European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Manchester City 5-2 CSKA Moscow: Negredo Hits Hat-trick As City Progress by sweetiePe(f): 11:44pm On Nov 05, 2013
Argentina striker Sergio Aguero scored twice in the first half to become City’s all-time leading scorer in European football and put them on course to qualify from Group D.

Aguero took his tally to nine goals in his last six games in the process and he then set up Negredo for a third goal before Seydou Doumbia pulled one back just before the break.

Negredo added a fourth goal early in the second half before Doumbia added his second of the night from the penalty spot.

Negredo then completed his hat-trick in stoppage time as City qualified for the knockout stages, courtesy of their head-to-head record against the Russians.

City thrashed Norwich 7-0 in the Premier League on Saturday, so it was no surprise that Manuel Pellegrini named an unchanged side – the first time he has done so as City boss - with Costel Pantilimon again preferred to under-fire England goalkeeper Joe Hart.

CSKA headed into the match having won their last three domestic games following their defeat to City last month and they were also unchanged.

The pre-match talk was dominated by the alleged racial abuse suffered by City midfielder Yaya Toure in the first meeting between the sides last month that resulted in Uefa deciding to close part of CSKA's Arena Khimki for their clash with Bayern Munich.

Jokes Etc / Akpors And Musa by sweetiePe(f): 2:16am On Nov 04, 2013
Akpos and Musa were caught in a Northern African country, sharing a smuggled barrel of beer. They were arrested and taken to the Sheik's palace for questioning and judgment.

Akpos lied that Musa smuggled and forced him to drinkthe beer! Both were initially given a death sentence but, as it was a national holiday, the Sheik decided they should be released after some lashes of the whip. As they were preparing for their punishment, the Sheiksaid, "It's my first wife's birthday today and she asked me to allow each of you 2 wishes before your whipping, but you cannot wish not to be whipped!"

Akpos thought for a second then said: "Please tie two pillows to my back before whipping." And my second wish is that you flog me only 20 strokes of the whip. He was whipped, and luckily for him, the pillows helped to make the pain of the whip lesser.

Musa saw this; thought for a second, then said: "Thank you, most royal and merciful highness for the wishes. My first wish is to receive 100 lashes with the strongest, toughest whip available.",

Akpos laughed and thought Musa was a fool...The Sheik replied with apuzzled look on his face," and your second wish?"

Musa replied "Tie Akpos to my back!"

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Real Madrid 'down' Despite Rayo Victory, Admits Pepe by sweetiePe(f): 11:51pm On Nov 03, 2013

Los Blancos came close to surrendering a three-goal lead on Saturday and the Portugal international has warned his side not to let their intensity drop in future matches

Pepe has admitted that all of Real Madrid's players were feeling "down" after their defensive deficiencies were again exposed in Saturday night's victory over Rayo Vallecano.

Los Blancos raced into a three-goal lead at Vallecas, with Cristiano Ronaldo striking either side of a Karim Benzema header, but they were left hanging on at the end after conceding two penalties in as many minutes in the second half, both of which were converted by Jonathan Viera.

Given Madrid shipped three goals in midweek against Sevilla and have conceded more than any other side in La Liga's top half, Pepe freely admits that Madrid's vulnerability at the back has become a serious cause for concern among the players.

"We are all down about it," the 30-year-old centre-half told his club's official website.

"In the second half, we didn't have the right intensity but the most important thing is to recognise it, and that it has happened in the last two matches and cannot happen again.

"But I think that we were very good in the first half. The team worked hard, with a lot of intensity, we had control and we moved well.

"The coach told us at half-time that we had to keep going because Rayo Vallecano are a mentally strong team.

"But they came out very strongly after the break at home in front of their fans and picked up the pace, which we struggled more against.

"The most important thing, though, is that we took the three points at a difficult ground to win at."

Pepe also confessed that Madrid's players might have had one eye on Tuesday night's Champions League showdown with Juventus in Turin having surged into a three-goal lead against their neighbours shortly after the break.

"We made mistakes in the second half," the Portugal international continued. "We should have had the match under control and maybe even started to think about Juventus.

"I think we're doing well, though. We scored three goals at a difficult ground to come to.

"We got an important win before a tough match. Real Madrid go out to win wherever we play and that is what we'll keep doing."

Jokes Etc / Akpors Finding Jesus by sweetiePe(f): 11:26pm On Nov 03, 2013
A Sunday school teacher is concerned that his students might be a little confused about Jesus, so he asks his class, "Where is Jesus today?"

Ochendo raises his hand and says, "He's in Heaven."

Mary answers, "He's in my heart."

Akpors waves his hand furiously and blurts out, "He's in our bathroom!"

The surprised teacher asks Akpors how he knows this.

"Well," Akpors says, "every morning, my father gets up, bangs on the bathroom door and yells 'Jesus Christ, are you still in there?!'"

BELLBOY
Once there was a church that had a bell that no one could ring. One day, a boy came and asked the priest if he could try. So the boy went up into the tower and ran straight into the bell, face-first. The bell tolled loud and clear. The shocked priest gave him the job. But one Sunday, he ran straight toward the bell with his face and missed and fell off the tower and died.
"Congregation," the priest said before the assembled masses. "Does anybody know this boy's name? Because I don't know him, but his face rings a bell."

Sports / Liverpool Laughed At Arsenal’s Bid For Suarez, Says Rodgers by sweetiePe(f): 9:05am On Nov 02, 2013

The 40-year-old says the offer of £40m plus £1 for the Uruguay international was "derisory" and admits he was forced to be tough on the striker following his comments in the summer

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers claims he laughed at Arsenal’s bid of £40 million plus £1 for Luis Suarez.

Arsene Wenger’s side had prioritised the signing of the Uruguay international during the summer transfer window and believed they had triggered a release clause in the striker’s contract when they submitted an offer in excess of £40m.

Rodgers insists Arsenal stood no chance of prising the 26-year-old away from Anfield and labelled the club’s bid as “derogatory”.

“To be honest, we laughed. We were away at the time on the pre-season tour when I saw the bid in writing,” Rodgers told reporters.

“I think Arsenal were ill-advised on that, to say the least.

"Arsenal as a football club always had great integrity historically and so, when that bid came through, I can only say it was one of the worst pieces of information they ever received.

"It was never going to succeed. At the time we certainly saw the bid as derogatory. The two clubs have historically had class, it has been the hallmark of both, but whether it was £40m and one pound or £40m and one penny, our fight was always to keep him here because he is a top player."

Suarez was ordered to train alone in August after the striker claimed the club had broke their promise of allowing him a move away from Anfield if Champions League football was not secured.

"I'm sure all the players are looking to the manager in a situation like that to see what happens," said Rodgers.

"It cannot fester and be allowed to become a cancer within the group.

"No matter how difficult the situation was, we were leading up to our first game of the season having had a brilliant pre-season and nothing could be allowed to stand in the way of our preparation for that.

“My job is to protect the club and it was important during that time that the power of the club was seen."

Fulham - Manchester United Preview: Champions eye back-to-back wins for the first time this season

Manchester United travel to Craven Cottage on Saturday looking for their sixth straight Premier League win over Fulham.

The reigning champions have not been beaten by the west London outfit since December 2009, when goals from Danny Murphy, Bobby Zamora and Damien Duff gave Fulham a 3-0 home victory.

United sit eight points adrift of Premier League leaders Arsenal following an indifferent start to life under new manager David Moyes, but they go into this clash unbeaten in their last six matches in all competitions.

That run includes last Saturday's top-flight success over Stoke City, when they twice came from behind to win 3-2.

And Moyes takes his side to Craven Cottage with a near fully fit squad to choose from, with Danny Welbeck (knee) his only absentee, and the England international's fellow strikers Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez - who all scored against Fulham last season - all available.

Martin Jol's team, meanwhile, head into the contest on the back of a 2-0 defeat to Southampton in their last Premier League game.

The Dutchman said he was left "puzzled" by their performance at St Mary's, in a game that came just five days after they had crushed Crystal Palace 4-1.

Fulham's attack has been blunt for much of the season, with the win over Palace marking the first time they have scored more than one goal in a Premier League game this term.

But the hosts can have hope of producing an improved attacking display against a United defence that has kept just two clean sheets in nine top-flight outings.

Defender Brede Hangeland could return for Fulham after missing the last two games with a nerve problem in his leg, but forward Hugo Rodallega (groin) is a doubt. Matthew Briggs, meanwhile, is out with a groin problem.

Newcastle United - Chelsea Preview: Mourinho targets first win at St James' Park

Jose Mourinho takes Chelsea to Newcastle United on Saturday looking for his first ever Premier League win at St James' Park.

The Portuguese managed Chelsea in three top flight fixtures at Newcastle during his first spell in charge at Stamford Bridge between 2004 and 2007 but collected just two points from those visits.

However, the former Real Madrid boss is likely to feel upbeat about bucking that trend this time around, as his men head to Tyneside having won their last six games in all competitions.

Chelsea have lost just once in nine Premier League matches this season - their 1-0 reverse at Everton in September - and go into this weekend's encounter joint-second in the table after Fernando Torres' injury time winner gave them a 2-1 win over Manchester City last Sunday.

And with leaders Arsenal facing second-placed Liverpool in Saturday's late kick-off, a fourth consecutive league victory could see Mourinho's side finish the weekend top of the pile.

Torres' strike against City was his third goal in his last two games and the Spain international looks set to lead the line once again for the Londoners.

Mourinho made 10 changes for the midweek Capital One Cup win at Arsenal and has no new injury concerns, with Marco van Ginkel [knee] his only long-term absentee.

In contrast to Chelsea's recent form, Newcastle go into the fixture having won only once in their last five Premier League games.

Alan Pardew's side will be keen to bounce back from the disappointment of losing the Tyne-Wear derby at Sunderland last Sunday but have taken maximum points from just one of their four Premier League home games so far this term.

However, Newcastle ran out the victors in the corresponding fixture last term, as Moussa Sissoko's double inspired them to a 3-2 success over a Chelsea outfit managed by Rafael Benitez.

Pardew will have to overcome something of a defensive injury crisis to repeat that feat, though, as Paul Dummett [hamstring] joins Massadio Haidara [hamstring] and Ryan Taylor [knee] on the sidelines.

Captain Fabricio Coloccini [groin] and Steven Taylor [hamstring] are also doubtful, although Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa returns from suspension after missing the defeat at the Stadium of Light.

Arsenal - Liverpool Preview: Suarez faces summer admirers in top-of-the-table clash

Arsenal and Liverpool will look to underline their Premier League title credentials when they meet at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

Arsene Wenger's side are top of the table having gone eight games unbeaten in the top flight following their opening-day loss to Aston Villa.

But the London outfit have lost their last two home games against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League and Chelsea in the Capital One Cup.

Wenger made a host of changes for Tuesday night's 2-0 home defeat to Chelsea as the Frenchman failed to secure his first win over Jose Mourinho.

However, the Arsenal boss insisted the defeat would have no detrimental effect on their league form as they prepare for a stern test against the Merseysiders.

The likes of Wojciech Szczesny, Per Mertesacker, Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil are set to be restored to the starting line-up, while Mikel Arteta returns following a one-match suspension.

But Wenger still has several injuries to contend with, with midfielder Mathieu Flamini set to miss out once again due to a groin problem he sustained in the victory at Crystal Palace last weekend.

Theo Walcott (abdominal), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (knee), Yaya Sanogo (back), Abou Diaby (knee) and Lukas Podolski (hamstring) all remain sidelined.

For Liverpool, meanwhile, playmaker Philippe Coutinho returns to the squad following a spell on the sidelines with a shoulder injury but boss Brendan Rodgers has a doubt in left-back Jose Enrique (knee).

Liverpool have not lost to Arsenal in the Premier League in their last three visits to the Emirates Stadium and the Anfield club will fancy their chances of avoiding defeat once again as they boast an unbeaten away record in the league this season.

Rodgers' free-scoring side have not lost in their last four games in the top flight, scoring 12 goals in the process.

Luis Suarez has scored six times in four Premier League outings since returning from suspension and the Uruguay striker has also scored in his last two trips to Arsenal, a club who tried to sign him several times in the close-season.

Suarez and Daniel Sturridge have formed a formidable partnership and the England striker is the leading scorer in the Premier League with eight goals.

Jokes Etc / Drunk Husband by sweetiePe(f): 11:48pm On Nov 01, 2013
A wife was in bed with her lover when she heard her husband's key in the door.

"Stay where you are," she said. "He's so drunk he won't even notice you're in bed with me."

Sure enough, the husband lurched into bed none the wiser, but a few minutes later, through a drunken haze, he saw six feet sticking out at the end of the bed.

He turned to his wife: "Hey, there are six feet in this bed. There should only be four. What's going on?"

"Nonsense," said the wife. "You're so drunk you miscounted. Get out of bed and try again. You can see better from over there."

The husband climbed out of bed and counted. "One, two, three, four. You're right, you know."

Sports / Mikel Talks Up Jose Mourinho’s Influence In His Second Coming by sweetiePe(f): 11:01pm On Nov 01, 2013

The Nigerian believes that the Portuguese coach has infused the club with a winning mentality again

Nigeria midfielder Mikel Obi has spoken about the influence of Jose Mourinho in his second stint at Chelsea and what he has added to the team.

“This game is all about winning and the manager that brought this transformation of winning to this club is back now,” Mikel told Chelsea TV before the Capital One Cup win over Arsenal on Tuesday.

"He still has the same idea of how he wants us to approach every game with a win, win mentality.

"I came to this club at 18 and he made me to think win, win, win,” Mikel added.

Mikel also revealed that the players get motivated just seeing Mourinho.

“Whenever you see him, you see motivation. You see him walking around the place…motivation.

“He walks around the place full of energy, full of confidence. And really, he is not doing it for himself but for you to see how he goes about his business and he wants you to emulate that into yourself and start behaving in a similar way.

"This is because confidence can lead you to so many places that you never thought you could go and it is just brilliant to work with him again.

“And now that he is back, we hope that we can continue winning the trophies that we won since he left,” Mikel concluded.

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has revealed that Monday’s international friendly against Jordan was a good test for his boys as they prepare for next year’s Championship of African Nations billed for South Africa.

In an exclusive interview with Goal at the Muritala Muhammed International Airport on arrival from the Middle East, the former national team skipper admitted that he is not worried that they lost to Hossam Hassan’s men but insisted that his target is to ensure Nigeria performs well at CHAN 2014.

“Friendly matches are not all about winning. It’s about assessing the players on how they can perform and also to examine how quick they can adapt to the tactics and system the coach is playing. Besides, the game has nothing to do with our ranking with Fifa,” Keshi told Goal.

“It was a good experience for the boys [not minding] the fact that we had just three days to train and 18 hours journey to contend with which I think is too much for the players who are very young. The boys have learnt a few things from the encounter which I think they will benefit from. ”

The Africa Cup of Nations winning coach hinted on the probable date the home based Eagles will resume camp for their debut appearance in next year’s CHAN.

“Hopefully, we will resume camp sometime in December if all things go on fine. Nigerians should keep praying for us that everything should go on fine,” he concluded.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Mata Ready To Leave Chelsea In January As PSG Prepare £35m Bid by sweetiePe(f): 12:40am On Nov 01, 2013

Chelsea star Juan Mata is ready to leave the club in January as big-spending French side Paris Saint-Germain prepare a bid worth £35 million for the playmaker.

The Spanish star started and scored in Tuesday’s Capital One Cup win against Arsenal but is unhappy under Jose Mourinho having again been left out of the starting line-up for key matches including last Sunday’s home win over Manchester City.

Mata is fearful for his place in the Spain squad for next summer’s World Cup in Brazil - and he is ready to quit Stamford Bridge in the winter as he goes in search of regular first-team football.

Chelsea are willing to listen to offers for the 25-year-old but will refuse to sell him to a Premier League rival, ruling out a transfer to Manchester United or Tottenham, who both tried to sign the former Valencia man over the summer.

Mata is happy in London and has publicly vowed to fight for his place and declared himself "happy" at Stamford Bridge. Behind the scenes, however, he is strongly considering his future, especially with no sign of a new deal to improve on his £70,000-a-week contract which runs until 2016.

“I am happy at Chelsea. I have always felt the support of the fans - in every game, on the street - I have felt the love from them. I try to play for them, score for them and make them happy. We have great support," he told Talksport on Wednesday.

“I want to play as much as I can, but if you want to win titles you need 24-25 players ready to play. Anyone can play any game."

Mata’s father, who also acts as the player’s agent, is understood to have made discrete enquiries to sound out potential interest in his son.

PSG are the leading contenders at this stage, with sources confirming to Goal that the Ligue 1 club tried to sign Mata in the summer and are preparing to return with a bumper bid in the new year.

Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid have both ruled out bids for the midfielder, while Valencia’s precarious financial situation means they are unable to fund a move to re-sign their former star.

Mata has failed to establish himself in Mourinho’s plans this season, often settling for a place on the substitutes’ bench, especially in big games against Manchester United, Spurs and City.

Mourinho has cited Mata’s lack of defensive work as the main reason behind the Spain international’s frequent omission, with Oscar preferred in the No.10 role at Stamford Bridge.

Mata has been Chelsea’s player of the year in the last two seasons, and last term scored 12 goals and provided 12 assists in the Premier League alone.

Sports / Mourinho 'arguably The Best Manager In The World', Says Pardew by sweetiePe(f): 12:14am On Nov 01, 2013

Alan Pardew believes Jose Mourinho is "arguably the best manager in the world", with his Newcastle side set to host Chelsea on Saturday.

The Magpies will be desperate to make amends for their defeat in the Tyne-Wear derby, but face a Blues side enjoying a six-game winning streak.

Victory for Chelsea would see them leapfrog table-topping Arsenal, with the Gunners facing Liverpool later in the day, and Pardew admits he faces a tough test to better this Portuguese counterpart.

"They have a manager who is arguably the best in the world,” he told the Chronicle. "You can see he is at the top of his game.

"Chelsea are difficult to break down and difficult to score against. It gives them a great platform to win games."

Newcastle took Manchester City into extra-time during Wednesday’s Capital One Cup fourth-round defeat, and their manager expects the resolute display to stand them in good stead for the game against Chelsea.

"That performance will trigger results," he insisted. "We look at the last four or five games and we've been pretty good.

"We have our fans backing with us at home and that is important. It is very important that they are behind us. It is important to have that to unsettle a big team."

Mourinho offended Manuel Pellegrini with an over-the-top celebration following Fernando Torres’ last-minute winner against Manchester City last weekend, but Pardew believes such antics should not be taken too seriously.

"He's not jumping in my crowd," he joked. "He's a great personality for the league.

"I don't need to give him any more credit. I just hope to turn them over and make them miserable."

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / PSG Confirm €200 Million Sponsorship by sweetiePe(f): 11:08pm On Oct 30, 2013
Paris Saint-Germain have officially announced their sponsorship deal with the Qatar Tourism Authority which will net the Ligue 1 champions up to 200 million euros a year.

Mooted last season, the agreement was publicly confirmed on Tuesday making PSG the first club to be sponsored by a state.

Income from the deal, which will reportedly be retroactively paid back to 2012, is said to increase incrementally year-on-year through to a reported maximum of 200 million euros come 2016.

"Our association with the Qatar Tourism Authority allows us to give ourselves the means necessary for the development of the club in the direction that we envisage," PSG's CEO Jean-Claude Blanc said.

It clearly benefits the image, as well as the results, of the club. QTA's support enables us to offer our supporters a level of performance in keeping with their expectations and our ambitions."

The sum will significantly help offset PSG's annual budget, which this year totals 430 million euros, though the club will also have to provide details of the agreement to UEFA before European football's governing body takes it into account with regard to the club's obligations to meet Financial Fair Play regulations.

As part of the agreement, Laurent Blanc's squad will be able to use Qatar's high-performance ASPIRE centre for this year's winter training camp, the third successive year the French club will have travelled to the Gulf state during their winter break, to prepare for a high-profile friendly with Real Madrid in Doha on Jan. 2, which will launch the second half of their season.

MANCHESTER UNITED 4 - 0 NORWICH CITY

Chicharito netted twice as Manchester United cruised into the Capital One Cup quarter-finals with a comfortable victory over Norwich.

After opening the scoring from the spot after 20 minutes following a Leroy Fer foul on Adnan Januzaj, the 25-year-old reacted quickly to a Mark Bunn parry to double the hosts’ advantage with a header early in the second half.

Phil Jones made sure of the victory with a late volley, before Fabio prodded home a fourth in stoppage time in a game marred by a serious-looking head injury to Norwich's Robert Snodgrass.

David Moyes made wholesale changes from the United side that came from behind twice to beat Stoke City 3-2 on Saturday, with Phil Jones and Tom Cleverley the only survivors.

Wilfried Zaha was given a first start since August’s Community Shield win over Wigan Athletic, while Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand were also among those to come in.

Norwich were similarly unrecognisable from the weekend, with Fer, Bassong and Snodgrass the only players to line up at Old Trafford who started Saturday’s goalless draw with Cardiff.

Nathan Redmond was the first to get a sight of goal for the visitors, creating the angle for himself at the edge of the penalty area before drilling wide of the left-hand post after 10 minutes.

At the other end, Chicharito twice went close to giving United the lead in quick succession, but it wasn’t long before the Mexican broke the deadlock.

Arsenal 0-2 Chelsea: Mata magic helps Blues overcome below-par Gunners

Jose Mourinho maintained his hoodoo over Arsene Wenger as Chelsea beat Arsenal 2-0 to reach the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup.

Arsenal boss Wenger had failed to secure a victory over a Chelsea side managed by Mourinho in eight attempts before Tuesday night's clash between the top two in the Premier League at the Emirates Stadium.

And Mourinho, taking charge of his 200th game as Chelsea manager, stretched that run to nine as Cesar Azpilicueta scored his first goal for the club following a mistake from Carl Jenkinson and Juan Mata opened his account for the season to give the visitors another London derby victory.

In-form Chelsea have now won their last five games in all competitions and they were good value for their victory against a more inexperienced Arsenal side.

Mourinho vowed to make wholesale changes with the game just two days after Chelsea's Premier League win over Manchester City and he was true to his word, as only Gary Cahill kept his place in the starting line-up.

Wenger also made full use of his Arsenal squad as Laurent Koscielny, Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla were the only players who started the 2-0 victory against Crystal Palace on Saturday to stay in the side.

Such is the strength of Chelsea's squad that they still had plenty of experience in their side and they looked more threatening in the opening stages before they were gifted the lead after 24 minutes.

Jenkinson was the culprit as he hesitated and let the ball bounce before attempting to head back to Lukasz Fabianski, only for marauding full-back Azpilicueta to nip in and poke the ball beyond the Polish goalkeeper with a finish a striker would have been proud of.

The defender almost undid his good work four minutes later when his poor pass was cut out by fellow Spaniard Nacho Monreal, who let fly with a left-foot drive that flashed just past the far post.

Samuel Eto'o had the first sight of goal in the second half but the Chelsea striker fired his shot from 20 yards out wide.

Arsenal responded as Ramsey's shot from inside the penalty area deflected wide of the far post and the Wales midfielder tried his luck from just outside the penalty area 61 minutes in, but was narrowly off target.

Wenger brought on playmaker Mesut Ozil with just over 25 minutes remaining, but Arsenal were left with a mountain to climb just a couple of minutes later when the ball fell for Mata just outside the penalty area and the Spaniard beat Fabianski with a clinical right-foot finish to notch his first goal of the season.

Koscielny had to clear off the line to deny Ramires a third goal and the Brazil midfielder had a shot that landed on top of the net as 9,000 Chelsea fans behind the goal celebrated reaching the last eight.
