Exactly my question. If they care so much for the welfare of Nigerians they should be building these houses for other sectors too not just judiciary! And the crazy thing is that the judiciary is supposed to be independent! Wow this is absurd. I can’t believe people are defending this obvious/transparent gift to the judiciary. How will the judiciary reward the government for this house they received from the FG? What leverage does the judiciary have that they could pull to benefit any group?

This nonsense has been going on for years and it's destroying the country. The judiciary is supposed to be a completely independent check on executive power, not a subsidiary branch funded by executive generosity.

Naija people really need to open their eyes and start seeing acts like this as a straightforward act to erode the fabric of independent judiciary. Are the judges going to pay for the houses? Are the houses free or subsidized for them? If they are free or subsidized, how will the judges reciprocate the generosity from the federal government?

How can any ordinary citizen expect a fair hearing against the Federal Government when the presiding judges are living in multi-billion naira houses gifted by that same government? If the state wants to improve judicial welfare, build a transparent, institutional budget for the judiciary.

Gifting individual mansions directly from the presidency is a strategic move to compromise neutrality, period.

Imagine calling a multi-billion naira Abuja mansion 'welfare.'

If the executive is so passionate about
welfare packages, let them extend that same luxury energy to the doctors, teachers, and civil servants who are actually keeping the country alive on starvation wages.

They only look after the judges because they know they'll need them when election petitions roll in. It looks exactly like institutional bribery, plain and simple, and it has probably completely eroded public trust in our courts. Nigerians really need to band together to stop this systemic corruption. No one else will come fix Nigeria for us…it’s us alone oh and the earlier we recognize that the better.

Welfare package for Appeal Court judges? Who are they trying to deceive? Average Nigerians are struggling to eat, buy fuel, or afford basic rent, but the executive arm has billions to gift luxury mansions to the judiciary. No true democracy allows judges to accept massive financial favors from the very government whose policies and elections they are supposed to scrutinize. Dr. Baba-Ahmed is 100% right, this is likely a systemic inducement disguised as charity. You cannot expect a judge to be blind to justice when they are looking at the executive with gratitude for a free mansion.

First, welfare is not bribery. Proper housing for judicial officers is part of strengthening institutions. A judge handling multi-billion-naira disputes should not be living in uncertainty or begging landlords.

Second, judicial independence is not protected by poverty. A poorly housed, poorly paid and economically vulnerable judge is easier to compromise. Welfare is actually an anti-corruption tool.

Third, these are not private gifts secretly handed to judges in envelopes. They are official government-provided residences tied to office and institutional welfare. That distinction matters.

Fourth, if improving judges’ welfare is now bribery, then salaries, official cars, security, medical care and retirement benefits must also be called bribes. That is absurd.

Fifth, perception matters, yes. But perception cannot replace logic. The solution is transparency, not hysteria.

Baba-Ahmed’s argument sounds clever, but it collapses under scrutiny. You cannot demand an independent judiciary while opposing the material conditions that make independence possible.

Judges should be well paid, well housed and well protected — not because they are above citizens, but because justice itself must be insulated from desperation, intimidation and inducement.

A joint statement signed by Falana in his capacity as National Chairman of the Alliance on Surviving COVID-19 and Beyond (ASCAB), alongside Hassan Taiwo Soweto of the Lagos State #EndBadGovernance Movement and Yinka Folarin, National President of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), expressed deep concern over the expansion of insecurity in the country.

The leaders observed that entire communities are currently subjected to continuous trauma from unpunished banditry, terrorism, and mass abductions.

“Innocent Nigerians are being killed, abducted, displaced and traumatized while government responses have remained largely inadequate and ineffective. We express solidarity with families of victims of terrorism, banditry and kidnapping across the country. Lee Kuan Yew was Prime Minister for 31 years (1959 to 1990) of a nation and people with fairly good homogeneity of ideas and vision.

Tinubu, maximum, is an 8 year President of a nation with zero homogeneity of ideas and vision because the people and region of Nigeria are polar opposites who do not deserve to be conjoined as the amalgamation of Nigeria created.

That’s my question. Everybody eye dey red for Nigeria now. To fill up tank for Camry na like 90k now. Minimum wage is 70k. Food is very expensive. Road sef police dey try collect money. Road safety the same thing. Road sef no dey too good to drive the car. Insecurity yapa. Wetin Dey work? Say fuel queue no dey make we celebrate am as progress? Light no too dey. So basically food, road, security is very poor in Nigeria at the moment.
