Crime / Policewoman Soaks Niece’s Hands In Hot Water For Stealing Meat by sunnybobonwa: 6:18am On Jan 03, 2022
Policewoman soaks niece’s hands in hot water for stealing meat in Abuja

Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command have arrested a policewoman identified simply as Ruth for allegedly inflicting injuries on her 10-year-old niece, identified only as Miracle at the Dutse Alhaji area.

It was gathered that Ruth carried out the act after she caught Miracle stealing a piece of meat from her pot of soup on the Christmas Eve.

According to PUNCH, a resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the policewoman tied the victim’s two hands and dipped them inside boiled water.

The resident added that neighbours, who heard her cries, alerted the police and Miracle was rushed to the Kubwa General Hospital.

The source said, “On the Christmas Eve, she caught the young girl stealing a piece of meat from her pot of soup which she prepared for Christmas.

“She was angry with her and tied the two hands of her niece with rope and put them inside hot water.

“Her neighbours heard her crying aloud and later she ran out. They were surprised at what they saw. The girl sustained serious injuries on the two hands, and one of the neighbours, who could not bear it, called the police.
“It was the police that rushed her to the General Hospital in Kubwa. The policewoman is still at the Dutse Alhaji division.”

The FCT police command spokesperson, DSP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident, adding that investigation was ongoing into it.

Politics / How Soludo Won Ihiala Supplementary Election by sunnybobonwa: 3:56am On Nov 10, 2021
#AnambraDecides2021: How Soludo won Ihiala to confirm victory in governorship election

Mr Soludo defeated his closest rival, Valentine Ozigbo of PDP, with 58,422 votes.

Charles Soludo, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate, has won the Anambra State governorship election after winning in the sole remaining local government area in the state, Ihiala.

Mr Soludo defeated 17 others, including Andy Uba of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Valentine Ozigbo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the election which was seen as crucial for the future of APGA as a political party.

The state Returning Officer for the election, Florence Obi, the vice-chancellor of University of Calabar, declared Mr Soludo winner in the early hours of Wednesday, around 1:57 a.m. at INEC’s state collation centre, Awka.

Mr Soludo, a 61-year-old professor of economics and former governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), won the election in 19 out of the 21 local government areas of the state.

He scored 112,229 votes, while his closest rival, Mr Ozigbo of PDP scored 53,807, leaving a margin of 58,422 votes.

The APC candidate, Mr Uba scored 43,285.

The APGA candidate lost in Ogbaru Local Government Area, which was won by PDP candidate, and Nnewi North won by Ifeanyi Ubah of the Young Progressives Party (YPP).

The YPP candidate scored a total of 21,261 votes in the election to come fourth.

Mr Soludo won in Aguata Local Government Area which is where he and his two main opponents – Messrs Uba and Ozigbo – hail from.

The APGA candidate made a bold statement with his win in the polling unit of the Anambra Deputy Governor, Nkem Okeke, who recently defected from APGA to APC. Mr Soludo went ahead to win the election in the local government area – Njikoka.

The total votes cast in the Anambra 2021 governorship election is 249,631.

Mr Soludo is the second CBN leader to be elected a state governor in Nigeria’s history after late Clement Isong who was government of the old Cross River State during Nigeria’s Second Republic.

The former CBN governor had previously taken a shot at the Anambra governorship in 2009 under the PDP, but lost the election to Peter Obi of APGA.

He resigned from PDP in 2013 and went over to APGA with the intention to contest the Anambra governorship election of that year but was declared unqualified by the party’s screening committee.

Supplementary election in Ihiala

Mr Soludo was already leading other candidates by a wide margin when INEC suspended the collation of election results in the early hours of Monday and announced that election must be held in Ihiala Local Government Area on Tuesday as required by law – The margin between Mr Soludo and his closest rival, Mr Ozigbo was 52,624 votes, whereas there are 148,361 registered voters in Ihiala, according to INEC.

The commission said it was unable to conduct an election in Ihiala on Saturday because of a threat of violence.

At the end of Tuesday’s election in Ihiala, Mr Soludo scored 8,283 votes to defeat Mr Ozigbo who had 2,485 votes. APC scored 343 votes and YPP 344.

The accredited voters for the election in Ihiala was 12,299 out of the 148,361 registered voters.

During the political debate in Awka, Mr Soludo said Nigeria was going through “uncertain times” as it tries to move away from oil to a non-oil economy, and that Anambra, like other states in the country, needs a “transformational leader”.

He described himself as a “home boy” and the leader that Anambra needs in a “time like this.”

Update on meeting with MNK today, 2nd July 2021:

My Client - Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, was actually abducted by the accursed Kenya's Special Police Force on the 18th of June 2021 at their International Airport, and consequently taken to an undisclosed residence under dehumanizing conditions.
He was tortured and subjected to all forms of inhuman treatment which worsened his health condition. *He was illegally detained for eight ( good DAYS in Kenya* before being transfered to their Nigerian counterpart.
He was purportedly investigated on a bogus charge while in their custody, ostensibly, awaiting to be handed over after their findings proved him innocent of all the spurious allegations. They later beckoned on their Nigerian Counterpart to take over.
Kenyan Government was deeply involved in the abduction, detention and ill-treatment of my Client before the illegal handover to their Nigerian counterpart.
A scan of his heart showed that the heart has enlarged by 13% due to the dehumanizing treatment meted to him. There will be need for immediate proper medical examination and attention for him.
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu conveyed his goodwill message to all IPOB family members worldwide, and craved for your unrelentless prayers.
We are going back to the Court for the needful. Other details cannot be entertained here.
His fortified legal team will address these infractions at the proper forum as we progress. Other details on our legal strategy, may not be made public.
With Chukwuokike Abiama on our side, Victory is assured. For if God Almighty be for us, who can be against us?

Joe Igbokwe Breaks Silence On Alleged Attack On His Vehicle

The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Government on Environmental Cleansing and Protection, Hon Joe Igbokwe reacts after it was reported that he had been attacked by a group of angry youths.

Reacting Honourable Igbokwe took to his social media handle, were he said such never happened, and asked members of the public to disregard such news, as according to him were peddled by 'children of hate'.

Friends, Please ignore the lies and antics of the miserable and pathetic Children of hate that I was attacked by angry youths in Lagos today. It was a figment of the imagination of the lost generation who know nothing except how to tell outright lies, falsehoods, posting scurrilous drivels, calling other Nigerians names, and sowing seeds of discord.

I was busy attending our Monday weekily meeting with my colleagues which ended around 8pm today. May God help these lost generation and a bunch of untamed loose canons to receive common sense and get understanding. I will continue to preach that Igbo must imbibe cultural competence and emotional intelligence in Nigeria. They must learn how to build bridges across Nigeria and not burning bridges. This is common sense.

The Nigerian soldiers allegedly sentenced to death for refusing to fight Boko Haram without arms have regained freedom. Omoyele Sowore disclosed this via his recent tweet on Twitter.

Sharing the tweet, the politician activist revealed that the soldiers were released after Femi Falana fought for them. He also used the same opportunity and alleged that those who diverted funds meant for arms were offered ambassadorial positions.

He wrote:

"Innocent soldiers that were sentenced to death for refusing to fight Boko Haram without arms have now been released after Femi Falana, SAN fought for them. The criminals who diverted funds meant for arms are offered ambassadorial positions.

The tweet dropped by Omoyele gained the attention of his followers who came across it. Those who commented condemned what happened to the soldiers, adding that the insecurity in Nigeria is within.

Others are yet to comprehend why someone would steal money meant for buying of weapons. Some persons suggested that Nigerians must rise and do the needful immediately. See more reactions.

Politics / Canadian Judge Labels Nigerian Police Criminal Organisation by sunnybobonwa: 5:02am On Apr 19, 2021
Canadian judge labels Nigerian police criminal organisation, denies ex-SARS officer asylum

A Canadian Judge has denied asylum to ex-member of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad due to his association with the brutal unit and the Nigeria Police Force as a whole.

In October 2020, SARS was scrapped after a nationwide protest against its decades of harassment, intimidation, extortion, robbery and extrajudicial killing of more than 100,000 citizens.

Court document said the cancellation of the dangerous squad was not enough for Judge Sébastien Grammond to favourably consider Olushola Popoola’s request for asylum.

Mr Grammond arrived at the decision on April 8 after Mr. Popoola asked for a judicial review of the decision of the Canadian immigration department, which had earlier declared him inadmissible into the country because of his association with the Nigeria Police Force.

Grammond ruled: “I am dismissing his application because the decision-maker reasonably assessed the relevant factors for deciding whether Mr Popoola made a knowing and significant contribution to the crimes committed by the Nigerian Police Force.”

The court gathered that Popoola served as a police officer between 2002 and 2015 when he left the force to leave Nigeria for United States. He crossed into Canada from the U.S. where he has been seeking asylum in a bid to settle permanently.

Popoola argued that he did not partake in brutal violence and other forms of criminality that SARS carried out in the course of his service, and added that he should be considered as a civil ex-officer due to his voluntary exit from the force.

But Mr Grammond disclosed that Popoola could reasonably be assumed to know about the murderous and exploitative activities of SARS, even if he did not participate personally.

The Judge ruled: “Since Mr. Popoola reasonably knew that when he was a member of the SARS the suspects he handed over to the criminal investigation department would be subject to human rights violations.

“The tribunal finds this to be a significant contribution to the criminal purpose of the organisation since he had the knowledge of what could befall the individual subject to investigation.”

Crime / Southeast Attack: Unknown Gunmen May Have Gained Access To Police Armoury by sunnybobonwa: 4:35am On Apr 07, 2021
Southeast Attack: Unknown Gunmen May Have Gained Access To Police Armoury

Unknown Gunmen who attacked Police Headquarters in Imo State, Southeast Nigeria may have gained access to the armoury of the police command, contrary to the claim by the police that they were repelled during the attack.

The Nigeria Police had Monday blamed the attack on members of a proscribed secessionist group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), according to a preliminary investigation, insisting that the armoury was intact.

The police had maintained that the attackers’ attempt to gain access to the police armoury at the headquarters was “totally and appropriately resisted by police officers on duty who repelled the attackers and prevented them from breaking in and looting the armoury.”

But security sources informed HumAngle that the separatists may have carted away a huge amount of weapons from the armoury holding thousands of firearms, ammunition, and non-lethal weaponry.

One of the sources who did not want to be named said the development portends danger for the country and serious security threats

“If this is confirmed to be true, it raises the threat of an escalation of the violent campaign that has just been launched by separatists in Southeast Nigeria and parts of the South-south region,” said the source.

A top security official who opted for anonymity urged the Federal Government to immediately carry out a probe to assess, and not limit the investigation to the loss of lives and damage of facilities, but the carting away of a large cache of arms and ammunition.

The source told HumAngle that people within the security community are surprised the Police Commissioner in the state is yet to be recalled considering the breach and the lack of preparedness of the facility, despite multiple security reports warning beforehand.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered relevant agencies of the Federal Government to end what he called “anarchy” in Imo State.

The President in a statement on Monday by Garba Shehu, his spokesman, condemned what he regarded as the “deadly insurgent attack” that took place on the Police Command Headquarters and the Correctional Facility in Owerri.

Owerri Prison Break: I will not condemn Nnamdi Kanu- MASSOB leader, Uwazuruike

Following the prison break at the Owerri correctional centre in Imo state few days ago, the leader of the Movement for the actualization of sovereign state of Biafra (MASSOB), Ralph Nwazuruike, has said that he will not condemn Nnamdi Kanu, the leader IPOB or blame his members for what happened at Owerri.

Mr Nwazuruike during an interview with BBC pidgin said it’s too early to lay the blame of the prison attack on IPOB members as the Imo state Governor, Hope Uzodinma has constituted a panel to investigate the attack. He said what happened in Owerri is a security failure and the inspector general of police, Mohammed Adamu, who has since been replaced, ought to resign. He said he used to be one of those who think there is no need for a regional security outfit like Amotekun in the southeast but with what happened in Owerri, it is obvious there is lack of security in the region. He said the swift response of the federal government to what happened in Owerri and their silence to what happened in Ebonyi where herdsmen allegedly killed some people shows the federal government is not treating every regions equally.

On Nnamdi Kanu's style of agitation, he said people expect him to condemn kanu but he will not. He said though he does not support violence, a bad system of governance will usually give rise to bad people.

Politics / Nigerian Govt Has Plans To Destroy Igbo Land– HURIWA by sunnybobonwa: 3:48am On Apr 07, 2021
Nigerian govt has plans to destroy Igbo land, plots another genocide in Southeast – HURIWA

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has said that it suspects that agents of deep State may be involved in the recent attacks in the South East and South-South regions of the country.

HURIWA said that what a decent and thinking government should have done is to investigate the attacks using the best global practices, adding that failure to do this could mean that there were already plots in Abuja to cause maximum chaos in the usually peaceful South East of Nigeria just to destroy the economy of the same people deprived of government jobs.

According to the rights group, this systematically points to the possible involvement of the DEEP State, calling on the United Nations and the European Union to investigate this.

HURIWA, in a press conference addressed by its coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, in Abuja on Tuesday, said the group was particularly concerned with the pattern and methodology of these attacks and the ease with which the attackers carried out the criminal acts and then disappeared into thin air only for the Nigerian Police Force to start their empty media propaganda and to hang onto the most untested and ridiculous claims.

HURIWA noted that the current administration has since 2015 openly confessed pathological hatred for the Igbo-speaking people of the South East of Nigeria.

It recalled that the President had in his first ever international media interview in 2015 told the World that the Igbo and South South gave him 5% of votes and so he will not treat the Igbo same way as the North that gave him 95%, adding that the President has kept his word by giving all the strategic security posts to the Muslim Hausa/Fulani North.

“The President did not trust sons and daughters of the South East of Nigeria enough to assign one of the top internal security jobs even when by merits, there are several qualified Igbo-speaking officers.

“By the way, and by way of analogy, the current Army Chief was a Major General. Are there no Major Generals of Igbo extraction or are there no Igbo equivalents of major General in other segments of the Armed Forces like the Navy and Air Force?” HURIWA wondered.

“The President does not like the faces of Igbo except the person whom he made his official photographer. So you can see that the South East of Nigeria has received unfavourable treatment. The key spokesman of the President behaves more like the defender of Miyetti Allah castle sellers than an officer working for the citizens and the nation-Nigeria.

“There have been at least one dozen deaths of Civilians by suspected armed Fulani herdsmen in the South East since 2015 till even as recently as two days back. This government did not describe the attacks as terrorism. Even the one in Ebonyi that the friend of the President, Governor Umahi directly accused armed Fulani, herdsmen.

“The armed bandits destroying North West are terrorists, but this government rebaptized them as armed bandits and has watched as someone who is a religious cleric is busy defending these terrorists and even insulting Journalists for calling the armed bandits as criminals. Last time, a group affiliated to Fulani herdsmen said they attacked Benue Governor, but the President said nothing.

“The National Security Adviser says the man Sheikh Gumi has the right to talk to whomsoever he wishes to talk to, but this is the same government that the police have shot and killed about two or more journalists only because they were covering protests by Islamic Movement of Nigeria here in Abuja.

“The last attack in the Ebonyi community by armed Fulani herdsmen in which a priest and 30 other innocent civilians were slaughtered was never described as terrorists but rather Garba Shehu who signed a statement on behalf of the President who reportedly went to see his British doctor, sounded patronizing and dramatic by issuing empty threat to deal with them.

“Now, the attacks in Owerri has been hurriedly described as an act of terrorism and the IGP whose stay in office is a subject of intense ligation by citizens, quickly said IPOB was responsible and then as expected the so-called spokesmen of IPOB says they were not responsible.

“We will show you that there is more to it than meets the eyes when analytically observing the statements of persons who said they speak for Mr. President- the same person who defends Myetti Allah vigorously each time people are killed in Benue or Southern Kaduna even when the survivors say they heard their attackers speak Fulfulde. We suspect that agents of DEEP State may be involved.”

Furthermore, the rights group wondered, “Where were the Police/Army /DSS/Civil defence when these attackers struck in Owerri and reportedly operated for three hours to an extent that even Akara sellers videoed the incidents but no one counter-attack was launched?

“Is it not these police, soldiers, DSS that usually get wind of IPOB meetings and ESN camps and usually launch massive counter operation to nip their activities in the bud with many of the alleged IPOB members killed extrajudicially, but gunmen struck and destroyed strategic National Security assets in Owerri but rather than for IGP, DG of DSS, Army Chief and Comptroller General of Prisons to resign for dereliction of duty or to be queried by the Commander-in-Chief, the president is now quoted to have bought into the propaganda by the IGP that IPOB was involved even when IPOB according to reports, denied ever being involved? Where are the solid evidences, and when was forensic investigations by police carried out or do they work by beer parlour rumours?

“Why the haste to deploy the military to the East if there is no agenda already packaged long ago only waiting for the trigger to now launch the planned attack? Is the government rewarding failures of all the relevant heads of Security institutions who went to bed and were deep asleep or pretended to be asleep when these Godforsaken Violent Criminals hit the prisons and destroyed the entire facility belonging to the Police and yet the Military has a base somewhere only a few minutes walk from where these gunmen attacked in Obinze?

“Where was the governor of Imo State during the attack that lasted several hours that even motor park touts videoed? We are calling on the United Nations to note that there is a plan to carry out genocide against innocent Igbo citizens in the guise of looking for IPOB? The United Nations and the international community must intervene now to stop the Rwanda-type genocide that we fear will happen.

“The Nigerian government must never be allowed to repeat the genocide that was carried out against Igbo before the war in the 1960s

“We will hire private investigators allowed by the new police Act to independently unravel the actual source or sources of the plot against the South East.

“The Central government must not behave like it is out to degrade, decimate and destroy the South East.

“Igbo in diaspora who have contacts with World leaders should stop sitting on the fence. Your homeland is about to be desecrated; will you not speak out or are you comfortable with these attacks which initially was coloured as targeting security forces and National Security Institutions? And now without any sort of investigations, those who are privileged to have been nepotistically appointed into National Offices are now seeking to execute their anti-Igbo agenda.

“Tell us whether it is ethically, legally, morally right for these same police, military, DSS that failed to protect public institutions and their officers most of whom serving in the East especially the police to now be drafted to unleash violence on innocent people.”

Gunmen Killed Nigerian Soldier One Week To His Wedding

Faruk Yusuf is a military personnel working with the Nigerian Navy. Mr Faruk was posted to Onitsha in Anambra state. He is prepared to tight the knot next week but his life was cut short by gunmen who killed him in Onitsha, Anambra state of Nigeria.

The late Faruk Yusuf hailed from Unguwan Sarki area of Biu local government area in Borno state. Before he join the Nigerian navy, late Faruk Yusuf was appointed as the Adhann to the mosque due to his dedication and commitment.

The naval authority in Anambra state has already launched an investigation into the murder of Faruk Yusuf. A manhunt was initiated to nab the assailants who murdered an officer of the Nigerian Navy as assured by the authorities.

This is indeed wickedness of the highest order by these gunmen. The cold blood murder of a military personnel will never be overlooked by the authorities. We hope to hear the timely apprehension of these gunmen in order to avoid further reoccurrence.

Killing someone before his wedding is indeed very heartbreaking and condemnable. This is a moment of great agony for the relatives, friends and family of the deceased. May his soul rest in perfect peace Amen.

27 year old nurse dies after AstraZeneca vaccination

A nurse was reportedly dead on Friday after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine in Georgia’s southwestern city of Akhaltsikhe on Thursday.
The 27-year-old nurse, Megi Bakradze, who developed an alleged anaphylactic reaction after receiving the first shot of the vaccine, died after being transported to a hospital in Tbilisi, local Interpressnews reported.

The report said four cities, Khelvachauri, Keda, Shuakhevi and Khulo in the western region of Adjara has suspended the vaccination process.

Earlier on Thursday, after assessing the case, Georgian Health Minister Ekaterine Tikaradze announced that Georgia will continue using the AstraZeneca vaccine despite the recent case of an alleged complication.

She said the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the possible risks.

Georgia received the first 43,200 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines on Saturday.

Vaccination of health workers across the country started on Monday, with over 3,000 people vaccinated as of Friday.

Georgia on Friday reported 360 new COVID-19 cases, taking the national count to 276,796, according to the country’s National Center for Disease Control and Public Health.

Politics / Dangote’s Business Tactics Harmful To Nigerian Economy: U.S. by sunnybobonwa: 8:37am On Mar 13, 2021
Dangote’s business tactics harmful to Nigerian economy: U.S.

The United States described the Dangote Group of Companies’ business strategies as disastrous to the Nigerian economy.

Owned by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, it is the largest conglomerate in West Africa with over 30,000 employees.

A report published in 2010 on Wikileak’s website said even though Dangote played a major role in Nigeria’s economy, “many products on the country’s import ban list are items in which it has major interests.”

“Although an undiluted success in terms of wealth accumulation, Dangote personifies the duality in Nigeria’s economy,” the American government said while maintaining that the duality “presents a dilemma for country’s economic policy.”

It accused Dangote Group of blocking investment that the company may see as major competitors, noting that “Weighing everything in the balance, we believe the Dangote model is harmful to Nigerian and American interests in the long run.”

The American government further warned, “Unfortunately, the Dangote model will likely be the one most emulated until its beggar-thy-countrymen contradictions become more apparent.”

It is safe to say the assertion of the U.S. government has been evident in some of the tactics employed by the conglomerate.

Dangote Group faced wide criticisms in the past years over what detractors described as favouritism from the Nigerian government.

The company faced backlashes after it called for a total ban on tomato importation in 2019 when it started its tomato processing subsidiary.

Barely two weeks ago, the conglomerate proposed a provision in the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) seeking to ban the importation of oil by companies without refining licences, which according to the company, will help spur investments in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

Dangote also recommended that the volume of fuel imported should be distributed according to what each refinery produces.

Aliyu Suleiman, a chief strategist at Dangote, suggested the anti-competition approach during a visit by members of the National Assembly’s joint committee on PIB to the company’s project site.

The group proposed that only companies with licences to refine crude oil should import fuel whenever demand surpass available fuel or when a refinery is undergoing maintenance.

The recommendation came at the time Dangote Group was on the verge of completing a 650,000 barrels-per-day refinery in Lagos.

Financial experts, however, said the Dangote refinery should not be allowed to become a monopoly in the manner of the state-run NNPC, although it remained unclear how the conglomerate would be prevented from holding a monopoly if the controversial clause makes it into the PIB.

This is also evident in the reopening of land borders to Dangote Group in November last year, when it was allowed to transport its products to neighbouring West African countries.

Nigeria had shut its land borders in August to give room for the consumption of home-grown products, but the access granted to the company was said to be based on an authorisation issued by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.

A businessman and founder of Stanbic IBTC, Atedo Peterside, faulted the move.

He asserted that it portrayed Nigeria’s economy as favouring only the well-connected.

“Allowing legitimate exporters and importers to move their goods across the border should be a no-brainer,” Mr. Peterside said in a tweet.

“Why refuse everybody else and allow only one company (Dangote)?”

He added, “This is why some of us argue that the Nigerian economy is rigged in favour of a handful of well-connected persons.”

A spokesman for Dangote Group Tony Chiejina declined repeated requests for a reaction to the damning allegations, insisting instead that our reporter should visit him at the company’s headquarters in Lagos before comments could be provided.

UK Man Becomes Second Person To Be Cured Of HIV

A 40-year-old man from London is believed to have become the second person in the world to be cured of HIV. Adam Castillejo remains free of the virus 30 months after he stopped anti-retroviral therapy, doctors said according to a report by the Independent.

A stem-cell treatment he underwent for cancer also cured him of HIV, according to a study published in the medical journal The Lancet.

The first person cured of HIV was Timothy Brown, initially known only as the “Berlin patient”, in 2011. He received a similar treatment and was found to be free of the virus after three-and-a-half years.

Donors of the stem cells received by Castillejo have an uncommon gene that gives them protection against HIV.

Castillejo, now known in the medical community as the “London patient”, has no detectable active HIV viral load in his blood, semen, or tissue. He was declared free of the virus just over a year ago.

According to scientists, stem cell transplants appear to halt the virus’ ability to replicate itself inside the body by replacing the patient’s own immune cells with donor ones that resist the infection.

Tests carried out on Castillejo suggest 99 percent of his immune cells have been replaced by donor ones.

Lead researcher Professor Ravindra Kumar Gupta, of the University of Cambridge, said:

This represents HIV cure with almost certainty. We have now had two and a half years with anti-retroviral-free remission. Our findings show that the success of stem-cell transplantation as a cure for HIV, first reported nine years ago in the Berlin patient, can be replicated.

However, the “high-risk” stem-cell treatment is aggressive and was primarily used to treat the patient’s cancers, not their HIV.

Existing HIV drugs remain highly effective and enable people living with HIV to live long and healthy lives.

Prof Gupta said the treatment is “only used as a last resort for patients with HIV who also have life-threatening hematological malignancies”.

There is also no absolute certainty that Castillejo or Brown’s HIV will never return, as both patients still have remnants of the virus in their bodies.

Northern Christians will be granted political asylum in Biafra – Nnamdi Kanu

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has said Northern Christians have nothing to worry about concerning Nigeria’s disintegration.

Kanu declared that the Northern Christian community would be granted political asylum in Biafra when it cedes from Nigeria.

He stressed that Biafra would not allow Christian communities in the North to be decimated by Sharia.

Politics / Nigerians Don’t Know What Is Coming, They Are Still Ignorant — Mailafia by sunnybobonwa: 10:09am On Mar 10, 2021
Nigerians don’t know what is Coming, they are still ignorant — Mailafia

Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr Obadiah Mailafia, has said it will be unfortunate if Nigerians still cannot see the handwriting on the wall as insecurity continue to plague the country.

Obadiah in an interview with The Punch Newspaper on Thursday, once again, alleged that the ongoing security challenges facing the country is the aftermath of a well thought-out plan by certain individuals in the North, to take power away from the South.

He said many of the bandits currently troubling the country, were originally sponsored to ensure former President Goodluck Jonathan by all means, never retains his seat beyond 2015.

He said, “During the 2015 elections they brought in thousands of foreigners into this country, armed them because it was a case of if Goodluck Jonathan doesn’t surrender, there will be war. They were ready for civil war; they were not ready for peace.

“Of course, Jonathan handed over to them and then they turned their backs on the hoodlums and the hoodlums said ‘look, you brought us here and we are still here’.”

This isn’t the first time Mailafia made such weighty allegation against Northern powers, in the country.

Last year, in the height of the covid-19 pandemic and the scorch of months of lockdown, the Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress in the last election, also alleged without mentioning a name, that one of North’s Governors, is the sponsor of Boko Haram.

He said, “Some of us also have our intelligence networks. I have met with some of the bandits; we have met with some of their high commanders – one or two who have repented – they have sat down with us not once, not twice.

“They told us that one of the northern governors is the commander of Boko Haram in Nigeria. Boko Haram and the bandits are one and the same. They have a sophisticated network. During this lockdown their planes were moving up and down as if there was no lockdown.

“They were moving ammunition, moving money, and distributing them across different parts of the country.”

He also said Boko Haram had already infiltrated southern Nigeria, adding that their plan was to spark a second civil war.

The former CBN deputy governor, who holds a PhD from Oxford University in the United Kingdom, said he was not one to make spurious and unfounded allegations.

He added, “They are already in the South, in the rain forests of the South. They are everywhere. They told us that when they finish these rural kiIIings, they will move to phase two. Phase two is that they will go into urban cities, going from house to house kiIIing prominent people. I can tell you this is the game plan.

“By 2022, they want to start a civil war in Nigeria. Don’t joke with what I am saying I have a PhD from Oxford University. I am a central banker, we don’t talk nonsense . I have this from the highest authority, some of the commanders of Boko Haram,” he added.

Mailafia also said he was convinced that some foreign powers were behind the bandits.

“There are certain world powers that want to destroy our country. That is what I believe. There was a container load of weapons that were brought in from Turkey. Another time some were brought in from Iran. But nobody probed further and everything was swept under the carpet and that was the end of it,” he said.

Some gunmen attacked the Iboko Division Police Station in the Izzi local government area of Ebonyi State in southeastern Nigeria in the early hours of Monday.

A police station was similarly attacked by gunmen in Akwa Ibom state on Monday.

It is not clear, for now, if the attacks on police facilities, which are increasing lately in the Southeast and South-South regions, are coordinated.

Details of the Ebonyi attack were not available at the time of the report.

The attackers are said to have set the building on fire with incendiary bombs.

Kano police conclude investigations, says Hisbah commander arrested for sleeping with married woman in hotel not guilty

There was uproar on social media last week after a top commander of Hisba was spotted inside a Hotel with a married woman.

The issue has sparked controversy, especially among those who have expressed dissatisfaction with the Hisban’s activities in the state.

A call was made for the Kano state government to take action against the officer who was arrested by the police and was insisting of not guilty.

However, the Kano State Police Command has conducted their investigation and found out that the accused officer was not guilty of the charges leveled against him.

The Kano State Police Command has acquitted a Hisban officer of allegedly seeing with wife at a hotel.

The force made this known through its spokesperson DSP Abdullahi Kiyawa who stated that ”

We are convinced that it was this girl who was being harassed by her husband that caused her to come out and try to enter the barracks.

The accused officer only came to her and tried to keep her in someone else’s house, which was later picked up by the owner, who said there was a place for her to be kept since it was a VIP hotel.

The officer was told that she had been taken to the hotel and when he heard this, he bought some food and went to the hotel to give it to her. We were on patrol when we heard a movement that we did not trust and we collected it.

It was only later that we did some research and found out that it was almost ‘outside’ and that it was her husband who had thrown her into a trance. “Trying to get women into prost-itution has helped to ensure that she is kept out of the barracks,” said Haruna Abdullahi Kyawa.

The widow narrated how policemen shot and killed her husband while testifying in a petition, marked 2020/IIP-SARS/ABJ/81, filed by Chief Peter Ikechi and other members of Odekpe community in Anambra State, alleging death in custody, arbitrary arrest and detention, unlawful use of firearms resulting in extra-judicial killing and abuse of office.

The widow, who said she was a farmer like the deceased, informed that she and her late husband, Aboy, were in their house at Odekpe community eating on the fateful day when four men in police uniform came into their house.

According to her, they shot her husband in the stomach, adding that as of the time of the incident, she was still pregnant with the baby she carried to the investigation panel.

“It was the police people who killed my husband. We were in the house eating when the policemen came into the house and shot him.

“He was not shot on the road; he was shot in the house. He was eating when the policemen came to shoot him. I saw it when he was shot in the stomach.

“I was present when my husband was shot and he died on the spot. I was pregnant with this child I am carrying before he was killed.

“The policemen were four in number but I don’t know anyone of them,” she told the panel.

She informed further that after her husband was shot, she started shouting and calling for help, adding that villagers later came and took his body to the mortuary.

According to her, the deceased represented the Odekpe community during meetings and there was a communal clash between her community and another community, called Alor.

While being cross-examined by counsel for the police, Godwin Ijeomah, the woman informed that there was a police station at Odekpe, adding that she reported the killing of her husband to the police.

The widow informed the panel that she had 11 children together with him, adding that, “since the death of my husband, I cannot explain how life has been with me.”

Asked by Ijeomah, when she learnt about her husband’s death, she said, “I was told on December 9, 2020, that he was dead. They took him in June and I heard he was dead in December. They didn’t tell me the circumstances leading to his death.”

Politics / Former PDP Spokesman, Olisa Metuh, Returns, Goes Philosophical. by sunnybobonwa: 6:41am On Feb 25, 2021
Former PDP spokesman, Olisa Metuh, returns, goes philosophical

THE embattled former national publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh got a triumphant reception in Anambra State yesterday from the PDP and went philosophical over his travails.

Metuh travelled abroad for medical treatment after he was discharged by the court.

Thousands of PDP supporters from the 21 local government areas of Anambra State, waving party flags, trouped to the border town of Amansea and danced for several hours while waiting for his arrival from Enugu.

Their action caused traffic gridlock in Awka for hours as they marched several kilometers from Amansea to the PDP state secretariat in the heart of the state capital, where a reception was held in his honour.

In an emotion –laden speech, Metuh said he was grateful to God for saving him from the jaws of death.

He said: “I have been to the lowest, deepest end of the valley. I have wrestled with the demons. I wrestled with the devils. The Almighty God has saved me. For that, I commit the rest of my life to the service of God and the people.

“What I passed through was not easy. It was like an armed robber who came into someone’s house and removed all the person’s belongings and even defiled his wife in the process and went on to beat up his children and the person could not do anything because the robber was armed.

“When we have power, we should know how to use it because at the end of the day, all of us will die.

“My message to PDP is hope, forgiveness and unity. We should not continue to dwell on the wickedness upon us. Rather, we should sow happiness, love; we should not sow bitterness.

He told the people that PDP lost the 2015 presidential election and that APC did not win the election, even as he added that the true story would be left for another day.

He listed many people who assisted him while he was at Kuje Prison, among them were some of the Anambra governorship aspirants for the November 6 election. Those he specifically mentioned were Emeka Etiaba, Chief Chris Azubogu, Dr. Obiora Okonkwo, Val Ozigbo, Ugochukwu Okeke, among others.

In his speech, the state chairman of PDP, Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu said Metuh really went on a long journey and thanked God that he came back successfully.

He said: “We welcome our brother, Chief Olisa Metuh to his home state, Anambra. It has been a long journey. He is a great man. Great men pass through challenges and turbulent times and those are things that make them great indeed.

“Our brother faced an unprecedented political persecution because as the national spokesmen of PDP, the government of the day considered him the greatest foe for doing nothing other than that he was ensuring that the image of PDP was positively put forward to Nigerians. He committed no offence and for want of what to do, they framed up charges against him.

“They even refused to grant him bail to go for medical treatment because they alleged that he would abscond. But thanks to God, the appellate court found out that the lower court was clearly biased and there was no justice served at that level.

“Following the decision of the appellate court, our brother went abroad for medical treatment and we thank God that he is back here in Nigeria. He did not run away and he did not decide to stay back in London. We are happy he is back hale and hearty.

“We want to assure you that your sacrifices to the PDP will never be in vain. PDP will never forget the man, Olisa Metuh because as the spokesman of the party, he was a trail blazer. We believe that at the fullness of time, the Almighty God will vindicate the just. We urge you to continue the good work and never relent.” According to Nwobu, Nigerians have seen the APC change, regretting that everybody is groaning as insecurity has become the order of the day in all the six geopolitical zones of the country.

“Our economy has nosedived beyond redemption and nepotism has become the order of the day. So that change mantra has become the nemesis of Nigerians and we believe that come 2023 PDP will bounce back.

He said the victory march would start from Anambra State as the November 6 election draws near, assuring the people that the government of PDP would put behind what he called ‘the bad government of APGA’ in the state.

No fewer than 13 persons have been confirmed dead, while over 40 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a rain of 10 rocket attacks on Maiduguri by suspected Boko Haram, yesterday.
As at the time of filing the report Tuesday night, a team of security, military, Civilian JTF and humanitarian workers were still combing the town for corpses even as the injured were assisted to the hospital.

Initial count of corpses has it that 13 persons were lost even as over 40 persons were reportedly injured.
The major casualties were recorded at a football pitch in Gwange near the House of late Gen Mamman Shuwa, who was one of the earlier casualties of insurgency in the state.
At the football pitch, nine boys who were playing football early evening were killed by the shot rockets.
Many others were injured at the football pitch by the rockets, which many said were 10 in number fired simultaneously.
Other parts of the town were not spared the rocket launch believed to have been shot to destabilize the town, paving way for a massive attack by the insurgents.
At Adam Kolo part of the town, the rockets killed four persons and got many others injured.

Multiple sources said four persons were killed in the explosion in the area, which also resulted in injuries to many others.
One of the source, said a Mercedes Benz parked in the area was totally damaged.
He said that the corpses were removed and taken to the State Specialist Hospital.
He said those that were injured were equally assisted to the hospital to be treated.
When our correspondent drove to the area at about 6:30 to have a clear picture of happenings, the entire area was cordoned off by Civilian JTF and some soldiers.

Many people were seen fleeing into other parts of the town with fear that it may be a prelude to further attacks.
One of those that spoke, said: “this is strange, in all the years of the attack on Maiduguri, we have not seen such massive rocket landing on us.
“We just need to flee into town for it is getting dark and we do not know what lies ahead.”
The military had to push the insurgents who were stationed around the town away with air bombardment to stop the town from getting infiltrated by the insurgents.

One of the top security sources, who was contacted told our correspondent that he could not talk as they were still involved in getting those injured to the hospital and getting the town secured from being infiltrated.

All attempts to get the military and other security agencies to talk on the incident officially was unsuccessfully as messages sent to their known spokesmen were not replied and call to their mobile lines were also not picked.

FG knows hideouts of killer-herdsmen, bandits— Sheikh Ahmad Gumi

The Islamic cleric and peace negotiator, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has said that the Federal Government knows the hiding place of the herdsmen and bandits involved in clashes with farmers, kidnappings and other criminal activities.

Sheikh Gumi said that the government was only now playing safe because it realised that the former approach of attacking the bandits frontally was not working.

The Islamic cleric said this on Channels TV “Politics Today” on Monday, when asked why he can locate and hold dialogue with the bandits, while government authorities cannot find them.

Gumi said: “They (government) know. They see them (bandits) by aerial view. But the military has learned its lesson.

“The first approach they had— when they go in and start killing— they realised is the wrong way and that they were producing a monster. They are now careful.

“The only element I am adding now is ‘look, don’t just wait and watch, go in and negotiate’.”

Gumi also said Fulani herders feel their existence is being threatened, so they cross borders to defend their kinsmen each time they are attacked.

He also noted that the Fulani bandits were not Boko Haram, noting, however, that “We have to be very careful.

“If the pressure is too much, I am afraid they can be influenced by Boko Ham. We have seen the signs that Boko Haram is going to infiltrate them.”
