Want to be a better job applicant? Do you want to be hired from your resume or receive a job offer straight after your interview? It might be worth looking at your language. I’m not talking about adding the latest start up, corporate or leadership buzzwords or secret high flyers jargon to your repertoire. If that’s what you’re looking for, try the Shogarts Business Buzzword App You’ll be able to walk around uttering leadership gibberish such as “Moving forward, it’s time to act with strategic vigor and transform our team bandwidth “and “Looking forward to November, ideation will be key to our ability to impact the solutions holistically.”. And if you’ve ever found yourself saying you will “reach out” to someone, don’t. Unless you’re a member of the Four Tops. Unfortunately, I’m finding that sort of mumbo-jumbo increasingly common with job hunters nowadays. In fact, I could write a book about the many interviews I’ve had with people who used buzzwords to try to impress. Who were too busy thinking about their vertical and horizontal trajectories to actually explain to me what they could do. In life, It’s all about language; In life, whether you want to get a promotion, pay rise or a new job, you’ll succeed more often if you work on using the right language. It’s amazing what a differenceq it makes when you add some powerful words and phrases to your vocabulary. Words that will engage and inspire, convince, motivate and encourage people to come up with ideas, and inspire commitment. (By the way, the latter is the most important, if you really want the job). So, why don’t you take a look at my top 10 list of powerful words and phrases? It’s not a big or exhaustive list – just a collection I’ve picked up over the years – and please feel free to add your own in the comments section. 1. “How can I be a better leader?” Credit goes to James Kouzes for this one. Variations of the question include “How can I be a better parent?” “How can I be a better spouse?” and “How can I be a better child?” Just make sure to listen and say … 2. “Thank-you.” Use these two powerful words as often as you can as a response to constructive feedback (which should be seen as a gift), positive feedback, as a way to express gratitude for going the extra mile or a job well done, or when someone brings bad news or a problem to your attention. 3. “Nice job.” Variations include “good work” and “way to go.” And avoid the Ozzi version of “nice work” as it does sound a bit “tradie”. (No pun intended !) Giving positive reinforcement becomes even more powerful when it’s specific, timely, and when you can explain why (positive impact), …but let’s not over-complicate it too much for now. 4. “What do you think?” Credit goes to David Stoop for this one. Asking someone for their opinion or ideas is the ultimate demonstration of respect. And when you get those ideas, don’t forget to go back to #2. In fact, go back to number two as often as you wish. 5. “I think I have an idea about how I could help” Often used as a way to express support during a development discussion, in problem solving, when someone is going through personal difficulties, or when problems or ideas are brought to your attention. This is one of the most powerful phrases in job interviews. 6. “I’ve been thinking about “What’s possible?” Credit goes to Robert H Schuler for teaching me the importance of “possibility thinking.” Instead of coming up with reasons why something won’t work, ask yourself and others “what’s possible”. And if they do come up with examples of how similar ideas have been tried in the past and have not worked, use the phrase “Up until now.” Get it? This could show you are the right man for the job. 7. “I don’t know.” Use this when you truly don’t know the answer to a question or solution to a problem – it demonstrates humility and authenticity. It goes well with “what do you think” as a follow-up. 8. “Why is that important to you?” This question demonstrates that you care, and you’ll learn a lot about the person’s motivation and values. 9. “Can you help me understand.” A much better way to understand someone’s logic, reasoning, feelings, etc… than “really?!” or “seriously?!” or “what the heck are you smoking?!” 10. “I believe in.” The hardest thing to challenge is someone’s believe. Phrasing “I believe in you or I believe in your product or company” makes you genuine. I may have saved the best for last. What a way to express confidence in someone’s ability or potential! Good language is one of the most successful tools for any situation in life. I know what I am talking about. I earn my money through it and English is my second language. I love speaking and I love coaching and the only thing I get a real buzz out of is people securing a new job. That’s why Alun Probert and I run our JobSearchCoaching business and we always remind our fans and clients to hunt wisely Its a copy and paste things oo Forgive my copy and paste method I just think i should share as i found it interesting Thanks buddies |

Boko Haram: U.S Donates $5billion To MNJTF As the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) created to combat terrorist group, Boko Haram intensifies its efforts at tackling the terrorists, the United States has donated the sum of $5 billion to boost their operations. The disclosure was made by Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US assistant secretary, Bureau of African Affairs, at a news briefing via http://www.naij.com/462013-boko-haram-u-s-donates-5billion-to-mnjtf.htmltelephone from the African Union Summit today, NAN reports. She said: “We have been working with Nigeria as well as the African countries innovation to address their concerns about Boko Haram because we don’t see this as just a Nigerian problem, we are having discussions with President Buhari on how we might bolster our support. We have already been working with them and providing information. We are providing some training and support and we’ll love to work with the new administration to see how we might increase the level of support to Nigeria. “At the same time, we’ve just announced at the venue of the AU, a five billion dollar contribution to the Multinational Task Force. We are also providing some equipment and support and we have a number of meetings with the countries who are members of the Multinational Joint Task Force to look at other areas we might support. Africa had faced some really horrendous terrorist attacks over the past two years, the West Gate and Garissa University attacks in Kenya and Boko Haram attacks, particularly the kidnapping of the Chibok girls, in Borno state. “While I would not say Africa is under siege, Africa has some major security challenges that require a very strong and very concerted strategic effort by African countries and partners to address the security concerns of Africa. “The United States is providing a strong support to AU on security, as it has a strong partnership with Africa on security. We are working closely with the Lake Chad Basin countries: Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon to address the issue of Boko Haram,” she said. She revealed that the U.S has trained 250,000 African peacekeepers, and expressed its highest commitment to security on the African continent. Thomas-Greenfield also expressed support for the warrant of arrest issued by the International Criminal Court against Sudan’s President Omar Al-Bashir. “The United States frowns at plans by some African leaders to subvert the constitution to extend their terms in office. US only supports two-term limit in office,” she concluded. http://www.naij.com/462013-boko-haram-u-s-donates-5billion-to-mnjtf.html |
Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari delivered a powerful speech on June 14, Sunday, during the African Union Peace and Security Council meeting held in the course of the AU summit in South Africa. According to The Punch, Buhari urged his African colleagues to place interests of their countries above personal ambitions. “The people of these countries are suffering while their political leaders are bickering among themselves. “I believe that is incumbent upon us as leaders to always place the interest of our countries above narrow and personal interests. “It is therefore my expectation that at the end of this summit, the PSC will come out with a united message to call on all parties to act in the interest of their people and the entire continent. He added that African leaders should do everything possible to “give hope to the hopeless”. With just five years remaining, the prospect of realising this objective looks doubtful.” u |
Exactly 17 years ago today, General Sanni Abacha died, but not without leaving Nigerians some memories to think about. 7 Things History Wont Forget About Abacha Born on September 20, 1943, Nigeria’s military head of state from November 17, 1993, to June 8, 1998, died at the age of 54. Here are a few things history will nott forget about the military head of state whose regime was a threat to anyone opposing his government. 1. Abacha is said to be the most successful coup plotter of all time. He was involved in every successful coup in Nigeria’s history. He single-handedly planned and executed the coup that brought General Muhammadu Buhari to power in 1985 and the one that removed him in 1985. 2. The deceased former military head of state was described as an ‘epitome of military discipline’ in some quarters. This is as a result of the fact that even with his ‘power-drunk’ administration, he did not accept a single political appointment throughout his military career. 3. Abacha is the first Nigerian soldier to get to the rank of a full General without skipping a single rank. 4. Although Abacha’s administration was very controversial with lots of human rights abuses, his administration was the first to record unprecedented economic achievements. There was an increase in the country’s foreign exchange reserves and a reduction in Nigeria’s external debt. Even the military ruler’s close associates called him a ‘good manager’. 5. Abacha is known as a man of “few words and deadly actions”. He did not say too much but acted instead. He shut down the media in the country, civil rights groups and pro-democracy campaigns during his brutal regime. 6. Abacha had quite lot of scandals. He hanged the Ogoni activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, jailed Moshood Abiola and Olusegun Obasanjo, and Wole Soyinka was charged with treason in absentia. 7. Abacha and his family looted a total of £5 billion from the country’s coffers. No wonder he was tagged the fourth most corrupt leader in history in 2004. |
