Nigeria’s fastest growing hip hop artiste, Ice Prince, recently won BET award. It’s been noticed that those who were a force in the genre are nowhere to be found. While some say it is due to breakups from labels by some strong members, others say it depends on time and ability to blend ineasily. ANTHONY ADA ABRAHAM takes a look at brightest and famous Nigerian artistes and their current figures in the music industry.

Nigerian entertainment industry has lots of potentials and they help in the sustenance of the height and level placed by other African and European counterparts who hold it in high esteem because of the possible market they could open for themselves. The different music genres help in letting those who have more interest in a particular style feel it by giving more attention.

Ice Prince And Rap Music

Nigeria rap music has come a long way in shaping the music industry. The growth in the genre has helped in bringing world’s renowned hardcore and soft rap musicians to Nigeria either on tour or for collaboration.
Recently, Nigeria's superstar, PanshakZamani popularly known as Ice Prince, represented to the fullest at the recently concluded BET Awards on 30th June, 2013 in Los Angeles.

The event, hosted by the veteran comedian/actor, Chris Tucker, saw Ice Prince win the prestigious award for Best International Act – Africa. Unlike the past two years where two artistes shared the BET Award in that category, Ice Prince stood alone this year as the winner.

A big attestation that the young artiste,Ice Prince, who attended St. Murumba’s College, Jos, the same school that produced superstars P-Square and Mikel Obi, and Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State, among others, also attended the Science Tutorial College in Jos, where in 1998 he began writing hip hop music.
In 2002, he got together with a couple of his friends and formed a group called the Ecomog Squad. In 2004, he met hit makers like the Abaga brothers - M.I. and Jesse Jagz at a young persons' forum. He is now fast becoming the best even when the rap music in Nigeria is fast fading away.

Other Rappers and Their Current State
According to Matthew X-T, there was a time when Nigeria could boast of strong artistes like
EedrisAbdulkareem, Mode 9, Rugged Man, Terry Da Rapman, OD, Sauce Kid, Dat, Nigga Raw, Lambothe Virus, Gino, Ghetto P, Freestyle andDurella whose songs are worth following.
Also ladies like Sasha, Bouqui, Muna, Eva are still active in the genre but seem to be interested in something else.

For Jude Abaga, better known by stage name M.I, (Mr Incredible), who has won several awards including the MTV Africa Music Awards 2009 and was nominated for BET 2010 Awards for the Best International Act Category, he rose to prominence in 2006, when his song,CrowdMentality, became popular in his hometown Jos. Signed to Chocolate City music label on the 11th of December 2008, M.I released his critically acclaimed debut album, Talk About It.

Tripol of Blaze-A-Mic describes M.I's flow as "easy going but full of punches". His similarities in styles have also been drawn to renowned rappers such as Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Jay-Z. But recently, it seems things are not going as supposed. While some sayit’s the X-factor fever that is weighing him down, others say he is still very active.

According to VickySlosh, MI is still very sound in rap music but the present crop of hip-hop artistes like Vector are really giving them a run for their money.

Mode 9
Until tomorrow, many music lovers will continue to see Mode 9 as the best rapper Nigeria has ever had. His punch lines are crazy, though his publicity has not been strong; he has contributed his quota just like Overdose and EedrisAbdulkareem to the genre.

The artiste said in an interview that he fell in love with hip-hop when he heard Grandmaster Flash the Furious Five, one of the most revered music icons back in the early 80's, that “it was a crazy new experience. I couldn’t stop thinking about it,” he said.

He believes that Trybesmen, Rugged Man etc are not prominent the way they ought to be even when they have been there for quite a long time. “They are not even emerging, they are okay!!! But we still got a lot of trashy artistes in the system,” he added.

Though he believes MI is better than Ice Prince, he said he won't work with any of them. “I had a very bad experience with one.So I'm watching my back.”

The Future

Ghanaian hip hop artiste, Sakodie, is also fast becoming a force to be reckoned with in Africa because of the niche he has carved for himself. He has featured big rap artistes including Ice Prince of Nigeria.
If more prominence is not given to the genre and the future that would make it better and more publicized, rap music will diminish just like the ghetto music which Nigeria was known for by the Jamaican.

Ice Prince’s best international act award at the BET is one of the biggest in his career. He should use the opportunity to collaborate with world class Wale of MayBach music, Miguel and others to keep the tempo high in order not to fade in fame.

It seems that Mr Kehinde Oloyede, the estranged husband of popular Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele is out on a mission to ridicule her by all means possible. But what could have gone wrong?

In his reaction to why he broke up with his wife on Facebook, Mr Oloyede said: “I did so to catch Funke Akindele’s attention”!

So, how come he had to announce their break up on facebook to catch his wife’s attention? Could it be that she has not been giving him attention, especially in the bedroom, as his wife?

Source hinted that Funke Akindele actually parked out of their home about two months ago, leaving her husband in the cold.

When REMINISCE dropped that line on his track “Government”, where he featured Olamide, he definitely knew what he was talking about. He simply means he is very versatile with his music, and he proved it on this new song titled “FaNTASi”. The joint is straight up for the streets, a fuji song, produced by the monster himself SARZ.

Reminisce dropped the Intro (REMinisce) to his sophomore album “ALAGA IBILE” few weeks ago. This right here is way different from the Intro, “FaNTASi” is a fuji song, and it’s the first official single off his sophomore album.

Starboy Wizkid replaced his damaged 15million naira Porsche Panamera with a brand new one few weeks ago after crashing it in an accident. Some people saw this as lavishing money, and Wizzy was heavily criticized by fan for doing so, while he got congratulatory messages as well.

However, in a recent interview he granted Encomium Magazine, Wizkid addressed the issue saying that he works hard and he can spend his money anyhow he wants it.

Here is what he told Encomium Magazine;

“I needed to get another one because, after the accident, I didn’t have a car and I have to move around. I started taking cabs before I decided to buy this new car to move around.
It is needed for work. And I don’t think there is anything wrong in splashing millions in car. If someone works hard and decides to spent money on something that he thinks is good for him, why not? In fact, I don’t think there is need to justify where it is wrong or not. I work hard and I will enjoy my money.”

An impostor who has been taking advantage of unsuspecting victims claiming to be a rep for Wizkid and EME is finally in police custody. Wizkid was scrutinized by fans for allegedly not showing up at events already paid for by organizers. On a campaign to clear the air, the EME released this press statement

Nigerian pop star Wizkid has spoken out against his continuous impersonation by fraudsters. The hit maker, bugged by increasing complaints and reported incidents, says he’s worried and beyond scandalised, that some bandits would go to any length to perpetrate evil acts and defraud innocent fans and customers.

The EME act spoke today in Lagos, while reacting to on-going investigations on recent discoveries and arrests.

“It’s unfair that fraudsters will take advantage of unsuspecting victims.” he said.

‘The culprit has been apprehended and all is being done to make sure such incidents don’t reoccur.” Wizkid added.

An EME impostor is currently in police custody. He was handed over to the police by his latest victim- Muyiwa.

Muyiwa also known as ‘Origin’ started transactions with the impostor, only to discover he was being duped and quickly handed him over to the police.

Meanwhile, EME Chairman Banky W who has himself been a victim of impersonation, says the label is putting all structures in place, while working with relevant authorities to make sure the trend is put to a stop.

Fake names, phone numbers and bank accounts have been set up to carry out such fraudulent activities. Some of the fake accounts these impostors use include “Bankole Wellington Banky W” on Facebook,Bankyw82@yahoo.com, emeonline82@yahoo.com,godwintom1@gmail.com,starboyentertainment@rocketmail.com. The only authorised contact for EME is bookings@empirematesentertainment.com

“Impersonating artists and record labels is apparently the new 419. This is not a unique problem to EME or it’s acts, but a serious challenge to most major labels/artists as well as the fans and event organizers. We’ve done the best we can to streamline our processes so that anyone, anywhere can contact us at Bookings@empirematesentertainment.com or at +234 818 000 0000 and know that they have right information.” Banky says.

“It saddens us to know that crooks still try to take advantage of our fans and supporters but we are doing all we can to put the right info out and we hope that everyone takes note, so as not to fall into their traps.” He adds.

Wizkid does not take bookings or accept engagement payments into his account. He can only be booked through EME and/or his manager Godwin Tom.

The label says the Police will still apprehend more fraudsters.

Popular Ghanaian actress, Juliet Ibrahim questions the $100,000 reportedly required for OJB Jezreel’s kidney transplant.

The light skinned beauty in a statement posted on Instagram said, ‘I know a kidney transplant will not cost more than 50k USD. Why are they requesting 100K when so many deals with cheaper hospitals out there in India even in Ghana can be worked out?’

Miss Ibrahim who incidentally runs a kidney foundation also added, ‘To get the necessary help, those in charge of OJB’s fundraising need to reach out to the right people and stop harassing celebrities for funds’,

While also saying that people should refrain from harassing celebs over donations for the transplant she told fans, ‘Who said your 1000 Naira can not amount to something that can raise the sum needed for OJB’s transplant’.

Meanwhile fans have continued to harass celebs on social media for alleged poor response to donation requests for the ailing producer’s transplant.
