revealed that the terrorists had assembled for an important meeting hosted by Aminu Duniya, a Boko Haram terrorist commander. SpyeTV News reports that the Boko Haram leader, Aminu Duniya was said to have invited the terrorists to his enclave at Kurebe to the meeting which obviously attracted numerous terrorists who came in large numbers on their motorbikes. Sources revealed that the air strike was successful and resulted in the death of many terrorists, though it remains unclear if Aminu Duniya was also neutralized in the strike. https://www.spyetv.com.ng/2022/08/naf-fighter-jet-strike-terrorists.html?m=1 It should be noted that Kurebe is a known terrorists haven as the local inhabitants of Kurebe have since vacated the villages in and around the area after the terrorists drove them away in 2021. The strike at Kurebe came barely hours after a coordinated joint air and ground operations, neutralized several terrorists operating around Damba - Galbi axis in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The activities of the terrorists continued to make life unbearable to locals in the area. So, when intelligence had revealed that the terrorists planned on overuning a nearby village within the visinity, the military saw that as an opportunity to surprise them. While Nigerian Army troops laid siege around the location, NAF aircraft were directed to the suspected location of the terrorists which was then attacked. Several terrorists were confirmed killed after the strike.

Some repentant Boko-Haram members were on Saturday 13th August 2022 engaged in community sanitation in Maiduguri City as part of measures preparing them for reintegration. The exercise was organised by Centre for Democracy Development (CDD), in collaboration with the Borno State Government. Speaking on the exercise, Prof. Mala Mustafa, a Senior Research Fellow with CDD, said the development was to prepare them for community services as part of the reintegration process. “The rational behind this exercise is for CDD to support the Borno State Government as part of preparatory work for the reintegration of the ex-combatants. “We felt it’s imperative to change the narrative, particularly the negative perception about them among community members. “We want to rebuild relationship and trust between those that surrendered and community members,” Mustafa said. He explained that 400 of the repentant insurgents had been mobilised for the exercise with 50 of them participating this Saturday for a start in Maiduguri Hajj Camp that is housing over 12,000 of the repentants and thier families. Mustafa said the exercise by the repentants would be gradually extended to some selected communities in Maiduguri and its environment. According to him, the repentants have been provided some training, particularly on civic education on how to deal with the challenges of stereotyping, while some Islamic clerics handled them on extremism. Also, the Special Adviser to Governor Babagana Zulum on Security, Gen. Abdullahi Ishaq, lauded the Initiative by CDD which he said had been supporting the reintegration process. “CDD provided the equipment for this exercise and has been providing us with technical advice as good partners,” Ishaq said. He noted that the “Sulhu Alheri” initiative taken by government after years of the insurgency, had led to unprecedented number of insurgents surrendering which led to improved peace in affected areas of Borno. “Today, Maiduguri is more peaceful than Abuja. We want to continue to call on communities to support this sulhu (peace) process by accepting them,” Ishaq said. He called for more support to Borno government from well meaning Nigerians and organisations in facilitating the process which required funding and other support. Some of the repentants wearing T-shirts bearing inscriptions like “Please forgive us! We have repented” and “Let’s rebuild Borno again”, called on the public for forgiveness and acceptance for more peace and progress of the state. Recalled that over 70,000 insurgents and members of thier families have surrendered to the authorities as at July 29. ... Air Chief Reviews NAF ongoing Operations in Kaduna The Nigerian Air Force on Wednesday said, the effect of strikes undertaken by NAF aircraft have revealed that several terrorists' have been eliminated and their enclaves destroyed in the Northwest, Nigeria. In a WhatsApp Message shared by the NAF spokesperson Gabkwet revealed that, one of such strikes which occurred yesterday, 9 August 2022 resulted in the elimination of a well known well known terrorists' kingpin, Alhaji Shanono operating in Kaduna State. Gabkwet said, "following receipt of intelligence on 9 August 2022 that a well known terrorists' kingpin, Alhaji Shanono, had scheduled a meeting with his foot soldiers at Ukambo, a village about 131 km from Kaduna, the Air Component of Operation Whirl Punch dispatched aircraft for interdiction mission at the location. "Overhead the location, terrorists were sighted under clusters of trees at the foot of Ukambo high ground and after ensuring the absence of civilian settlements within the location, the crew received the authorization to strike,", he revealed. He said, feedback from local sources disclosed that over 30 rifles and 20 motorbikes were destroyed while about 18 terrorists, including Alhaji Shanono, were neutralized while others sustained various degree of injuries. Sources also revealed that not less than 26 kidnapped victims earlier held by the terrorists were released as a result of the airstrike. NAF spokesperson also added that, a similar strikes were also undertaken in the Northeas as the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai had their tasks well cut out for them as they have been fully engaged in conducting air interdiction missions on terrorists’ targets in Borno State. He noted that one of such operations was conducted on 6 August 2022 at Gazuwa, about 1.2 kilometers to Gargash, after intelligences revealed that infighting for relevance and supremacy was underway between terrorists of the Shekau faction and terrorists aligned to Islamic State of West Africa (ISWAP). "The state of confusion and disorder among the 2 terrorists’ factions thus presented an opportunity for a surprise strike by NAF pilots which was carried out using 2 aircraft types. It should be noted that though the map coordinates led the pilots to the exact site of the infighting, the location also had an ISWAP flag hoisted on the structure and 3 solar panels on the rooftop. "Intelligence received and corroborated by local sources revealed the strike was a success as the terrorists did not anticipate it with several eliminated and others injured", he said. The impact of the strikes is said to have reverberated through the remaining terrorists’ camps who are beginning to realize that they are fighting an unjust and lost cause that will no doubt lead to their death. Most are said to be contemplating surrendering just like others before them. Meanwhile, the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, was earlier in Kaduna to review ongoing operations and give further directives. From the briefings received by the CAS, it is evident that so far, the directives given to the operational commanders is yielding the requisite outcome. Air Marshal Amao, in addressing the commanders, reminded them of the need to remain steadfast and focused on the task ahead. 'We can't afford to let down our guards', he said. This is even as intensive air operations endured in the entire military theatres of operation as NAF aircraft continue to seek and decimate enemies of the state in their attempts to make life unbearable for innocent Nigerians. Meanwhile, sources have confirmed that the Nigerian military are exuding so much confidence especially with the level of successes being recorded. They are also optimistic that the counterterrorism strategies and efforts will in no distant time yield the expected outcome even beyond the northeast. The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Lucky Irabor, says the military is working on upgrading the intelligence management procedures of the defence and security sector to strengthen the overall security architecture in the country. General Irabor disclosed this while delivering a Graduation Lecture for Course 30 of the National Defence College (NDC) on the topic “National Security and Development: Strategic Options for Nigeria’’ on Wednesday in Abuja. CDS said it had become imperative that Nigeria should constantly keep abreast of the security and development dynamics within her strategic neighbourhood especially in West and Central Africa. The CDS who identified the need to deepen strategic communication, implement a press code for responsible Journalism and pursue proactive security measures to reduce the impact of regional dynamics in the country said, on the press code for the media, the strategy required the development of guidelines for reporting difficult stories including stories of conflict and terrorism. According to him, the German Press Code for example, says in reporting actual and threatened acts of violence, the press should carefully weigh the public interest in information against the interest of victims and other people involved. Irabor said that media should report on such incidents in an independent and authentic way, but not allow itself to be made the tool of criminals. He urged the Nigerian media to emulate and domesticate the German Press Code as its guiding principle in reportage. Irabor said there was need to encourage a Whole-of-Society Approach to security by deepening strategic communication to educate the populace on the fact that issues of security are a collective responsibility. According to him, everybody in the society ought to be a relevant stakeholder. “Timely information on suspicious movements of strangers in a community might be the main lead to provide the needed early warning for the relevant government agency to swing into action. “Accordingly, we need to formulate a robust and proactive communication strategy that draws all citizens to the realisation of their roles in protecting the nation while also using the same medium to pre-empt and counter narratives of the insurgents. “The strategy could also incorporate modalities for the reorientation and practicable re-integration of surrendered insurgents into the society. “The National Orientation Agency (NOA) needs to be reinvigorated, reorganised and properly funded alongside all other relevant stakeholders in the society. "This will encourage the populace to have renewed confidence in the government and they will be encouraged to provide relevant information to the relevant government agencies. “This will enhance national security and development in Nigeria,’’ he said. “In addition, the thrust of our foreign policy should also be re-engineered to ensure that Nigeria is actively engaged in the promotion of peace and security within our sphere of influence in West and Central Africa. “To this effect, the Federal Government through relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), could as a matter of priority, explore available bilateral and multilateral opportunities at our disposal to steer the course of security and development within the countries of interests bearing in mind the realities of the domestic base of our foreign policy,’’ he added. Irabor said an overview of the plethora of security challenges bedevilling the country indicated the need to consider a review of the strategic approach towards addressing them. He said the appraisal of the current security architecture revealed concerns with respect to limited divergent approach to tackling the emerging threats, ineffective media management as well as regional security dynamics. The Commandant of NDC, Rear Adm. Murtala Bashir, said it was the tradition of the college to organise a graduation lecture to commemorate the graduation ceremony of each course. Bashir said that Nigeria had faced and still facing several security challenges such as terrorism, banditry, militancy secessionist agitation, kidnapping amongst others in recent times. He said the security challenges were aided in very large measure by illicit arms proliferation and the emergence of cult groupings that engage in banditry, kidnapping, political violence and other mafia-style violent activities. The situation, he said had impacted negatively on the development in the country with attendant implications for national security, adding that Nigeria currently ranks low in the global rating of Human Development Index. The commandant said there was need to think out of the box and develop strategies that would enhance security and national development. He urged the participants of Course 30 to begin to realise that success could only come from carefully cultivated attitudes, commitments and management processes that accrue slowly and steadily. “Imbibing these attributes, could therefore see you contributing positively to the development of the country. “It is not too late for us to begin to build these attributes to move our society forward. “So, I urge you to listen carefully to the lecture and thereafter, self-reflect on how you, your service or your organization can better contribute to society, particularly on the issues surrounding security and development,’’ he said. The graduation lecture is one of the activities lined up for graduation of NDC’s 30th set of graduates as well as its 30th anniversary celebration.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA has busted and dismantled two major clandestine laboratories in Lagos and Anambra state where dangerous illicit drug, crystal methamphetamine, called meth in local parlance, were produced for distribution across Nigeria and export. NDLEA Director, Media & Advocacy, Femi Babafemi in anpress statement on Tuesday said, the Chairman of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) disclosed this on Tuesday 2nd August 2022 when he addressed the media on the development. He said following the outbreak of crystal methamphetamine abuse in the last quarter of 2021, predominantly in the South East and the cry for help from many communities in the region because of the devastating effects the distribution and abuse of the dangerous stimulant drug were having on their youths and others, the Agency deployed all available assets to find the primary source of manufacturing of the drug in Nigeria and arrest the barons behind it. Marwa said while efforts in the past seven months against the cartel behind the Methamphetamine scourge, have led to the arrest of four kingpins and a cook; “now, we have added two barons and another cook. This no doubt is a loud statement to those involved in the criminal illicit drug trade that it’s time for them to quit or risk losing it all; that is losing their freedom, investment and assets acquired through proceeds from the illegal business.” According to him, “I am pleased to inform the public today that, after months of painstaking intelligence gathering, diligent tracking and coordinated offensive action, we recorded a breakthrough on Saturday, July 30, 2022, when officers and men of the Agency successfully busted two methamphetamine manufacturing facilities, called Meth Laboratories. “The first one, located in Victoria Garden City (VGC) Estate of Lekki, Lagos, is owned by a baron, Chris Emeka Nzewi, while the second, in Nise Community of Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State was owned by Paul Ozoemenam. The owners of these two illicit meth laboratories were successfully arrested alongside Sunday Ukah from Aba, Abia State, the cook or chemist that produced the drugs for them. “The laboratory in Lagos was set up inside the Boys’ Quarter building of a four-bedroom duplex. From there, we recovered a total of 258.74 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine and various precursor chemicals used for the production of the toxic drug. The complete paraphernalia of laboratory equipment such as gas cylinders, giant gas burners, industrial face masks, industrial gloves, tubes and flat-bottomed conical flasks, among others were also found.” He said he’s addressing the public about the weekend busts to raise people’s awareness of the danger that meth production constitutes to public health and the modus operandi of the barons involved in the unwholesome activity. He said, “the owner of the laboratory in VGC, for instance, was producing this highly unstable and toxic drug in a house where he lived with his family. This speaks volumes about his insensitivity to the consequences of exposing his family, which includes a three-month old baby, to the danger of hazardous chemicals. If that is the case, that is an indication that public health was of no concern to him. “In this particular case, aside from the laboratory being close to the kitchen of the main house, the waste from the laboratory was channelled into the septic tank and soakaway in the compound, with a high risk of contamination of the water table of the entire neighbourhood. “On average, the lab produced 50 kilos of methamphetamine every week with plans underway to increase the capacity of production to at least 100kg per week. Where do these drugs end? From our preliminary interrogation, we now know the drugs from this lab were both for export and local consumption. We also know there is a supply chain of distributors and buyers for export and the domestic market. “When you consider the fact that the price of this dangerous drug was going for as high as US500, 000 per kilo in the international market in recent time, you will understand why Nzewi cared less to put the lives of his own family at risk by producing this in the same house where they live. Hence, taking these two labs out of operation is a major feat in our continuing effort to curb the meth problem.” The NDLEA boss said the lab busts also exposed the interconnectivity among syndicates involved in meth production, adding that the cook was hired by both producers to produce for the VGC lab, as well as the lab in Anambra. He urged members of the public to be sensitive to their environment. “As we step up the offensive against drug traffickers, we want the public to be more vigilant and be aware of the fact that producers of methamphetamine always choose unsuspecting environments with tight security, like the VGC estate, in this case. And the reason is not far-fetched: They choose secured estates to prevent law enforcement agents from monitoring their activities. They also locate meth labs in remote unsuspecting communities where residents would not be aware of their activities. “It is very important to note that the waste from methamphetamine production is dangerous to the ecosystem. The chemicals are toxic and once they seep into the soil, they contaminate the water table from which surrounding wells and boreholes draw their water. And citizens who unwittingly consume the water from such sources are exposed to heart and kidney ailments and other organ diseases. Neighbours, too, who inhale gases from the lab, are also susceptible to the same risk. What makes it worse is that the production usually takes place in the middle of the night, between 11 pm and 4 am, and therefore, unsuspecting neighbours could have been exposed to the hazards for months or even years.” Marwa commended the professionalism of the intelligence led special units assigned the task. “Our forensic experts and the 200-man strike force team that we deployed who were the operational arm that executed the mission of dismantling the labs, seizing the crystal meth, precursors, paraphernalia and arresting the culprits.” https://www.spyetv.com.ng/2022/08/just-in-ndlea-busts-mkpuru-mmiri-labs.html?m=1

2023 Elections: Nigerian Correctional Service Requests INEC to Extend Voting Rights to Inmates The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has requested the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC to extend voting rights to inmates at the Correctional Service in order to exercise their civil responsibility as a citizen of the country. The Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa ably represented by ACG Daniel Odharo made this request when he led management team on a courtesy visit to the Commission on Tuesday 19th July 2022 in Abuja. The representative asked the Chairman Independent National Electoral Commission INEC for inclusive of inmates in the forth coming General elections. The INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu in his response said INEC is committed to inclusivity, including the rights of immates to vote during elections "as it being done in Africa, Kenya and South Africa have confirmed voting rights on inmates, so already something like that is happening in our continent. Two countries, Kenya and South Africa, have extended that right", he said. Prof Yakubu said the request by the Nigerian Correctional Service to extend voting right to inmates of the correctional service is agreeable in principle, as INEC have no issues with that. He noted how INEC included persons with disability as ad hoc staff during elections, reinstated the Commission's commitment to inclusivity for which reason the Commissioners made elaborate arrangement for persons with disability, we have been providing assisting devices, magnifying glasses, posters for the election day, ballot jackets during elections. INEC boss therefore seek for transparency of the process of including inmates to participate in the 2023 general elections and advise the commision on critical questions. "Will inmates vote outside the prison or inside the prison? Are we going to set-up polling units inside the prison or will the polling units outside? We believe that some of them are already registered voters. The majority of them actually awaiting trial, so they may not be registered voters if they are registered voters, there can't be registered. What they will do is to transfer their registration. Will they transfer their registration to the correctional centres?" Will political parties be allowed to campaign inside the correctional centres? This a matter that you need to advise the Commission. Will observers and media be allowed access to the correctional centres on Election Day? Will INEC officials be granted access to the correctional centres for voter education? This a matter that we need to discuss. Will election hold in all 218 federal correctional centres currently holding invest nationwide? Or there are some correctional centres where this process can start instead of all the 218? Professor Yakubu said these are some of the issues that Nigerian Correctional Service need to carefully discuss and resolve before a decision is taken by INEC. https://www.spyetv.com.ng/2022/07/2023-elections-nigerian-correctional.html?m=1

What a Shame! You Want to Create Bad Blood Between Service Personnel - Military Lashes Femi Fani-Kayode Over Allegations The Military says, a viral video produced by Mr Femi Fani-Kayode, wherein he made wild and unsubstantiated allegations against the Armed Forces of Nigeria, regarding the recent spate of terrorist attacks particularly, the attack of the prison in Kuje - Abuja on 5 July 2022 is an attempt to smear the military and create bad blood between service personnel and the military high command. Director Defence Information, Major General Jimmy Akpor in a statement made available to SpyeTV described Femi Fani-Kayode's allegations shameful and merely playing to the gallery and not in any position to know whether the DSS notified the military of any attack or not. General Akpor explained that, ordinarily the video and its maker would have been ignored, considering the antecedents of the person behind it as a known Rabble-Rouser. "However, in the interest of members of the public who might be misled by the deliberate falsehood and the sensibilities of service personnel and their families who have been paying dearly to keep Nigerians safe, it has become urgent to respond to the video currently circulating in the social media", he said. He said among other allegations, Mr Femi Fani-Kayode claimed that the Department of State Security (DSS) informed the military about the impending attack on Kuje Custodial Centre and even the previous attack on the Kaduna - Abuja rail service. General Akpor said, he also claimed that soldiers were withdrawn shortly before the prison attack. "In all these allegations, Mr Kayode is merely playing to the gallery. He is not in any position to know whether the DSS notified the military of any attack or not. "It may not be impossible that such a claim is part of a calculated attempt to cause division and rivalry amongst all Government Agencies that have been working collaboratively in addressing issues of insecurity in the country. "The claim that soldiers were withdrawn from the Kuje Correctional Custodial Centre before the attack is laughable. It is sad that Mr Kayode is ignorant of whose responsibility it to guard prison. General Akpor noted that,Femi Kayode further claimed that the military took no action on the recent Shiroro terrorists’ attack, which resulted in the unfortunate death of some soldiers, some policemen and members of the public. According to Defence HQ spokesperson, Femi Fani-Kayode's video is a despicable statement that dishonours the sacrifices of the gallant officers and soldiers that paid the supreme price whilst responding in defence of the civilians and the mining community. "What a shame! Mr Kayode is encouraged to pay more attention to the weekly briefs by Defence Media Operations. Defence Media Operations gives weekly briefs/updates on operations being conducted across the country; press releases on military operations are also made when the need arises. He also advised Fani-Kayode to refresh himself on the constitutional roles of the Armed Forces of Nigeria. In all, subordination to civil authority, is key. It is pertinent to state that, the Nigerian Armed Forces has toiled to sustain and nurture our democracy, hence the same military cannot contemplate a coup de tat, as alluded to by Mr Kayode in his video. Defence spokesperson said, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Lucky Irabor has always stressed the unalloyed loyalty of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to the President, Commander-in-Chief and the Nigerian Constitution. Accordingly, as the 2023 General Elections approach, desperate persons must depart from their evil ways, for never again would they lure the military into their wicked machinations. If a confession must be made, Nigerians must know now: the military is always the worse victim of military rule. Finally, in a miserable attempt to malign the leadership of the military, Mr Kayode gave the impression that, while junior military commanders and non-commissioned officers are working hard, senior commanders are doing nothing. This is sheer ignorance and nothing more. Mr Kayode is completely oblivious of the fact that in the military, orders, instructions and directives are issued from the hierarchy to the lower rungs of command. Therefore, junior commanders cannot be working hard while their superiors are idle. This is indeed a difficult time for the Armed Forces of Nigeria and Nigerians as a whole. It is not time for attention-seeking individuals to cause needless distractions. Major General Akpor therefore urged Nigerians to ignore Femi Fani-Kayode and continue to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly to law enforcement agencies.
