Education / Don't Be Busy, Be Productive by Suntwist: 4:04pm On Oct 26, 2021
DON’T BE BUSY, BE PRODUCTIVE
How many times have you used the word ‘Busy’?

“I’m busy, I’m so busy. I’ve been busy” it’s something we keep on saying as if it’s an achievement. You could spend the whole day running around, attending meetings, answering calls, responding to emails…but realize that by the end of the day you couldn’t accomplish anything of significance.

We would say being busy is something like a mindset people have, but if we take close look at it we would see that most part of it is not positive. ‘Busy’ has been used as an excuse not to be up and doing in all aspects of your life.

Now the question is who isn’t busy?
As a student you go to classes from morning to evening, get back home, rest, read, do your assignments, etc. You’re busy.

If you’re a parent and try to carve out time for your kids to help them with their assignments. Giving them listening ears when they need someone to talk to, taking them out, doing the house chores. You’re busy

If you’re trying to learn a skill about something you are passionate about. You’re busy

Busy people have great work ethics, which is why they’re always busy, they work hard but don’t work smart. As it is easier to be busy and more difficult to be more productive. Productivity requires strategic thinking, being focused, and having a positive mindset towards what you want to achieve. Have you noticed that busy people, stay late at work, do rush around to get things done and yet seem to accomplish very little. You could easily be wasting a lot of time on meaningless tasks, getting distracted by one thing or another and you see time has gone.

There’s a distinction between being busy and getting things carried out the right way as it directly impacts your fulfillment.

To be busy means you don’t have time for anything while being productive means having time for things that are priorities.

Busy people tend to accomplish their daily routine by cramming their to-do’s list. Trying to get everything done even when they know they have a lot to do and it won’t be possible to do everything at once. They end up not getting done in the right way. While productive people cut their workload in order to get things done in the right way, they focus on being effective first then efficient. They look for better ways to achieve a good result.

Here is the difference between being Effective and being Efficient
Effective; finding the maximum surest manner to do something.

AND

Efficiency; following each step of a large task and making sure it is accomplished quickly.

Busy people do multitask, this causes divided attention, this damages efficiency and encourages quantity over quality. Productive people know how to manage their time and plan ahead in order to prioritize more important tasks first.

Busy people do say “YES” to everything so as to fill their schedules with things that will keep them busy but don’t change their life. But a productive person learns how to say yes/no depending on the task being given. Productive humans choose when to say yes wisely because they know each ‘yes’ they say will be time-consuming for them. They also know that saying ‘yes’ to the wrong things will make them tread through the wrong paths. They say ‘no’ to things in order to have enough time for things that matters.

Being productive means you set boundaries. Being productive is about setting priorities, taking one task at a time, knowing what you’re good at, your weakness, and working on them.

As we’ve seen that it’s possible to be busy and not be productive, it just depends on how you’re able to make good use of your time and create a schedule that is easy to follow.

A person who is productive is also a person who is busy, but a person who is busy is not always a person who is productive.

Be Intentional and Stay Productive

DO NOT FLATTER
‘Appreciation makes a day, even changes a life. Your willingness to put it all into words is all that is necessary’—Margaret Cousins.

Being appreciative is one of the things most people find hard to do. An honest appreciation of little things could go a long way, it could put a smile on a person’s face.

Don’t let your ego stop you from appreciating others. The willingness to put your appreciation into words is necessary, so you should try to say “thank you” to people no matter the weight of what they’ve done for you. The two simple words “thank you” don’t get used enough.

Now let’s talk about our workplace…
If you are a leader in your workplace you should get used to the words “thank you” as it is your responsibility to thank your staff members regularly. This appreciation motivates them to do more and to do better.

Being honest with your appreciation doesn’t mean you are weak, NO don’t think like that. Don’t think if you keep appreciating your staff they would take you for granted, never that’s not possible. No human will complain you thank them too much, but they will remember if you never recognize them or their work. A personal thank you to your workers may supply them with a burst of power/energy and enthusiasm to pursue greater goals.

Appreciation can also play an important role in mental health. When you always criticize a person it could affect their mental health.

Do not flatter, it does more harm than good. Flattery is cheap Praise, flattery is telling the other person precisely what he/she thinks about him/herself.

The difference between flattery and appreciating others is that Appreciation is sincere, flattery is insincere. Appreciation does come from the heart but flattery just comes from your mouth. Appreciation is selfless, flattery is selfish.

There is a philosophy that says “Do not be afraid of the enemy who attacks you, be afraid of the friends who flatter you”.

Do not criticize or condemn anyone, we are dealing with humans who are creatures of emotions not creatures of logic. Be lavish in your praise and people will cherish your words and treasure them and repeat them over a lifetime.

One of the most neglected virtues of our daily existence is APPRECIATION. Always show appreciation.

Health / Why Do I Get Hungry? by Suntwist: 11:39am On Oct 13, 2021
Unravel the Mystery behind Your Incessant Hunger

Hunger is your body’s natural way to tell you that it needs food. Hunger is a biological drive to eat and it’s often associated with a rumbling stomach, weakness and in some rare cases, headache. It is a normal and good thing to get hungry because your body relies on food for energy. Although most people can go several hours before feeling hungry this isn’t the case for everyone. Some people just can’t stop putting food in their mouth at all times and for them, it feels as though there is a hole in their stomach that drains all the food away.

But if you keep getting hungry, even after a meal then something could be going on with your health. If you keep getting hungry all the time you should visit the doctor.

A medical term used to describe extreme hunger is called POLYPHAGIA also known as Hyperphagia.

Here are some reasons why you get hungry
Low blood sugar:
The condition of hypoglycemia can cause hunger. In adults and children older than 10 years, hypoglycemia is uncommon except as a side effect of diabetes treatment. Hypoglycemia is a condition that happens when the glucose in a person’s body drops to very low levels. In severe cases, people with hypoglycemia may act drunk because they may mumble their words or have trouble walking. Other symptoms may include: pale skin, shaking, sweating, etc.

When you don’t have enough sleep:
Getting adequate sleep is important for your health. When you don’t get enough sleep or rest, it could affect the hormones in your body that controls hunger. People who lack sleep do have a bigger appetite and find it hard to feel full. Sleep is required for the proper functioning of your brain and immune system. When you rest well, it helps to regulate a hormone called ghrelin which helps in appetite control. Lack of sleep leads to higher ghrelin levels and lower leptin levels, even if you eat you may be feeling hungrier than normal.

When you don’t take enough protein:
Protein plays an important role in appetite control by regulating hunger hormones. It has a reducing property that helps to reduce the calories you consume. Eating some protein with each meal or snack, rather than all at once, may help keep appetite steady throughout the day, Protein is satiating; it helps you feel fuller without having to eat more. Protein also impacts our hunger and satiety hormones: ghrelin and leptin. It helps reduce ghrelin levels (the hormone that tells us it’s time to eat) and may increase leptin sensitivity (the hormone that signals to us that we’re full).

Boredom:
Some people may confuse being bored for hunger and this causes them to eat more.

Stress:
When you are tense your body releases a hormone known as the stress hormone which is called cortisol. This hormone tends to increase your feeling of hunger. Most people tend to consume or crave foods that are high in sugar, calories, etc. when they are stressed because it might be a way their body will want to block off the part of the brain that causes you to worry.

Medication:
Some drugs are capable of making you eat more when taken. If you noticed an increase in your appetite since you’ve started taking a particular medication you should visit your doctor if there are other drugs you could take.

Pregnancy:
Most women during pregnancy experience an increase in appetite. This is because the baby needs enough nutrients to grow. At this time most women will experience an increase in their size during the first 3 months.

Type 2 Diabetes:
Excessive hunger could be one of the symptoms of type 2 diabetes. Diabetes causes glucose to stay in the blood instead of going into the cells which use glucose as a source of energy. This makes a person feel tired and hungry. Symptoms include; increased hunger, frequent urination, excessive thirst, etc. weight gain is most likely to occur in type 2 diabetes despite increased hunger.

People do get hungry all the time for many reasons. There are ways you could reduce this hunger:

Consuming less alcohol
Eating less sugar and salt
Drinking more water
Taking more protein and fiber

Increased/excessive hunger known as polyphagia could also be a side effect of some medications, don’t attempt to treat changes in your appetite using appetite suppressants without talking to your doctor first. If you keep having a constant feeling of hunger and also drastic weight loss visit your doctor.

Agriculture / Agribusiness by Suntwist: 3:03pm On Oct 12, 2021
Most people view agriculture as a profession that includes poor and overworked farmers with antiquated tools on a rural farm. The young adults still think that agribusiness is a poor man’s occupation, they all want a white-collar job. Agribusiness isn’t something that pops up in our minds, we tend to think about other less strenuous means of making money, a profession that people won’t laugh at.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), over 70% of the world’s needs are met by small farmers.

What does Agribusiness entail?
Agribusiness is a business sector that encompasses all economic activities related to farming such as crop production, farm machinery, breeding, chemicals, distribution, marketing, and sales. It is the combination of the word “agriculture” and “business” and refers to any business related to farming. In developed countries, essential activities of agriculture are carried on other lands away from the farm. These other activities include storage, processing, and preservation of the products that are separated from basic farming. Also, the production of fertilizers, farm equipment, etc. is different from manual farm work. Agriculture has now expanded into different sectors.

Farmers rear animals and cultivate fruits and vegetables using sophisticated types of machinery, farmers are also using everything from drawings to GPS to track their harvesting operations. These types of machinery have been designed to drive themselves and as a result, the harvesting and production process becomes twice or even three times faster, what defines an agribusiness is innovation.

The three sectors involved in Agribusiness are:
The agricultural input sector
The production sector
The processing-manufacturing sector
There are three components of Agribusiness which are:
Breeding: This is a branch of agriculture that involves rearing animals for food products or the breeding of plant species to produce a genetically enhanced crop seed.
Machinery and Equipment: This is one of the biggest segments in an agribusiness, it refers to all types of farm machinery like tractors, shovels, cutlass, etc.
Agrichemical/Agrochemicals: These are fertilizers, pesticides, etc. used on the Farm.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE SETTING UP AN AGRIBUSINESS
Before you venture into any business you should know what products and services you will provide. This involves getting a business plan. This plan includes the services you will provide to make an adequate profit, the correct licenses to get, and an insurance policy to cover the business in case of emergencies.

Make intensive research: Before you decide on an idea, product, or service, it is important that you do a thorough research of the specific market you are planning to venture into.
Register your business and acquire licenses: This is an essential step to take, you need to get the appropriate licenses to set up a business. Also, there are four major steps to registering a company. They include: Acquiring a Director identification number, Acquiring Digital Signature Certificate, filling a new user registration, and incorporating the company. Many legal firms or individuals could help you through the process. There are several types of company registrations e.g. Limited Liability, private limited, public limited, partnership, proprietorship, etc.
Get enough funds: Seek the right form to get funds for your business. Getting a loan from the bank might be a good idea but also might be difficult due to the economy of the country. There are many alternative financing options available you could opt for any of them.
Set up your business on land: Now that you’ve gotten the appropriate licenses for your business, you will need to get land to set up the business. Put a building on the land that is suitable for the purpose of the business.
Devise a marketing strategy: A marketing strategy will help you get to your targeted audience such as farmers, suppliers, etc. Without a strategic marketing plan, agribusiness will suffer.
When making a marketing strategy you should ask yourself some questions:
How is the future of the market?
What are the problems of consumers?
How challenging are the competitors
What is the present potential of the market?
How do you see your company in the market?
Agribusiness through its various value chains provides employment and helps to reduce the rate of poverty. It also serves as income for many people. It further increases the multifariousness of production to broaden the economic status. Thereby, transforming the agricultural sector towards an agro-industrial development.

Hey reader, SMILE!!!

I bet that felt good… smiling always feels good.

‘The value of smiling at Christmas’ was written by a department store in New York City, in recognition of the pressure its sales clerks were under during the Christmas rush, they came up with an advertisement philosophy that hits hard and will always put a smile on your face when you read. Follow the philosophy below;

It cost nothing but creates much.

It enriches those who receive, without impoverishing those who give. Smiles happen in a flash and the memory of it sometimes lasts forever. None are so rich they can along without it, and none so poor but are richer for its benefits.

It creates happiness in the home, fosters goodwill in a business, and is the countersign of friends. It is the rest to the weary, daylight to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and Nature’s best antidote for trouble. Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that no earthly good anybody till it is given away. And if in the last-minute rush of Christmas buying some of our salespeople should be too tired to give you a smiling face, may we ask you to leave one of yours? For nobody needs smiles so much as those who have none left to give.

“Your smiles will give you a positive countenance that will make people feel comfortable around you”.

___Les Brown

Smile now! Never mind how hard life has been, if you will remember all the time to smile now you will always be smiling. Your smiles should be a reflection of your inner soul’s state of ever-new joy. When we smile, we flex certain muscles in our faces. This movement tells the brain that we’re smiling which in turn initiates the release of ENDORPHINS.

What are Endorphins?
Endorphins are happy hormones, they can make us feel joyful and warm inside.

You should smile genuinely this helps to lighten your mood, some people smile most of the time but beneath that smiling is a face filled with sorrow, smiles are just a mask used to cover their real feelings.

‘Life is like a mirror, smile at it and it smiles back at you.

Smiling is not always the easiest thing to do, especially after you’ve been stressed. But if you could smile no matter what the situation you’ll feel better. It might be worth your while to fake a smile and see where it gets you.

Be sincere with your smile, start first thing in the morning as you greet yourself in the mirror smiling. As you go out today try smiling at a stranger, you will be surprised how hard it is for them to not smile back.

Did you know?
Forcing yourself to smile when you’re sad will actually elevate your mood. Just like fake it till you make it.
Smiling is a form of exercise, so work those facial muscles.
Smiling is a sign of happiness.
Smiles relieve stress.
Smiling helps to boost your immune system.
Smiles are known to be contagious.
Smiling is like medicine.

Education / Education; Your Door To The Future by Suntwist: 3:34pm On Oct 04, 2021
Education!!!

Our quest for knowledge is unending and will continue till planet earth exists.

Everyone knows that education is very important for our life, with it we can do lots of things. Education is the basic requirement nowadays for everything that we wish to do and all great leaders of this world, scientists, doctors, and engineers are educated, people.

Imagine a world where everyone is uneducated. We would perhaps never have worn clothes or eaten delicious food. Possibly, we would be walking around in the forest and climbing mountains, hunting for wild animals for flesh accompanied by leaves, roots, and fruits. Above all, you won’t be reading this article.

Education brings about an inherent and permanent change in a person’s thinking and capacity, it is a gradual process that brings positive change in human life and behavior. To earn a better life and live a comfortable life, a person needs to understand its value.

Education is the process of learning, imparting knowledge, skills, values, morals, and beliefs, usually from an experienced individual to a less individual. It is the best thing a parent can give to their offspring and also the best gift a nation can give to its citizens, it improves the quality of life and affects the total way of life. Quality and good education enhance the overall development of a child and the nation as a whole. It provides employment opportunities and a means of livelihood.

Education makes the interaction of countries and exchange of goods and services in terms of export and import. It allows foreign investment and breaks the communication barriers among countries. It refines an individual and the most profitable achievement someone can have.

Education is important for children because they are the future of the world, the pillars of the nation, to develop a country and the world the future should be secure and the children are the weapons to build the nation through knowledge and education.

Education is not just getting knowledge through books but can be learned practically.

Below are some educational quotes from Famous men.
– “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”

__Nelson Mandela

– “Education is the movement from darkness to light”

__Allan Bloom

– “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest”

__Benjamin Franklin

Education is the only valuable asset humans can achieve, it is important because it also helps us become rich. It teaches us how to recognize and utilize our skills and use them for a job or business. Every innovation, invention, and discovery made by mankind was due to education.

Some people think education is a waste of time but that’s not true. They do say it is better to put all those efforts working on the farm or doing other menial jobs, one thing they don’t know that without it there will be a limitation to what they can do.

Like we said earlier in this article that children are the future of the nation. They are the leaders of tomorrow. That is why we need to invest in them, equip them with knowledge and prepare them for what lies ahead of them.

Education is the only valuable asset humans can achieve, it is important because it also helps us become rich. It teaches us how to recognize and utilize our skills and use them for a job or business. Every innovation, invention, and discovery made by mankind was due to education.

Education is key and every child is entitled to one!

Health / Nutrition & Immunity by Suntwist: 2:26pm On Sep 29, 2021
Ever imagined what nutrition has to do with your Immunity?

The body system is like a city. When it has no army or defense system it gets defeated by external forces. Therefore our immune system serves as our army or defender, which tries to fight against invaders such as germs and keep them out, but if by any chance they get into the body system it deals with them.

As we differ in appearance and personality, so also our immune system differs from person to person which is a general rule. It is said that the immune system of an adult is stronger than that of a child as it has already been exposed to more antigens and developed more immunity. This is a significant reason why children get sick oftentimes compared to an adult or a teenager.

You might be wondering how this is possible; once an antibody is produced, a copy remains in the body so that if the same antigen re-appears, it can be tackled more quickly. This is why some diseases can only be contracted once, for instance, chickenpox can only be gotten once because there’s an antibody built up from a previous attack and it is ready to fight and prevent another attack. This is called immunity.

Humans have three (3) basic types of immunity called innate, adaptive, and passive:

Innate immunity
Every human is born with some level of immunity to invaders. Human immune systems, similar to those of many animals, will attack foreign invaders from day one. This innate immunity includes the external barriers of our body — the first line of defense against pathogens — such as the skin and mucous membranes of the throat and gut.
This response is more general and non-specific. If the pathogen manages to dodge the innate immune system, adaptive or acquired immunity kicks in.

Adaptive (acquired) immunity
This protection from pathogens develops as we go through life. Exposure to diseases or vaccines will help build a wall of antibodies to different pathogens. This is sometimes referred to as immunological memory because our immune system remembers previous enemies.

Passive immunity
This type of immunity is “borrowed” from another source, but it does not last indefinitely. For instance, a baby receives antibodies from the mother through the placenta before birth and in breast milk following birth. This passive immunity protects the baby from some infections during the early years of their life.

Who doesn’t want a healthy immune system? (Raise your hand. No one?) But did you know the role your diet plays in keeping it in top shape to protect you from toxins and infections?

Sadly, too many of us don’t eat enough of the fresh fruits, vegetables, and other foods we need to keep ourselves healthy year-round. Healthy foods provide many substances including vitamins and minerals to keep us strong and healthy. You can’t just eat an orange or grapefruit or pop a vitamin pill and expect one quick burst of vitamin C to prevent a cold and to boost your immune system.

“A truly healthy immune system depends on a balanced healthy diet over time,” says registered dietitian Maxine Smith.

“It’s like training for a battle and preparing your body ahead of time so it can throw a good punch when attacked by viruses, bacteria, and toxins. Other lifestyle practices such as regular exercise and good sleep will better prepare you for the battle.”

With some exceptions, it’s best to get your vitamins and minerals from your food rather than in pill form.
There is some evidence that various micronutrient deficiencies — for example, deficiencies of zinc, selenium, iron, copper, folic acid, and vitamins A, B6, C, and E — alter immune responses in animals, as measured in the test tube. However, the impact of these immune system changes on the health of animals is less clear, and the effect of similar deficiencies on the human immune response has yet to be assessed.

In addition to getting the right nutrition and living a healthy lifestyle as well as a strong immune system; every part of your body, including your immune system, functions better when protected from environmental assaults and bolstered by healthy-living strategies such as these:

Eat a balanced diet with whole fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and plenty of water. A Mediterranean Diet is one option that includes these types of foods.
Don’t smoke (or stop smoking if you do).
Drink alcohol in moderation; or not, at all.
Perform moderate regular exercise consistently.
Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep nightly: Try to keep a sleep schedule, waking up and going to bed around the same time each day. Our body clock, or circadian rhythm, regulates feelings of sleepiness and wakefulness, so having a consistent sleep schedule maintains a balanced circadian rhythm so that we can enter deeper, more restful sleep.
Aim to manage stress: This is easier said than done, but some healthy strategies that work well for individuals can be discovered. It can be exercise, meditation, a particular hobby, or talking to a trusted friend. Another tip is to practice regular, conscious breathing throughout the day and when feelings of stress arise. It doesn’t have to belong—even a few breaths can help. If you’d like some guidance, try this short mindful breathing exercise.
Wash hands throughout the day: when coming in from outdoors, before and after preparing and eating food, after using the toilet, after coughing or blowing your nose.
Like any fighting force, the immune system army marches on its stomach. Healthy immune system warriors need good, regular nourishment. One cannot overemphasize this factor. Scientists have long recognized that people who live in poverty and are malnourished are more vulnerable to infectious diseases.

However, Suntwist Nigeria Limited is here to ensure that you get the right nutrients, in the right proportion within your reach. We make good food readily accessible to all without you breaking the bank. We make your well-being our priority.

Agriculture / Hydroponics by Suntwist: 12:12pm On Sep 28, 2021
How many times have you walked out to your garden/farm and seen one of your plants thriving while its next-door-neighbor is drooping? In such situations, it is almost impossible to know which variable is negatively affecting your droopy plant. Could it be a pest problem? Are the nutrients in the soil different? Or has this helpless plant become a urinal for passers-by or animals?

With a hydroponic system, the exact condition the plant is being grown is known. As such, you can easily isolate variables and experiment! Once you find the perfect formula of light, pH balance, and nutrients, you can replicate success without always getting hit with curveballs.

“Hydroponics ?” “What’s that ?” “Sounds cool…sounds like it has something to do with healthy food or not ?”

So What is Hydroponics?

Hydroponics is a way to skip the soil, sub in a different material to support the roots of the plant, and grow crops directly in nutrient-rich water. Yes, technically and biologically, you can skip the soil.

Plants grow through a process called photosynthesis, in which they use sunlight and a chemical inside their leaves called chlorophyll to convert carbon dioxide (a gas in the air) and water into glucose (a type of sugar) and oxygen. Write that out chemically and you get this equation:

6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2

There’s no mention of “soil” anywhere in there—and that’s all the proof you need that plants can grow without it. What they do need is water and nutrients, both easily obtained from the soil. But if they can get these things somewhere else—say, by standing with their roots in a nutrient-rich solution—they can do without soil altogether. That’s the basic principle behind hydroponics. In theory, the word “hydroponics” means growing plants in water (from two Greek words meaning “water” and “toil”), but because you can grow plants without actually standing them in water, most people define the word to mean growing plants without using soil.

There are various hydroponics design systems but the core elements are essentially the same:

Freshwater- We are talking primo, filtered stuff with a balanced pH. Most plants like water with a pH level of around 6–6.5. You can adjust the acidity of your water with over-the-counter solutions found at your local hardware, garden, or hydroponic store.

Oxygen- Don’t drown your plants! In traditional farming, roots can get the oxygen needed for respiration from pockets of air in the soil. Depending on your hydroponic setup, you will either need to leave space between the base of your plant and the water reservoir, or you’ll need to oxygenate your container (think of bubbles in a fish tank), which you can accomplish by buying an air stone or installing an air pump.

Root Support- Even though you don’t need soil, your plant’s roots still need a little something to hold on to. Typical materials include vermiculite, perlite, peat moss, coconut fiber, and rock wool. Stay away from materials that might compact (like sand) or that don’t retain any moisture (like gravel).

Nutrients- Your plant is going to need plenty of magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, and other nutrients to stay healthy and productive –– just like plants growing in the ground need healthy soil and fertilizer. In growing plants without soil, the “plant food” should be included in the water supplied to feed the plants. While you can technically make your own nutrient solution, it’s easy to buy mixtures online and in stores.

Light- If you’re growing your plants indoors, you might have to invest in some special lighting. Each kind of plant will have a different requirement for the amount of light it needs and for the placement of lights (typically referred to as Daily Light Integral or DLI).

By closely observing and adjusting these foundational elements, you can begin to discover precisely what your plants need to thrive and replicate those conditions for every growth in the future.

Why Grow Without Soil?

This seemingly subtle shift in how we grow plants (skipping the soil, that is) is actually revolutionary– it allows growers to produce food anywhere in the world, at any time of the year, and to net higher yields with fewer resources. All thanks to hydroponics, you can have a farm right behind your restaurant that requires ultra-fresh produce! And when you’re growing hydroponically, you don’t have to hit pause for a season or risk crop loss from inclement weather.

Higher Yields

Hydroponically grown plants are certainly living the good life. Since roots are bathed in all the nutrients they need, plants spend more time growing upward and less time and energy growing extensive root systems to search for food.

Growth rates vary based on the type of system and quality of care, but hydro plants can mature up to 25 percent more quickly than the same plants grown in soil, with increased crop yield, to boot.

Fewer Resources

We bet you didn’t see this coming: hydroponic systems actually use less water than traditional soil-based systems. This is because closed systems aren’t subject to the same rates of evaporation. Plus, the water used in hydroponic systems can be filtered, re-populated with nutrients, and fed back to plants again so that water is constantly being recycled instead of wasted!

The hydroponic systems use up to 98 percent less water than traditional soil-based systems.

Other “resources” indoor hydroponic plants don’t need? Pesticides and other potentially harmful chemicals, since the hydro crops are protected from many of the pests and plant diseases found outdoors in soil-based farms.

In theory, you can grow any plant hydroponically but—as is always the case with gardening—some things inevitably do better than others. Fruit crops such as tomatoes, strawberries, cucumber, lettuces, and herbs, are among plants that do particularly well.

Agriculture / Agriculture And Culture In Nigeria by Suntwist: 1:17pm On Sep 27, 2021
For decades, agriculture has been associated with the production of essential food crops. At present, agriculture above and beyond farming includes forestry, dairy, fruit cultivation, poultry, beekeeping, mushroom, arbitrary, etc. Today, processing, marketing, and distribution of crops and livestock products, etc. Are all acknowledged as part of current agriculture? Thus, agriculture could be referred to as the production, processing, promotion, and distribution of agricultural products. Agriculture plays a critical role in the entire life of a given economy.

In Nigeria, we have different cultural practices which at times affect the way we behave, think and react, culture has an overarching impact on the individual and community. Culture can be defined as the ideas, customs, and social behavior of a particular people or society. “Culture encompasses religion, food, what we wear, how we wear it, our language, marriage, music, what we believe is right or wrong, how we sit at the table, how we greet visitors, how we behave with loved ones, and a million other things,” Cristina De Rossi, an anthropologist at Barnet and Southgate College in London, told Live Science.

Agriculture and culture intersect in the diversities obtainable in agricultural and behavioral aspects of the people which triggers the need for sustainable developments in agriculture. The word agriculture was derived from two Latin words; “agri”, which means field, and culture which has a dual meaning; to cultivate or a way of life. The dual meaning of this culture serves as a link between culture and agriculture.

Agriculture has been the dominant economy of Nigeria since the cultivation of crops and rearing of livestock has been the profession of our ancestors. When the word agriculture is being mentioned, most people view it in the aspect of its economic impact, how it has helped reduce the rate of unemployment, how many acres, how many farmers are available, profits to be gotten from it, etc. These are important factors to be considered but that is not all about agriculture, it is just a snapshot of what it entails. What is hardly mentioned is the second part of the word, “culture” of agriculture. Most people hardly talk about the heritage of agriculture, how it has been passed from generations. The variations in agriculture and culture are reflected in the different regional cultures like celebrations of the New yam festival in different regions in Nigeria.

That said, it automatically translates to the fact that the crops planted and animals reared will be based on the culture of the region and society. Since culture directly affects what we eat. It, therefore, means that crops planted and animals reared are based on what people in a particular region and culture eat. For example, the North is majorly dominated by Muslims. Their beliefs go against the eating of pork hence the region does not rear pigs. The Hausas are predominantly found in the north. The Hausa economy has rested on the intensive cultivation of sorghum, maize, millet, corn, etc.

Most of the Nigerian food is produced or cultivated in the northern part of Nigeria, so for this reason they sufficient supply of food. The Hausa eat a variety of foods that derive from their predominately agricultural livelihood. Hausa people also like to eat rice, millet, and maize. Such grain-based meals are grounded into flour food called Tuwo in their native language which can be eaten with a soup called kaka, dagegade, taushe. The soups are made with chopped tomatoes, peppers, onions, etc. Also, vegetables are being added which include Okra, pumpkin, and other leafy vegetables. A little amount of Meat, beans, peanuts, and milk are also added to provide the food with enough protein. The most popular and well-known dish is called Suya, a dried version of Suya is known as Kilishi. It is made of chicken, beef, or ram in a style of spicy kebab.

The Yoruba are predominantly found in the western part of Nigeria. The Yoruba people grow yam, corn, plantain, millet, groundnuts, peas as subsidiary crops. Cocoa is a major cash crop. The Yoruba diet comprises grains, starchy tubers, and plantains. These foods are taken with cultivated vegetables, fruits, nutritious vegetable oil, fish and meat, etc. One of the most popular food is a cassava made-like dumpling called Fufu, Amala which is made from yam flour, Iyan (pounded yam), and are taken with delicious like Ewedu, Gbegiri, Okra, Efo riro (Vegetable soup). Cultural relativism isn’t left out. As people from other cultures instead of questioning or condemning Yoruba culture embraced it with open arms. This act has created immense growth as it’s seen as a social norm in society.

The Igbos also called Ibo live mainly in the Eastern part of Nigeria. The Igbo economy has rested on the cultivation of taro, yam, cassava, melons, pumpkin, okra, and beans. Their principal export is palm oil and palm kernels. Their most important crop is yam. This is the reason for the New yam festival (Iri Ji) celebrating the harvest of new yams. The yam is pounded to a solid paste called pounded yam. And it is being eaten with different soups like Oha, Nsala, Okazi, Ofe Owerri, Akwu, etc. These are made from locally grown vegetables, fruit, and seeds. There is also Abacha, Ugba (Oil bean), Ukwa (breadfruit).

There is a relationship between agriculture and culture in the sense that the crops cultivated and cattle reared depend on the culture of the people in that region.

Agriculture development initiatives should enlighten farmers that are in the rural areas more about agriculture. It should also consider indigenous knowledge, local agricultural practices, climatic conditions, etc. for change. When all this is taken into consideration it encourages the spirit of harmony between people and the adoption of new technologies.

Food / Tips On How To Prepare Owo Soup. by Suntwist: 12:01pm On Sep 24, 2021
Since its weekend have you been thinking of what soup to prepare for the family, tired of repeating a regular routine of soup, or thinking of how to surprise your family with a new delicacy?

Well, we’ve got you covered; this article entails the recipe of an African dish. Owo soup is a sweet yellowish traditional soup of the Southern region of Nigeria. It is a delicacy enjoyed by the people of Benin, Delta, Itsekiri, Ijaw, Isoko. It is usually a mix of blended tomatoes and pepper.

The soup is enjoyed by millions daily. It is simple, it is quick, it tastes delicious. They are nice and they look fantastic.

The Owo soup recipe origin has not been clearly defined; because there has always been a loggerhead between the Urhobo people of Delta State and the Benin people in Edo State. However, there is a slight difference in how to make Benin Owo soup from that of Urhobo/Itsekiri Owo soup.

The recipe for Itsekiri Owo soup is quite moderate and you can always adjust to taste. It is easy to prepare and can be eaten with Yam, Plantain, Sweet potatoes, Boiled bananas, or any soup of your choice. The best part is, most of the ingredients are in your kitchen.

Moreover, the yellow color is gotten from the mixture of your native palm oil and potash. Certainly, the oil folds in beautifully into the soup making it look very attractive. It’s one of the Nigerian soups you will not see oil floating around the surface.

INGREDIENTS
Tomatoes
Habanero pepper (Rodo)
Crayfish
Salt
Palm oil
Goat meat or Assorted meat
Dried grounded pepper
Potash (Akanwu)
Onions (Chopped)
Smoked fish
Seasoning cubes

PREPARATION STEPS
Preparing to cook the owo soup start with the washing of cooking utensils.
Ensure the kitchen is clean and wear an apron.
Wash the meat and crayfish separately and put them on separate plates.
Wash the tomatoes and pepper then blend.
Put the washed meat into a pot, add chopped onions and seasoning cubes then boil for 15 minutes.
After the meat has boiled for 15 minutes pour the blended tomatoes and pepper, crayfish, and smoked fish. Boil for 5-10 minutes.
Dissolve the potash (Akanwu) with hot water and 2 seasoning cubes and leave it to boil for 3 minutes.
After it has boiled for 3 minutes, take it off the heat and allow it to cool down a bit.
Pour the palm oil into the pot, stir while pouring the palm oil. In the process of stirring the color will gradually change to yellowish color.
Put the pot back on the heat for about 1-2 minutes to warm up.
Potash is added to thicken the soup and voila…Your Owo soup is ready.

You could serve your Owo soup with any swallow of your choice or with boiled yam or plantain. Whichever you like, Owo Soup will not disappoint!

Don’t forget to leave a comment in the comment section. Enjoy the weekend!

Career / Do You Need A Side Hustle? by Suntwist: 4:18pm On Sep 13, 2021
“GOOD THINGS HAPPEN TO THOSE WHO HUSTLE” ----Anais Nin
This means good things don’t usually just fall into our hands and there’s no need hoping they will. Good things happen to those who work hard for them. Do you want to start a side hustle? Then get to it.
At times our salaries are not enough to pay our bills like electricity, house rent, buy groceries etc. and this keeps accumulating debts. Well it’s time to consider supplementing with an additional earnings.
Side hustles are a great way to earn extra income and gain extra revel in. It’s also an opportunity for entrepreneurs to explore their ardour without causing any disturbance to their work.
Everyone needs money, everyone wants money as money is very important in our daily activities. So tell me who doesn’t want a little extra cash? This is the one of the reasons why many of us are drawn to experimenting with a side hustle. A side hustle is a person’s first step toward monetary independence and versatility. For someone who has a lot of responsibilities which requires money, a side hustle is essential for an additional income.
A side hustle could be a way of becoming your own boss and not having to depend on your monthly salary.
You may ask yourself this question “How will I start a side hustle”?

• Set goals and make plans to achieve them: Goal is that thing that motivates a person, knowing you have the desired result to achieve. Without goals you might find yourself treading endless paths with no destination and also no direction as goals gives us directions.
Most entrepreneurs are successful because they’ve mastered how to set goals and work towards achieving those goals till they get their desired results. Apart from goals, a business plan is also important as it’s an essential tool for all entrepreneurs. It provides an overview of marketing strategies, the business aim and objective, competitors in the market place etc.
A good business plan gives you a pathway to your desired results, helps you know what’s important and motivates you whilst things gets tough along the way.
A SMART goal may be beneficial especially if you want to turn a side hustle to a full time career.

• Know your market place/be number one in your market place: You’ve simply have a primarily step forward by setting goals, mind-blowing ideas keeps flowing through your mind and you need to put these ideas to work. Before putting those ideas to work as an entrepreneur you would need to invest your time in market research before entering the market, this helps the entrepreneur to know their potential customer’s needs and wants. A good market report gives details about your competition and also the market trends.
To be first in the market place you should add a part or feature no one else is doing to your business. So take a good look at your competitors and think of that extra spice you could add to your business and can lay claim to being the first to start it.
NOTE; To disrupt the market you have to do something new and the only way to be in the position of success is by understanding your market and what your customers want. Also market research helps you know which areas your product/service needs improvement.

• Discover a target market/audience for your product before advertising: How should I market my product? How will I reach my target customer? What marketing strategy will be suitable for my audience? These are questions most entrepreneurs often ask themselves before they begin marketing campaigns. It can be difficult to market your product/service when you don’t have an audience.
The target market performs an important function in determining any future advertising and promotions. It is very important to know your market before embarking on the journey of a starting a business.

• First test tour ideas: Risk is one thing an entrepreneur should be ready to take, just few have the balls to take one. Some of the so called entrepreneurs don’t even take time on what they really want in a business.

Carrying out a test on your ideas before going into the business fully could likely save you from failures. One way to test your ideas is by setting up a demo of the business and see how you would feel about it, it also helps to know if the goal of the business is attainable and also put right the wrong.
The best way to get your side hustle moving is to flex those creative muscles.

Agriculture / Re: Coco Peat; A Planting Medium For Healthy Plants by Suntwist: 11:22am On Sep 10, 2021
Asides from the soil, there are other mediums that can be used to cultivate crops and one of them is the coco peat. The outside layer of husk that surrounds the shell of coconut comprises fibers that are being removed from the shells to make doormats, ropes, brushes, carpets, mattresses, etc. It is also used to make a cloud of powdery dust which is made into coco peat and used in gardening. Every part of a coconut is useful, from the outer components and inner content.

Coco peat is 100% organic, it has the ability to store and release nutrients to plants against leaching and buffer for an extended period of time. Unlike soil it doesn’t form mud, it is odorless, increases the shelf life of plants. It has oxygenation properties which are important for healthy root development. The coco peat is used for plants because it is light, easy to handle, and can be reused for up to 4 years. Its physical and biochemical properties make it resistant to bacterial and fungal growth. Loose coco peat is referred to as coco soil, the coco soil being a porous and well-drained medium helps the plant to have strong roots, thus making it an excellent medium for hydroponics

Coco peat is a wonderful growing medium, it can be used to grow the seeds of vegetables and flowers in seedling trays. It has a pH of 5.2 to 6.8 which neutral to slightly acidic, this makes it great to be mixed with alkaline garden soil. It has a moisture retention capacity that is very high, it can retain moisture up to eight times its volume, this factor makes it good for soilless gardening and hydroponic farming. It is an essential ingredient for various potting media like organic veggie-mix. Coco peat contains phosphorus, nitrogen, and high content of potassium, magnesium, and zinc. It has water-absorbing properties, 1kg of dried coco peat can expand up to 15 liters in water. It can retain many liters of water for several months, so plants are watered less frequently.

HOW TO MAKE COCO PEAT?
Get coconut husk and store it in a cool, dry, and clean place.
Pull out the fibers and dry them, chop them into small pieces with the help of a scissors or cutter.
Grind the chopped fibers into a fine powder, the coco fiber will be separated as fluff.
The fibers are being removed out of the coco peat with the help of a sieve.
Remove the fibers from the top of the sieve manually.
This peat should be washed with water to remove excess salts.
Soak the peat in water for about an hour.
Use your hands to squeeze water.
Dry the peat in sunlight for a day.
It is ready to be used.
The coco peat can be filled in the seedling tray for planting.

Here in Suntwist, we make use of Coco peat to grow the vegetables in the greenhouse, our vegetables grow in good health, are filled with enough nutrients, and are safe for consumption. We produce vegetables that are healthy, fresh, and nutritious. Every day we keep looking for the best ways to farm and explore agriculture. For more info on our greenhouse, click the link below

Happy New Month. As we will see in this essay, procrastination is not a rare phenomenon. Almost everyone is guilty of it at some point in their lives. So we ask ourselves this question – why do people procrastinate even when they are so busy most of the time? We live in the 21st century, where time is our most precious commodity. And yet, we waste this precious resource procrastinating our time away.

“Success is not obtained overnight. It comes in installments; you get a little bit today, a little bit tomorrow until the whole package is given out. The day you procrastinate, you lose that day’s success.”
Israelmore Ayivor.

Procrastination is one of the main barriers blocking you from getting up, making the right decisions, and living the dream life you’ve thought of. Ancient Greek philosophers like Aristotle and Socrates developed a word to describe procrastination and it’s called “Akrasia”. Akrasia is a fierce enemy that prevents you from doing what you’ve planned to do. Someone once said procrastination is the fear of success, people procrastinate because they are afraid of the success that they know will result if they move ahead now. Success is heavy, carries a responsibility with it, it is much easier to procrastinate and live on the ‘someday I’ll philosophy’.
When you procrastinate instead of working on important meaningful tasks, you find yourself performing trivial activities and you also waste time that you could be investing in something meaningful.

How to stop procrastinating;
- Have a To-do today list cause having a long to-do list tends to pile on, leading to procrastination.
- Make a habit list. When we have a habit list of things we want to learn helps in our personal development.
- Have a personal time with yourself to reflect on things and also plan.
- Focus more on the rewards of doing a task at the appropriate time.
- Make the consequences of procrastination more immediate.
- Make sure the task to be done is achievable.
Defer no time, delays have dangerous ends. Most people spend more time regretting things they haven’t done than the things they have done.
We hope in this new month, you find that courage to stop procrastination today and watch things change for the better.

Investment / Re: Own A Cashew-cassava Farm Now by Suntwist: 9:34am On Jul 26, 2021
Cashew farming has been known over the years to be very lucrative, as investing in them yields a lot of profit. If you're still wondering what is special about Cashew-Cassava, trust us, it has a lot of spec.

Intercropping is one big way to cash out in agriculture, and Cashew-Cassava plantation is a good example. It is a multiple cropping system that involves growing two or more crops in proximity. The main goal of intercropping is to produce greater yield on a piece of land by making use of resources or ecological processes that would be utilized by more than one crop.

Investment in Cashew farming is a long-term investment; it takes about 3-4 years for it to start producing its own fruit. This is why Cashew-Cassava cultivation is strongly advised, since Cassava is a perennial crop grown as an annual, and can be planted and harvested yearly.
The Cassava make up for the amount of time the Cashew takes before fruiting and this amounts to a truckload of profit. It's the rainy season, a good time to invest in your own Cashew-Cassava farm.

As for us in Suntwist, we are super-excited about the rainy season, and we are ready for the Cashew-Cassava planting season 2021.
