The heated rivalry between the APC and the PDP in the build up to the 2015 general elections has continued to trigger serious concerns amongst many Nigerians. However, with news just reaching us indicating that President Goodluck Jonathan will this morning meet with the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) in a move to sign another peace accord, Nigerians might be in line to witness a violence-free election on Saturday, March 28. The president yesterday, expressed his readiness to meet and sign another peace accord with Gen. Muhammadu Buhari. He stated this in a meeting with former head of state, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd); Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar and other members of the National Committee on Peaceful Elections over issues bordering on the 2015 general elections. According to President Jonathan, his willingness to sign another peace pact further emphasizes his total commitment to a violence-free election on Saturday. President Jonathan and General Buhari are scheduled to meet at Ladi Kwali Hall of Sheraton Hotel in Abuja this morning, March 26. Naij.com will keep you posted as more development unfold. http://www.naij.com/409368-jonathan-set-to-hold-talks-with-buhari-at-the-11th-hour.html |

Most of those in the group drive tankers of petrol, diesel or kerosene to and from Maiduguri - the city at the heart of the Islamist insurgency in the north-east and the capital of Borno state. Gathered at the Ogbere Trailer Park, about 50km (30 miles) north of Lagos, they say they have all been affected by the six-year conflict. "We are all concerned about the situation, we have all lost relatives, wives and children are kidnapped and houses have been burnt," says Atiku Abubakar. Speaking in Hausa, he and his colleagues describe the perils of the route to and from Lagos. It takes two and a half days when a tanker is empty and four and a half days when full. They say it is dangerous enough without the militants to contend with as there are so many potholes. "Ten of my colleagues who ply this route have been killed in the last three weeks," says Mr Abubakar. "The militants stopped them and cut off their heads with an electric chainsaw and burned the trucks," he says. "Boko Haram is usually only interested in commandeering smaller vehicles, sometimes the fighters will take the lorries, but most of the time they burn them." Another truck driver chips in to say that if a driver looks "powerful" he may be kidnapped and conscripted as a fighter, but anyone looking "weak" will definitely "lose his head". "If you reach Damaturu by five in the afternoon, you dare not continue on the final leg to Maiduguri," he says, explaining that a driver may not manage the last 130km before the sun sets, when they would be most vulnerable to attack. 'Too traumatised' The drivers tend to work for an owner who has about 20 tankers - each vehicle also has about two assistants to help with loading and guarding the cargo, known as motor boys. As the drivers and motor boys ease into the conversation they begin to open up about how the insurgency has directly affected them. Driver Trap Bukar says he was in the town of Bama when it was captured by Boko Haram last September. "It started early in the morning. Suddenly they came. There was shooting, in my presence I saw four people go down; the soldiers fled," he says. He lifts up his shirt to show what look like bullet scars on his upper torso "I could tell you many unhappy tales," he says, with tears in his eyes. But he suddenly gets up and leaves the group and his colleagues say he is too traumatised by his memories to continue. Kullima Ali, 18, who has been a motor boy for four years, says he is now his family's only bread winner. He says it is very difficult to tell the militants from soldiers, as they dress in camouflage - with only their eyes visible. "They stole some food, killed my two brothers and burned our house in Maiduguri in January 2013," he says. "There's only my mother and my sister now." He says he had wanted to go and study science, but he is unable to afford to continue his education. 'Scared' "Many of the drivers have good qualifications," says Umar Hussaini, 18, a motor boy who helps his driver brother. He introduces me to Ibrahim Abdullahi, 25, a former university student who had been studying civil engineering at the start of insurgency. He has been working as a trucker for the last five years as there are few other employment opportunities for young men, especially in the areas affected by the conflict. "Yes I am scared, if there was other work I would find another job," says Mr Abdullahi. All the truckers express anger about the six-week postponement of the 14 February presidential election and are vocal in their criticism of President Goodluck Jonathan's handling of the conflict. Some even refer to him as "the chairman of Boko Haram" - seeing him as complicit in the group's growth over the years. Others say his complicity lies in his neglect of north-east. "President Jonathan is just as guilty as those Boko Haram killers because he has chopped off all the money to repair the roads," Mr Abubakar says. Life is now a constant financial struggle for them, he adds. For each trip, a driver gets a 10,000 naira ($50, £33) living allowance but this might have to last for several weeks as he waits at Ogbere Trailer Park for clearance to go into Lagos port to collect cargo. Most of the truckers get a monthly salary of between $100 and $200 and the motor boys receive $2.50 a day. Saleh Mohamed, a driver who has just arrived back from Lagos port with his shipment of petrol, sits down with the group under the porch looking exhausted. "I spent four days in the queue in the traffic to the port - I haven't slept for four nights because I had to watch out for thieves as they remove parts from the vehicle or steal the gas," he says. But he is only taking a short break of a couple of hours as he is anxious to put the coming dangers behind him. "The killings are too much and have been going on for too long," says his colleague Mr Abubakar. "President Jonathan is not doing anything. We hope he will leave - we want change." http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-31533391 To see full images

Scientists have unearthed the jawbone of what they claim is one of the very first humans. The 2.8 million-year-old specimen is 400,000 years older than researchers thought that our kind first emerged. The discovery in Ethiopia suggests climate change spurred the transition from tree dweller to upright walker. The head of the research team told BBC News that the find gives the first insight into "the most important transitions in human evolution". Prof Brian Villmoare of the University of Nevada in Las Vegas said the discovery makes a clear link between an iconic 3.2 million-year-old hominin (human-like primate) discovered in the same area in 1974, called "Lucy". Could Lucy's kind - which belonged to the species Australopithecus afarensis - have evolved into the very first primitive humans? "That's what we are arguing," said Prof Villmoare. But the fossil record between the time period when Lucy and her kin were alive and the emergence of Homo erectus (with its relatively large brain and humanlike body proportions) two million years ago is sparse. The 2.8 million-year-old lower jawbone was found in the Ledi-Geraru research area, Afar Regional State, by Ethiopian student Chalachew Seyoum. He told BBC News that he was "stunned" when he saw the fossil. "The moment I found it, I realised that it was important, as this is the time period represented by few (human) fossils in Eastern Africa." The fossil is of the left side of the lower jaw, along with five teeth. The back molar teeth are smaller than those of other hominins living in the area and are one of the features that distinguish humans from more primitive ancestors, according to Professor William Kimbel, director of Arizona State University's Institute of Human Origins. "Previously, the oldest fossil attributed to the genus Homo was an upper jaw from Hadar, Ethiopia, dated to 2.35m years ago," he told BBC News. "So this new discovery pushes the human line back by 400,000 years or so, very close to its likely (pre-human) ancestor. Its mix of primitive and advanced features makes the Ledi jaw a good transitional form between (Lucy) and later humans." A computer reconstruction of a skull belonging to the species Homo habilis, which has been published in Nature journal, indicates that it may well have been the evolutionary descendant of the species announced today. The researcher involved, Prof Fred Spoor of University College London told BBC News that, taken together, the new findings had lifted a veil on a key period in the evolution of our species. "By discovering a new fossil and re-analysing an old one we have truly contributed to our knowledge of our own evolutionary period, stretching over a million years that had been shrouded in mystery," he said. Climate change The dating of the jawbone might help answer one of the key questions in human evolution. What caused some primitive ancestors to climb down from the trees and make their homes on the ground. A separate study in Science hints that a change in climate might have been a factor. An analysis of the fossilised plant and animal life in the area suggests that what had once been lush forest had become dry grassland. As the trees made way for vast plains, ancient human-like primates found a way of exploiting the new environmental niche, developing bigger brains and becoming less reliant on having big jaws and teeth by using tools. Prof Chris Stringer of the Natural History Museum in London described the discovery as a "big story". He says the new species clearly does show the earliest step toward human characteristics, but suggests that half a jawbone is not enough to tell just how human it was and does not provide enough evidence to suggest that it was this line that led to us. He notes that the emergence of human-like characteristics was not unique to Ethiopia. "The human-like features shown by Australopithecus sediba in South Africa at around 1.95 million years ago are likely to have developed independently of the processes which produced (humans) in East Africa, showing that parallel origins are a distinct possibility," Prof Stringer explained. This would suggest several different species of humans co-existing in Africa around two million years ago with only one of them surviving and eventually evolving into our species, Homo sapiens. It is as if nature was experimenting with different versions of the same evolutionary configuration until one succeeded. Prof Stringer added: "These new studies leave us with an even more complex picture of early humans than we thought, and they challenge us to consider the very definition of what it is to be human. Are we defined by our small teeth and jaws, our large brain, our long legs, tool-making, or some combination of these traits?" http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-31718336

He is one of Nigeria’s oldest actors and he’s still very strong in the industry. Veteran Nollywood actor, Kenneth Okonkwo has slammed reports that his political ambition is derailing his Nollywood career. The actor who is Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Representative aspirant for Nsukka/Igboeze-South Federal Constituency in Enugu State, revealed this in an interview with Daily Independent Nigeria. He said: – “I still act movies; joining politics will not stop me from acting because it is acting that gave me popularity and recognition.I discovered that my people are looking unto me to solve their problems and there is a limit my personal resources can do in solving these problems, that is why I joined politics. To me, politics is not a do or die affair. I believe that if I did not make it this year, I will make it in future.’’ http://www.informationng.com/2015/02/kenneth-okonkwo-politics-wont-stop-me-from-acting.html

The Lagos State government has ordered the closure of all markets in the state today, to enable market men and women to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVC). The order followed Friday’s public holiday, which was aimed at ensuring workers in the state obtain their PVCs in time for the first round of elections on Feb. 14. The state government had also appealed to the private sector in the state to grant their workers half day on Friday to enable them collect their voters’ card. However, only a few private establishments granted the request. The collection of the PVCs ends tomorrow. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is expected to announce its final decision on whether the elections will continue as scheduled today. The Council of State had earlier, in its meeting discussed the pros and cons of postponing the elections as suggested in some quarters. However, the Council noted that INEC reserves the right to either postpone or go ahead with the elections as planned. Although a postponement does not look likely, if it happens, the commission may add more days for the collection of PVCs. going ahead with the conduct of the general elections on February 14 and 28. http://www.informationng.com/2015/02/lagos-shuts-markets-over-pvc-collection.html |
President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Abdulwahed Omar was today attacked by subscribers to the failed housing project by the union. Omar, who was at the entrance of the Shehu Musa Yar’adua centre, the venue of the debate, was met by the subscribers carrying placards demanding refund of monies paid for the project, which ranged from about N433,000 to N1.7m, the 10 percent deposit requirement for different categories of houses. He left hurriedly due to increasing noise and restiveness of the protesters. David Oluwole, who spoke on behalf of the protesters, accused NLC of deceit. He put the total debt owed to about 3,800 subscribers, as over N4 billion. “It is disgusting and shocking that the NLC that is supposed to be on the side of Nigerian workers has dragged its own name into the mud, they promised affordable housing, it was over-subscribed because the NLC was involved.” He noted that many of the subscribers had to borrow money from the bank and from cooperative societies to ensure payment of the required 10 percent. “They promised us the keys by December 2014. We did not see any land or houses and subscribers began to demand for their money. If you enter a partnership and you fail, and the other party is asking for refund, not even with interest, and NLC keeps saying this money is intact, who are they saving it for?” he queried. He therefore demanded a commitment ahead of the delegate conference of the NLC, which starts on Monday, where Omar would step down as NLC president following the completion of two tenures (from 2007 to 2015). Pleading with the protesters, a Vice President of the NLC, Issa Aremu, assured that they would get their money back. “An injury to one is an injury to all. If this has happened to you, the NLC should be the one to lead the protest. I am aware of this problem, I feel so disgusted and disgraced. I am pained that this is happening in the name of the NLC. Your fight is legitimate, if we are guilty or privy to denying you your money, we would not be here, so the burden is on us to get the money back. Before our delegate conference, there must be firm commitment on this money. I am on tape and on honour, so I assure you that if they do not get the money, I will join you to lead the protest,” he assured. http://www.informationng.com/2015/02/housing-scam-nlc-president-absconds-as-protesters-demand-refund.html

A major newspaper agent, Mrs Funlayo Ajayi, who was kidnapped on Monday in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, by four gunmen had been released by her captors. She was said to have been released on Wednesday, two days after her abduction. Her abductors dropped her off close to Muslim Comprehensive High School, Imepe, Ijebu Ode, around 9pm. Our correspondent gathered that a ransom was paid in the afternoon, which finally led to her release in the evening. Ajayi is currently under medical observation at an undisclosed hospital in Ijebu Ode. In an interview with our correspondent on the telephone on Thursday, she confirmed that a ransom was paid by her family members and associates but refused to disclose the amount. She said she was grateful to God for returning alive, as some of his abductors threatened to cut off her head, and other vital parts for ritual purposes. She said, “I am grateful to God that I returned alive. For the two days I was in their enclave, inside the bush, I was blindfolded. “In the morning, they would take me uphill, and later, they would bring me downhill. Some of them will say I am good mama, they should not maltreat me. Some of them would use cutlasses to scratch the ground, threatening that they would cut off my head and other vital parts for ritual.” Ajayi, said he never ate the food she was offered and later fainted. She explained that the forest, where she was detained, was quite remote to any village or town. “I could only hear the sound of loggers, cutting trees in the forest, and aircraft flying past almost at regular intervals of one hour,” she added. |

It was a busy day for some Nigerian players in the various leagues in Europe as the January Transfer Window closed on Monday. The biggest move involving a Nigerian was with English Championship side, Reading FC, as a former Super Eagles forward, Yakubu Aiyegbeni joined the club. The deal was sealed on a free transfer till the end of the season. According to the club’s official website, the 32-year-old, who last played for Qatari side, Al Rayyan, was given the jersey number 20 and will be eligible to play in the club’s next match against Wolvehampton Wanderers this weekend provided all clearances are completed. Club manager, Steve Clarke, told the club’s website, “An experienced goalscorer, Yakubu brings a fantastic scoring record to this club and his addition will complement the strikers we’ve already got at Reading and help us to improve as a team in latter stages of the season. “I know all about him as a player and I have heard very good reports about him as a personality in the dressing room. He is no-risk signing for us and I look forward to him scoring goals for Reading Football Club.” Yakubu is the highest ever scoring African in England with 138 goals from 346 appearances, 96 of which were scored in the English Premier League. He scored three goals in eight appearances for Al Rayyan and will join fellow Nigerian, Hope Akpan, as Reading move to beat relegation. While Yakubu was moving from Qatar to England, West Bromwich Albion’s club record signing, Brown Ideye, was on the verge of making a move to Qatari side, Al Gharafa, as at press time. The £10m player, who obviously arrived in England with the wrong scoring boots, has scored only a goal in the league since joining Albion in the summer. On deadline day, another Nigerian winger, Sheyi Ojo, also joined Wigan Athletic on loan from Liverpool until the end of the season. The 17-year-old, who did not make a first team appearance for the Reds since he joined Liverpool from MK Dons in 2011, told the club’s website that he hoped to make an impact at his new club. Tottenham Hotspur were also on the trail of MK Dons’ forward, Dele Alli, as of press time. The 18-year-old, who has been touted to be the new Steven Gerard, was being courted by Newcastle United and Aston Villa for a fee of about £7m. Some other deadline moves saw Wilfried Zaha rejoining Crystal Palace from Manchester United for an undisclosed fee for five and half years. Chelsea’s Andre Schurrle joined Wolfsburg for £24.2m, while the club got the signature of Colombian international Juan Cuadrado from Fiorentina for £27m. The Blues also loaned out Mohamed Salah to Fiorentina till the end of the season with an option to buy him if he impresses. http://www.punchng.com/sports/yakubu-joins-reading-ideye-to-qatar/

1. Epidermodysplasia Verruciformis Informally known as Tree Man Illness, this rare skin condition is characterized by an abnormal susceptibility to human papillomaviruses. The uncontrolled HPV infections cause large, scaly, tree-bark-like warts to form on the body, particularly on the hands and feet. The condition usually appears between the ages of 1-20. The public first took notice of the disease in 2007, when photos of Dede Koswara surfaced on the Internet. Koswara was also featured on the Discovery Channel and Learning Channel, and in 2008 he had 4-pounds of macules and papules surgically removed. Nevertheless, the skin disease is aggressive and it is estimated Koswara will need to undergo several surgeries a year to maintain a “somewhat” normal looking appearance.

2. Elephantiasis Elephantiasis, also known as lymphatic filariasis, is the result of a parasitic infection caused by specific kinds of filarial round worms. These threadlike worms are transmitted by mosquitos and block the body’s lymphatic system, leading to the enlargement of the arms, legs, Instruments, and breasts. The blockage forces fluids to collect in the tissues, which causes limbs to swell to disfiguring and disabling proportions. Elephantiasis is found in South and Central America, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and the Caribbean. Roughly 120 million people suffer from the condition. Elephantiasis is also called Barbados leg, elephant leg, and morbus herculeus.
