Overheating can be caused by so many factors. In my opinion, it can sometimes be difficult to diagnose. In addition to points mentioned by erico2k2, some factors to also consider include: - clogged radiator fins - fans blowing in wrong direction - clogged exhaust system - collapsing water hose - bad thermostat You may still have a head gasket leak if the job wasn't properly done. A pressure test on the cooling system will help with that. |
Sure. It is possible. Cost is likely to be prohibitive (very high). At a minimum, will need diesel engine, gearbox (diesels don't spin as fast as petrols and have much higher torque), fuel pump(s), maybe new tank, engine control unit (brain box(es)), wiring harness, instrument cluster, CV axles, etc. Like nurey said, better to buy another car. |

SmartchoicesNG:When head gasket is doubled, compression becomes less due to increase in cylinder volume. Effects will be loss of power, high fuel consumption, etc. The car won't drive as good as previously. Also, head gasket failure is more likely as the gasket isn't designed to be doubled. |

You have seriously thought about or are thinking of getting that new car. It looks great and you will be the cynosure of all eyes when you take a drive in it. The odometer has lots of zeros in it and you are feeling immune to breakdowns, at least for a couple of years. That new car smell seems irresistible to you too. You are also tired of spending most of your weekends fixing your previous car at a roadside mechanic's. Well, all that glitters isn't gold. Here are some downsides of getting a new car in Nigeria. 1. Price No gainsaying, new cars can be really pricey. If you got the cash, ride on. Regarding spares, you may be restricted to new ones which can be very pricey due to the unavailability of used parts on the market as a result of car being new. Furthermore, dealer service fees can be extremely high. 2. Depreciation Once you drive that new car off the dealer lot, its value can drop by as much as 30 percent. 3. Features and Specifications From my personal experience, the average new car sold in Nigeria has fewer standard features compared to those found in other countries, such as USA. I won't mention any brands. You can carry out your research online and visit a Nigerian dealer to know what is on offer. Examples of items to look out for include safety systems (such as number of airbags, belt tensioners, ABS, Brake assist, traction control, etc.), engine capacity or displacement, alloy wheels, moonroof, trip computer, entertainment systems, emissions systems, etc. 4. Warranty According to Google, warranty means a written guarantee, issued to the purchaser of an article by its manufacturer, promising to repair or replace it if necessary within a specified period of time. In Nigeria, this process can be very lengthy and usually ends up being a bitter experience for most people. If the issue is really serious and the car is unusable, you are not likely to be provided with a replacement vehicle pending when your car gets repaired or replaced. Also, new car owners can be coerced into paying for repairs to speed up the process of getting their cars back on the road. 5. Time-consuming routine maintenance / service It is not uncommon to spend up to 4 hours for a routine oil-change at the dealer's. The new car owner is usually left without a car during this time. Owners are left with no other option due to fear of voiding their warranties. 6. Sloppy service Uncommon issues can be left unsolved with very flimsy excuses and after lengthy periods. This can be extremely frustrating , especially if large amounts of money have been obtained from the new car owner. At times, the gullibility of the new car owner is taken advantage of by the technicians. 7. Public security In Nigeria, cars can be seen as a measure of success. Buying a new car can easily send a public message that owner is extremely rich. This may lead to visits from men of the underworld or abduction for ransom. 8. Hazardous roads and other conditions It is no news that most Nigerian roads are bad and hazardous. Damage to your new car may be uncovered by insurance and warranty. Also, your new car may be damaged by a rickety vehicle and it may take months for your insurance claim to go through. 9. Neglected Recalls Occasionally, car manufacturers recall their cars to fix some manufacturing defects. New car owners in Nigeria are usually left out of this exercise. 10. Increased Anxiety levels A new car can lead to higher levels of anxiety. This can arise due to fear of something bad happening to that new "baby". ***bonus*** A new car can increase advances from ladies towards both single and married guys. To be forewarned is to be forearmed. Please feel free to comment or add your own disadvantages. |

Are those the only codes obtained? Are the Air-fuel sensors connected and have their wiring intact? Do your fans come on automatically or run all the time? Know if the engine still has the thermostat installed? |
An airbag light will not go off unless the fault is rectified and system codes erased using a professional scan tool. Small handheld scanners are usually incapable of scanning SRS systems. Go do SRS system scan, fix issue and have the system reset. Your light will stay off afterwards if no new issues are detected. |
A couple of factors could lead to a rebuild failure 1. Substandard parts These are not likely to stand the test of time, by withstanding all the necessary forces. Using Toyota engine parts in a Honda engine is a definite no-no due to different engine specs, such as material composition, size, compression ratio, power ratings, heat tolerance, etc. 2. Measurements It requires a ton of work for a successful rebuild. A critical aspect is measurement of critical parts using appropriate tools such as vernier calipers, micrometer screw gauges, torque wrenches, etc. If a part is already worn beyond specified requirement, it must be replaced. Some important measurements include cylinder bore, crankshaft bearings, cylinder head flatness / thickness, camshaft bearings and caps, etc. Also, all parts must be tightened to spec using torque wrenches. 3. One-time use parts Some parts should not be reused once taken apart from an engine. Parts such as cylinder head bolts, head gasket, crankshaft bolts, etc. must be replaced. 4. Other reasons Double head gasket, improper break-in procedure, dirty rebuild environment, use of oversized parts, failure to use assembly lube, wrong lubricant, etc. If a rebuild is carried out exactly according to manufacturer's service manual, the engine is much likely to operate as intended, as good as new or even better than new, with some calculated technical mods. |
ayokenny37:If your check-engine light is on, run a diagnosis on the car. Whatever codes you get, you can report back on here. Also, have the fuel tank strainer cleaned or replaced, and also the fuel filter, if they haven't been done recently. |
Driving on most Nigerian roads can be accurately described as severe driving conditions, with much dust, traffic jams or holdups, smoke, frequent acceleration / deceleration, etc. It must be noted that there is also a time frame attached to oil-change intervals, e.g. 5000 km / 3 months (whichever comes first). Also, an improperly tuned or faulty engine (eg. one that burns a lot of petrol and emits black smoke) will need even more frequent oil-changes than severe conditions, because of the high amounts of carbon-buildup, which can easily lead to increased engine wear. |
2001 Camry is relatively more reliable than 2003 Camry. 03 Camry 4 - cylinder can be especially more problematic than the V6 version. Either way, have a pre-purchase inspection done by a competent mechanic. |
