Foreign Affairs / Top 13 Interesting Facts About Thomas Sankara by Suurulere(m): 3:25pm On Aug 20, 2019
Born on December 21, 1949, at Yako in the dusty north of what was then Upper Volta, Thomas Isidore Noël Sankara was 12 when his homeland attained independence from France.

As the leader of his country through an August coup in 1983, Sankara would rename the country, Burkina Faso, or "land of the upright people", and introduce progressist policies that distanced his regime from other former colonies in what France regarded as its backyard in Africa.

Sankara was a lean and good-looking soldier with a ready smile. A lover of football and other sports, he was also a hard-working authoritarian who slept little and always wore battledress, with a mother-of-pearl pistol tucked into his belt -- a gift from North Korean leader Kim Il Sung.

He lived with his wife and two sons in a rundown presidential palace and his main worldly goods were a guitar and a second-hand Renault 5.

How well do you know Sankara? We have compiled the top 13 interesting facts you may not know about “Africa’s Che Guevara” in this video.

Foreign Affairs / They Lied To Us: The Iceberg Didn't Sink The Titanic by Suurulere(m): 10:06am On Aug 13, 2019
When the Titanic left Queenstown, Ireland, on April 11, 1912, with over 2,200 passengers and crew members bound for New York in the United States, most of those onboard probably believed the common myth that had been floating around for months: the Titanic was unsinkable.

Based upon news articles about the ship and advertisements from its owner, the White Star Line, it's clear that those who built the ship had designed it to be unsinkable.

When it was built and launched, the Titanic was the largest ship afloat. At 882.5 feet long, 92.5 feet wide, 175 feet high, the ship displaced 66,000 tons of water. It was the largest movable object ever made by Man. With newly-designed watertight compartments and remotely-operated, electronic watertight doors, it's easy to see why engineers believed the ship was practically unsinkable.

The Titanic, in addition to being exceptionally huge, was designed to be the ultimate in luxury travel. Never had there been a cruise ship with such magnificent features; a gymnasium, swimming pool, libraries, restaurants, and luxurious cabins.

The first few days of the Titanic's voyage went smoothly. On April 14, 1912, however, the Titanic hit an iceberg at 11:40 pm. At that time, the ship was approximately 375 miles south of Newfoundland in the northern Atlantic Ocean.

So...

How did the “unsinkable" Titanic sink?

Why did engineers think the Titanic was unsinkable?

What factors led to the sinking of the Titanic?

All of these and more in this video below…..

Politics / How David Ejoor Escaped Death In 1966 by Suurulere(m): 5:14pm On Feb 11, 2019
Saturday, January 15, 1966. 7:00am.
Ikoyi Hotel, Ikoyi, Lagos.

“Gbam, gbam, gbam.”

“Who for God’s sakes bangs my door this early morning?” A voice roared from inside the hotel room.

“Oga! Open the door. There is trouble oo,” the man replied.

“What the….” Lieutenant-Colonel David Ejoor stopped in the middle of his words as he noticed it was his driver that had been banging the door. “But I told you to get enough rest. I don’t want you sleeping on the wheels while driving me to Enugu.”

“It is not even about that, sir. The Prime Minister and some senior officers have been kidnapped by some soldiers. I even heard some of these officers have been killed.”

“What? Are you sure of what you are saying? Hope you are not drunk this early morning?” Ejoor asked with a surprised look.

“I’m very sure sir. I slept over at Apapa. There have been troop movements up and down since 3:00am. I later heard that they came here to this hotel. That’s why I came rushing down to check on you.”

“Yes! I now agree that you are drunk,” Ejoor said nodding his head.

“I’m not drunk sir, that’s the truth.”

While Ejoor was still waiving off his driver contending he was drunk, Largema’s driver came rushing in and showed the men bullet casings he found in front of his superior’s hotel room.

The three men then went to Largema’s room upstairs to find traces of blood which had congealed on the corridor and the telephone hook that was still dangling.

Dazed, flustered and fluttered, Ejoor staggered back to his room, changed into his military kit and directed his driver to 8, Ikoyi Crescent, Ikoyi, Lagos, the home of the Adjuntant-General, the officer who handled the death of soldiers in the army, to take some of the blood samples to really determine whether it was Largerma that had been murdered in cold blood.

Ejoor was still skeptical of the events he just found himself in. He wanted answers.

“Who could have had the audacity to murder a commander of a whole battalion?” He thought to himself as his driver approached the residence of Lieutenant-Colonel James Yakubu Pam.

***************************************************************

“Morn’g sir,” Ejoor saluted the GOC on sighting him as he entered the Battalion HQ conference room. Ironsi who had his back to Ejoor, turned and on seeing him quickly drew out his pistol and pointed it at him.

“Ha! David, who sent you to kill me?”

Ejoor was stunned but he subtly replied, “No one sir. Why would I kill you?”

The GOC stared at him for a moment, read his body language and then holstered his weapon.

“I’m sorry I had to react that way. The events of the past few hours have taken toll on me. I don’t know who to trust. In fact, I do not trust any officer right now”

“It’s alright sir. That’s why I’m here. But first of all, I need to know what is really going on? Largema is dead, Pam is unaccounted for and I found the Brigadier’s residence deserted. I then went over to your house but Madame directed me here. Sir, what’s going on?” Ejoor asked with a confused look.

“Largema is dead?” Ironsi asked as he sank into a chair.

“Affirmative sir. He was murdered in front of his room. I saw it myself.”

“How did you know that David?” Ironsi stood up and towered above the young officer who did not flinch at all.

“We lodged in the same hotel sir.”

“How then, did you escape?” Ironsi asked with a suspicious look.

“I didn’t sir. I never encountered the killers. I never knew until this morning when my driver came banging at my door. I changed my hotel room. So they must have missed me if I was their target in the first place,” Ejoor answered boldly.

Ejoor was right. As the Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion in Enugu, he had received a signal in the name of Brigadier Zakariya Mai-Malari on the 9th of January that he was invited to a three-day Brigade Training Conference on the 12th to 14th January, in Apapa, Lagos.

On the 10th of January, Ejoor left for Lagos and was booked into room 17 of the Ikoyi Hotel. However, when he returned from the day’s programme on the 13th of January, the air conditioning system had been left on all day which caused the room to be extremely cold.

He then opened the windows to thaw the coldness of the room after he had changed into his nightwear only to discover his privacy could be easily seen by anyone in the adjacent buildings. He loved his privacy and would not like to encounter prying eyes.

The following morning, he asked for a change of room at the reception. After the conference training of 14th January, he went to Mai-Malari’s residence for the cocktail at 7:30pm and had planned to leave around 9pm because he had to return to Enugu by road the next morning but he left around 11pm. The next morning, he woke up to his driver banging on his door.

It is still operational. Sorry for replying late. There are no fixed schedules. But target Tuesday, the Ilorin-Lagos route.. Nevertheless, the journey would be worthless except you have cargo. Ibadan to Lagos is nearly 5 hours by train due to stops and potential mechanical faults which is bound to happen 97% of the time.

Politics / Re: BREAKING: "How Can You Honour Abiola And Still Honour Abacha" - Soyinka LIVE by Suurulere(m): 1:34pm On Jun 12, 2018
If Soyinka were the NECON chairman instead of Nwosu in 1993, all these controversies might not have happened. Nwosu chickened out when he should have defied all odds and spake the truth. He should have gone to Abuja to spit at their faces; he chickened out again. How pusillanimous!

However, Gani would have been disappointed in his family accepting that award. He would have rejected it. Certainly not from Buhari "a repented democrat" who still eulogise Abacha (the fourth most corrupt leader in history). So, Soyinka has asked the big question. Is Mr President intelligent enough to answer it?

However, before we crucify Buhari, let's save some nails for Jonathan who also eulogised Abacha in 2014. We are cursed with bad leaders afterall-a reward for a sinful nation.

The euphoria that follows Abacha's death 20 years ago still rings loud at the highest decibels in my ears. The investiture programme in Abuja is in its best a facade, a farce, a pantomime and waste of the nation's resources.

May the dead keep resting.

Politics / Buhari Still Uses Jonathan’s Old Cars by Suurulere(m): 2:21pm On May 04, 2018
A closer look shows that the black Mercedes Benz Maybach is old, the colour is devoid of any sheen and there are scratches at the back bumper. Even the tyres appear to have seen better days. NAN.ng learnt President Buhari has refused to change the fleet he inherited from his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, since 2015.

In 2016, the president, who had cut his salary by 50 per cent, struck out a move to spend N400 million on new cars for him. The money was to be used to buy five new armoured Mercedes Benz S-600 (V222) cars.

President believes the cars passed on to him, can still last another 10 years, thus helping the nation conserve scarce funds. No wonder, the Buhari government, as Vice President Osinbajo has said repeatedly, is doing much more with the nation’s financial resources, despite the declining income. This is in sharp contrast with the profligate Jonathan years, when oil at a stage was selling at $140 a barrel and the nation became poorer for it.

Sports / Arsene Wenger: Arsenal Boss To Leave Club At End Of Season by Suurulere(m): 10:08am On Apr 20, 2018
Arsene Wenger is to leave Arsenal at the end of the season, ending a near 22-year reign at the club.

The Frenchman departs a year before his latest contract was due to expire.

The Gunners are sixth in the league and set to miss out on a top-four spot for the second straight season, with their hopes of reaching the Champions League resting on winning the Europa League.

Wenger, 68, won three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups, including the Double in 1998 and 2002.

Appointed on 1 October 1996, he is the Premier League's current longest-serving manager and has taken charge of a record 823 games.

But some fans have turned on the Frenchman over the past two seasons as a result of their league performances.

Sunday's 2-1 defeat at Newcastle was their 11th in the league this season, equalling their worst tally in a campaign under Wenger.

They are 33 points behind leaders Manchester City, who have 87 points, and the same number away from bottom side West Brom, who have 21.

Arsenal finished outside the top four last term for the first time since Wenger arrived at the club, and are now 14 points behind fourth-placed Tottenham, with five matches remaining.

They face Spanish side Atletico Madrid, who are second in La Liga, in the Europa League semi-finals, with the first leg on Thursday.

Foreign Affairs / 50 Years After: 25 Interesting Facts You Didn't Know About Martin Luther King Jr by Suurulere(m): 2:33pm On Apr 04, 2018
On this day in 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968), an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement in the United States from 1954 through 1968, was fatally shot at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968 and was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he later died.

King was a prominent leader of the Civil Rights Movement and Nobel Peace Prize laureate who was known for his use of nonviolence and civil disobedience. His last words were to musician Ben Branch, who was scheduled to perform that night at a planned event. King said, "Ben, make sure you play 'Take My Hand, Precious Lord' in the meeting tonight. Play it real pretty."

Below are some interesting facts you did not know about the revered Reverend and activist:

1. Martin Luther King was born Michael Lewis King. His father changed his own name to Martin Luther, after the German preacher and reformist, and he renamed his son the same.

2. King suffered from depression throughout much of his life. As a child, he befriended a white boy whose father owned a business near his family's home. When the boys were six, they started school: King had to attend a school for African Americans and the other boy went to one for whites. King lost his friend because the child's father no longer wanted the boys to play together.

3. At the age of 12, King blamed himself for his grandmother's death and attempted suicide by jumping out of a second-story window but he survived.

4. King was a precocious child. He skipped both the ninth and the twelfth grade, entering college when he was only fifteen. At 19, he received a degree in sociology and earned a PhD in theology seven years later at 26. He eventually garnered another fifty or so honorary degrees from various colleges and universities around the country before his death at the age of 39.

5. Martin Luther King was a life-long smoker.

6. King was jailed 29 times, charged with everything from civil disobedience to driving five miles over the speed limit.

7. On October 14, 1964, King became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, until Malala Yousafzai in 2014, which was awarded to him for leading nonviolent resistance to racial prejudice in the U.S. He donated all $54,123 of the prize money to the civil rights movement.

8. King became romantically involved with the white daughter of an immigrant German woman. He planned to marry her, but friends advised against it, saying that an interracial marriage would provoke animosity from both blacks and whites. King broke off the relationship after six months. He never recovered.

9. King was 24 and his wife was 26 when they got married. They had four children together. Three are still alive.

10. In 1957, King and other civil rights activists founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). He led the SCLC until his death.

11. King survived an assassination attempt in 1958 after being stabbed in the chest by a deranged woman. He spent several weeks in surgery.

12. In 1963, the FBI, under written directive from Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, tapped King's telephone line suspecting he was a Communist.

13. King organized and led marches for blacks' right to vote, desegregation, labor rights, and other basic civil rights. Most of these rights were successfully enacted into the law of the United States with the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

14. In the 1963 March on Washington, King delivered a 17-minute speech, later known as "I Have a Dream''. It came to be regarded as one of the finest speeches in the history of American oratory.

15. On April 4, 1967, exactly one year before his death—King delivered a speech titled "Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence." He spoke strongly against the U.S.'s role in the war, arguing that the U.S. was in Vietnam "to occupy it as an American colony" and calling the U.S. government "the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today."

16. Martin Luther King is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using the tactics of nonviolence and civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs and inspired by the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi.

17. On April 4, 1968, King was fatally shot by James Earl Ray at 6:01 p.m. The bullet entered through his right cheek, smashing his jaw, then traveled down his spinal cord before lodging in his shoulder. He died at the hospital an hour later at 7:05 p.m.

18. President Lyndon B. Johnson declared April 7, 1968 a national day of mourning for the civil rights leader.

19. King made a request that at his funeral no mention of his awards and honors be made, but that it be said that he tried to "feed the hungry", "clothe the naked", "be right on the [Vietnam] war question", and "love and serve humanity."

20. King's favourite hymn was "Take My Hand, Precious Lord". It was sung at his funeral.

21. On January 17, 2000, Martin Luther King Jr. Day was officially observed in all fifty U.S. states.

22. King’s mother, Alberta Williams King, was also shot and killed at the age of 69.

23. As a Christian minister, King's main influence was Jesus Christ and the Christian gospels. His faith was strongly based in Jesus' commandment of loving your neighbor as yourself, loving God above all, and loving your enemies, praying for them and blessing them.

24. King’s autopsy revealed that stress had taken a major toll on his body. Despite being just 39 at the time of his death, one of the doctors noted that he had “the heart of a 60-year-old”.

25. In 1977, the Presidential Medal of Freedom (the highest civilian award of the United States of America) was posthumously awarded to King by President Jimmy Carter.
