jamebex: Hi all, Compliment! I'd like to get some advice from you guys.

I'm not entirely a novice on the subject having followed this thread for quite some time now.

To start with, I'm a graduate of Biochemistry from a State University in Nigeria. I graduated with a not so great CGPA albeit that it is not poor either, 4.06 out of a possible 5.0. Huhhhh poor me!

I am currently serving my Fatherland (NYSC) and would like to further my studies in Canada, that is, get a Masters in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology even go on to PhD; I'd like to be a research Prof. I am looking at the Fall 2013 or Winter 2015 cycle.

Firstly, I have come up with a list of three schools I'd like to apply to, they are McMaster University, Dalhousie University and University of Calgary.
I'd like to get general comment about my choice of school considering my choice of course.

Secondly, I have somewhat researched the schools and they stated on their website that all Graduate students admitted into the program are guaranteed a Graduate stipend which covers Tuition and cost of living, however they can't be accepted into the program without first getting a supervisor.
How difficult is getting supervisor in those schools and how can i set up myself to stand a better chance. I don't have millions to spend oh!, I am just serving and want to go after service.
First, you misinterpreted the information on the website. The free tuition fee and cost of leaving is for student with scholarship or funding. Furthermore, I doubt you can secure funding with your CGPA because there are lots of indian guru with superb CGPA with publications and working experience. You need to make sure you have acess to fund for your studies if u been admitted. What I am sure of, is the teaching assistant job for all Graduate students admitted. I will advice you to write a very good research proposal, that is your working tool for master by research in canada. Once you got supervisor, admission is guarantee or funding, depends. So don't believe you wouldnt spend million but you might be lucky. Second option, you can check usa universities out. They got more scholarship for science. All the best

Thanks and I appreciate any advice and insight that will be offered.

Seattle_King: Hello House,

Am a 2010 First Class Graduate of Applied Physics, CGPA of 4.63/5.0, i currently work wif one d Big Four accounting firms as a Petroleum Accountant.
I specialised in Applied Geophysics in my Bsc and wana go for Msc Integrated Petroleum Geoscience in univ. of Alberta, Canada next year fall.
Do you fink i can Qualify for that,...... this Univ. of Alberta can be very competitive. I also hope to get some clues on going about the admission process from you guys.
I will commend you for the job done is obtaining first class, however there arr few things to do to secure admission in canada. Infact you can get scholarship. I will advise you to apply to department of physics and choose your area of research interest. Don't just apply to university of Alberta. Check other universities like regina university and universiy of saschatwan. After your programme you can move to Alberta. The sky is Your Limit. All the best

Thanks for your response.

Great thread you have here. I am currently studying medicine in one of the Nigeria Universities, but i want to study medicine in USA or Canada(it will better for me cos of adapting to the environment.)
My questions are as follows:
1. I will need suggestions of universities in above countries. cheap and also of standard
2. The requirements in every aspect as it concerns me schooling there.
3. General advice.
Note: I don't have Either TOEFL or GRE SAT
Let it be that i was here to seek for help and i got it. I want to share my testimony here. pls answers needed. Thanks in advance.
Before rendering advice, I will like to know your present year of study? Furthermore, medicine is a good course, however it is expensive in most universities in advance world. If you are looking towards usa or canada, you will need TOEFL or IELTS. If you are currently in your penultimate year in medical school, you can complete your study and progress to medical registration in canada. It is an hard nut to crack for international students to get admission into medical school in canada or usa except you secure scholarship in nigeria or commonwealth. Although, if you have your fund you can crack on with SAT and TOEFL. Other option is to email the school about credit transfer, that will be best in usa because canada medical school is tougher. Just weigh the options mentioned coupled with your financial situation to know what you will opt for all the best mate!

careerwoman: well, thanks for the info..however,I've checked the AMC website several times and the whole registration process. It looks very cumbersome and I know it will only take the grace of God and extreme hardwork for a recent nigerian medical graduate to be successful. this because the educational standards in Nigeria is quite low compared to that in developed countries. i checked the medical curriculum of most Australian universities, they were very concise and strongly centered on problem-based/self-directed learning.(no nig. university except UI uses this) well, my school has currently reviewed our curriculum and has started using that too but inconsistency,ASUU strike nd other strike actions, unavailabilty of funds e.t.c are hindering the success of the new curriculum.
about, being too futuristic, I think u got it wrong..i'm simply weighing my options and considering things.
afterall, everyone wants a better life/opportunities for themselves, family, and children;you wouldnt be in Aussie if you didn't..
I think you misunderstood UBteck. What he was trying to say is, its an hard nut to crack securing funding for medicine, as aunty Jenny advised too. You don't need to strech yourself at this time, rather you should concentrate on your programme in Nigeria. All the best.

There shouldn't be any problem regarding your application. It is only canada you need to proove 1 yr marital relationship before you can include your spouse. I will advice you to do the court marriage before February if possible, rather than waiting for the white wedding in febuary. Just give it a shot dear. Aunty Jenny can add to my suggestion.

seperately?i
Yes, you will pay for fees but it is lower than your husband, who is the main applicant. It is only dependant of research students that r exempted from paying fee when they apply with the main applicant. Also, remember you need to enrol your kids in a school before you apply for visa once they are aged 5 above. All the best

lexmikey: . This phd talk is getin really intresting.I have a Bsc an Msc in architecture frm two different universities in nigeria, with 3.6 n 3.2 cgpa respectively.I am currently expecting to join centinnial college by may.I do not have any publication but I have some independent research of mine dat could pass for that.(but not published),I also designed n built over 10houses in the past 3 years of my completing my msc which I started 2mnth after my NYSC.I work for me so I have no formal documentation as per employement.but I can provide aproved copies of building plans and picture of my work.I can also get recommendations frrom my past lecturers, as for the certification I have an associate membership with the NIA and I plan to do a quicky project mangment course but starts in january.my questions now are 1.can I get admited to study a phd in environmental science not the very compitetive archhitecture in unisak ,2.can this admission come b4 I resume with centennial in may,so I can transfer fund, that's considering the fundin wahala.3. would the immigration frown at my sudden swap esp wen they find out I hv a project management background and still enta plane come their dear country only to change my mind and migrate through a 4year Phd. 4.can I skip dat gmat exam thingy cos we don't get along fine.thanks for as u respond .
There is no assurance you can meet up with the application deadline for canada universities because most of the universities deadline is early December. Considering may for resumption date, it is impossible.
Two, PhD is about your research interest not the department itself. You need to write a good research proposal, because it is first step in research degree. Due to your area of degree, u can submit your portfolio. Building house doesn't really count, you need a company to give you work reference. It very good.
Furthermore, academic reference helps aswell.
There is no need for gmat since is not USA universities. Just write a very good research proposal and collate your portfolio. All the best

convenant child: Hi every1,pls I need to know if its possible to get study visa along with my kids. Is possible to change my school after getting to canada n transfer my tuision fee from d previous school to the new school
it is possible to apply with your kids. However, u need to show huge amount of money in your account. But why changing school? You need to make sure that your study permit does not exceeded the completion date of new school u wanna change to. Hence u need to notify the CIC in canada after changing school
TravelRe: Travelling To Canada Part 5 by surveyor1: 9:01pm On Dec 21, 2013
abbakacici: the problem apart from the gmat have i nothing special to shows, yes i might have first class in my masters but the result might not be WOW, so the question should try applying to some schools, because i don't want to waste my time, because in 2011 i waste like two months of my live applying to schools in turkey only to let find out they don't give admission to people with 2.2 , if you know many people in US and canada, with bad degree and Ok master result doing PHD, that means i get a chance, because i read like 20% of the pages and i only saw one person with 2.2 that get admission
Graduate research committe you various criteria when selecting candidates for admission. 1. Academic merit 2. Good academic reference
3. Working experience
4. Professional certification
5. Publications
so you got better chance of getting admission because you of your ACCA n GMAT, forget about your bsc grade since you have got other certification n experience to uplift the average degrees. Infact, you are not applying with just bsc , so why worrying. Give it a shot. Infact try usa school, admission is sure man.

abbakacici: i was planing on doing my PHD, in finance, banking or accounting , my first degree was not that greet just 2.2 but my masters result based on my first semester result is looking ok not great, like 4.2/5 and i like to keep it, so i am to paid my tuition fees my self ( non funding) what are my chances of getting admission with like 4-4.5/5 masters, partial though with my ACCA, with like 3 years working experience including NYSC without any major publication may be my master thesis and gmat score of 700, if i can get into good school i do not mind funding the program myself, do i have a shoot or i should just look elsewhere because i try checking some few university the competition is very tough like University of British Columbia, Sauder School of Business, have PHD in finance of competition is very high, most of the ten student they admitted this year have first class in both Idegree and masters with like 3.8/4 did internship in places like J.P morgan and Royal Bank of Canada, help some charity organisation etc, the only thing we have in common is our GMAT score with the class average being like 650 and i have 700.
so please what are my chances , please tell me the true if i have less chance because i don't want to waste like 1-2 months of my life, going though school websites, write personal statement, etc
I will advice you to structure a very good research proposal and make sure you have a strong GP in your masters. Try to submit your cv to supervisors first with your proposal. With your ACCA and working experience u have chances of been admitted in as much u are not seeking funding. I can Infer that you are opting for tough university, go and check lesser universities and apply. Like wysor, memorial university of newfoundland. Don't chose university of populous city or highly rated cities. Is damn too competitive. Give it a shot but try to search for supervisor first. All the best

I've made some research & I'm thinking University of Alberta or Calgary but I really do need more options. Any safety school(s) that offer a masters degree in Environmental Engineering/Technology would be just fine. Would love to apply for financial aid as well, just want a school with higher chances of admission & financial aid. No GRE required. Thank you all for keeping this thread live. I will advice you not to choose the aforementioned universities if you don't have first class, work experience and publication if you need scholarship. Canada university value publications if u applying for scholarship. You can search for less competitive universities.

I will advice you to complete your study in Nigeria and make sure you have first class or if you have money, you can opt for TAFE. Also, you can only work in Australia with visa that allow you to work eg student visa, work visa and permanent resident visa. How can you get this when you still undergraduate student in Nigeria? I will advice you not to travel to Australia with visit visa in order to work. It can't work. Remember is not USA and UK that people travel with visit visa and work illegally. It is tough in Australia, because australia immigration is stricter.

thank you for the detailed info.well,i read the licence thing from the australian medical council's website.they have a list of countries and recognised unis. i'm not really a fan of the US and australia is a great place to build a family and bring up children from my research. this last ASUU strike affected us big time ooo.med students dt shd hv graduated this yr will hv to mid nxt yr.also,NMA jst announced an indefinite strike action on monday.if it continues,it might affect clinical school nxt yr too.finally,I had 8A1s and C4 in English at O'level. can i still get a sponsor wiv the result either in nigeria or australia?
evry advice is well appreciated.
You had an excellent result. However, o level result is insufficient to get scholarship for medical schools. You need to write Cambridge A level. In overseas before you get admission to university, you either go to college or write A level exams. Is just like writing jamb exam for university. Roger that!
TravelRe: General Australian Visa Enquiries by surveyor1: 1:56am On Dec 19, 2013
careerwoman: hello everyone in the house.
well, ive been a visitor on this thread for some months nw and i would love to ask for some info frm you guys esp those that hv been successful in acquiring a visa to study or reside in australia.
I'm a third year medical student in a federal university in Nigeria. However, when this ASUU strike started,i got angry wiv the educational system in nigeria and how corruption has become the order of the day. Also, there re limited and outdated facilities in virtually all clinical schools in most universities offering medicine.federal unis like UI,OAU,UNIIILORIN,UNILAG nd UNN are a little bit ok but the medical degree is not recognised in most countries except US nd UK(if u have connection).during my research on Australia,i fell in love with the country because of its standard of living and abudant medical opportunities there.however,a medical degree frm nigeria is nt recognised by the australian medical council. they wldnt even let you write the license exam. so i summoned up courage to enquire abt starting afresh in any medical school.mehn,i got only negative responses dt i wldnt be able to study wivout a bsc frm a recognized uni,mcat/Gamsat,etc. also, the tuition fees re quite expensive(45-63k aud) bt i somehw belive dt if God lets me get an admission,dt the finances wldnt be a problem particularly if i get a sponsor since i'm a very brilliant student. after my research and enquiries abt medical programmes in several unis like unsw, unimelbourne, monash(offered me a credit transfer to biomed first which will be too timeconsuming(7yrs) since i'm a female(20 already)),uniadelaide, flinders, uninewcastle, and UQ; university of newcastle gave me the best offer to begin a TPP wiv them first in 2014 nd then gain an admission into their 5yr med ug program in 2015.also,their tuition is less expensive(43k) and since its a regional area, cost of living wld be affordable.the sch is also very outstanding in med too.however, the TPP is app 5M naira(tuition plus oshc nd living cost) nd my family can only afford 3M per yr nd this can only cover my livin cost.
however,if i can get the admission offer, wat re my chances of finding a sponsor(company or gov. or person)willing to cover at least the full or partial tution fee for my study. i also checked the master programme but it will be difficult to apply wiv my medical degree and get a supervisor for a project since nigerian med isnt recognised.
pls i need advice frm nlanders who hv experienced aussie first-hand esp in the medical field and pple who can link me wiv sponsors. shd i jst continue wiv my med here(wiv this poor facilities,ASUU,and recent NMA strike) and forget abt my dream of practicing in aussie someday? shd i get the offer frm uninewcastle and hope on God for a sponsor? i desire to be a world-class physician dt wld called someday to contribute to a new nigeria in the future(the nigeria now is in chaos).evry advice wld be appreciated.thanks.
You did a through research, which is quite good. To the best of my knowledge, Australia is good for medicine and you will earn a good remuneration. However, it will be difficult to get a scholarship for medicine without Cambridge A level with A in core subjects. Based on your condition I will advise you to complete your medicine in Nigeria because ASUU don't really affect medical students when you are in clinical class. Considering your financial capacity, it will be an hard nut to crack to get a funding to complete your programme. Besides, Australia scholarships are few and most of it is for phd students. So, to be realistic you can't get the money. Second option, , you might consider usa. Usa have loads of scholarship but u need to write SAT. Furthermore, where did u read that with nigeria medical degree u can't write licence examination for Australia? Have you email doctor connect in Australia? . If it is true. U can get licence in uk or usa and cross to Australia. All the best!

So,wt about if after my 8months course,I take a 1yr course? Does that lead to 3yrs pgd WP?
Your chances are slim if you opt for 8 months. I reckon 1yrs so you can obtain 1yr post graduation work permit. Something about Canada is, there are routes to get your PR as a student. U can apply through Canada experience class or provisional nominee in each province for international students. The set back in provisional nominee is u can only work in that province but with Canada experience class route for PR u can work anywhere.

You will only be eligible for 8 months post graduation work permit. To be eligible for post graduation work permit, you need to study minimum of 8 months. The only graduates they give an additional of 1 year to their normal work permit are students who studied for 2 yrs or more.

Lots of people makes mistake when choosing university in Canada without doing through research. University of manitoba is too competitive, so you need to have first class, work experience and publication to secure you an admission. Although they stated that 2:1 is there requirement but is too competitive. All the Indians guru with high GP and publication are competing with you for the same course or whatever. I reckon you don't choose all those high prestige universities in Canada Expecially for msc or phd without first class. Is not about agents, is just Canada system. University of manitoba, ,alberta, ontario etc in major cities are damn too competitive. You know what?since uk immigration rules have changed for international students, Canada is the countries people are heading to now. Just search for low prestige university like memorial university of newfoundland etc. Don't choose competitive uni. Check usa aswell. Lots of universities and you have better chance of getting admission. All the best!

PhD is the best option, however Canadian universities are competitive for phd students Expecially if you haven't published journals or articles. The good is once you admitted you will be giving teaching assistant or research assistant. Just try to write a very good research proposal first. The reason why am emphasizing this is the competition with other Indian students or Asians. They know the packaging when it comes to published. Just try and apply on time. All the best
