My name is Onu Princeley, and I have been on a journey to pursue my passion for web development since January 2019. Despite my efforts, I have been struggling to secure a job in the field since January 2024. It has been a challenging road, and I fear that without the opportunity to work with a team, my passion and hard work might go to waste.
I am reaching out to this community in the hope of finding someone who can offer me an opportunity to gain experience in web development. I want to emphasize that I am willing to work for free. This is not about the money for me; it is about pursuing my passion and proving myself in the field.
If you or anyone you know is in need of a dedicated and enthusiastic web developer, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at +2348142534211. You can also check out my portfolio site here https://steno1.github.io/portfolio20/ to see some of my work.
Additionally, if you are already working in the field and could use some extra help, I would be more than happy to assist you for free. Whether it is tackling excess work or teaming up on projects to gain experience, I am here and eager to contribute.
Thank you for taking the time to read my message. I look forward to connecting with you all.
your portfolio site is very nice. Good job. But I would personally preferred lighter background with darker text. Also some of your projects look like the are static pages and you still have lorem Ipsum in some. Another thing is this, I may be wrong, but some of your works look like some projects in Udemy. Like Natour, Trillo. I think I have come across such project, by a CSS guy. He was teaching CSS. My advice is to try and change the name of the project, and change one or two things so that, by mere hearing the name or looking at it, the person won't noticed if it was a tutorial. Nice one. Am also a self taught, looking to break through in getting a job, but I don't know where to start. My portfolio was rubbished here. So I removed all my css and currently building a new one. Here is my WhatsApp 08142534211. Pls let align
Devdevdev: This clown went to copy and paste code.
Your portfolio website was" built the frontend with React TypeScript, Sass CSS and deployed on AWS Amplify and serverless backend with NodeJs, ExpressJs, MongoDb, AWS Lambda and AWS API Gateway." Lol. What nonsense. The stupid portfolio site doesn't even have any functionality and links don't go anywhere. Can you prove he copied it. Even if he did, is still part of the game. Why must you be very negative when you see good things
It is rubbish junior devs like this copy and paste clown that have made the job market oversaturated and difficult to get into.
TastyFriedPussy: When you think you have seen the worst and ugliest looking website an acclaimed nairaland web dev can design in the name of a porfolio website, fiam, an even greater nonentity will pop up. Shebi if them ask this one now, he will say he is a web dev. Later him go they shout "bring me all your web development jobs, bring me jobs". with this rubbish wey him dey design. OP let me just tell you the truth, that your website na nonsense. Better go and look for a hard skill to learn like barbing or shoe making, you will not go far in this web dev path with this calamity you call website. Don't listen to all those fools above like that Greatigbowoman prasing you for this nonsense you designed, they are just trying to make you feel good, they don't like saying the truth but me, i go talk am as e dey hot. You designed nonsense, if i see better thing, i go talk say na better thing. This your work na pure bull sh*t
.Nairaland is the worst place I have seen for developers. Many bitter people here. Do you know the amount of effort, skills , sleeplessness night it took that guy to develop this, and all you could say is this? My brother don't mind anybody. Infact stop showing your work in nairaland. If u need people to review your work, go to reddit
Thank you all for your advice. My major problem is lack of mentorship. I have no one to ask questions and is really affecting me. Sorry for the people I didn't reply well to. I was just a bit frustrated with some replies, because of the amount of time and effort I have put to learn, and at that, some people said I knew nothing. But is well. Am trying to refactor the site. Pls check if is still very bad or I should just rebuild a new one entirely.... https://steno1.github.io/portfolioReact2/
Konetech: Hahahah this this terrible… why don’t you let me teach you animation and game development and the little coding skill you have might be useful… for necessary integrations . That’s my YouTube channel
Namaster: I get what you mean NOW. But Hanna...Nia gave some solid advice.
To build on what he said, here are some actions you can take to improve the site:
1. Fix the colour scheme
Your website has TOO MANY colours.
It's disturbing. Hann suggested taking a look at designs on Behance and modelling your website after them.
Copy good website designs until you internalise what makes a design good.
ALWAYS keep your design simple. Your current website has a LOT of colours making noise and screaming for attention.
Compare that with Nairaland design where you can count all the colours on the website on one hand.
2.Your MENU section is an atrocity
WTF dude!
Why do you think it's okay to SPLIT the screen just to accommodate the menu. I get physically disgusted just looking at that split.
It's a website for self promotion. It should attract not repel. Replace that split with a drop-down menu that uses a fixed toggle button.
3. Reduce animation
It's cool that you know how to include animations in your designs. Now REMOVE it!
Your picture rotates. The background and text introducing you changes while I'm reading it.
These things have jarring effects that make me want to run away like flash. It kills engagement.
Limit the animations if you don't want to remove them TOTALLY.
4. Break down the GIANT wall of texts
Writing in giant walls of texts with no paragraph is a good to way to make sure NO one reads them. It's a web copy NOT biology text book.
Break it down into short sentences and paragraphs.
Also, use CHATGPT to edit for grammatical and punctuation errors.
5. Your resume design is OUTDATED
Google better resume templates and follow them. The current one looks archaic and ridiculous.
By the way, allow me to congratulate you on learning so many tech stacks. You did a great job. Do the corrections suggested on this thread and continue to apply for jobs.
You will get a nice job. Eventually.
P.S. Those who advised you to re-learn CSS are merely concerned about your design skills. Consider taking a refresher.
Also, Hanna...nia suggested learning C# because it could help you break into web design for banks. Seems banks have a preference for C#. Look into that.
Namaster: You sound EXTREMELY dumb. Your posts here show the calibre of people flocking to Tech jobs.
People should not worry about saturation. It's dumb people like the OP that's bloating the numbers.
You asked for advice on getting your first job. People gave you criticisms and pieces of advise on how to improve. Some of them have been in the industry for years.
Yet you're bitching about " bitter people on Nairaland" rather than thanking them profusely. And making relevant adjustments.
If you want to be coddled, go meet your Mummy. Otherwise, sack up and make changes.
.lol is not the criticism that I don't like, but how it was done. No one here has pointed out what the problem was. One said I should go and learn JavaScript and css, the other that I can't never get a job with this and so on... no pointing of what the problem is

.Is not the correction that is vexing me, but how. One said I just go and learn css and JavaScript. No one actually points out what the problem is
Even my 8 years sister does a better web design than this
You absolutely don't need a fancy website as a portfolio website
Just keep it simple stupid!!
lol. All I can see, is how bitter most nairaland people are. Most Nigerians are too bitter. I thank God mine getting jobs don't depends on your approvals
BlackhatMentor: No one will give u a Job with such ugly looking portfolio.
Its better u don't add any CSS at all that this.
Go back and learn CSS and JavaScript
Lol, is that all you got to say? You are a very bitter person, when I get a job, I hope you will come here to comment again, coz I will post it because of people like you
Hannania: Firstly, from your link, you deployed the project on GitHub. I'll advice you host it on another mainstream platform. It doesn't have to be paid. This is to avoid bias on your ability to host.
Secondly, as a beginner, I'll advice you have your close friends give constructive feedback to your work(that's where you need a mentor). Let's assume you're a client and you need a website, no lie, will you hire a developer with this kind of portfolio? . It's a good start, but the interface is poor. I'll rate it 4/10. You most likely do not have an eye for design. Get ready made design on sites like Behance or frontend mentor, and model your design. When you get use to seeing good designs, you'll adapt.
Thirdly, I'll give you a solid advice. The best way to get into software development in Nigeria presently if you intend to do back end and you're a recent graduate is to learn C#. That's because barrier of entry into banks is not that difficult. But you hardly see beginners taking this shot.
Lastly, Network, Network and Network. The market is not smiling. You need to be spoken for
There is a picture between the header and about me, but is like it didn't load on your phone, likely coz of network. Also I have projects I hosted on render that I listed there, so not only GitHub
I have been on an exciting journey learning web development for a while now, and I have finally reached a point where I feel confident about my skills and ready to land my first web dev job. However, I'm a bit lost on where to begin this new chapter.
I'd greatly appreciate any advice, tips, or personal experiences you can share on how to kickstart my web dev career. Here is link to my portfolio site. https://steno1.github.io/portfolioReact2/
If I were you. I will give everyone quit notice. Look my house for the mean time. After a while, when the case has died down, open it back and start renting again with proper vetting
lol. You cant even master fullstack dev in one year, even if you put 6-8hours learning consistently everyday. At best you will know the basics/foundation. But not a master.
Just strolling down my house, I happened to jam this masquerades, and they were in close range, so I quietly went towards the corner to avoid them, one approach me, and did a wierd sound that I did not understand. I was signalling him that I did not understand what he was saying. Before I knew it, he started flogging me, and others joined. They were about 15-20 of them, along Fem park, otobogidi road Nsukka. They were flogging me as the wanted. I received more than 30 strokes of their canes. The encircled me and flogged to their satisfaction. Even when I started running, the keep chasing after me and were still flogging. All my backs and hands are all filled with bruises. Even my skull. Is this the kind of culture some people are saying we should protect and promote? Now I understand why some people have hatred for some tribe/ethnic group. I have started developing strong hatred for Nsukka and her people. Why should they allow such harassment of people by their masquerades. People were there, watching as this was going on. Am really sad and angry...
The suffering is just too much, fuel is 500 naira per litre in my location, still yet, no one is protesting, everyone is minding his business, as if nothing is happening...
