Nigeria is currently battling a number of violent groups including the Boko Haram, militants and other agitators – Professor Wole Soyinka , while speaking at the University of Benin, advised government on the next line of action to take Nigeria’s Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has advocated for stiff punishment for religious leaders caught preaching hate messages. Soyinka, who spoke at the University of Benin, Edo state, attributed the high- scale violence experienced in many parts of the country partly to what people hear from their religious leaders.Daily Trust reports that while delivering a lecture titled: ‘Culture at risk’ at 2nd Eminent Lecture series organised by the university, the litrary icon said some preachers engaged in messages that encourage religious intolerance According to him, the bombing and killing of innocent citizens in parts of Nigeria are a result of what people have heard from their religious leaders and made to believe. He said the destruction of mosques, churches, shrines and ancient monuments are all products of religious intolerance in the country. For some years, Nigeria has been battling Boko Haram in the north-eastern part of the country just as Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta states have become the faces of militant activities with the result being destruction of government installations. In the eastern part of the country, various groups, including the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Movement for the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), have continued with agitation for secession.Soyinka said: “My view is that, we can complain, we can proffer, we can condemn, as much as we want, until those who are guilty, even by curious liability, when a murder is committed are brought to book and made to apologize to the whole nation, and face penalty, such will not stop.” SOURCE: Daily Trust, www.naij.com news

The National Agency for Foods and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted Nigerians of the prevalence of fake alcoholic drinks, especially dry in the nation’s markets. Dr Abubakar Jimoh, its Director, Special Duties, disclosed in Jos on Tuesday that the agency had continued to advise consumers of alcoholic beverages to be alert and be very wary of fake and unregistered drinks. “Drinking alcohol is bad enough and people are always advised to take it in moderation; so, the danger associated with taking a fake drink can only be imagined,” he said. Jimoh said that the agency had taken its campaign against fake drinks to Plateau, Gombe, Benue, Bauchi and many other states in north, and had engaged traditional and religious leaders to lead the efforts. He particularly decried the rampant consumption of drinks like Ogogoro (dry gin) and `goskolo’ by youths, and urged stakeholders to join in the fight “especially since the youths are the group most affected”. “We have found that the youths rely on such drinks to gather enough courage to commit all manners of atrocities like armed robbery, kidnapping, rape, killing and the rest. “We have, therefore, continued to intensify our campaigns and that has resulted into some states coming up with bylaws that banned some alcoholic beverages. “We have also raided production and drinking points of some of these dangerous drinks, especially in Edo and Delta States, because the drinks have damaged many livers, kidneys and other vital organs of the body. “They have also led to the gradual decline in the health status of many youths and totally destroyed their capacity to contribute to societal development,” he said. Jimoh said that the drinks issue required special attention, especially now that government was asking Nigerians to go back to the farm in efforts to diversify the economy. “Farming requires a lot of energy– which is the asset of youths. The drinks destroy that energy, hence the need to rid society of them,” he said. The NAFDAC official explained that it was usually difficult to distinguish between the fake and genuine drinks because “many producers usually gather empty bottles with NAFDAC-approved badges and pour the fake contents into them. “Our advice is that the consumers must always be on the watch-out,” he said. He called for more proactive steps from governors to protect members of the public, and alleged that most governors had always paid lip service to the campaign against fake drugs and drinks. Jimoh expressed satisfaction over the agency’s achievements in its war against counterfeit drinks and drugs. “The prevalent rate used to be 16.7 per cent, now we have battled it down to 3.4 per cent and shall never relent in the war.” |
United States Secretary of State John Kerry yesterday described corruption as a dangerous crime, which must be tamed. He added that corruption costs the world over $2.6trillion annually. Kerry spoke at the palace of the Sultan of Sokoto where he delivered a speech titled: “The importance of resilient communities and religious tolerance in countering violent extremism’.’ He said: ‘’ This is money that can be used to improve the living standard and provide decent livelihoods for the people. Corruption is not only a crime, but very dangerous and it must be tamed.’’ The U.S. Secretary of State also acknowledged the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari to holistically fight corruption, noting that the President was elected on the platform of clean government. ‘’Nigeria is already a regional leader in the fight against corruption. The country is also a role model in the ongoing global efforts to fight corruption,” Kerry said. He acknowledged Buhari’s efforts to entrench morality, transparency, honesty and good governance in public life, noting that the President is also making efforts to recover all stolen funds. Kerry stressed the need for the support of the military, other security agencies and the judiciary, among others, to ensure the success of the anti corruption campaign. He said: ‘’ U.S. is also fully committed to fighting corruption and the entrenchment of good governance globally. One of Nigeria’s strength is diversity of culture and religious tolerance. ‘’ The former leaders of the defunct Sokoto caliphate and others like the late Sir Ahmadu Bello had stood by the virtues of peace, unity and tolerance.” He acknowledged President Buhari’s bold efforts in fighting insurgency and other crimes across the country, saying: “Boko Haram boasts of no agenda more than to burn schools. ‘’ They also kill and maim people, especially teachers, and it is the opposite of any religion.’’ Kerry also expressed US deep commitment to working with its partners like Nigeria so as to build counter-terrorism capacities. The U.S., he said, has worked out counter-terrorism strategies for implementation globally. He hailed the Sultan, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, for his efforts to entrench peace, unity and prosperity in Nigeria and beyond. He also lauded the plan by the Sultanate Council to establish an all-women university, noting that girls, women, children and other vulnerable groups must be educated, given jobs and opportunities to explore their potentials. Sultan Abubakar praised Kerry for the visit and his ‘’inspiring speech’’, saying: ‘’ This will encourage us to redouble our efforts for a more stronger, united and prosperous Nigeria. The event was witnessed by Governors Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto and and Abdul’aziz Yari of Zamfara State. He said the council would continue to promote peaceful coexistence among Nigerians for the overall political growth of the country. He explained that religious tolerance and understanding among Nigerians remained the principal objective of the Sultanate in mobilising Nigerians to tolerate one another for peace, progress and political stability of the country . Governor Aminu Tambuwal, who accompanied Kerry to the palace, said the state government would continue to strengthen peaceful coexistence among the people, irrespective of religious, tribal and political differences. “We don’t discriminate on religious, tribal, ethnic or political affiliations as we accommodate all for peace and harmony, “ he said. |
