Education / 5 Tips To Associate And Succeed As An International Student by study4free(m): 7:12am On Apr 21, 2016
How to Associate as an International Student?

As the world develops more and more, a great number of students tend to leave their home country and go to the far-and-away lands to get a degree. It doesn’t really matter where one comes from – Nigeria, Ghana or India.

What all international students faced with the very moment they start attending classes in these far away lands is the need to struggle to ‘associate.’ Feeling like a legal alien in New York, they try to get into the crowd in order to build a successful social life.

This articles presents and deals with some practical recommendations for you to associate with the majority as you study in the USA. Tips and recommendations presented here can as well be applied if you study in the UK, in Australia, or in any other country other than your home country.
Practical tips to success as an international student

1). Connect with the classmates

Students, who come from elsewhere, may find it hard to come up with the most common interests with which they can get close to their American mates. But the truth is that a course of study or a major is a cool way to relate.

Make sure to introduce yourself to the class and offer some of the guys to work on a home assignment together. See if they’ve any advice on how to cope with this or that project.

2). Improve your English

Both writing and speaking skills are crucial to integrate into the foreign environment. Feel free to use manuals, journals, attend courses or improve your writing with the help of services like WorldEssays.com.

3). Get to know American cult stuff
As an international student, you have to know all crucial elements of the USA life. All cult TV shows and films are part of the USA life and you should know them. Or at least pretend that you do.

4). Hang out with both US and international pals

When it’s your first time in a new country, you will most likely try to cling to people, who are international students as well. There’s nothing wrong in trying to find and identify with someone, who 'suffers' or is as you, but also do your best not to spend all your time with the international students. Instead, meet and communicate with American classmates. Just get outside your comfort zone to learn more about the culture you live in.

5). Reveal the unknown
There’s an attracting power in the unknown. Make sure to tell your class mates about what things are like where you come from - what New Year’s traditions you have, what foods are made, what is/isn’t allowed for a woman there. Show the videos of celebrations you have in your country and teach them what they do not know.

6). Volunteer

This is a great option for the students who wish to integrate into their new communities. There’s a wide range of special programs that are created to bring together domestic and international students so that they could share their skills and experiences. All these activities let the international students get to know both – the fellow students and the communities they’re living in.

IN CONCLUSION
If you’re seriously planning to make it in the new place you find yourself in, you have to exert every effort to be noticed. Make the contact, initialize a little talk. Friendship never happens instantly, but if you don’t try, it will never exist. Don’t be shy to start a conversation, make a simple greeting. Be yourself, no matter what they say.

Jobs/Vacancies / 5 Social Media Strategies For Graduates Looking For Their First Job by study4free(m): 4:17pm On Apr 20, 2016
Social Media Strategies: As a fresh graduate, you might face the most challenging period of your life: looking for your first job. You have a limited list of contacts, and few recommendations from your professors. However, that background is not enough for you to land a good job, and you’re not really happy with the conditions for starting positions.

Do you know that social media can help you get noticed using social media strategies? We’re not talking about LinkedIn, although that network is extremely important for your professional success. LinkedIn is a tool that every graduate is aware of, and it’s a pretty straightforward concept – you build the perfect profile, you start making contacts, and you apply for jobs using that online resume. In this article, we will focus on using other social media to make career prospects.

Social Media Strategies to Maximize Career Prospects

1. Polish out your Profiles
Before going any further, you really need to remove compromising content from your profiles. Have you shared photos of your crazy nights out? It’s time to remove them from the eye of the public. Make them completely private; even your friends shouldn’t have access to them. Your Facebook and Twitter profiles shouldn’t be blank, though; they need to reflect your interests and competence. Share some smart articles with your comments on them. Write about things related to the industry you’re about to become part of.

Think about it this way: if a potential employer lands at your profile, what do you want them to see?

2. Spread the news
It’s not bad to share a Facebook status update or a tweet that shows you’re looking for a job. There is nothing to be ashamed of: you just got your degree and you’re ready to put it to good use. Think of a good update that won’t seem desperate. Tell your friends to share the status/tweet and recommend you to people they know. This is a great chance to get noticed.

3. Write a blog!
You still don’t have a job, so “I don’t have time to blog” is not an excuse. If you want recruiters to notice you, you need to look like an expert – someone who’s committed to their niche and knows more than most. Explore some interesting topics you can’t easily see within the community of bloggers. Make connections with influencers and write guest posts to expand your network. Sooner or later, the right people will notice you.

Don’t forget to promote the most important posts you write through your Facebook, Google+, and Twitter profiles. You should also start a specific Facebook page for your blog. You can use it to communicate with your audience and get ideas for new posts.

Needless to say, you can also use your blog to write about your job hunting journey. However, it’s important not to appear desperate. Write a fun, engaging post and ask your readers for strategies that would help you land a job.

4. Don’t forget Google+
Google+ is an extremely important network, but most people forget about it. It’s not as fun to use as Twitter and Facebook, so it’s easy to leave your profile unattended. What’s the first thing a potential employer sees when he uses Google to search your name? They will first be interested in your LinkedIn page, and then they will check out your Google+ profile. That’s why you need to use it!

Share links to useful content related to your degree, and use the network to promote your blog posts. Don’t forget to respond to comments!

5. Develop your network of connections
Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are mostly intended for building virtual friendships, but you shouldn’t ignore their professional networking potential. Discover the brands you would like to become part of. Follow their pages and try to understand their culture. If there is any open position in these companies, they will probably share the news via social media. Due to the fact that you’ve followed their updates and you’ve explored their recent campaigns, you will show how well you would fit in the company’s culture.

Don’t limit your search to brands; you can add professional contacts, too! For example, let’s say you discover a potential hiring manager on Twitter. You can’t just follow them and then start tagging them in tweets to promote yourself. That would be rude. Here is an idea: you can retweet some of their tweets – that should get them to follow you back. Then, try to develop a spontaneous connection by commenting on some of their tweets without being too obvious.

Conclusion
Are you ready to reveal the full potential of social media strategies? With the right approach, you’ll start making connections with the right people in no time. From that point on, it will be up to you. You have to make good impressions with your online presence!

Education / Bola Ige’s Family Scholarship For Indigent Students In Osun, Oyo by study4free(m): 8:22am On Apr 18, 2016
The family of the late Chief Bola Ige, former Attorney General of the Federation, has announced a N29 million scholarship for indigent students of Osun and Oyo states.

According to the son of the late former attorney general, Mr Olumuyiwa Ige, 66 students have been selected from public schools across the states.

Ige, a former Commissioner in the state, said the students would go through a competitive selection process to choose the best of them.

He stated that the scholarship is intended for students in the senior and junior secondary school categories.

He explained that two students would be picked from each category.

“The rationale behind this scheme is to keep the legacy of my late father alive in the area of prioritising qualitative education for children irrespective of their backgrounds and colours.

“The modality of the scholarships is through giving free education worth N12 million to pupils in the junior category, which will cover their education, feeding, and accommodation from JSS 1 to SS3.

“Also, in the senior category, N2.5 million worth of scholarship will be given to the two winners in the `A’ Level programme, for the duration of one year.

“This will qualify them to get admission in any university around the world.

“The totality of the scholarship scheme is N29 million in all – that is, N24 million for the junior category, and N5 million for the senior category.

“What makes the scheme easier and effective is that our family school, the Vale College, Ibadan is where the students will enjoy the scholarships, which will make mentoring and monitoring more effective,” Ige said.

The Vice-Principal of the school, Mr Billy Oladimeji, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the selection process was on merit.

He said the second stage of the scheme, was an oral test, with a view to discovering the oratory prowess of the students, the virtue in which late Bola Ige was known for in his life time.

Oladimeji stated that the winners in the two categories will emerge eventually after the completion of the second stage at Ibadan. (NAN)

Education / Nigeria University Scholarships ~ 8 Application Tips For 2016 by study4free(m): 11:57am On Apr 15, 2016
Studying in a well-known Nigeria university might have always been your dream, but money can prove to be a hurdle. Do not worry as almost every top university offers scholarships for students, and you can apply for the same. Now, if you are thinking on how to apply for any Nigeria university scholarship, then continue reading to discover the most helpful tips.

1. Do Proper Research

If you do not want to exert extra pressure on yourself while trying to apply for a scholarship you desperately want, then begin your research early. The more time you invest in your search, more will be your options.

2. Check Your Eligibility

Yet another thing you need to do early is to check what scholarships you are eligible for, as you perhaps will not be eligible for all universities in Nigeria. A careful research will help you shortlist the scholarships most apt for you, and you can spend time applying only for them

3. Be Organized

It always helps to be organized, and same is the case here. Make sure all your scholarship documents are in one folder. This way you will not have to keep hunting for them, and you will also be able to keep track of deadlines for each scholarship you are applying for.

4. Do not forget to include any required information

You must offer all information that the selection panel has asked for. If your application has any missing information, it certainly will not create the right impression, particularly is these items have specifically been requested.

5. Presentation Is Important

A scholarship application is quite like a job interview. You need to create a good impression, and illegible writing or spelling errors certainly will not look good. Fill your form as is requested, but before you send it, make sure you ask a friend or a family member to proof read it for any mistake that you might not have noticed.

6. Provide Correct Details

Together with offering all details that have been requested for, you also need to make sure all information provided by you is completely correct. Small details like correct and full address, or new contact number in case you have lost your old mobile, will avoid any delays and make you look professional.

7. Provide Referees/References

In certain cases, you might have to provide referees or references. Make sure you select these people wisely. Also, make sure to let your referees know when you are applying for the scholarship, and help them learn something about the type of experience or skills you will have to demonstrate. This will help them praise you in the right way.

8. Never Miss Any Nigeria University Scholarships Deadline

Always have some extra days in hand when you plan to apply for any scholarships in a Nigerian university. This could be very important if you are getting your application professionally printed, or if you need to wait for a confirmation from your referee. Do not forget, usually, late applications will not be entertained.

Education / International Students Can Now Study And Work In USA – 2016 New Visa Rules by study4free(m): 7:35am On Apr 14, 2016
The United State of America has simply introduced the USA New Visa Rules that create it attainable for international students to continue living and working within the country for 3 years once finalizing their studies.

Career / Must Read Advice To Young (nigerian) Graduates - Study4free by study4free(m): 3:32pm On Apr 12, 2016
Each time I sit on an interview panel, I see the need for guidance and mentoring of young graduates. Many struggle with getting, keeping jobs and generally building a career not because they aren't skilled but because they lack requisite insight. I'd like to share some of the lessons I've learnt along the way in the hope that it helps to make the path easier for those coming behind.

Bear in mind that this insight is derived from my own personal experiences, including mistakes I've made and learnt from in the last 12 years. Having worked in nearly 10 companies in and outside Nigeria, I can tell you that these principles hold true regardless of sector, industry or geography.

Don't Oppose Your Boss Publicly

In any organization, bosses close ranks, always and without fail. Bosses will never go against themselves in favour of a junior colleague, ever. So even if your boss is doing something wrong, it's not in your place to call him out. Sooner or later, management will find out and deal with him but till then, keep your head down and just do your work. Unless of course, you have found another job or you are smoking something like weed.

Work on Your Human Relations

It's not enough to be skilled or talented. If you are the most skilled person but your interpersonal relationships stink, you will not go far. Being personable and friendly trounce talent all the time. Be diligent in your job, yes, but don't make enemies in the process. That is not to say you should go about kissing people's asses, hell no. Only people who don't know their jobs do that. And they too don't go far. Know your job, do your job, be friendly about it. Relate well with both the people above and the people below you. And remember it's an office and not a family gathering.

Invest in Yourself

Your self development is entirely your responsibility, not that of the company you work for. Please read the last sentence again and let it sink in. If the company you work for has training schemes in place, take full advantage of it. If not, dip your hands inside your pocket and train yourself. Yes, pay for your own training. When I look at people's CVs and in 5 years, they haven't added anything to themselves, it raises a huge red flag. 5 years, no training, no conference, no seminar? And you want to get to the top? How na? Even entrepreneurs, the Dangotes & Otedolas, go to places like Harvard & Crotonville for trainings every year. You think getting to the top and staying there is by praying and fasting? Hian!

Bad Bosses Are Good

Since 2004 when I graduated and joined corporate Nigeria, I've had my share of bad bosses. I've had good, bad and downright nasty. I firmly believe that 80% of the time, people change jobs because of their bosses and not so much the company itself. Bad bosses strengthen you. They challenge you to either sink or swim. It's not a pleasant experience and can even break your spirit if you let it. Trust me, I've had my fair share of crying in the office. But if you don't break, you will soar. If you find yourself in a bad boss situation, take it as a challenge to soar and when the opportunity comes, seize it!

Never Badmouth A Boss/ Company Publicly Or At Interviews

When you've been around long enough, you will realise that corporate Nigeria is a very small place. We all know ourselves, really. Somebody will know somebody that knows your boss. And that somebody might just be the one interviewing you for your new job. Never, ever, badmouth a place you've worked for or a boss you've worked with in public. If you're asked about it in an interview, find something else to say, seriously. Na you wan talk say teacher mama die?

Choose a Career Path

Stop throwing CVs around anyhow. Decide what it is you want to do. As simple as it sounds, many young graduates just don't get it. And I understand, at that stage you just want to be earning a salary sha, so any way na way. But you see, the sooner you streamline all your job searching efforts to a particular line, the quicker your growth will be.

This is something I sincerely wish I'd known when I was starting out too. It takes time and effort to build a successful career, the sooner you start, the faster you'll grow. And you have to start for the love of it, not for the money.

I don't know how else to say this. It is easy to see when people apply for a job because of the money and not because of the passion. You can't cover that up in an interview. Of course passion can and usually meets money even in a paid job but be sure to start from passion. The other way round will burn you out eventually.

Be Prepared To Sacrifice

The truth is, there is no shortcut to the top. You just have to pay your dues. Every success has a story. This is why it is important to let passion be the motivator of your career and not money. It is the passion that will sustain you before the money starts rolling in. When I tell people some salaries I have collected in the past they don't believe it. I just smile. There is a period of sacrifice, for everybody, in every discipline. The more your work on yourself, the more your propensity to earn. But it will not happen in one day.

When I see young graduates today telling an interview panel they want to collect X amount, I wonder who their advisors are. I've had a guy say well, my salary must be X because that's what my parents gave me when I was in school and I can't take less than that. Do you think I hired him? I wished him well and hoped for his sake that his dad had a conglomerate he could work in. Until and unless you have valuable work experience, your ability to negotiate pay is next to nil.

After all said and done, there is no end to learning and I am still learning too. I have merely outlined lessons I've learnt over the years and may differ from another person's experience. In all, I wish all job seekers and career builders out there the very best. God bless everyone's hustles.

Education / UNILORIN Plans To Offer Free Adult Education For Host Community - Study4free by study4free(m): 8:21pm On Apr 11, 2016
University of Ilorin, UNILORIN plans to provide free adult education programme for host community.

As part of its social service mandate to its host community, the Institute of Education (IOE), University of Ilorin, has concluded plans to provide free Adult Education programme and render free counseling services to inhabitants of Ilorin and its environs before the end of this year.

The Director of the Institute, Prof. Mudashiru Yusuf, who made this known in an interview with Unilorin Bulletin, said that efforts are on to bring back the self-sustaining extramural classes for candidates who have been failing in public examinations like the UTME and WAEC.

Pointing out that the programme will be carried out as a social service, Prof. Yusuf said its cost would be within the means of members of the University’s host community.

The Professor of Educational Technology highlighted some of the plans of the Institute as including the expansion of opportunities to accommodate more students through the establishment of certain Diploma programmes such as Human Kinetics and Health Education, Instructional Radio and Television, Art and Craft, Photography for School Certificate holders as well as the HND conversion programme.

Prof. Yusuf explained that the Institute’s mandate is to add value to the socio-economic development of the host community. He said, “The University is already doing it and we as a Faculty and the Institute of Education are collaborating to ensure that before the end of the year, we are going to mount free of charge, adult education programme for the people within Ilorin environment.”

The IOE Director said, “We are planning a Community Counselling Centre, which is going to be a free service by the University”. He pointed out that there are counseling issues on marital affairs, academic matters, job issues, mental health issues, and teenage affairs, adding that “there are experts to address these issues”.

He disclosed that these services will be sited on the mini-campus where the IOE is located.

The Director further stated that there would be collaboration between the Counselling Unit and the Centre for Supportive Services for the Deaf (CSSD), the Department of Health Education and even the College of Health Sciences for the overall benefit of the community.

Prof. Yusuf said, “We want to give the community a standard extramural environment where students will be taught and not assisted to cheat like some Centres are doing; we want to set the standard. We are educators; we know the standard and we should not just be blaming others for doing what is wrong, we should establish the standard and then others will follow the standard.”

On infrastructure to match these plans, the IOE Director said, “We are lucky that we have an administration that manages resources in the best of manner, and we are discussing with administration and we are calling experts to access what we have on ground, and efforts are on to ensure that this place is put into very good shape.”

Prof. Yusuf enjoined the Federal Government to accord priority to the funding of education, which is essential to the development of any society and treat teachers with respect in the areas of welfare, wages, job security and infrastructure. He said, “You must motivate and encourage the best minds to come into teaching,” adding that “as at today, teacher education is the secret of Singapore’s success.”

“What is the context of our teachers? What input do we have in them? What is the process of their working? How can you now expect quality products when the context is defective, the input is defective, the process is defective and people are talking about the students not passing; how will they pass when the government is not even doing anything serious about it…what we are having is the output of our poor planning, not paying attention, not giving the teachers what I will term facilitating conditions, in terms of remuneration, promotion and conditions of service.”

“Motivation has two dimensions; intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. The intrinsic one comes from the mind and in most cases; the extrinsic motivation will lead to that. The most important factor in student performance and achievement is the students themselves, followed by the teachers, followed by the school environment. Those who come into the teaching profession should be those who are willing to be teachers who see this as a calling not as a last resort or accidental teachers. There is the agreement with the government for special bonus for teachers, if they don’t implement it, they can’t be motivated”, he stressed.

The IOE Director, who recalled the contributions of a former Minister of Education, late Prof. Babs Fafunwa to the development of the education sector in Nigeria as a result of his vast experience, pointed out that the management of education has become politicised, urging the Government not to presume that everybody knows about the sector. He said that only educationists should be given the privilege to develop policies for the sector. “Let those who know about education proffer solutions to education, it should not be a political issue.” he maintained.

Aina makes case for establishment of National Research Council

The immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences, Prof. L.O. Aina, has called for the immediate establishment of a National Research Council in Nigeria that will be saddled with the responsibility of promoting and encouraging research endeavours.

Prof. Aina, who made the call last Wednesday (April 6, 2016) while delivering a lecture at Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State, said that when established, the council would ultimately drive ground-breaking research activities that will be of great impact on national development.

The Professor of Library and Information Sciences said that the proposed National Research Council and the National Universities Commission should set machinery in motion for the ranking of Universities in the country based on research output.

Prof. Aina explained that this ranking would be based mainly on articles published in scholarly journals that are listed by Web of Science, Scopus and journals with h-index of 10 and above. He said that the top-ranking universities must be adequately rewarded in terms of generous research grants.

The don, who spoke on “The Visibility of Researchers: Measuring the Impact of Journals in a Scholarly Community”, advised Nigerian researchers to always strive hard to publish their articles in top-rated journals in the world.

He lamented that Nigeria was ranked very low in terms of research output and quality of scholarly journals because researchers in the country generally publish their research findings in journals that will accept their papers rather than focusing on journals that require rigorous peer reviewing.

This scenario, he said, accounted for the low visibility of Nigerian researchers which essentially make their publications to have low impact in the international scholarly community.

Prof. Aina called on the Federal Government to make research funding a priority while also providing strategies that will improve the research output in Nigeria.

He advocated the creation of enabling environment for researchers to encourage and motivate them to dwell extensively on research findings with high level of visibility that will herald unprecedented community development.

Prof. Aina said in Nigeria, academics are no longer evaluated after attaining the professorial positions, saying that many Professors are not engaged in major research projects, but only engaged in research projects they supervise at Masters and Doctoral levels, which he said should not be so.

He, therefore, suggested that Professors be evaluated every five years while appropriate rewards should be given to those that are actively involved in research. He said the reward could be in form of percentage increase in their salaries, up to 50 percent where necessary.

The lecture was attended by academics of various disciplines among who are some members of the University of Ilorin community. They included the Dean, Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences, Prof. J.S. Sadiku; the Head of the Department of Computer Science, Prof. B. A. Oluwade; the Sub-Dean, Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences, Dr. A.L. Azeez; the Ag. Head of the Department of Library and Information Science, Dr A.O. Issa; and the Deputy Director of Ilorin Business School, Dr R.G. Jimoh, among others.

4. Check

Once you are done filling your scholarship application, it is crucial that you check it multiple times for any errors that you might have made. Make sure that there are no grammatical or spelling mistakes as that will make your case weaker. It is always advisable that you get your scholarship application checked and reviewed by other people as well.
