For going ahead with his book presenta­tion against a sub­sisting court order, former President Olusegun Obasanjo risks jail term as the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has summoned him to explain why he should not be punished.

The trial judge, Justice Val­entine Ashi, categorically said Obasanjo was in contempt of court for flouting its order re­straining him from among oth­ers, publishing his autobiogra­phy, “My Watch.”

In his ruling yesterday, the judge gave Obasanjo 21 days from the day of service of the court’s order on him to show cause why he should not be punished for contempt for go­ing ahead to publish the book in spite of the interim order made by the court on Decem­ber 5 and a pending libel suit against the former president.

The court had restrained Obasanjo from further publish­ing, printing or offering My Watch for sale and fixed De­cember 10 as return date.

Despite the court’s interim order, Obasanjo reportedly made public presentation of the book on Tuesday in Lagos, arguing that the book had been published before the court was misled into making the orders.

At yesterday’s proceed­ings, the judge took arguments from lawyer to the plaintiff/ applicant, Alex Iziyon (SAN) and defendant/respondent’s lawyer, Realwon Okpanach on the plaintiff’s motion for inter­locutory injunction, the defen­dant’s counter-affidavit and motion to vacate the interim orders earlier granted.

Ruling, Justice Ashi held that it was wrong for Obasanjo to have proceeded to publish the book despite the fact that a libel suit, which subject mat­ter formed part of the contents of the book, was pending be­fore the court and the order he made on December 5 was still subsisting.

He further held that it was immaterial that the book was published before the interim order was made. He said Obasanjo ought not to have published the book because he was aware of the part-heard libel suit over a letter he wrote to President Goodluck Jona­than, accusing a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Buruji Kashamu of being a fugitive wanted in the United States.

“The fact that the book was published in November is irrel­evant. As long as the substan­tive suit is not yet determined, no party is entitled to publish or comment on material facts that are yet to be decided on by the court.

“I hold the defendant not only in contempt of the court, but to show cause why he should not be punished for contempt and ordered to undo what he has wrongly done,” Justice Ashi held.

The PDP had dragged Tambuwal to court, asking the court to mandate him to declare his seat vacant and vacate his position as Speaker following his defect to the APC.

The Anyiam-Osigwe family has confirmed the death of the Co-ordinator General of the Anyiam-Osigwe Foundation and a member of its Board of Trustees of the foundation.

Identified as Michael, the Coordinator of the foundation was allegedly killed by robbers around the Okada and Benin area of Edo State.

Reports say Michael was shot by armed robbers on Saturday and died on Sunday after efforts to keep him alive failed.

A statement by one of his six brothers, Charles, said his rites of passage would be announced in due course.

The statement reads in full: “With grief and deep sense of sorrow, but with total submission to the will of the Almighty God who gives and recalls, the Anyiam-Osigwe family announce the untimely passing to Eternal Glory of Nze Michael Anyiam-Osigwe.

“Michael was demised at the hands of armed robbers who operated along the Ore-Benin Road near the Okada Junction in the afternoon of 29th November 2014 at about 2.30pm.

“Up until his shocking and painful demise, Nze Michael Anyiam-Osigwe was the Co-ordinator General of the Osigwe Anyiam-Osigwe Foundation and a member of its Board of Trustees. He was also a Director of the Africa Institute for Leadership Research and Development, South Africa as well as the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Malawi to Nigeria. He was also the Executive Director within the Anyiam-Osigwe Consortium of Companies. He studied Economics and obtained a joint Masters Degree in Social Anthropology and Musicology from Goldsmiths College, University of London

“He is survived by his mother Chief Dorothy Anyiam-osigwe (OON), his wife, Okiemute Anyiam-Osigwe, five lovely children, six brothers and a sister, nieces and nephews and a host of other relations.

“In due course, his rights of passage would be announced by the Family.

“May his gentle Soul rest in Perfect Peace.”

The 9th edition of the Nigeria Music Video Awards (NMVA) 2014 was held yesterday, 26th November at the Convention centre, Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island.

MRS. DIEZANI ALISON-MADUEKE was born in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to the family of His Royal Majesty, Frederick Abiye and Chief Beatrice Agama from Bayelsa State Nigeria. 

  She studied in Nigeria and the United Kingdom and the United States.  She began her working career  as  an architect at Charles Szoradi Architects, moving through jobs in construction and facilities management.

  In 1992, Alison-Madueke joined Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) as the Head of the Project Unit of the Estate Development Division in Lagos, moving to the External Affairs Directorate as Head of the newly instituted Corporate Issues Identification and Management Department.

  In 2002, she was awarded the prestigious British Foreign and Commonwealth Chevening Scholarship and proceeded  to the Judge Business Institute, Cambridge University UK, where she obtained an MBA in 2003.

  In 2006, in recognition of her record of excellence,  Alison-Madueke was appointed the first female director to the board of Shell, as External Affairs Director, making her the first female to be so appointed in 70 years of the company’s business practice in Nigeria.

   She has held three significant federal cabinet positions since 2007. These are Minister of Transportation from  2007 to 2008;  and Minister of Mines and Steel Development  from 2008 to  2010.   She has been  Nigeria’s first female Minister of Petroleum Resources from 2010 till date.  

  She   is the first and only woman to lead a country’s delegation to OPEC conference in Vienna, Austria. She was also the first woman to be awarded an honourary doctorate in management sciences by the nation’s premier defence college, the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, on September 17, 2011.

  Alison-Madueke is  married  to  Rear Admiral Alison Madueke (rtd). They have children and grandchildren.

Her milestones as petroleum minister

SOME of the major achievements of the Petroleum Ministry under her watch include rehabilitating  previous non-functioning petroleum product deports and pipelines including the  Warri- Benin pipeline; and  the Benin , Enugu, Gombe and Port Harcourt deports. She   restored product supply to facilities  and  totally  rebuilt  the burnt down Okirika product loading jetty.

  She engineered the comprehensive re-draft of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) that is currently undergoing legislative process in the National Assembly and when passed into law shall be the first of its kind in terms of coverage and sweeping reforms.

  She completed over 307KM of critical backbone pipeline infrastructure which includes Itoki-Olorunshogo, Escravos-Warri-Oben, Imo River-Alaoji and Oben-Geregegu.

  The minister kicked off 1,860KM of ongoing gas pipeline infrastructure comprising: Oben-Lagos, Obiafo-Obrikom-Oben (0B3) and Calabar-Ajaokuta-Kano.

  She also commenced Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) of the 850MCF/D gas processing facility to support domestic supply of gas to power the Ogidigben Industrial park.

  Alison-Madueke initiated a critical gas flare-down campaign which in 12 years has seen gas flaring reduced by 20 per cent to an approximate 16.7%of produced gas.

  She maximized local value addition by encouraging the manufacturing of equipment component and parts in the country in furtherance of the Nigeria Content Act 2010.

  She successfully introduced compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to Nigeria with over 2500 taxi cabs now running in Benin City and many more being converted daily and celebrated NLG’s export of its 3000th Cargo.

Numerous travails 

From the outset of her appointment as a minister in 2007, she faced  a series of summonses from the National Assembly over one problem or another, all of which she was able to overcome. 

  Not long ago, the House of Representatives summoned Alison-Madueke, should the NNPC fail to tender documents relating to her N10 billion private jet expenses.

 Alison-Madueke was allegedly accused of spending billions of naira on private jets. 

  There was also an allegation of missing $20 billion oil funds of which she was later cleared .

 The Senate Committee on Finance later revealed that no money was missing, contrary to the claim of former Central Bank Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi . 

   By the time a Senate committee commenced an investigation into the matter, Sanusi made a u-turn on the said amount when he dramatically claimed that it was $10 billion and not $49.8b that was missing. 

  The Federal Government’s decision not to probe the minister was attributed to the fact that Alison-Madueke is not just only an in-law to the president but also from the same state.

  The presidency denied this, saying :“The Federal Government cannot set up a probe panel just on things that have not been substantiated as such. The information I have is that the House of Representatives is looking into the matter and they want to invite the honourable minister. Definitely, the right thing is to wait for the outcome of such an interaction before anybody can decide to do anything.”

Minister’s challenges 

AS the minister of petroleum resources in Nigeria, she has to battle to handle different challenges, which are not investor-friendly.  Such challenges include cost of environmental remediation from years of militancy and pipeline vandalism long before her time; maintaining the level of government investment in oil and gas while meeting pressing social needs; funding required to achieve gas flare-out is significant and grows with increased oil production; ageing oil production facilities built in the early and mid-seventies requiring modernisation; building indigenous technology capability in complex deep water environments; indigenous participation and the pace of human capacity development and crude oil and petroleum product theft.

  Crude oil theft has been a major challenge for the minister, which at a time she described as another face of terrorism.

  According to her, the grave phenomenon of oil theft and its global support system represents another face of terrorism, which has continued to remain an obstacle to the nation’s high economic growth trajectory.

Stakeholders pay tributes

THE Chairman, Society for Petroleum Explorationists (SPE), Emeka Ene, congratulated Nigeria on the feat, describing it as a very positive development for the country. 

   “The appointment has again, put Nigeria on the world stage and in a position of leadership at a time when there is a lot of uncertainty in the global oil and gas market. It is expected that the minister will bring a new perspective to the global stage, with the experience she has deployed managing a very critical oil and gas industry in Nigeria.”

   Ene who is also the Chairman of the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria, (PETAN), said: “It would project Nigeria in a very positive light and will also strategically position our energy sector to be further competitive in the international market.

  “I think it’s a major milestone. Don’t forget that leadership has no gender, and what we find out is that historically, female leaders come at a very turbulent time and have always brought a new perspective, and long-term solutions to problems that have been intractable. So we will have to support her as a country and I believe it’s an opportunity to showcase our talents, just as the late Riliwan Lukman did, as the OPEC secretary.”

   The Managing Director, Danvic Concept, Afe Mayowa: said: “Congratulations to Nigeria. I think it is another way of appreciating us  and  the role we play in the whole world. This is far away from all the reports on corruption that we have been getting. On behalf of our association, and as a past president of National Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) I want to particularly extend our heartfelt congratulations to the oil and gas sector and the president for this recognition by OPEC. It is good for us as a country, because it is something that we have been looking forwards to.”

 On the falling crude prices, Mayowa advised the new OPEC president : “The fall in crude oil prices is a big challenge for her. But one thing she should solidly do is to make sure that OPEC does not regret that they have a woman as the president. There is no better time to prove it than now. She should make a difference and work with her team to stabilise oil prices.

 “The fall in crude prices has elicited concerns by many countries and if she can put all measures in place to stabilise the price, she would have given a place to women on the global scene.”

  The Programme Manager, Nigerian Natural Resource Charter (NNRC), Ademola Oshodi, said: “The appointment really is the furtherance of the interest of Nigerians in general. Obviously, she is a controversial figure within an equally controversial sector. The appointment should not cloud the difficult period OPEC is going through with the huge fall in oil prices, and immense challenges facing the Nigerian economy. The urgency to diversify the economy cannot also be understated.”

The only degree of its kind in the country, and let’s face it, the world, you’ll be taking courses in pro shop operations, lane maintenance and responsible alcohol service to break into this market that may or may not be booming.

5. Bassoon

Not much to say here. It’s the bassoon, that 19th century woodwind that sounds like a foghorn, probably humanity’s most under-appreciated instrument next to the vibraphone. U of Arizona will take you from bedroom bassoonist to chamber bassoonist in their bassoon music stream.

6. Adventure

Unlike firefighting, we probably would’ve stuck with this one if we knew about it twenty years ago. Most kids know they’d make a totally awesome adventurer and it’s a shame most of them end up selling out (like Tom Hanks almost did in Big). Redeeming the masses are those brave enrollees in Fleming College’s two-year program in Outdoor and Adventure Education.

7. Bakery Science

When we think bakeries, we imagine pleasant smells floating from warm, soft creations of family-owned kitchens with ancestral cooking instincts. But at Kansas State University, bakers practice cold hard science with state of the art technology, and study the logistics of highly capitalized, profitable baking industries of the 21st century. Things just aren’t the same these days. Choose from production management or cereal chemistry — a baker’s businessman, or a baker with a beaker.

8. Comedy

Who says you can’t learn to be funny? Toronto’s Humber College gives aspiring humour scientists a chance to hone their stand-up, improv, scriptwriting and sketch comedy while learning about the commercial side of the arts and entertainment industry. Presumably, you won’t be presenting a thesis and defending it to an academic committee; you’ll take stage in Humber’s fully equipped comedy cabaret, and strike down academic hecklers.

9. Cannabis Cultivation 

This is not a program but an entire college — a Cannabis College — operating out of Oakland, California (where else?). Oaksterdam University teaches dispensary management, “budtending”, cannabis law, cannabis cooking, cannabis economics and pretty much every other useful study prefixed by cannabis. With the legalization movement in the United States, enrolling might just be most useful career investment you’ll make.

10. Parapsychology

The University of Edinburgh offers the Ouija board of educations, a 3-year doctorate in the psychology of the paranormal. Perform intensive research into people’s claims of paranormal abilities, and try, if you dare, to explain them beyond “they are very confused”.

11. Decisions

For a lowly human, decision-making seems simple: Hungry — eat. But if we had to be conscious of the complex biology underlying everything we do, we’d probably be inclined to sit down and do nothing. In the same way, when the new dominant organism on the planet, the bureaucracy-corporation, wants to make a simple choice like acquire chairs for the board room, it takes a tremendous amount of work from its subordinate nodes: we working professionals. Enter Indiana University’s Decision Sciences program, preparing students for the infinitely complex task of making businesses do things and stuff.

12. Nannying

If you idolized Marry Poppins growing up, know this: it’s not enough to be compassionate, safe, a good role model or irresistibly British to meet the booming nanny demand of the 21st century. The Professional Nanny Program at Kentucky’s Sullivan University takes 12 months to teach you the Proper Way to clean up and care for snotty youngsters. Learn that baby care, cooking, event planning and indispensable CPR and First Aid.

13. Puppetry

Some people aspire to be the ones pulling all the strings – others will keep busy with puppet making, scriptwriting and advanced shadow theatre courses at the University of Connecticut’s MA in puppetry. This isn’t a side-note on the theatre studies course calendar; UConn has been offering the program for five decades, ever since their late master puppeteer Frank W. Ballard conceived it in 1964. As they say, live entertainment, in all its forms, will never be in short demand.

14. Chicken Science

“Chicken” has been a popular field for a long time in agricultural North America. From Saskatchewan to Texas, graduate poultry science programs require a rigorous background to pursue research in nutrition, physiology, genetics, and farm management, all under the subject of arguably the most indispensable (and poorly treated) animalian resource, the chicken.

everyone’s got a degree, it’s hardly as valuable as it once was – so maybe it’s time to rethink that old Princeton logic. If you’re looking for credentials that will really make you pop on the job market, luckily there are tons of bizarrely specific programs that most people would never dream of pursuing.

The work these degrees designate is far from conventional, and the appeal of these subjects certainly goes against the growing trend towards “professionalization” in the workforce, where just about every task requires some kind of special license to carry out. Chalk it up to 21st century capitalization of everything. But let’s suspend our cynical ideas of education for a moment and appreciate how these fifteen kooky programs might pave the future economy.


15. The Beatles

At Liverpool Hope University, a day in the life of an MA Beatles student explores topics like the 60s music industry and the fab four’s sound production; after 48 weeks on this long and winding road, they present a final dissertation. Academics have been studying John, Paul, George and Ringo for going on 30 years, and MAs and PhDs in the topic have gained enough interest to constitute full programs at prestigious schools like London University.

The South South governorship screening committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP might have screened out some frontline governorship aspirants on the party’s platform in Rivers State on the premise that they are not PDP members.


Those allegedly screened out from the race for the party’s governorship ticket include Prince Tonye Princewill, Nimi Walson Jack, Bekinbo Dagogo Jack, and Dumo Lulu Briggs.

There had been serious animosity in the race for the party’s governorship ticket since the conclusion of the November 1 ward congresses of the party, with 16 out of the 17 governorship aspirants accusing the leadership of the party in the state and the national leadership appointed electoral and appeal committees of doing the bidding of one of the aspirants,

According to a message sent out by one of the aspirants, Prince Tonye Princewill, the screening committee obeyed the instructions of the former Minister of state, Eduction, Nyesom Wike to disqualify him from contesting for the governor of Rivers State.

The message reads: “Unconfirmed reports have it that the South South screening committee has obeyed Wike’s instruction and disqualified me from contesting for Governor of Rivers State under the platform of PDP.

“Reason? I am not a PDP member. If this decision is true, this marks a new low in our state’s politics. Will confirm for sure later today, but our sources are pretty reliable. My options now are to appeal, quit politics altogether, stay in the PDP or go to another party (not APC) and run for Governor. While I ponder these options, your opinions are not only welcome, they are essential. If you decide that I should not run, all previous contributions for funds will be returned in full. You can count on that.

“In addition to disqualifying me, Nimi Walson Jack, Bekinbo Dagogo Jack and Dumo Lulu Briggs were also disqualified, just to mention a few. The writing is on the wall. A sad day for internal democracy. What are they afraid of? Is PDP in Rivers state not working for APC?” Princewill said.

It will be recalled that the state chairman of the PDP had threatened to sanction any of the aspirants that speak critically of the party in the state after the aspirants continuously complained of the unwholesome manner the leadership of the party in the state had been handling things.

A source close to Princewill Campaign team confirmed the disqualification of Princewill alongside some of the major contenders to DAILY POST on phone.

He said: “Yes, from all indications, Prince Tonye Princewill and some other major contenders against Wike were all disqualified. These are formidable aspirants that were disqualified on some kind of frivolous and ridiculous reasons, that they are not party members.

“I wonder how somebody who has been participating in the party’s activities and donating money to the party can be called a non-member. In 2011, he was the single highest donor to the party; he donated over N500,000,000 {five hundred million} to the party. In 2012, he built a media centre for the party. How can you now say such a person is not a member of that same party?” the source asked.

Speaking on the next line of action of the Tonye Princewill, the source said the aspirant is still consulting and that they will have to explore all necessary options open to them, including appealing.

“He is still consulting because we want to explore all options including appealing. What is happening in Rivers State PDP is something that portends great danger for the party. I wonder what Wike is afraid of because he is certainly behind this”.

On the possibility of Princewill defecting to the All Progressives Congress, APC, the source said the opposition party is not an option for Princewill because he is deeply committed to the re-election cause of President Goodluck Jonathan. He said he is still consulting and reaching out to party leaders.

Speaking to DAILY POST on phone, Prince Tonye Princewill said; “it is a ridiculous development, but we have options available to us. We are asking our followers, friends and family to let us know what they think should be done.
