United States Vice President Kamala Harris speaks on arrival in Ghana, March 26, 2023
US Vice President Kamala Harris arrived in Ghana on Sunday as part of her weeklong tour to Africa aimed at deepening US ties.
The US Secret Service ensured individuals entering the Jubilee Lounge were properly screened ahead of her arrival, which has generated mixed reactions on social media. Harris is expected to deliver a speech in Accra, visit Cape Coast Castle, and meet with leaders of Ghana, Tanzania, and Zambia to discuss issues such as food security, climate change, and investment. As the US Vice President Kamala Harris embarks on her weeklong tour of Africa, a video surfaced on social media showing the US Secret Service taking over security screening at Jubilee Lounge in Kotoka International Airport, Accra, Ghana.
According to reports, the Secret Service ensured that individuals entering the lounge were properly screened ahead of the arrival of the Vice President. While some Ghanaians expressed concern over the Secret Service's involvement in security screening, others praised their efficiency.
Vice President Kamala Harris Markets Kamala Harris’s visit to Africa is intended to engender some economic growth on the continent.
One Twitter user, @cyril_klevs, expressed his scepticism, "They have taken over the airport and are screening our security men who are supposed to do the screening... I wonder if we will do the same if we get to their country."
Another Twitter user, who goes by the handle @SteveFr69314074, was critical of the Ghanaian president, "Akuffo Addo is a sellout president. A total disgrace to Ghana. Our sovereignty has been sold by Akuffo Addo."
The video has sparked a debate on social media, with some users condemning what they see as neocolonialism and others applauding the use of intelligence and technology.
Despite the controversy, Harris arrived to cheers in the Ghanaian capital on Sunday, her first stop on her African tour. The Vice President was welcomed at the airport by schoolchildren waving Ghanaian and American flags.
In her speech, Harris expressed her excitement about the future of Africa and discussed issues such as increasing food security, climate change, and growing investment on the continent. She is also due to visit Cape Coast Castle, where enslaved Africans were once loaded onto ships bound for America.
The Vice President's tour of Africa comes as the US seeks to repair ties with the continent after relations deteriorated under the previous administration. The US unveiled an African strategy in August last year, with an eye on bolstering democracy on the continent. Harris' visit is seen as a move to counter China and Russia's expanding influence in Africa.

Statement regarding Indigenous People of the Biafra (IPOB) & the Global Terrorism Index Statement regarding Indigenous People of the Biafra (IPOB) & the Global Terrorism Index. The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is a pro-Biafra secessionist movement based in Southeast Nigeria that aims to establish an independent state of Biafra.
IPOB was proscribed as a terrorist group by the Nigerian government in 2017. In recent years, IPOB has been linked to several attacks, which have been attributed to its paramilitary wing, the Eastern Security Network (IPOB-ESN). The group has not claimed responsibility for any of these attacks.
It is important therefore to differentiate between the peaceful activities of the group and its alleged involvement in violent activity. We have today updated the Global Terrorism Index 2023 to reflect this necessary clarification.

Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi has joined the race for the 10th Senate Presidency. Umahi said this on Wednesday in Abakaliki when he addressed members of the state executive council, saying that he was eminently qualified for the position.
“I appeal to the party’s national leadership, the president-elect and his vice to zone the Senate presidency to South East.
“They should also zone the House of Representatives speakership to the North-West as these would calm frayed nerves.
“This will show Nigerians that we are on the path of total renewal of the country which it direly needs presently,” he said. The governor urged the Senate to set aside the rule which allowed only high ranking senators to contest for the position.
“God breaks barriers and everyone elected into the Senate is the best.
“We should allow God choose who leads the Senate and not set obstacles on our ways,” he said. He said that he was presenting himself for the position because he had requisite experience in public service among other experiences.
“I have been into public service for the past 16 years and being a state governor is more complex.
“We have made Ebonyi totally an APC state, notching the three senatorial seats and four out of the six house of representative seats.
“The south east zone voted massively for the APC as I seek everyone’s prayers and support to achieve the goal.
“This is however subject to the decision of the party’s national leadership and I will not go against such,” he said.Umahi also urged candidates who lost the 2023 presidential election to withdraw their litigations and support Sen. Bola Tinubu to unite the country.
“This is time for the country’s leaders to make sacrifices in uniting the country as the task before us is enormous,” he said.
NakedTruth4eva: On what locus standi did the Supreme court nullify Leo's election as the governor of Bayelsa state due to the qualification of his deputy candidate elect? It was a suit brought by the PDP against Leo's APC. The lower courts erred. The matter of a person's qualification is not an internal party affair. We'll see what happens
2mch: The wheel chair rumor and picture of the CJN was started by Sam Amadi on Twitter. So, People’s Gazette will eventually tell us who their reliable source was.
