PoliticsMinisterial Nominee: Akpabio Has No Case To Answer, APC Replies Prof Sagay by State001(op): 3:47pm On Jul 26, 2019
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom has reacted to the controversies trailing the nomination of Senator Godswill Akpabio as Minister by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Igbere TV reports that Prof. Itse Sagay, Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption (PACAC), had said that President Buhari was wrong to have nominated Akpabio over alleged corruption charges against the former governor.

President Muhammadu Buhari had submitted a list of 43 ministerial nominees, which was read at the Senate plenary on Tuesday.

Reacting to the comments by PACAC boss, the APC in a statement sent to Igbere TV by the Publicity Secretary, Nkereuwem Enyongekere, said Senator Akpabio had no case with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

While admitting that a case was initiated against the former Akwa Ibom governor, the party, however, noted that the petitioner had withdrawn the case due to lack of merit.

Full Statement,

“We are surprised by the statement credited to Prof. Itse Sagay, Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption (PACAC) that the President should not have nominated Senator Akpabio as Minister because he has a case with the EFCC.

“The APC in Akwa Ibom state wishes to state categorically that Senator Akpabio does not have any case with the EFCC or any other anti graft agency.

“It is true that a petition was filed against the Senator at the EFCC by an Abuja-based lawyer soon after Senator Akpabio left office as our state Governor in 20I5. These cases were thoroughly investigated by the agency. The Petitioner then withdrew the Petition when he could not substantiate his allegations and the EFCC could not establish the veracity of the allegations in the petition. In that case, we note that Prof. Sagay was patently wrong in his assertion about the nomination of Senator Akpabio.

“APC in Akwa Ibom state wishes to once again congratulate Senator Akpabio on this well deserved nomination and thank the President for choosing a capable and consummate politician and leader as his minister.”

Why in a hurry to bury him?
There are times when justice an truth finding must supercede any Islamic rite.
A forensic autopsy should have been done to unravel the truth of who killed him.
It could be the police,it could be he died from a health issue, that the crisis precipitated, not necessarily from a bullet wound.
This is part of why we are not progressing as a people:no evidence based facts.

PoliticsPhotos Of Channels TV Reporter Who Died From Shiites-Police Clash Gun Injuries by State001(op): 12:16am On Jul 23, 2019
Igbere TV has obtained some pictures of Precious Owolabi, the Channels TV reporter who was shot in the Abuja Shiites-Police clash, Monday.

Some online platforms have reported the late reporter to be a lady. But investigation by Igbere TV, Monday night, showed the reporter to be a male — even though he goes by the name PRECIOUS as first name.

The death of Precious Owolabi was announced during the 10pm news bulletin of Channels TV. Even the presenter who made the announcement could not hold back her tears over the death of such a promising young man.

Igbere TV gathered that the late reporter was an intern at Channels TV and a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, until his death.

Nigerians have taken to social media to berate the TV station for sending an “intern” to cover a violent scene instead of the usual trained professional journalists.

Others have, however, suggested that journalists covering such scenes should be kitted with the necessary tools such as bullet proof, helmet against such reoccurrences.

Late Precious Owolabi was aged 23, and reportedly graduated from a federal university in the South West.

We all at Igbere TV use this medium to send our heartfelt condolence to management and staff of Channels TV and the NYSC over the death of the youngster.

PoliticsPresident Buhari Moves To Proscribe Shiites After Protest That Turned Violent by State001(op): 10:33pm On Jul 22, 2019
EXCLUSIVE: Buhari considers proscription of Shiite IMN in Nigeria

President Muhammadu Buhari is considering the proscription of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), PREMIUM TIMES has learnt from security and administration sources.

The proscription, which is likely to come in form of an executive order, is expected to be made public between tonight and tomorrow, PREMIUM TIMES learnt.
An emergency meeting of security chiefs held at the State House late Monday afternoon, and the conclusion was that the IMN will be declared an illegal organisation in Nigeria.

It is a direct response to the protests that turned violent Monday when members of Shiite IMN took over the streets of central Abuja, the Nigerian capital.
The demonstration was billed as just another instalment of relentless agitation for the release of Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, a foremost Nigerian Shiite cleric who was taken into custody four years ago.

It, however, ended with casualties, including the death of a deputy police commissioner. The IMN said 11 of its members were killed during the violence.
Presidential spokespersons, Femi Adesina and Garba Shehu, did not immediately return requests for comments about the president’s consideration of a Shiite proscription on Monday night.

Mr El-Zakzaky was arrested following an invasion of his residence in Zaria, northern Nigeria, between December 12-14, 2015.

The official death toll of the invasion, which was carried out by Nigerian soldiers in the dead of the night, was 347 for Shi’a adherents. The IMN said the official death toll was grossly downplayed and insisted more than 1,000 of its members were killed in that single attack.

The military said the protesters had attempted to block the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, from the free passage on a highway that runs through the Shi’a headquarters in Zaria in the evening of December 12, 2015, and soldiers had no choice but to open fire when the Shiites became unruly.

The IMN strongly disputed the military’s account, saying its members were peaceful during the encounter.

They also questioned why the Nigerian Army deployed heavily armed soldiers, bulldozers and excavators to demolish both the headquarters and Mr El-Zakzaky’s residence in an operation that lasted two days.
A panel of enquiry constituted by the Kaduna State Government indicted Nigerian Army officers for the massacre, and also recommended the prosecution of some IMN leaders for various offences.

Governor Nasir El-Rufai accepted the conclusions of the judicial panel, but partially implemented its recommendations by proscribing the Shiite movement in Kaduna State.

No action was taken against the military officers indicted by the panel.
A separate investigation into the violence has been ongoing at the United Nations, with preliminary findings revealing that the Nigerian government has questions to answer.

Mr El-Zakzaky and his members have instituted several court cases against the government for his detention, and an order for his release had been handed down by a federal court.

However, the government has been reluctant to obey the order, citing national security and the cleric’s safety.
A few days ago on July 10, federal lawmakers also passed a resolution for the Buhari administration to honour court orders and release the cleric. They expressed fears that Nigeria’s security crisis could get even more complicated if IMN members become radicalised over the prolonged incarceration of their leader and deadly confrontations with security forces.
The cleric was taken away from the public’s view, alongside his wife, Zeenah, who was arrested with him on December 14, 2015.

He was only allowed a brief appearance before television cameras at the headquarters of the State Security Service in Abuja, where he had been detained for the most of his incarceration.

A few months ago, the cleric was transferred to Kaduna and arraigned on criminal charges. But widespread protests for his release continued almost every other day since his arrest.

The protesters have encountered deadly response from Nigerian security forces, which had led to hundreds of deaths.

In October 2018, dozens of Shiites were killed when Nigerian soldiers responded to a procession with live ammunition.
Security agencies, however, denied using disproportionate force, saying the Shiites were the aggressors and they would not be allowed to take over the Nigerian capital and unleash violence on citizens.
Groundwork laid

The Buhari administration has long categorised IMN as a violent group and encourages the use of force to suppress its agitations.

“This proscription will put an end to the madness of Shiites in Nigeria,” one of the official sources who confirmed the discussion on the executive order for proscription told PREMIUM TIMES Monday night.
Another source said Mr Buhari would cite the Terrorism Prevention Act to ban the Shiite movement in Nigeria. The law was introduced under President Goodluck Jonathan to proscribe Boko Haram as a terrorist organisation and intensify the crackdown on its members.

PREMIUM TIMES learnt that the police have concluded that they might not be able to contain Shiite protesters in Abuja any longer. But the administration had now become reluctant to deploy soldiers to crush protests in downtown Abuja because of its negative perception.
Sources said Mr Buhari sympathised with the situation the police have found themselves on the Shiite crisis but was also concerned about what Nigerians would say should he proscribe yet another group for its antagonistic tactics.

“The judgement is called for,” a source said. “But the presidency is probably concerned that people will say: so why not Fulani Herdsmen, too?”
Our sources spoke under anonymity because they were not authorised to disclose the development before a formal announcement by the administration.

If gazetted, the IMN will be the second organisation to be proscribed by Mr Buhari, who assumed office in May 2015 and was declared the winner of a second term this March. The government had declared the separatist Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) a violent group in 2017 and proscribed its activities across Nigeria.

It was not immediately clear how the IMN would respond to its proscription if announced.
A spokesperson for the movement said a decision would be taken after official announcement by the administration

PoliticsPDP Reacts To Supreme Court's Refusal To Revisit Zamfara Election Judgement by State001(op): 5:08pm On Jul 22, 2019
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reacted to the refusal of the Supreme Court to revisit its earlier ruling on Zamfara State election, Igbere TV reports.

The party said the Court’s decision was good for democracy.

In a statement sent to Igbere TV, the PDP mocked the All Progressives Congress (APC) for asking the court to “review and reverse its lawful and well-founded judgment."

Igbere TV reports that the Supreme Court had previously voided the participation of the APC and its candidates in Zamfara State in the last general elections.

The PDP says by the latest decision, “the Court has once again saved our nation from a huge constitutional crisis that could have devastated our constitutional democracy and corporate existence as a nation.”

The PDP described the demand by the APC to the Supreme Court as “blasphemous”, a “blackmail” as well as a “measured landmine” set by APC leaders in their desperation to ambush and destroy the integrity of the apex court.

“The motive of the APC leaders is to ultimately sequester the institution of the judiciary and foist a totalitarian order on our polity.

“It is also instructive to note that by asking the Supreme Court to embark on a journey to nowhere, the APC clearly sought to subvert our democratic system and surreptitiously force on Nigerians, a system that is completely alien to our constitutional democracy and outside the confines and dictates of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

“APC’s demand is a direct threat to our democracy, peace and stability of our nation and shows its unwillingness, as a party, to abide by the rule of law.

“It also exposes APC’s penchant for sowing crisis in our nation; a situation that should be condemned by all", the statement read.

The PDP, therefore, urged Nigerians, institutions of democracy, as well as security agencies to be “cautious” of the APC “as it has shown that it is not committed to the unity and stability of our dear nation.”

PoliticsBuhari Hasn't Change His Office Portrait Despite Asking The Public To Do So (pic by State001(op): 5:46pm On Jul 21, 2019
Igbere TV has been able to establish that President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to change the portrait in his office, despite issuing an order on the new one.

Igbere TV reports that Presidency had last week, approved a new portrait for the President, asking Nigerians to adopt that as the official one.

A statement issued from Office of Secretary to Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, said the portrait should be used in offices and establishments including banks, schools, hospitals etc.

However, findings by Igbere TV revealed that the President still makes use of the old portrait in his office despite approving a new one.

A recent tweet by @NGRPresident similarly showed the old portrait hanging on the wall in his office.

The Presidency had attached a photo to the tweet;

“Chief of Defence Staff General Abayomi Olonisakin salutes President @MBuhari ahead of their meeting today at the State House.”

The photo was taken by the President's personal photographer, Bayo Omoboriowo.

Contacted by Igbere TV on Sunday, President's Spokesman, Femi Adesina said he is not aware of the development.

“Not aware”, he simply wrote in response to a text sent to his phone.

Christianity EtcCOZA: Nigerians Blast Fatoyinbo, Police, Over Invitation To Dakolo, Wife (pixs) by State001(op): 4:50pm On Jul 21, 2019
Nigerians have continued to react to the police invitation served on popular Nigerian singer Timi Dakolo and wife, Busola, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV reports that the police had on Saturday, invited the duo for questioning over alleged falsehood.

This comes hours after Dakolo and wife raised the alarm that some armed men were intimidating and trying to forcefully abduct them to Abuja.

Igbere TV recalls that Busola had accused the presiding pastor of Commonwealth of Zion Assembly, COZA, Biodun Fatoyinbo, of rape.

In a statement sent to Igbere TV, the Force Public Relations Officer (PRO), DCP Frank Mba said: “The invitation is sequel to an on-going police investigation touching on the wider and highly publicized case involving Bisola Dakolo, Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo and others.”

But the statement did not go down well with many Nigerians.

A check on Twitter Sunday afternoon showed that Biodun Fatoyinbo and the police were being dragged as the duo appeared on top trends.

While many accused the clergyman of using the police to intimidate the Dakolos, others questioned the rationale behind the invitation ‘when same had not been issued on the accused, Fatoyinbo’.

Here are some screenshots obtained by Igbere TV...

PoliticsEdo Assembly: Heavy Gunshot As Gunmen Invade Hotel, Kidnap Oshiomhole (VIDEO) by State001(op): 1:55pm On Jun 19, 2019

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GoxL_-DqfA

Heavily armed policemen and political thugs numbering over 50 on Tuesday, invaded Golden Tulip Hotel, GRA, where 16 lawmakers-elect of the Edo State House of Assembly were lodged, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV gathered that Hon. Seid Oshiomhole, younger brother of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was beaten black and blue and abducted alongside Victor Edoror, a former Deputy Speaker of the Edo Assembly.

The attack, Igbere TV reports, comes barely 24 after the inauguration of the 7th Edo Assembly.

Igbere TV had reported that 9 out of 24 members-elect had on Monday at about 10:22pm ‘elected’ a new Speaker, Frank Okiye and Deputy Speaker, Yekini Idiaye, under a circumstances many have described as “undemocratic.”

The inauguration was held under tight security allegedly on the instructions of Governor Godwin Obaseki, who is currently battling to dismantle the structure of his predecessor, Oshiomhole ahead of Edo 2020 guber poll.

The 16 lawmakers-elect, who are Oshiomhole’s loyalists, were reportedly attacked by a team of thugs led by a notorious hoodlum with the name ‘Shaba’ and Muktari.

The thugs accompanied by the police and Governor Obaseki’s chief security detail, were allegedly co-ordinated by the Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, Igbere TV learnt.

Report say the thugs in their hundreds, swarm on the hotel, went door-to-door breaking in and demanding the whereabouts of the members-elect who just released a statement denouncing the swearing-in ceremony conducted the previous night.

As at the time of filing this report, the whereabouts of Victor Edoror is unknown, with speculations rife that he may have been abducted.

Seid Oshiomhole, an elected legislator, was reportedly beaten and stripped naked by the thugs while the police watched in connivance.

The attack and the abduction of Victor Edoror is connected to his Speakership ambition, Igbere TV learnt.

CrimeChristabel Buoro Suicide: How 300-Level UNIBEN Student Committed Suicide (Photos by State001(op): 8:03am On Jun 19, 2019
A 300-level Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) female student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), has taken her own life, Igbere TV can report.

The girl whose name was given as Christabel Buoro, took substances believed to be snipper on Tuesday at her off-campus hostel in Ekosodin, Igbere TV reports.

Contrary to media reports that Miss Buoro died as a result of heartbreak, preliminary investigation showed that her death has nothing to do with sour relationship.

The deceased left a note which suggested that she must have died as a result of depression.

The deceased had asked whoever that saw the note to “hold” two ladies (names withheld) responsible, citing “irreconcilable differences” as reasons for her actions.

According to the letter, she only took to suicide as last resort and to prove a point.

Igbere TV gathered that it was the deceased neighbours who alerted men of the Nigeria Police, BDPA-Ugbowo division, when several attempts to reach her proved abortive.

A bottle of the sniper she took was however seen beside her body, our source added.

As at 7:15 pm when our news crew visited the scene, a police van was seen recovering the body from her apartment to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) morgue.

When contacted for comments, Spokesman for the University of Benin, Mr. Michael Osasuyi, confirmed the development. He however said he was yet to be officially briefed about the incident.

“It is unfortunate that we lost one of our students. We sympathize with the deceased family most especially the MLS department,” Osasuyi added.

A police source said investigation into the incident had begun, adding that the deceased family would want their privacy respected “for now.”

“The two ladies (whose names were listed in the suicide note) have been invited for questioning, they are currently in our custody, that is all I can tell you for now,” the police source said, adding, “her (the deceased) family wouldn't want any detail in public now until investigation had been concluded.”

A friend of the deceased, who did not want her name in print due to the nature of the incident, said the late student had attempted suicide after she was reportedly raped in 100-level.

She said, “I can boldly say her death has nothing to do with heartbreak. Christy has been secretly dealing with depression, she doesn't talk she is the secretive type. But she had once attempted suicide in 100-level by taking overdose paracetamol after she was ‘raped’.”

The rate of suicides involving students has been on the increase of recent, from Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Ibadan to Lagos State Polytechnic.

The latest incident comes barely a year after Adams, a 500-level student of the Department of Computer Engineering of the University of Benin, was found dangling from the roof of his apartment at Ekosodin Community in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.

PoliticsThugs Beat Seidu Oshiomhole, Edo Lawmakers-Elect by State001(op): 11:52pm On Jun 18, 2019
THE crisis rocking the Edo State House of Assembly degenerated into a violent confrontation Tuesday evening as 15 Iawmakers-elect, including Mr. Seidu Oshiomhole (Etsako West 11), the younger brother of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were attacked by some suspected hoodlums.

Some of the lawmakers were said to have sustained serious injuries were rushed to the hospital for treatment where they are still recuperating at the time of filing this report.

The 15 lawmakers who are loyal to the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole were not invited to the Monday night inauguration of the Assembly where 9 members met to elect Mr. Frank Okiye (Esan North East 1) as Speaker.

During the violent assault, the elected legislators who vowed to resist the emergence of Okiye, a Governor Godwin Obaseki loyalist, were severely beaten up by the goons who inflicted bodily harm on them.

According to an aide of one of the lawmakers who would not want his name in print, the attack which happened at a hotel in downtown Benin during a meeting by the lawmakers-elect saw both hotel staff and guests run for safety.

A close police source who was not authorised to speak on the issue said that a former deputy speaker, Mr. Victor Tiger Edoror led his colleagues to the police headquarters in Benin to make a report of the assault.
Some of Edoror’s aides who accompanied him to the State Criminal Investigative Department were seen talking in low tone yesternight as he wrote a statement.

Efforts to reach the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. DanMallam Mohammed proved abortive as his mobile phone was engaged as of the time of filing this report.

PoliticsWe Can’t Disclose Details Of Buhari’s Assets - CCB by State001(op): 8:01pm On Jun 18, 2019
The Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) has said it cannot disclose the details of President Muhammadu Buhari’s assets to the public, Igbere TV reports.

This was in response to a request by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), seeking a disclosure of assets declaration submitted by President Muhammadu Buhari in May.

Igbere TV recalls that President Buhari on Monday, May 27 received an asset declaration form from the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), two days before his inauguration for a second term.

The form was presented to the president inside the Presidential Villa in Abuja by the Chairman of the CCB, Professor Muhammad Isa, who visited the State House in company of other leaders of the CCB.

But the CCB said the information requested by SERAP cannot be provided on the grounds of ‘invasion of privacy’.

In a letter signed by Mr. Musa Usman, on behalf of CCB chairman, he said the request “falls short of the requirement of the law”.

The letter sighted by Igbere TV said only the National Assembly can prescribe conditions for the release of the forms, but such conditions are yet to be prescribed.

Reacting, however, SERAP in a statement sent to Igbere TV by its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, said the group will challenge the decision of the CCB at the court, adding that “declaration forms are public information, and not private information”.

PoliticsAbducted Pastor Released After Paying Ransom To Herdsmen by State001(op): 12:40pm On Jun 07, 2019
A Senior Pastor with the Christ Gospel Apostolic Church, Osun State, Mr Femi Akinniyi, who was abducted by suspected Fulani herdsmen four days ago, has been released after payment of N650,000 ransom, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV gathered that the police were yet to locate the herdsmen and the pastor, when he was released yesterday, Thursday.

Igbere TV had reported that Akinniyi was in his Toyota Corolla car, driving in the afternoon, when he was waylaid by fierce-looking gunmen on Ife-Ikire-Ibadan Expressway.

The kidnappers shattered the windscreen of Akinniyi’s car with their guns and then dragged him out.

They removed his car keys, collected his phones and marched him into their den.

The police said it also discovered that a gang of armed robbers, for close to 30 minutes, robbed motorists at the same spot where the pastor was abducted.

When the police got to the scene, they noticed that Akinniyi’s car was riddled with bullets.

Narrating his ordeal, Akinniyi told friends that he saw hell in the kidnappers den.

The pastor’s captors, Igbere TV learnt, had initially demanded millions of naira, but later collected N650,000 when they realised he couldn’t cough out the initial amount.

The kidnappers contacted his family members and arrangement on how to get the money across to them was reached.

A family source told Igbere TV pastor Akinniyi has been admitted into a private hospital for proper medical treatment.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and some other notable pastors, including Akinniyi’s associates, were said to have played key roles in securing his release.

One of those who went to secure his freedom and who preferred anonymity, said: “Pastor Akinniyi told me that his abductors comprised of nine herdsmen and a Yoruba person, who understood their language. The Yoruba guy stood in their midst and was their mouthpiece for negotiation of ransom.”

Venerable Babalola, another pastor, who played a major role in securing Akinniyi’s release, appreciated God for the cleric’s safety.

Efforts to speak with the Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Folashade Odoro, on the matter, proved abortive. But a top ranking officer, however, confirmed the report, saying, “the case was initially reported to the police.”

CrimeOutrage As Appeal Court Judge Slaps 68-year-old RCCG Pastor by State001(op): 6:23am On Jun 07, 2019
There was outrage in Akure over the alleged assault of a 68-year-old pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Mrs. Felicia Akindurotoye, by a Judge of the Court of Appeal, Justice Folayemi Omoleye.

Igbere TV gathered that the incident happened on Wednesday, during the midweek service of the RCCG in Ijapo, Akure, the Ondo State capital.

Justice Omoleye allegedly came inside the church, Glory Tabernacles, at about 10:00a.m. disrupting the then ongoing Wednesday’s Divine Encounter service.

The judge whose her private residence is located beside the church, is said to have been having a running battle with the RCCG, claiming that prayers and noise from the church members usually disturb her.

The church was said to have been built in the place since 1989, while the judge was said to have bought the house beside the church about 10 years ago.

A source who attended the church service said it took the intervention of men of the Nigeria Police from Ijapo Police station to stop the judge from further public fisticuffs at the church.

The source who craved anonymity said: “Hon. Justice Omoleye Folayemi of the Court of Appeal, Akure, enters the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Glory Tabernacle Parish, Ijapo Estate-Akure.

“The Provincial Headquarters of Ondo Province 1 during our mid-week Wednesday Divine Encounter Service between the hours of 10a.m and 12p.m., and slapped a 68-year-old woman, and one of the pastors who tried to advise her not to disrupt the church service.”

Confirming the attack, the Assistant Pastor, Olatunde Awoyelu, and Pastor Dele Oyesola in-charge of the affected church, described the incident as “unfortunate.”

They described Folayemi’s action as strange and dishonourable to a very senior legal officer.

Also, the Pastor in Charge of the Region 22 comprising Ondo and Ekiti States, Pastor Idris Umar, said the church had directed its lawyer to write a petition against the Judge for her dishonourable action by slapping and beating a 68-year-old Assistant Pastor, Mrs. Felicia Akindurojoye and another Parish pastor Felix Solomon during the Wednesday’s Divine Encounter service.

He said the woman was rushed to the State Specialist Hospital for treatment over the injury received while Solomon did not sustain serious injury.

Umar said the petition would be forwarded to the National Judicial Council (NJC) to investigate and punish Justice Omoleye.

On his part, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Femi Joseph, said investigations had begun into the matter.

Joseph said the DPO in charge of Ijapo Police Station has been directed by the Commissioner of Police to interrogate all the parties to the dispute.

Former Governor of Abia State and Senator-elect for Abia North Senatorial District, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, on Thursday hailed the election of Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti as the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), describing it as a welcome development.

“He is humble, forthright, accommodating, brilliant, dogged, urbane and patriotic.

PoliticsSHOCKER: Soyinka Backs Obasanjo On ‘islamisation’ Claims by State001(op): 10:39am On May 23, 2019
Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has berated the Federal Government for attacking former President Olusegun Obasanjo over his comments that Boko Haram insurgency and herdsmen crisis had become an agenda to ‘Fulanise’ West Africa and ‘Islamise’ Africa.

Igbere TV recalls that Obasanjo made the comment on Saturday in Delta State while the Federal Government, in a statement by Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Tuesday, lampooned Obasanjo, saying he was seeking to divide Nigeria in his old age.

Reacting, however, Soyinka flayed the Federal Government for ignoring the call for collaborative efforts to combat insecurity as suggested by Obasanjo.

He spoke at the United Bank for Africa (UBA) symposium, tagged: “Africa’s history redefined: Our past, a path to the future.’’

Igbere TV reports that, Soyinka said, “with collaboration, unity is possible even in the plurality of our languages.”

“However, everybody knows that my relationship with Obasanjo is not too cordial but at the same time, we should be very careful not to be dismissive. If there is a substance, the language must be put aside for a moment.

“I heard the Minister of Information, and I had the feeling that they are leaving aside the substance and worrying too much about the language. Obasanjo was calling for a meeting of stakeholders on a very serious aspect of social menace this country is undergoing.

“This country is undergoing a horrendous descent into the abyss. The perfect picture of Africa is what we must continue to uphold in view as leaders have used the word ‘unity’ to destroy our people.

“The issue of Boko Haram is currently being discussed in the House of parliament in England in relation to Africa’s well-being,” he added.

PoliticsAtiku: Why I Asked Bulkachuwa To Withdraw From Presidential Election Tribunal by State001(op): 10:19am On May 23, 2019
Former Vice-President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has explained his decision to request that the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, withdraws from the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal.

Igbere TV reports that Abubakar and his party, PDP, are challenging the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in the February 23 presidential election. They asked Justice Bulkachuwa to withdraw from the five-member panel she headed. They based their demand on Bulkachuwa’s relationship with an APC leader. Igbere TV gathered that her husband is a Bauchi Senator-elect on the APC platform.

On Wednesday, the Tribunal ruled against Abubakar and the PDP. It said both parties could not prove the possibility of bias against the judge and that Justice Bulkachuwa’s husband was not a party to the suit.

Despite the ruling of the Tribunal, however, Bulkachuwa refused herself from the panel on ‘personal grounds.’

In a statement sent to Igbere TV Thursday morning, Abubakar said his “legal team’s objection was not a reflection on Justice Bulkachuwa’s character or competence.”

“As a matter of fact, I have great respect for her, being a pioneer and advocate for gender equality and female empowerment,” he said.

Full Statement,

“One of the principal maxims of the Common Law is nemo judex in causa sua (no man shall be a judge in his own case). The call by my legal team for Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa to recuse herself from the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal was predicated on this principle, being that her husband, Alhaji Mohammed Bulkachuwa, is an All Progressives Congress Senator-elect and the case she was expected to adjudicate upon had a bearing on that party.

“My legal team’s objection was not a reflection on Justice Bulkachuwa’s character or competence. As a matter of fact, I have great respect for her, being a pioneer and advocate for gender equality and female empowerment.

“It is with this in mind that I commend Justice Bulkachuwa for recusing herself from the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal Panel hearing my petition against the Independent National Electoral Commission and the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Her action showed courage and is an act of patriotism. She has, by this action, increased the confidence the public have for the judiciary.

“Not only do I commend her, I also pray, especially in this holy month of Ramadan, that Justice will be done by the tribunal according to the fear of God and not in keeping with respect for the powers that be.

“May God bless the judiciary and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu has said he would brief President Muhammadu Buhari on the outcome of the meeting he had with President Nicolàs Maduro of Venezuela.

He said this while addressing newsmen at the Simon Bolivar International Airport on Wednesday.

Igbere TV reports that, Kalu, now a Senator-elect for Abia North, had on Tuesday paid a visit to embattled President Maduro, whose stay in office is being challenged by the President of Venezuela’s National Assembly, Juan Gerardo Guaidó.

He said that his visit to the South American country was a peace initiative of the Orji Uzor Kalu Foundation (OUKF) and its partners across the globe.

According to the Forbes-rated billionaire businessman, for any nation to thrive, there must be peace and harmony. He however did not disclose details of the peace moves.

Kalu, while speaking further, said that he used the opportunity of his visit to also meet with members of the Afro-Venezuelan community.

He called on governments of the United States of America (USA), United Kingdom (UK), China, Russia, Nigeria and others to fashion out an inclusive and integrated strategy to overcome the crisis facing Venezuela.

The Igbere-born philanthropist stressed that foreign leaders and diplomatic corps across the globe are deliberating on the challenges being faced by Venezuela in a bid to restore peace and normalcy.

His words: “I am in Venezuela in my capacity as the founder and chief promoter of Orji Uzor Kalu Foundation.

“The visit is in line with our foundation’s objective of promoting peace across the world.

“We are working with development partners and critical stakeholders to ensure peace and prosperity in Venezuela.

“We are living in a global community and as such, we must continue to promote and sustain peace initiatives across the world”.

Kalu, who did not disclose details of his meeting with Maduro, hinted that upon his return to Nigeria, he (Kalu) would brief President Muhammadu Buhari and convey a note from Maduro to the Nigerian leader.

“President Buhari has continually played leading roles in promoting world peace. This feat will in no distant time earn Nigeria’s President, the Noble Peace Prize.”

Igbere TV reports that the Senator-elect, who was seen off by Venezuelan Deputy Foreign Minister, Yvan Gil, has since departed Caracas for Germany.

He is expected back in Nigeria this weekend.

This is not the first time the former governor would broker peace.

Igbere TV recalls that, Kalu, had on several occasions, settled disputes and prompted peace among individuals and communities.

Specifically, he had in the past, settled the rift between Muhammadu Buhari and General Ibrahim Babangida, Chief Odimegwu Ojukwu and Dr. Alex Ekwueme and many others.

Kalu made headline last month following the move to bring together a National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu and President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, to resolve their differences.
