100m Nigerian Destitute Facts: A Jet And Bulletproof Bloated Government In Total Disconnect

By Dr. Peregrino Brimah

The World Bank country director for Nigeria, Marie-Francoise Marie-Nelly, earlier this month said that 63% or 100 million Nigerians were destitute, living below the poverty line. In her words, “1.2 billion people live in destitution (around the world) out of which 100 million are Nigerians. Inequality is rising in many developing nations.”

Nigeria’s president just “debunked” this via his Chief Economic adviser, Dr Nwanze Okidigbe. Please let’s review.

Firstly, it is important to appreciate that the World Bank did not reveal any new figures. This has been the recognized poverty level in Nigeria since 2010 at least.

National Bureau of statistics (NBS), BBC, 13 February 2012: Poverty has risen in Nigeria, with almost 100 million people living on less than a $1 (£0.63) a day, despite economic growth, statistics have shown. 60.9% of Nigerians in 2010 were living in "absolute poverty" - this figure had risen from 54.7% in 2004.

February NBS report for 2011, Vanguard: 112 million Nigerians are poor going by the economic situation in the country in 2011. While 100 million are in absolute poverty, 12.6 million are moderately poor. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/02/how-government-impoverished-nigerians-poverty-on-rampage/

As can be seen, Marie-Nelly’s statement on our destitution level is not revealing anything new; this year, National Bureau of Statistics again stated that about 112million Nigerians lived below the poverty line. And “that the population of Nigerians in poverty has increased considerably (In 2011). The figure represents about 67 per cent of the entire population.”

To confirm this, we implore the President and his Chief Economic adviser to go ask Dr. Yemi Kale, Nigeria’s Statistician general who heads the National Statistics Bureau which collects these data from over 20 million Nigerian households, over the years. It is beneficial to highlight at this point, that these figures are not evenly distributed, the landlocked north has higher rates, Sokoto with a highest of 86% destitute, while Southern States have some of the better rates which reduce the national average, with states like Anambra—the lowest—with 22% destitute.

What our government representative ignorantly jumbled up, and accused the World Bank of contradiction in, was the National poverty rate. This “rate” is very different from the well established nation’s figures for people living below the global poverty line (of $1.25/day).

Quoting World Bank, “National poverty rate is the percentage of the population living below the national poverty line.” The poverty threshold, or national poverty line, is the minimum level of income deemed adequate in a given country. It is an insular figure which is set and varies by countries.

It was this comparative figure within Nigeria that did drop 2 points between 2004 and 2010. Once we understand that for this figure to drop, it can simply mean that Nigeria reduced the “deemed adequate” value or that overall Nigeria developed more poverty within the period, but what happened was a “curve” shift arising from more of the middle class moving to frank poverty. Such a shift will drop the national poverty rate while increasing the global poverty rank. The documented widening gap between the rich and poor substantiates such explanation. In any case, the national rate has nothing to do with the global poverty line.

It is frankly distressing to think that our Chief Economic Adviser to the President, Dr Nwanze Okidigbe and by representation, our President does not even know where we stand in the world poverty map, and discombobulated our national rates with this well recognized and tracked 60-70% poverty prevalence. So what figures have this government been using to address poverty in Nigeria? The 46%? If this is what our Chief Economic Adviser understands and utilizes, then it is clear why we are in such economic shambles! It appears this government exists in a self-blown up bubble.

Sadder yet, was the presentation Nigeria used to “counter” the figures referenced by the World Bank. Referring to loaves of bread and GSM phones serves only one purpose. Clearly, Nigerian leadership was not talking to the World Bank. They know that to talk to the World Bank, you quote standard statistical data. This presentation was a political statement to the Nigerian masses to convince or confuse us by elementary methods that the World Bank is “working for the opposition parties.”

On GSM lines, Dr Nwanze Okidigbe seemed to suggest that 112 million lines translated to 112 million people who can afford that comparatively expensive (when the Nigerian GSM extortive, oligopolistic service is compared to the world) technology. The reality we all know is that our inflated price mobile network service is so poor that most of us have 2 or 3 lines. This brings down the relevance of this 112m figure to less than 50m that own the total lines.

Secondly, owning a line costs a mere N200 and servicing it per month costs N100, N1200/year which is basically all many, especially those in the rural areas where poverty is most prevalent (with 80% living below the poverty line) do so as to manage limited use in receiving calls alone and sending occasional texts. N1200/year equals less than $7/year.

The forgotten rural population of Nigeria who suffer at the hands of government instituted taxes, subsidy-removal, planned road use taxes and other siphons are the worst hit, cheated and robbed from, by Nigeria’s successive rapacious administrations. This disenfranchised population which accounts for roughly half of the nation’s total (81 million), do not have a single benefit from our governments and are the most pitiful victims of the government and even of us proletariat and petty bourgeoisie, who do not fight to protect their right to welfare and prosperity.

And on the presidencies’ reference to loaves of bread; that’s just a big laugh. In the US, 50 million are destitute. Does this mean 50 million do not eat bread? Our deluded stupendously wealthy government is in such disconnect from the masses, it’s mortally gelastic.

Did he mention SURE-P? Funds that are milked from the poor to feed the cabal and that are largely missing, embezzled or poorly accounted for?

These days, Nigeria seems to always be highlighted in the news and for the same set of painful reasons. Last January, David Cameron mentioned Nigeria as the elucidative example, during his World economic forum speech, to highlight the problems of transparency and corruption in the world.

In the speech, Cameron said, “Last year Nigeria oil exports were worth almost a hundred billion dollars. That is more than the total net aid to the whole of sub Saharan Africa. So put simply: unleashing the natural resources in these countries dwarfs anything aid can achieve, and transparency is absolutely critical to that end. So we’re going to push for more transparency on who owns companies; on who’s buying up land and for what purpose; on how governments spend their money; on how gas, oil and mining companies operate; and on who is hiding stolen assets and how we recover and return them.”

The British Prime Minister followed up by referring to the topic today. He said, “Thirty years ago more than half of our planet lived on the equivalent of one dollar twenty five a day or less; today it’s not one half, it is one fifth.”

It is disheartening to realize that when the world is improving the living conditions of its people. When a predominance of more than half living below $1.25 has been cut around the world to one fifth, Nigeria is not one of the nations that celebrate human progress. We own almost 10% of the world’s poor. 70% of this nation lives below the poverty line, whereas the nation brags of having some of the world’s wealthiest men. Billionaires in dollars who made wealth off of the nations massive natural blessings by impoverishing the masses of the nation via government managed oligopolies and partnership with our governments, civilian and democratic to loot the wealth and resource of the people.

This is the law of compensation. It is unfortunate, but not surprising that the President and his team are oblivious to this reality. You cannot plunder the wealth and future of a people, and all drive armored cars and command private jets, and the people remain affluent. When you take, someone must give. When the government continues all types of elaborate schemes and scams, siphoning the oil wealth of the nation, enforcing exploitative monopolies for its private partner cabal friends on life’s essentials, imposing higher tariffs, levies and sanctions on the masses to squeeze out every last kobo into the paws of the cabal, the result is poverty.

At about 68% destitute level, Nigeria, a world top oil producer, and the nation with the highest paid Senators in the entire world, today has the fourth highest number of poor on the continent. Interactive map here: http://www.indexmundi.com/facts/indicators/SI.POV.DDAY

Our government and their coterie of elite vampires loot not just from our land, but from our pockets. They have made the nation too poor, too poor to react and they are counting on us soon becoming too poor to even think.

Boko Haram: Fake Audio, No Video Confirms Shekau Is Dead

Sept. 26, 2013

NewsRescue- Yesterday NewsRescue dared any media to substantiate their fake and dangerous claims that Abubakar Shekau, the dead leader of Boko Haram was still alive.

Boko Haram: Shekau Is Dead! Show Us “I Am Alive” Authentic Video — NewsRescue: http://newsrescue.com/boko-haram-shekau-is-dead-show-us-i-am-alive-authentic-video-newsrescue/#ixzz2g3qmx4A5

Highly suspiciously, shortly after Apo believed extrajudicial killings in Abuja, and the week US congress discusses Boko Haram, DailyTrust, followed by BBC Hausa, and then other news blogs like SaharaReporters and AllAfrica claimed there was a new video in which Shekau said he was alive and claimed responsibility for recent killings in Munguno and Benisheik.

No video was posted to support this preposterous claim that even BBC world recirculated.

DailyTrust described the video they presented–without showing even a single still image–as showing Shekau in army fatigue with similar dressed commandos around him in the forest.

It is 24 hours later and no such evidence has been presented by any media.

SaharaReporters published a very laughable audio single image youtube with an old image of Shekau that was meant to represent the newest video.

This audio was a highly pathetic attempt at representing Shekau’s ghost. Firstly there is no video, as was earlier claimed.

Secondly, the audio voice was not that of Shekau, our experienced voice analysts and not so experienced voice analysts all agreed the voice had much higher pitches and greater youth and trepidation than Shekau typically has. There is a 100% confirmation that the audio is a fraud, possibly by members who are afraid of losing position to the new crazy wannabe leaders.

This fake video claim could also be a more sinister agenda by international or national government agencies to foster trouble in Nigeria and Africa. BBC and even Reuters rebroadcasting such an obviously fake terror propaganda claim supports the second view, that elements are unhappy with Nigeria's military and civilian JTF success against Boko Haram bandits.

A report we published yesterday of the impossible, dozens of US Armored trucks and other high tech military equipment being 'stolen' from NATO and US run Libya, sends chills down Nigerians spines, of what sinister plans people have for terrorizing and destabilizing Africa.

NewsRescue analysts yesterday presented that Shekau was dead or totally disposed. The recent cheap random killings were affirmation of his death and a tussle among the remaining defeated terrorists, each trying to show he is more bloody so as to take Shekau's spot. This is why recent Mosque and road killings have been of cheap standards, but attempts at worthless massacring. This is just to make other members fear the individual striving to become the feared leader who gets the most bounty from these bandits.

NewsRescue still challenges any media to substantiate their junk and unprofessional journalistic claims that Shekau is alive, with a veritable video.

Propaganda? Multiple Media Claim Dead Shekau Is Alive But Provide No Such Video Evidence

Sept. 25, 2013

NewsRescue- In disregard of sensible journalism and safety for the citizenry, several media houses including DailyTrust, BBC, SaharaReporters, AllAfrica to mention a few, have published today without providing any iota of evidence–video or single still image–that the dead Boko Haram terrorist leader, Abubakar Shekau came out in a new video promising fire and brimstone and claiming responsibility for recent deadly senseless massacres in Benisheik, Borno.

None of the media houses provided even a single still image of this new video for their viewers and readers. Like a wild fire, this allegation of a new video is spreading without any verification of the video and its authenticity if such video even exists.

It can be recalled that Abubakar Shekau’s latest video in July displayed a fake looking Shekau, who looked retarded and like a puppet. Several videos purported to have been the late Osama have been disputed by experts as having been staged and fake videos.

NewsRescue- Nigeria Chief Terrorist, Abubakar Shekau Appears Mentally Challenged In New Video

It is no secret that local and global players including the Qatari regime and its Al Jazeera media, aim to manipulate the terror situation in Nigeria as they have been caught doing, including directly financing terror groups like al Qaeda and AQIM (LIFG).

Emo-journalism: Qatar and Boko Haram—Analyzing the Al Jazeera 3000 Civilian Death Claim

Not a single of the media sites stated in whose possession the so-called video was.

Power Tussle Among Boko Bandits

NewsRescue analysts believe that the deadly Benisheik massacres are the results of power tussles in the Boko Haram terrorist group that has been significantly decimated by the Nigerian armed forces and civilian JTF. Various crazy members are trying to show their superiority so as to take control of what is left of Boko Haram, by cheaply demonstrating how deadly and deadlier they are with these massacres. The group is in its desperate and dying days, our analysts conclude.

NewsRescue hopes that the so-called video will eventually be revealed to the public. Till then, we say with our sensible readers, Rest in Hell, Shekau.

The Infancy Gospel of James, Chapter 8 verse 2 to Chapter 9 verse 11

“When she [Mary] turned twelve, a group of priests took counsel together, saying, ‘Look, Mary has been in the temple of the Lord twelve years. What should we do about her now, so that she does not defile the sanctuary of the Lord our God?’ And they said to the high priest, ‘You have stood at the altar of the Lord. Go in and pray about her. And if the Lord God reveals anything to you, we will do it.’ And the priest went in taking the vestment with twelve bells into the holy of holies and prayed about her. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord stood before him, saying, ‘Zachariah, Zachariah, depart from here and gather the widowers of the people and let each one carry a staff. And the one whom the Lord God points out with a sign, she will be his wife.’ So the heralds went out to the whole surrounding area of Judea and the trumpet of the Lord rang out and all the men rushed in.

Throwing down his axe, Joseph went out to meet them. And after they had gathered together with their rods, they went to the high priest. After receiving everyone’s rod, the high priest went into the temple and prayed. When he was finished with the prayer, he took the rods and went out and gave them to each man, but there was no sign among them. Finally, Joseph took his rod. Suddenly, a dove came out of the rod and stood on Joseph’s head. And the high priest said, ‘Joseph! Joseph! You have been chosen by lot to take the virgin into your own keeping.’ And Joseph replied, saying, ‘I have sons and am old, while she is young. I will not be ridiculed among the children of Israel.’ And the high priest said, ‘Joseph, fear the Lord your God and remember what God did to Dathan and Abiron and Kore, how the earth split open and swallowed them because of their rebellion. Now fear God, Joseph, so that these things do not happen in your house.’ Fearing God, Joseph took her into his own possession.”

The History of Joseph the Carpenter is a compilation of traditions concerning Mary, mother of Jesus and the "holy family," probably composed in Byzantine Egypt in Greek in the late 6th or early 7th century, but surviving only in Arabic language translation.[1] The text gives support to the doctrine of perpetual virginity of Mary.

The text is framed as an explanation by Jesus on the Mount of Olives concerning the life of Joseph, his stepfather. Agreeing with Mary's continued virginity, the text proclaims that Joseph had four sons (Judas, Justus, James, and Simon) and two daughters (Assia and Lydia) by a previous marriage. At age 90, after the death of his first wife, Joseph is given charge of the twelve year old virgin Mary. She lives in his household raising his youngest son James 'the less' along with Judas, until the time she is to be married at age 14½.

In Christianity, though the exact age is not known, based on Jewish culture the age at which Mary had Jesus is put somewhere between 12-16 years.

The Protevangelion of James, a rare Biblical book from the ‘Lost gospels:’

CHAPTER 8: 2 And when she was twelve years old, there was a council of the priests, saying: Behold Mary is become twelve years old in the temple of the Lord. What then shall we do with her ? lest she pollute the sanctuary of the Lord. And they said unto the high priest: Thou standest over the altar of the Lord. Enter in and pray concerning her: And whatsoever the Lord shall reveal to thee, that let us do.

CHAPTER 8: 1 And Joseph cast down his adze and ran to meet them, and when they were gathered together they went to the high priest and took their rods with them. And he took the rods of them all and went into the temple and prayed. And when he had finished the prayer he took the rods and went forth and gave them back to them: and there was no sign upon them. But Joseph received the last rod: and 1o, a dove came forth of the rod and flew upon the bead of Joseph. And the priest said unto Joseph: Unto thee hath it fallen to take the virgin of the Lord and keep her for thyself. 2 And Joseph refused, saying: I have sons, and I am an old man, but she is a girl: lest I became a laughing-stock to the children of Israel.
The Catholic encyclopedia supports this age estimate ( http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/15464b.htm), Bible gateway, a popular Christian Biblical information source online also suggests this age range for the old Joseph and young Mary: http://www.biblegateway.com/resources/commentaries/IVP-NT/Matt/When-Virgin-Gave-Birth

A Final Word To Femi Fani-Kayode And Others On Child Marriage

Posted: July 28, 2013 - 13:43
By Peregrino Brimah

If you tell a lie one hundred times, it does not become a truth, all it becomes is a lie told a hundred times. As Mahatma Gandhi said: An error does not become truth by reason of multiplied propagation, nor does truth become error because nobody sees it.

Did you just wake up? Did you never before know of these provisions in the constitution and occurrences across Nigeria since forever?

No, not what you said Femi, nor what much of the junk media propagated, the senate did not pass any child marriage bill on July 16th.

Again, not the calumniation you proliferate, the senate did not approve child marriage by failing to delete Section 29 (4)(b), they only retained as ingrained in the constitution, a married young woman's right to renounce her citizenship for purposes which include but are not limited to asylum seeking and foreign spouse related travel.

Again, no, Femi Fani-Kayode, there is no Muslim law that permits sex with children.

Emphasis: Islam is vehemently against sex with children and Islam does not permit pedophilia.

Education and Information: Sex with anyone who is post-pubertal is not pedophilia. Pedophilia is defined as: A person who has a sustained sexual orientation toward pre-pubertal children.

Fact on culture: 78% of marriages in north Nigeria are to women below the age of 18. (Most wise people know that protests and threats never change culture or religion.)
Fact on culture: 70% of marriages in Mali are to women below the age of 18. (And Mali does not have Nigeria's peculiar VVF explosive crises)

Fact: The age of marriage in south Nigeria is generally set at 16.

Fact: The age of marriage for girls in the Vatican is set at 14 as per the code of canon law.

Facts: In the US, the age of marriage in New York is 14, New Hampshire is 13, North Carolina is 14, Rhode Island has no minimum age, Tennessee has no minimum age, Washington state has no minimum and Pennsylvania has no minimum age.

Facts: Minimum age of marriage in Spain is 14 (2013 now 16), Greece 16, Albania, 16, Austria 16, Denmark 15, Georgia 15, Lithuania 15, Poland, 16, Romania 16, England and Wales 16, Sweden 15, Canada 15, Slovenia 15, Ireland and Iceland - none, Serbia 16, Slovenia 15.

Fact: USA refused to sign the UN declaration of the rights of a child.

Fact: Old age also is a great risk of fistula; and the total prevalence of fistulae is 188 per 100,000 women aged 15 to 49 years in South Saharan Africa. Pierre Marie Tebeu et al, Int Urogynecol J. 2012

Fact: Seven primary risk factors for obstetrical fistula commonly reported include the place of birth and presence of a skilled birth attendant, the duration of labor and the use of a partograph, the lack of prenatal care, early marriage and young age at delivery, older age, lack of family planning, and a number of other poorly defined additional factors... Pierre Marie Tebeu et al, Int Urogynecol J. 2012

Fact: US has 500,000 teen pregnancies per year and 4000 girls get pregnant at age 12 and no age-related fistulae.

Nota bene: Human beings are not tinned tomato with 'best before' or 'expiration date,' and as hence, 18 can in no logical or physiological way, be the magical date that a child becomes an adult.

Nota bene: 18 is not a date enforced under the child rights UN act. It is only a recommended date; to maintain signatory to the act, a state can adopt an age of choice as its age of majority, above or below 18.

Nota bene: Biologically, medically and culturally, adulthood is defined as the attainment of sexual and social maturity, and is variable inter and intra-specie. A 13 year post pubertal man may not yet be intellectually mature just as a 52 year old man may not be deemed mature if he still acts intellectually and socially pediatric.

Popular consensus of the blesseds: Mary was 12 when she was betrothed to 90 year old Joseph, and God gave her Jesus when she was ~12-16.

Medical facts:

Teen pregnancy does not cause vesico or recto-vaginal fistula, lack of nearby quality obstetric care does.

Teen pregnancy reduces the risk/rate of breast cancer by 50%. Repeat, 50%!

Between teens and thirties, fertility rate drops by as much as 40%!

The body copes better and recovers more perfectly after teen birth, compared to old birth.

Social facts:

There are 2 teen pregnancies in south Nigeria for every 8 in the north.

#WomanNotCommodity

Aristo's are men who line up with their cars at Moremi and other campus halls to predate on and rump peoples teen and older daughters.

#WomanNotCommodity

All the thousands of teens and twenty year old girls that patrol the streets all over Nigeria, risking and selling their bodies to men, are people's daughters; repeat, they are people's daughters, and are the greatest threat to womanhood in Nigeria at present.

#WomanNotCommodity

81% of Nigerian women suffer from domestic violence, including wife murdering which is very prevalent and almost exclusive to southern parts of Nigeria.

The right to life: Abortion crises in Nigeria is a great threat to our women as well as murder of babies. This is a clear cause for address.

In conclusion.

There is no problem with Nigeria having this conversation in a mature, respectable productive format, on our women, their rights including age, opportunity, marriage and domestic violence related. But there is absolutely no reason for these childish rants and hopeless cheap-publicity seeking campaigns.

Nigeria is just--thank God--finally putting a lid on Boko Haram ethno-tensive risky violence. We are dealing with the second worst high sea piracy in the world, with the worst government in the world. Nigeria is the worst place to be born. If anything, married males should also be included in the provision and granted the rights of renunciation. And perhaps also, our purer teens should be allowed to vote, maybe this will save us from the stupid choices our adults vote into power. No law was broken in the events of the fateful senate meeting of July 16, neither law of God, nor law of man was violated. Do you wish a law to be violated? Do you wish senators to vote against the desires of their constituents who elected them to office? Why do Nigerians love and promote lawlessness? Due process was followed that fateful day. Why do we not first go after the millions of actual legal violations in the government and community that are clear and present government terror, than continue peddling this preposterous, gelastic, harebrained misinformation and misconstruction of events of the proceedings, with only aim, to attack 80% of northern marriages and in effect incite ethnic distrust? What a sorry nation with the most misplaced revolutions in history. They say lawyers are liars. I hardly believe. And so also, I refuse to believe the caution that actresses should always be suspected of being in performance.

I am not sure the world started in Nigeria, so why must the apocalypse begin from Nigeria? I rest my case on this ludicrous distraction and hereby return to the issues of 5>27 and 16>19, child and teenage numbers, surpassing adult numbers. And perhaps also, our purer teens should be allowed to vote, maybe this will save us from the stupid choices our adults vote into power.

Maryam Uwais: 18 Is A UN Regulation And Not A Revelation

Salutations to you Mrs. Uwais. Your article was brilliant and I must say, I enjoyed reading every line of it. This is the level of intellectual discourse that I pray someday in the future, we will find among our elected officials, media and in our religious and social gatherings. Every point you raised is important and a useful contribution toward the discussion on early marriages. I must say, my anxiety when I began reading was soon laid to rest when I saw that were not treading the line of the many confused authors, activists and media houses that did not understand the constitutional decision that was made, and the fact that no bill was passed, nor law on child marriage created; what happened being Senator Ahmad Sani Yarima and the other 35 senators simply objecting to the deletion of section 29, and in effect maintaining a married, albeit--young woman's right of choice, as had been stipulated in the constitution.

We both know that Senator Yerima did not introduce Section 29 to Nigeria's constitution. We also both understand that the portion of section 29 in review describes a married(young) woman's right to decide to revoke her citizenship, and not her being mature because she married. In acknowledgment of these, the summary of my comments on your article are these two questions-

1. I ask, did Senator Yerima violate any Nigerian law by requesting a re-vote on maintaining this aspect of Nigeria's constitution?

2. Did Senator Yerima violate any Islamic law?

If he did not violate any Nigerian law, or Islamic law, then why have we put his case in front of the court of public sentiment, degradation and ridicule? Is this because he is a cheap target? I'm not sure if his wife has complained of a health problem or other inconvenience to us? Are the protests against Senator Yarima justified in your view, more so as 99% of the protesters believe a "child marriage bill" was introduced by Senator Yarima and passed by the senate, being completely ignorant of the facts of the senate proceeding. This misinformation error, so grave, it appears to have been intentionally constructed by media elements. Should it not be a better task for us to include some time to educate the strife-eager public on the folly of activism against what did not occur, rather than using this publication medium to discus serious religious matters? Or perhaps to redirect their energy to more pressing crimes of corruption, mal-governance, cabalism, youth unemployment, or maybe social ills like fornication, adultery, prostitution and female genital mutilation or husbands killing wives? Pressing and actual and not made-up events?

Do not get this wrong, we are all happy to discuss matters of religion and culture in public fora, but these should be done based on true facts, in the right manner, and not tagging on errors, and misguided steps, with irresponsible harassment and noise. It may be necessary that the northern parts of Nigeria and Nigeria's Muslims sit down and review the age they wish to get married in consideration of the current state of poverty and available health services, but again I ask you, have they violated any Nigerian law? If they have not violated any law of Nigeria (being allowed under the Nigerian constitution to marry young brides according to their Sharia law) then why have we opened up this matter and tagged along with erroneous protests while gaining cheap publicity? Should we not initiate a scholars forum among Muslims to deliberate on investigating and deciding on how to address the issues of early marriage if they do exist and for the reasons that they do? Should we not focus our energy in writing on ensuring women married or to be married, have full access to marriage counsel, legal representation in events of domestic violence, forced marriages or desires to divorce? Or perhaps in promoting the prophet of Islam's other culture of marrying widows?

Not that it compares in any way, but celebrity director Polanski who drugged and raped a 13 year old, and then fled justice to France, did we all not witness how the French government, and Mitterrand himself absolved him of his heinous crime? And the likes of media like CNN and French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner wished him freedom, with Hollywood celebrities like Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, John Landis, Harvey Weinstein and even females like Monica Bellucci, Asia Argento, Debra Winger and Whoopi Goldberg defending him?

And as much as we have over thrashed the poverty related, social and health complications of northern Muslim practices, have we ever considered the comparative advantages of the early marriage practiced as against the fornication that happens in parts of Nigeria where marriage is delayed? When last did we look at the HIV and STD distribution map of Nigeria? Abortion-murder? Or the domestic violence map of Nigeria? The fertility rate distribution? The frigidity rate? Even cancer rate? Do we think a discussion of such a prevalent cultural event that affects millions is as simple as some high blood pressure and misconstrued activism? While some of us did our best and created movements and wrote about Boko haram, about piracy, where were the activists? Where were the rallies against terror, against kidnapping, against oil theft? Or as Senator Yarima said, why do we not hunt the legislators who fill bus loads of secondary school pupils for orgies?

I am one person who believes strongly in obeying the law, and if a person does obey the law, then I am vehemently against the oppression and intimidation of such person, be it by protest or by writing, usually by people who are more immoral and criminal then the one they accuse. Nigeria is not the only country that has young marriages, in neighboring Mali, 70% of marriages are below 18 years. Yet Mali does not have the epidemic of VVF's Nigeria--the highest in the world-- has. Does this not suggest that this health crises has more to do with the Nigerian factor?

Did we first email Senator Yarima as I believe Islam commands, and suggest a Muslim meeting on this topic? Will intimidation address this problem? I have earlier written an extensive article on 'child marriage,' "My Thoughts on 'Child' Marriage". Reading this may open you up to other considerations and how this subject is not just that simple. I am sure you know that early marriages do not cause VVF's? I am sure you also know that the young brides in the north are not the reason for the poverty in the land-locked north? I'll probably blame the child abandonment, almajiri system more, with 10 million abandoned children. So why are we playing a tune of provocateurs?

Nigeria's Muslims can rightly come together and as under the tenets of Islam, make a decision in regards to this issue of young marriages. Don't you believe that? Many countries have done so as you rightly pointed out. But this is a choice and not what a million placards or articles can bring about, and I am sure you appreciate this, because as I have said earlier, Nigeria's Muslims have neither violated any law of God or man in this issue. Should we not go through the right channel, respecting our countrymen and their wives?

You as many others repeat, 18, 18, 18--when a child becomes an adult, at 18. I am sure you know that it was the United Nations Child Summit Declaration of 1990, and the Child Rights Act 2003 that decided that 18 and not a day before or a day after, makes you an adult. Doesn't this make you laugh? So a 17 year old girl, 8 months from her 18th birthday, in your view should not be allowed the right to make decisions till the hour of the day of her solar calendar 18th birthday? Is this logical, rational or religious thinking? Do you or Nigeria also accept the UN stipulations for us on sodomy? You see, selecting 18 was a decision, possibly after a vote, possibly well intended, but it was not a revelation from God.

In conclusion, we are all free to our opinions and we can all make this a gainful discussion, but it is important that we do not associate this conversation with Senator Ahmad Sani Yarima and the senate proceedings, because it has absolutely nothing to do with him, or the proceedings of that day, which were not about child marriage. Section 29 on citizenship revocation rights, was written in our constituion before Yerima became a senator.

Today there are over 6 million young brides by my estimation in the north, neither me nor you is going to decide here whether these 6 million women and mothers should be allowed the right of choice or not. Not here, not now and not related to this crises with all the errors, falsehoods and fabrications. Nigeria already decided to give them the right of choice, let us respect our constitution and respect people's right of choice without deprivation or fear of intimidation. There are times times and needs to revolt and there are times to discuss. Sigh at Nigeria and its wrong revolutions.

Mrs. Maryam Uwais, your brilliance and blessings are urgently needed on the right side of activism and writing for social justice. We can't wait to read from you again.

Here is something that might interest you guys on how the west treats, one of their own for drug raping a 13 year old girl:

http://edition.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/Movies/09/29/polanski.filmmakers.protest/

Filmmakers demand Polanski's release

ZURICH, Switzerland (CNN) -- Woody Allen, Pedro Almodovar and Martin Scorsese have "demanded the immediate release" of fellow filmmaker Roman Polanski, who was arrested in Switzerland on a U.S. arrest warrant related to a 1977 child sex charge.

They were among 138 people in the film industry who signed a petition against the arrest.

Polanski was on the way to the Zurich Film Festival when Swiss police detained him in response to the American warrant.

The filmmaker pleaded guilty in 1977 to having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor but fled before he could be sentenced. He settled in France, where he holds citizenship. Investigators in the United States say Polanski, then 43, drugged and raped a 13-year-old girl.

The filmmakers objected to his being arrested en route to the film festival, which held a tribute to him this year.

"It seems inadmissible to them that an international cultural event, paying homage to one of the greatest contemporary filmmakers, is used by the police to apprehend him," said the petition, backed by France's Societe des Auteurs et Compositeurs Dramatiques (Society of Dramatic Authors and Composers).

"The arrest of Roman Polanski in a neutral country, where he assumed he could travel without hindrance ... opens the way for actions of which no one can know the effects," said the signatories, who also included actresses Monica Bellucci and Tilda Swinton and directors David Lynch, Jonathan Demme, John Landis, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Wim Wenders.

==========================

You will not believe the list of westerners that demanded his release, including CNN, France government, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner wished him freedom, with hundreds of Hollywood celebrities like Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, John Landis, Harvey Weinstein and even females like Monica Bellucci, Asia Argento, Debra Winger and Whoopi Goldberg defending him?

zuchyblink: psychology is a flexible field which has rapour with different field including medicine, and the explanation he gave on VVF was shallow.and he spoke from the psychological point of view, ignoring sentiments.i think the issue of early marriage is the matter of leave and let leave, but considering education,if i'm to say after secondary school but not considered as A MUST

Dr. Peregrino Brimah is NOT the person you quoted. VVF's are NOT caused by young age, but by poor obstetric and medical care. And tat is not debatable.

This is VVF

Risk Factors

Although the exact incidence of vesico-vaginal fistula in the United States is unknown, estimates range between 0.01 to 0.04% of gynecologic procedures. In developing countries vesico-vaginal fistulas are more common and are related to obstructed labor due to unattended deliveries, small pelvic dimensions, malpresentation, poor uterine contractions and introital stenosis. The primary cause of vesico-vaginal fistula in the United States is related to gynecologic surgery. In a series of 303 women with genitourinary fistula by Lee et al., fistulas were related to gynecologic surgery in 82%, obstetric events in 8%, radiation therapy in 6%, and trauma or fulguration in 4%. (1) Rare causes of VVF include lymphogranuloma venereum, tuberculosis, syphilis, bladder stones, retained foreign body in the vagina, and trauma. Spontaneous vesico-uterine fistula has also been reported as a rare complication following uncomplicated vaginal birth after Caesarean section. (2) Most commonly, vesico-vaginal fistulas in developing countries are associated with benign gynecologic surgery, especially hysterectomy, and are caused by extensive dissection between the bladder and the uterus, unrecognized bladder laceration, inappropriate stitch placement, and/or devascularization injury to the tissue planes. Concurrent ureteric involvement has been reported to be as high 10-15% of vesico-vaginal fistula cases. Patient risk factors which may predispose to development of vesico-vaginal fistula include prior pelvic surgery, history of PID, pelvic malignancy, endometriosis, infection, diabetes, and anatomic distortion. The presence of these risk factors should be considered pre-operatively and patients counseled accordingly. http://www.womenshealthsection.com/content/urogvvf/urogvvf002.php3
