Foreign Affairs / Police Officer Rescues Man From Burning Car by Stephenszego2: 12:53pm On Sep 29, 2021 |
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5SZ_JoHaqg A San Jose police officer on Sunday rescued an unconscious man from a burning car on Highway 101, officials said. Video taken from inside a responding San Jose fire truck showed rookie Officer Pedro Garcia run up to the burning car and drag the man out of the driver's seat. The man was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital with undisclosed injuries, officials said. Garcia has only been on the job for eight months, but he said when he saw the car engulfed in flames, his training kicked in. "What was going through my mind was just, 'I need to get him out now. Faster the better,'" Garcia said. "I think it was just in seconds the flames were getting hotter and bigger." Garcia said the intense heat made it difficult to get the man out of the car. "His shoes were melted to the floorboard," Garcia said. San Jose Police Chief Anthony Mata applauded Garcia for jumping into action. "Courageous, brave, and for him to kick in in eight months, just amazing," Mata said. "I'm extremely proud of him." Garcia was not injured. People are already talking about nominating him for the life-saving award. "I just feel like I was at the right place at the right time, and I know for a fact any other of my partners from the department, if they would have been in the same situation I was, they would have done the same exact thing," Garcia said. https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/video-shows-san-jose-police-officer-save-driver-from-burning-car/2667221/ |

Foreign Affairs / Thousands Flee As Volcano Erupts On Spain's La Palma Island, Homes Destroyed by Stephenszego2: 4:58pm On Sep 21, 2021 |
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jl9haXY-Rzw Lava flowing from the Canary Islands' first volcanic eruption in 50 years has forced the evacuation of 5,500 people and destroyed at least 100 houses, authorities said. The flow of molten rock will not reach the Atlantic Ocean on Monday evening, as earlier estimated, an official said. Experts say that if and when it does, it could trigger more explosions and clouds of toxic gases. "The movement of lava is much slower than it was initially.... There has not been a large advance during the day," local emergency co-ordinator Miguel Angel Morcuende told a news briefing on Monday evening. He said the stream had made its way about halfway to the coast. A new stream of lava erupted from the volcano late on Monday, prompting the evacuation of residents in the town of El Paso, the regional emergency agency wrote on Twitter. The volcano first erupted on Sunday, shooting lava hundreds of metres into the air, engulfing forests and sending molten rock toward the Atlantic Ocean over a sparsely populated area of La Palma, the northwestern-most island in the Spanish archipelago, which sits off the northwest coast of Africa. No fatalities or injuries have been reported but drone footage captured two tongues of black lava cutting a devastating swath through the landscape as they advanced down the volcano's western flank toward the sea. A Reuters witness saw the flow of molten rock slowly tear its way through a house in the village of Los Campitos, igniting the interior and sending flames through the windows onto the roof. Around 100 homes have been affected by the volcano's eruption, said regional emergency official Jorge Parra, adding that residents should not fear for their safety if they follow authorities' recommendations. Six roads on the island were closed, officials said. Regional leader Angel Victor Torres said the damage would be substantial. "It is still active and will continue to be active for the next few days," he said. "It was horrible," said Eva, a 53-year old tourist from Austria. "We felt the earthquake, it started in the morning.… Then at 3 [p.m.], the lady from our house came and said, 'You have to pack everything and leave quickly.'" "We're happy to go home now," she said at the airport, boarding a flight back home after cutting her trip short. Tourism Minister Reyes Maroto said the eruption was "a wonderful show" which would attract more tourists — comments that were criticized by the opposition at a time when many residents have lost their homes. Some of the tourists at the airport disagreed with Maroto. "We want to leave as fast as possible," said Wienard, a 55-year- old social worker from Salzburg, Austria. But at least one visitor was happy. "I felt like a little child inside, very excited," said Kabirly, 26, a market researcher from Belgium. "It was also my birthday yesterday so it was sort of a candle on the island cake! About 360 tourists were evacuated from a resort in La Palma following the eruption and taken to the nearby island of Tenerife by boat early on Monday, a spokesperson for ferry operator Fred Olsen said. More than 500 tourists had to leave their hotels. Officials said they were hopeful they would not need to evacuate any more people but warned of the need to treat the volcano with caution. "It is still active and will continue to be active for the next few days," Torres said. The lava flow was likely to reach the coast at about 8 p.m. local time. Explosions still possible Officials warned of possible explosions and clouds of toxic gases when the lava reaches the sea. Anticipating reduced visibility, maritime authorities on Monday closed down shipping to the west of the island. La Palma had been on high alert after thousands of tremors were reported over a week in Cumbre Vieja, which belongs to a chain of volcanoes that last had a major eruption in 1971 and is one of the Canaries' most active volcanic regions. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez visited some affected areas and met officials on Monday, and later took to Twitter to praise the emergency personnel's response. Emergency services said it was unclear what path the lava would take to the ocean. Authorities had evacuated people with mobility issues from several coastal towns, including the Puerto Naos resort. Airspace around the Canaries remained open with no visibility problems, Spain's civil air authority said after a local airline cancelled four flights between islands. https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/canary-island-la-palma-volcano-1.6182166 |

Crime / Canada man pleads guilty to murdering Nigeria Woman (Deborah Onwu) in 2019 by Stephenszego2: 6:14am On Sep 18, 2021 |
A Calgary man with developmental disabilities has pleaded guilty to murdering a youth counsellor. Brandon Newman was 18 years old when he fatally stabbed Deborah Onwu, 47, on Oct. 25, 2019. Newman was a resident of a Woods Homes suite in Marda Loop at the time where Onwu was working as a youth and family counsellor. In earlier court appearances, Newman has been described as "childlike." The crime was detailed in an agreed statement of facts prepared by defence lawyer Adriano Iovinelli and prosecutor Carla MacPhail. Why are you doing this to me' The night she was killed, Onwu agreed to work a shift for a coworker. Another woman was working in the downstairs suite while Onwu worked upstairs. Newman came home around 2 a.m. on Oct. 25, 2019. At first, as noted by Onwu, he "was in good spirit." But 30 minutes later, the downstairs counsellor, identified in court documents as AA, heard screaming. "Why are you doing this to me," Onwu screamed. 'The boy stabbed me' AA ran to help and found Onwu coming down the stairs to the outside of the home. Onwu was suffering from 19 stab wounds including three that hit vital organs. "The boy stabbed me," she told her coworker. AA laid Onwu down on the ground floor and called 911. When the first officer arrived on scene, AA was frantic, yelling "help her, help her." Officer performed CPR Onwu was motionless and covered in blood. The officer tried to perform CPR but it was too late and Onwu died at the scene. Newman left the scene and hid the knife under a bush. He took a taxi downtown to the Calgary Drop-In Centre. Police arrested him not long after. According to Iovinelli, Newman has "significant difficulties," which will be elaborated on during the sentencing hearing. Court of Queen's Bench Justice Jim Eamon will hear sentencing submissions later this year. A second-degree murder conviction comes with a life sentence with no chance of parole for 10 to 25 years. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/brandon-newman-deborah-onwu-murder-plea-1.6179994 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AzpeiK0ekM

Foreign Affairs / US Military Admits Killing 10 Civilians Including 7 Children In Kabul Airstrike by Stephenszego2: 8:36pm On Sep 17, 2021 |
A United States military investigation into a deadly Kabul drone strike in August has found that it killed 10 civilians and the driver and the vehicle targeted was likely not a threat associated with ISIS-K, Gen. Frank McKenzie, the top general of US Central Command, announced at the Pentagon on Friday. McKenzie told reporters at the Pentagon that the strike was a "mistake" and offered an apology. "This strike was taken in the earnest belief that it would prevent an imminent threat to our forces and the evacuees at the airport, but it was a mistake and I offer my sincere apology," McKenzie said. McKenzie added that he is "fully responsible for this strike and this tragic outcome." The Pentagon had maintained that at least one ISIS-K facilitator and three civilians were killed in what Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Mark Milley had previously called a "righteous strike" on the compound on August 29. The investigation released Friday found that all of those killed in the residential compound were civilians. In the lead up to the strike, drone operators surveilled the courtyard for up to 4 to 5 minutes. In that time, a male driver left the vehicle. One child was parking the vehicle and other children were present in the car and the courtyard -- as CNN had been told by the Ahmadi family. The military based the strike on a reasonable certainty standard to launch the strike on the vehicle. Tragically, it was the wrong vehicle, a US military official familiar with the investigation told CNN earlier Friday, adding that no reasonable certainty is not 100% certainty. Previously, US Central Command pointed to "significant secondary explosions" as evidence of a "substantial amount of explosive material" in the vehicle. On Friday, the US military source said that after reviewing footage from infra-red sensors, they would no longer characterize this as an explosion -- instead, it was more of a flare up. The US official said that in the time leading up to the strike, the US had at least 60 different intelligence reports about threat streams toward US forces at Hamid Karzai International Airport. This is a breaking story and will be updated. https://www.cnn.com/2021/09/17/politics/kabul-drone-strike-us-military-intl-hnk/index.html?utm_term=link&utm_content=2021-09-17T19%3A07%3A38&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twCNN https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niO5PuBtDC4 |
Foreign Affairs / Haiti PM Is A Suspect In The Murder Of Late President Moise, Replaces Justice Mi by Stephenszego2: 7:13am On Sep 17, 2021 |
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAcP5gqiOpQ HAVANA, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Fresh turmoil hit Haiti's government on Wednesday as Prime Minister Ariel Henry replaced his justice minister and a senior official stepped down, saying he could not serve a premier under suspicion in the assassination of President Jovenel Moise. Amid a brewing political crisis, Henry replaced Justice Minister Rockfeller Vincent with Interior Minister Liszt Quitel, who will take charge of both portfolios, according to a statement in Haiti's official gazette. The resignation of Renald Luberice, who served more than four years as secretary general of Haiti's Council of Ministers, came after new evidence emerged linking Henry to the former justice ministry official who investigates say is one of the main suspects behind Moise's killing. Prosecutors say phone records show the two spoke twice around 4 a.m. on July 7, just hours after Moise, 53, was shot dead when heavily-armed assassins stormed his private residence. Henry has denied any involvement in the murder but he has not directly addressed the phone calls and on Tuesday he replaced Haiti's chief prosecutor who had been seeking to charge him as a suspect and ban him from leaving the country. The premier last week dismissed attempts to interview him over Moise's killing as politicking designed to distract him from the work at hand in the poorest country in the Americas where power struggles have for decades hampered development. In a letter shared on social media on Wednesday, Luberice said he cannot serve someone who "does not intend to cooperate with justice, seeking, on the contrary, by all means, to obstruct it." Henry on Wednesday replaced Luberice with Josue Pierre-Louis, a veteran technocrat who has since 2017 held the rank of government minister in his role as the General Coordinator of the Office of Management and Human Resources (OMRH), according to the gazette statement. Report ad KILLING AND CRISIS More than 40 people including 18 Colombians have been detained so far as part of the investigation into Moise's killing. The investigation has made little apparent progress to solve the mystery and has been riddled with irregularities. Several judicial officials went into hiding after saying they received death threats while the original judge assigned to the case recused himself. Moise named Henry, a neurosurgeon and political moderate, to the position of prime minister just days before he was assassinated in a bid to placate the political tensions that plagued his mandate and led to a major constitutional and political crisis. The country has just a handful of elected officials after failing two years ago to hold legislative or municipal elections amid a political gridlock. Moise had ruled by decree. But there is no constitutional framework for a government in a situation like the current one. As such, Henry needs a broad consensus in order to govern. On the weekend he announced an agreement between Haiti's main political forces on a transition government aiming to lead next year to elections and a new constitutional referendum. But any sign of weakness could lead to a fresh power struggle. Senate President Joseph Lambert, who tried to claim the presidency in the days following Moise's killing as the most senior elected official remaining, made a fresh swipe at the post on Tuesday evening. He called local media to cover his swearing in at parliament but a gunfight interrupted proceedings. The Senate in a statement blamed the shootings on gangs that were "hired by dark forces in order to thwart the work of the Senators". Lambert has called for a news conference on Wednesday evening. His likely claim to power will be "another quagmire to this extra-constitutional scenario we find ourselves in", said a western diplomat based in Port-au-Prince. https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/haiti-official-resigns-over-pms-links-suspect-presidents-slaying-2021-09-15/ |

mrvitalis: The point is FG has jurisdiction over most of VAT generated so States clamouring for collection is not the solution. The problem here is not whonis collecting but hownit is being shared i.e. mere 20% based on derivation (states collected from) and whooping 50% on equality and 30% based on their fake population data. If states push to collect, FG still controls the bulk of VAT collection which is from import VAT, international VAT, and From F.C.T. 3 Likes |

Foreign Affairs / There Was No 2nd Or 3rd Explosion In Kabul - Pentagon Corrects For The Records by Stephenszego2: 6:38pm On Aug 27, 2021 |
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMw3gwNDDDc WASHINGTON, Aug 27 (Reuters) - A deadly attack in Afghanistan's capital Kabul on Thursday was carried out by a single suicide bomber at a gate to the airport and there was no second explosion at a nearby hotel, the Pentagon said on Friday. The Kabul airport attack, which killed 13 U.S. troops and at least 79 Afghans, was claimed by Islamic State militants. The Islamic State's Afghan affiliate, ISIS-Khorosan, has emerged as an enemy of both the West and of the Taliban. The attack marked the first U.S. military casualties in Afghanistan since February 2020 and represented the deadliest incident for American troops there in a decade. U.S. General Frank McKenzie, the head of U.S. Central Command, had said on Thursday that initial information was that two suicide bombers had attacked the airport gate and the nearby Baron hotel. "I can confirm for you that we do not believe that there was a second explosion at or near the Baron Hotel, that it was one suicide bomber," Army Major General William Taylor told reporters on Friday. He said U.S. troops wounded in the attack were now being treated in Germany. Taylor said about 300 U.S. citizens had been evacuated in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of Americans evacuated to about 5,100. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told the reporters during the same briefing that the United States believed there are still "specific, credible" threats against the airport. "We certainly are prepared and would expect future attempts," Kirby said, adding: "We're monitoring these threats, very, very specifically, virtually in real time." U.S. officials have said the biggest threat facing the airport are potential rocket attacks or car bombs. Thursday's attack occurred during a U.S.-led evacuation of tens of thousands of people. The Taliban came to power nearly two weeks ago as foreign forces began withdrawing, ending a 20-year war. https://www.reuters.com/world/pentagon-says-kabul-attack-carried-out-by-one-suicide-bomber-2021-08-27/ |
