Education / 6 Tips To Make Studying Abroad More Affordable by study4free(m): 9:52pm On Mar 24, 2016
Studying abroad doesn’t have to break the bank. There is a lot of information out there online, on campus, and in the form of firsthand experience from friends and other students who’ve recently returned from studying abroad. Before you decide NOT to go due to cost, do your research.

Most people seem to assume that study abroad is expensive so much so that they write it off before even investigating programs and associated costs. This is unfortunate because studying abroad can be quite affordable, and it’s certainly worth the investment. In fact it’s probably the cheapest opportunity that most students will have to spend a significant amount of time overseas without actually moving there. But the cost of studying abroad varies greatly depending on the type and location of the program, the length of the stay, and whether the program is administered through a university or an outside organization.

In an effort to encourage more students to go abroad, many colleges and universities are committed to maintaining cost parity; in other words, a semester abroad should cost exactly the same as one on the home campus, at least as far as tuition and board. Others offer vouchers that can be used to help defray the costs of airfare, meals and in-country travel, since these costs can vary widely depending on the destination country. Some study abroad programs especially those in developing countries can actually be less expensive than tuition and fees for the equivalent amount of time on your home campus. With a little research, you might be able to find scholarships and financial assistance to cover a significant percentage of the upfront cost.
Below are the 6 Tips to Make Studying Abroad program More Affordable

1. Determine if you can apply your financial aid to study abroad.
Any financial aid that you already receive from your university should be transferable to a study abroad experience run by or affiliated with that university, because the tuition that you will be paying to study abroad is probably that of your home university. Some institutions will also allow students to use their university aid for nonaffiliated programs. Moreover, the amount of aid may vary depending on the type of program you choose. So don’t assume that whatever aid you are currently receiving from your school will transfer over; you need to check with the financial aid office. Federal financial aid can be applied to any program as long as credit is earned and your home college accepts the transferred credits.

2. Apply for Study Abroad Scholarships.
Most colleges have a straightforward framework for applying for study abroad scholarships, one that lays out the potential amounts available, the process and deadlines for applying, and any restrictions that may exist. General scholarships for study abroad assistance, as well as targeted scholarships for diversity, first-generation (if you are the first in your family to attend college), and financially needy students are usually offered. Students must apply for scholarships and some can be very competitive. Be sure to look beyond your college scholarships, and ask your on-campus mentor or study abroad adviser for further advice and ideas:

College-based study abroad scholarships, including merit-based, student-specific, destination-specific, program-specific and subject-specific.
U.S. Government-sponsored scholarships and fellowships, including Benjamin A. Gilman, numerousFulbright awards, Critical Language Scholarship and Boren Awards.
Private organizations, such as AIFS Foundation and Rotary Foundation.
Foreign governments or organization, such as German Academic Exchange Service and the Chinese Government Scholarship Program.

3. Pursue destinations off the beaten track.
The best way to get a handle on the cost of living in your temporary home overseas is to compare the cost of living between the two countries, taking into account the fact that individual cities or regions can be above or below the national level. Study abroad program advisers should be able to provide you with the exchange rates and cost of living statistics for your host country, including those for food, housing and local transportation. Individuals who have studied abroad in the same location or on the same program recently should also be a good source of practical, on-the-ground information. Certain locations such as Spain, England and Italy are inherently going to be more expensive than others such as Ecuador, Peru or Senegal. It all has to do with the host country’s overall standard of living, especially as reflected in the postsecondary education system, and the overall price of basic commodities and services.

4. Opt for a short course.
Many universities have been encouraging students to go on short experiences abroad, coupled with on-campus coursework before departure and after their return. Because these programs involve only a limited time overseas – two to four weeks – they usually have the advantage of being considerably less expensive. However, many of these short courses do not have the same number of scholarships available.

5. Look for Ways to Save Money on the Ground.
Two of the biggest expenses are housing and food. Participating in a home stay is considered the cheapest option and includes meals and laundry, and offers the best immersion. You can also save money by preparing your own meals, if possible, and eating at local restaurants. You should also manage your money wisely, an important lesson to learn as a student that you can carry through life as a traveler.

6. Work or intern abroad – but do so legally
Internships abroad are a growing area in education abroad, and they are not only in the purview of study abroad offices. You can also seek guidance from your academic department or career services department which often work with the private sector to arrange internships for their students. More often than ever before, universities are reaching out to their alumni to develop internship opportunities for their students. Plus you might be able to find some sort of work when you arrive, but make sure you investigate and follow local labor laws.

Study abroad doesn’t have to break the bank. There is a lot of information out there online, on campus, and in the form of firsthand experience from friends and other students who’ve recently returned from studying abroad. Talk to other students who have gone before (several if possible) to find out how much things really cost and how much they really spent above and beyond the “posted” price of the study abroad program.

Nairaland / General / 5 Classes Of Nigerians Who Play Important Roles But Are Hardly Recognised by study4free(m): 11:11am On Mar 09, 2016

If you live in Nigeria, seeing hawkers on the street or food vendor by the road is not out of place and everytime, you step into any Nigerian street, there is a likelihood that you would come across one of them.

Often times, we understimate the importance of these set of Nigerians but the truth is, many of us, depend on them for one thing or another.

Yarnvibes in this piece brings you the people we often don’t think of, but play a large role in our everyday lives…

Ever been inside a Lagos trafic and you are so thirsty and the only thing on your mind is water! Then a pure water or bottle watter seller pops out of nowhere on the road?

The reality is, for as low as N100 you can buy yourself a plate of cooked meal from any other road side food vendor. It is known fact that many Nigerians depend on them daily for survival.

Whether you have cash to buy or not, any one who follows the news definitely takes glances at newspapers being hawked by the vendor in traffic.

Trying to get somewhere really fast, the okada man is your best bet.

These ones don’t sell in kilos and don’t have a fixed price. So everything depends on your bargaining power and the naira in your purse.

What do you think

Education / 8 Mistakes You Must Avoid While Applying For Scholarships by study4free(m): 4:41pm On Mar 04, 2016
Applying For Scholarships can be tricky. There are currently several scholarships going on. You can check them out here.

However many students fail to get selected for scholarships, several times, why is this the case?

1. Applying when not eligible: Scholarship schemes are targeted at a specific class of students or audience (200 level students, Medical students, graduates of specified courses etc). Your application is bound to be denied if you do not belong to the desirable audience. Ensure you meet the scholarship requirements before applying.

2. Providing inaccurate or inconsistent information on the application form: Ensure you fill in your information accurately. Even the smallest detail counts, if you were admitted in 2012, enter 2012 not 2013.

3. Not providing complete documentation: Some scholarship schemes specify required documents to be uploaded, ensure you have all listed documents available and upload appropriately.

4. Submitting multiple applications: Create one account and apply using that account only. Applications from a single candidate using multiple accounts will surely be detected.

5. Uploading pictures as passport: Upload an appropriate passport photograph not a picture.

6. Applying to the wrong scheme: For scholarship schemes with multiple scholarship categories i.e Host-community based Scheme (e.g Nigerian Agip Oil Company scholarship scheme) and Merit-based scheme applications (e.g Agbami Medical and Engineering Professionals scholarship) simultaneously open from the same sponsor, ensure you apply to the scheme you are eligible to appropriately.

7. Using a computer centre operator/friends to complete your application: You know yourself better than anyone else, do not hire a computer centre operator or engage your friends to apply on your behalf.

8. It is highly competitive: Thousands of candidates apply for scholarship schemes regularly. This means a good chance that you are not selected even after meeting all the requirements exists. To enhance your chance of selection, ensure your avoid these common mistakes.

If you know of any other things that can likely cause mistakes in scholarship applications, do drop your comments below.

Education / The Difficult Stages In The Life Of A Nigerian Graduate by study4free(m): 12:06pm On Feb 27, 2016
The most difficult age for any man born in Nigeria should be between 24 and 29 years, the pressure to be something, to be someone is so immense.

When you look around you everyone seems to be doing something for themselves, people seem to be living a life you only dream of. You have applied for jobs and the results have been more disappointing than Yakubu Aiyegbeni penalty kick at the world cup.

Sadly this is the age when most guys lose it, the age when if not careful one is consumed by alcohol or drugs, because the disappointments become too much and you find alternative ways to face reality. Worse is when a few people you studied with have been lucky enough to land jobs, soon your circle of friends gets thinner – mostly they don’t even cut you out but you will be real with yourself and cut yourself off. I mean what will you do when you are in a WhatsApp group of friends and they are discussing about last week’s trip in Dubai and planning another trip South Africa while you are not sure of what your next meal would be?

Most times you follow the conversation silently, all alone like a cross on the grave. Soon you realize this is no longer your kind of crowd because the more you keep around the more the pressure to be something, takes a toll on you. You know when stories about house parties come up and you act deaf because you don’t know where an extra 5 guys would fit in
your house.

Have you ever sat in a group of people discussing the new iPhone on the market or how British Airways offers poor services and you can feel your heart whisper to you “boss this is chest pain hour, can we just go and find a group that talks about GMAT, SHLn Dragnet, jobberman or job vacancies sites“.

But you sit there as these people are lost in their lifestyle conversations, you are like a secretary taking minutes in meeting. You are totally forgotten like one of a woman’s breasts during pre-intimacy. Once in a while one of the friends will turn and ask if you need another drink and you wonder if you should just say No and head home, but head home to do what? So you grudgingly drop in the comment “I will have just one last one“ Lie.

But after a few years of job hunting, you are now ready to take anything even if is to smell a rich man’s farts as long as it pays , so you end up as an office messenger in one blue chip company in town.

To imagine that 4-5 years of studying and getting a degree is now reduced to picking and dropping off letters and if you are not doing that, you are being sent for cheap lunch by the employees when they are broke and they can’t order with fast food. This is when conversations about where people schooled start, you go silent for it’s no longer of any use to say you also reached University, it doesn’t matter – you have resorted to surviving.

Once in while you will bump into your now well to do classmates, they would offer you lunch, but not even eating the meals at Eko Hotel or Sheraton will make you feel better about yourself, because in your mind you wish instead they would give you the 30k and you sort your meals for the next 5 weeks. As it is the norm you will have photos taken, and uploaded on Facebook, but always it’s your face that would
look the odd one out – not even the best filters can hide a face which has suffered the city’s dust and sun but survives on
boiled beans.

The worst mistake you can do during this period is to try and date – there is nothing that a person going through such times can offer in terms of love. How are you going to do evening romantic walks when you are tired from walking delivering letters in offices around town? What are you going to tell your lady when she says she wants to go for relaxation at the bar, pool or love garden sites that are in town? That your
financial religion doesn’t allow it or what? This is the age when you sit back and watch as the ladies you would want to date are dating or getting married to guys 10 years older than you.

And you can’t blame them – it’s only that your life seems to be progressing slower than their goals in life. Most of the ladies you meet during this period, if you are lucky will be patient with you till you hit 28, and if by then your life is still in disarray like Liverpool’s and Chelsea’s performance in the EPL then my friend be prepared for a walk out.

But then this is the age when you learn a lot about life, if you can hack through this stage of life, the only hard moment in your life would be when you lose your parents – that’s if you are still lucky enough to have them. This stage teaches you a lot about perseverance, about appreciating the small wins you have each day, it teaches you something about friendship, love, career growth and personal responsibility.

This is always your rise or fall moment depending on the choices you make. How you live your life in the 30’s is determined by how you handled your life in this phase
