Little known Malagasy Football Federation (MFF) president Ahmad Ahmad has been elected the new Confederation of African Football (CAF) president.

Ahmad, 57, floored the incumbent Issa Hayatou, 71, by getting 34 votes out of a possible 54.

Hayatou, who has lead the continental body since 10th March, 1988 was chasing for a record 8th straight term in office.

The elections took place during today’s 39th Ordinary General Assembly in Addis Ababa.

The APC women group, the National Coalition for Peace and Development (NCPD), has cautioned Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti state to stop further attacks on President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to the group, such unguarded and frivolous utterances on the president were unbecoming of a sitting governor, Vanguard reports.

This was disclosed by the mobilizer of the group, Hajiya Hauwa Bagu Dbell Hajiya Dbell, in an interview with newsmen in Abuja.

Hauwa slammed Fayose for his habitual and unbridle molesting of President Buhari and his family members for no just cause.

This comes even as she urged all persons of goodwill to disregard the impulsive comments of the governor who she says has a “habit of throwing caution to the winds whenever he makes it his calling to cast aspersions against the President.”

She noted that while it may not be necessary to join words with Fayose if he attacks President Buhari, peddling rumours against his family relations such as Alhaji Mammam Daura must be condemned.

Hauwa said: “Fayose, who obviously has become a victim of an ingrained phobia of Mr President’s uncompromising integrity, must have lost it when, contrary to his wishes the man returned to his responsibilities hale and hearty.

APC Women Group warn Fayose over attacks on Buhari

The governor of Kaduna State, Nasir Elrufai, sent a memo to the president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.

The 30-page memo was a follow up to an earlier memo by the governor to the president.

Elrufai said: “the All Progressives Congress (APC) has made the situation in Nigeria worse than it met it by failing to be proactive in taking key decisions in a timely manner,”

“Overall, the feeling even among our supporters today is that the APC government is not doing well,” he declared, before proceeding to an analysis of the key areas: Politics, National Economy and Governance, and then making suggestions for Mr. Buhari’s consideration and action.”

The Senate has resolved to issue a warrant compelling the Comptroller- General of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Hameed Ali, to appear before it at plenary.

The decision of the Senate followed a motion by Senator George Sekibo that the senate should employ the provision of section 89 of the 1999 constitution as amended.

The motion was moved following the failure of the Ali to appear before the senate on Wednesday as invited by the upper legislative chambers.

The motion which was seconded by the Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, was ruled upon by the Senate President Bukola Saraki.

The Senate in accordance with section 89 of the 1999 constitution has amended, resolved to compel the Comptroller General of Custosm to appear before the Senate on Thursday 16 of March during the plenary at 10 am,’’ Saraki ruled.
Section 89 of the constitution gives the National Assembly and its committees the power to investigate and invite any Nigerian over an investigation.

Ali on Tuesday wrote the senate twice, explaining that he would be unable to honour the invitation to appear during the plenary on Wednesday.

Nigeria has led advocacy campaign for the promotion of women’s property rights in Africa, saying it is a panacea to achieving women economic empowerment in the continent.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, hosted Africa’s women parliamentarians at a side event at the ongoing UN Commission on the Status of Women in NewYork.

Orelope-Adefulire regretted that women were still discriminated against in Africa in the area of rights to inherit property.

“Women are special; we should be celebrated everyday and there is no reason why our rights should be eroded.

“The laws that give rights to men, the same laws give rights to women. So we must come together to protect the rights of women in Africa,” she said.

The 81 Division of the Nigeria Army said it had detained six soldiers over the alleged assault of a young woman.

The woman was identified as Ruth Orji in various newspaper reports.

The division said this in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Lt-col. Olaolu Daudu, on Wednesday.

The army issued its statement after the group representing the victim sued the army for #250 million naira damages.

The incident had happened around Odongunyan area of Ikorodu, Lagos, on the 12th of March 2017.

In its statement, the division said the army have “zero tolerance” to brutality and inhumanity and as such it regretted that the incident had happened.
Lt-col Daudu described the incident as “disheartening” and assured that the accused would face the wrath of the law.

The Sub Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Tajudeen Ajiboye, has denied claims that he assaulted the students union president, Lukman Shobowale.

Ajiboye made this denial during a comprehensive interview with Lade’s Signatory and Beauld.

He said he was at the Computer Based Test centre (CBT) to address his students who were unable to take an examination.

The sub dean insisted that he had the interest of the students at heart and could never possibly have assaulted anyone.

He said that the SU president was having an argument with another official at the CBT centre when he got in.

“I saw the two of them arguing and went there to see what was going on, on getting there I saw a student arguing with the lecturer and collected his ID card without even knowing he was the students Union president.”

The acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was rejected twice by the Nigerian senate not because of the indicting report the Department of State Security (DSS) issued on him, a highly placed source had told The Nation.

The Nation reported that seven state governors plotted Magu’s removal due to his strong stance against corruption.

The plot began when Magu initiated a probe against some governors over alleged diversion of ₦19 billion from the London-Paris Club loan refund.

A family source has said that one Taiwo Olarenwaju Ariyo, who committed suicide over the weekend did so because his U.S.-based father stopped caring for him and his brother.

Taiwo had posted “only got few hours to live” on Facebook before proceeding to take Sniper (an insecticide) in the Igando area of Lagos.

PUNCH reports that Taiwo’s father, Clement Ariyo, who works as a pathologist with the Red Cross Society, married two wives: Taiwo’s mother who had three children, and another woman who had two children.

It was gathered that Clement was always sending money to Taiwo’s stepmother while neglecting his own mother and her children.

Babatunde Raji Fashola, an erstwhile governor of Lagos State and minister of works, has replied his successor, Akinwunmi Ambode, over the latter’s accusations that his ministry was frustrating some of his plans in the state.

On Wednesday, in a statement, Ambode had faulted the Fashola-led federal ministry of failing to allow the state government rebuild the Oshodi road that leads to the Lagos Airport and also failing to ensure the proper handover of the Presidential Lodge in Lagos to the state government as directed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

He also complained that Fashola’s ministry had failed to expedite action in refunding the N51billion spent by the state on federal roads.

However, on Thursday, in a statement by his spokesperson, Hakeem Bello, Mr. Fashola said his “response is to ensure that members of the public are not misled by deliberate or inadvertent mis-statements” of the Lagos governor.

The Osun State Government has imposed a two-day curfew in Ile-Ife over the crisis that erupted on Wednesday in which some were people were killed.

The fight between Yoruba and Hausa communities in Sabo area in Ile-Ife also led to loss of properties.

Reports say between tens of people were killed during the clash.

In a statement by Semiu Okanlawon, a media aide to Governor Rauf Aregbesola, the curfew will be between 6PM and 7AM from Wednesday to Friday.

He said the state government was compelled to impose the curfew following the breach of the peace in the town which, according to him, has led to avoidable destruction of lives and properties.

Okanlawon warned that the government will not tolerate breach of public peace.

He said Gov. Aregbesola had called for deployment of heavy security personnel to Ile-Ife to curb the crisis.

Armed men suspected to be assassins last night invaded the house of embattled former National Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh located at Prince and Princess Estate, Abuja. The armed men numbering about, eight fired several shots and forcefully gained entrance into the compound after destroying a section of its spiked security fence.

They tied up security guards and a driver at the premises and attempted to gain access in the main building, but could not due to the security doors at the front and back entrances of the main house. When they could not gain access into the main building, they beat up the security guards and ordered them at gunpoint to call out Chief Metuh using their phones, but the guards insisted that he was not at home but had travelled to the east.

The Ekiti State Government has declared March 8 as work free day to celebrate the 2017 International Women’s Day in the state.

The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Idowu Adelusi, told journalists in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday that Governor Ayo Fayose gave the approval to allow full participation of women in the event.

According to him, the holiday will also afford men wishing to identify with the womenfolk the opportunity to do so without hindrance.

He said that the state government would sponsor the event, to enable women to showcase their potential and have a sense of belonging in the society.

Adelusi further explained that the governor would use the occasion to roll out action plans and largesse for all adult women in the state, irrespective of their political affiliations.

The Chairman of the Publicity Sub-Committee of the event, Oluwayomi Osuntokun, said the event was being organised to celebrate and empower women in the state.

Stephanie Otobo, the 23 year old singer based in Canada, who was arrested for allegedly blackmailing the General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministries (OFM) Worldwide has spoken out concerning their alleged relationship.

Recall that she had accused the clergyman of impregnating her, adding that he breached his promise to marry her. Stephanie, through her lawyer, Festus Keyamo, had threatened to slam a N500m lawsuit against Suleman.

Stephanie was arrested at an ATM spot in the Anthony Village area of Lagos State.

Suleman’s Communications Manager, Phrank Shaibu had said that the money Stephanie went to withdraw was sent by Suleman at the instance of the police, adding that it was a bait to arrest her.
