European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Tottenham Must Play With Freedom Against Manchester United - Eriksen by sweetiePe(f): 12:48am On Dec 31, 2013

The Dane has encouraged his team-mates to approach their upcoming clash at Old Trafford without fear and admits he is enjoying the more positive style of play under Tim Sherwood
Tottenham must play without fear if they are to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford on New Year's Day, according to playmaker Christian Eriksen.

Spurs struggled for goals under Andre Villas-Boas this season, scoring just 15 times in 16 league games under the Portuguese, but have netted seven in three matches since Tim Sherwood took the reins.

With a visit to the site of last season's famous 3-2 victory - their first over United since 1989 - looming on Wednesday, Eriksen insists they have no reason not to maintain their positive mindset.

"I'd like us to go there and play like we did [against Stoke]," he told reporters. "We'll still get the space and just need to take our chances.

"United are a better team than Stoke and we have respect for them, but we have to be on our toes and go there and play a good game."

Sports / Nigeria Will Break Argentine Jinx In Brazil, Says Peter Rufai by sweetiePe(f): 3:34pm On Dec 15, 2013

The former Super Eagles goalkeeper believes Alejandro Sabella’s side will bow to his countrymen when both sides clash at the World Cup
Former Nigeria goalkeeper Peter Rufai is sounding confident that Argentina will have no place to hide when they face the Super Eagles in their last group game of the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil.
The former Deportivo La Coruna player who was in goal for the Nigerian team that lost 2-1 to the Albiceleste at the USA '94 World Cup also believes that the big names in the Argentine squad don’t scare Stephen Keshi's players.

Nigeria have since lost thrice to the South Americans at the World Cup.

“This time that jinx is going to be broken. This is the inspiration or motivation for the Super Eagles to crush them this time around,” Rufai told CompleteSports.

“It has reached a point Nigeria can look Argentina in the face and tell them enough is enough. You remember that Stephen Keshi was captain of the Super Eagles in 1994 when Argentina defeated?

“Now Keshi is the coach of Eagles and he must have learned as a player how and why we lost in 1994 so he will put the experiences together. Mikel will look at Lionel Messi in the face and tell him that, man this is our own time. So I believe that jinx is gonna end in Brazil.”

He predicted at least a quarter final finish for the team.

“First I see them going beyond the group stage. Then I foresee them reaching the quarter finals and if they keep their heads low and cool they can get to the semi final as well and when they get to the semi final, who knows, anything can happen, you never can tell.

Sports / Nigeria Can Reach Semi Final - Kanu by sweetiePe(f): 12:31pm On Dec 12, 2013

The former Super Eagles captain says that the African champions and Argentina are the two teams that will make it out of their group at the World Cup
Former Nigeria captain Nwankwo Kanu has said that the Super Eagles will make it out of their Group F ahead of Iran and Bosnia at next year’s World Cup.

The Arsenal legend also tipped twice winners Argentina to reach the knock out stages.

Kanu who played at three World Cups with Nigeria – 1998, 2002 and 2010 – feels that the Super Eagles are now a formidable force and will do well in Brazil.

“With sustained preparation, why not? The first match is very important and, of course, yes, they will qualify ahead of Bosnia and Iran,” Kanu told CompleteSports.

Asked how far he thinks the reigning African champions will go in their campaign, the 1996 Olympic football gold medal winner said: “Quarter final or semi final, why not, we can get there if we work hard like I said before and believe in ourselves.

“Yes if we believe. At the same time we've to work hard by preparing very well. This is World Cup, not a friendly game.

“We don't have to say we still have time to start preparation. If we put our acts together, prepare well and have that self belief, why not, semi final is not an impossible target.”

Nigeria begin their campaign against Iran on June 16 in Curitiba before taking on debutants Bosnia-Herzegovina on June 21 in Cuiaba and Argentina on June 25 in Porto Alegre.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Neymar: I've Made My Mark by sweetiePe(f): 10:36am On Dec 12, 2013

The Brazilian was thrilled on a personal level and for his team after they returned to winning ways with an emphatic victory in Europe on Wednesday night

Neymar said he had made his mark on Europe after his hat-trick helped Barcelona to a 6-1win over Celtic.

The Brazil international scored three times in 13 minutes as the Catalans ended the group stage with a resounding victory, with Gerard Pique, Pedro and Cristian Tello scoring the other goals.

The Blaugrana had lost two of their last three games going into the clash at Camp Nou and Neymar was pleased that Gerardo Martino's men could return to winning ways.

"I'm very happy - not only for the three goals in the Champions League, but also for the team's win," he is quoted by Marca as saying.

"I did not feel the pressure, but I wanted to make my mark. The important thing is we were able to overcome those two losses and now we must change our mindset to think about La Liga. "

When asked if he prefers to play in the middle rather than the wing, he refused to commit to either, saying he just wants game time for the club.

"I prefer to play, I do not care to go for middle or from the side," Neymar added.

Barca's next game will be away to Villarreal on Saturday having topped Champions League Group H with the win.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Rooney Rejects New Manchester United Contract Talks by sweetiePe(f): 3:56pm On Dec 11, 2013

The 28-year-old continues to evade the Red Devils' attempts to discuss a new deal as he eyes a move away from Old Trafford, with his current terms due to expire in 2015

Wayne Rooney has rejected Manchester United's latest attempts to open talks over a new contract.

The striker and his representatives are refusing to even discuss an extension, with the England international's existing terms set to expire at the end of next season.

Goal revealed in October that Rooney had rejected United's first approach to discuss a contract renewal as he continues to explore the possibility of leaving the club.

The 28-year-old and his camp have declined further offers from the club in recent weeks to start negotiating, with United willl to give him a four-year deal.

Rooney has begun the season in outstanding form, scoring eight goals in 13 Premier League appearances for the side during a difficult start for new boss David Moyes that has left the reigning champions ninth in the table.

Publicly, Moyes insisted last week that a new deal for the England international "will be done in good course" but Rooney is understood to remain keen to seek a fresh challenge at another Champions League club.

"Wayne is resisting any and all attempts from the club to talk about his contract situation," a source told Goal.

"He knows, more than anything, that with his contract running down and in the form that he is in, he holds all the aces."

Rooney and his agent, Paul Stretford, are well aware that they are in a strong position to engineer a transfer in the summer, when the player will have just one year remaining on his contract.

Indeed, sources close to the situation have told Goal that Rooney is increasingly aware of the renewed interest in him from leading clubs both abroad and domestically.

Chelsea made two bids for Rooney in the summer after being told that the former Everton man wanted to move to Stamford Bridge and there was also strong interest from Arsenal up until the final week of the window.

United refused to sell Rooney to Chelsea, a club whom they regard as a principal title rival but the league champions could be backed into a corner if the forward pushes hard for a transfer either in January or next summer while refusing to extend his weekly salaray of £250,000 (€300,000).

Bayern Munich - Manchester City Preview

Manchester City are set to rotate for their trip to Bayern Munich with both sides' progression into the Champions League knockout stage already secured.

The top two in Group D meet at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday, having already reached the last 16, and City manager Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed that he will look to utilise some of his squad players with Saturday's clash with Premier League leaders Arsenal in mind.

"Joe Hart will play against Bayern Munich, sure," the Chilean confirmed after his side's 1-1 draw with Southampton on Saturday.

"Of course, if you ask me at this moment, the game against Arsenal next weekend is more important than the game against Bayern Munich.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Neymar Should Score More Goals by sweetiePe(f): 5:52pm On Dec 10, 2013
The Barcelona boss has challenged the Brazilian to improve his strike rate in the absence of Lionel Messi but has is delighted with his all-round contribution
Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino has challenged Neymar to improve his goal tally in the continued absence of Lionel Messi.

The Brazilian has managed just five goals in 20 competitive appearances for the Blaugrana since his €57 million move from Santos during the summer, though he has notched nine assists.

With Messi still sidelined with a hamstring problem, Martino has called on Neymar to step up his strike rate despite his all-round contribution to the side - although he acknowledges the Brazilian is unlikely to match his team-mate's scoring record.

"He should score more goals than he has so far," the Barca boss said.

"We don't analyse any player simply by the goals he scores and lays on - it is a question of all facets of a player's game.

"But at the moment the only question about Neymar is his finishing.

"Neymar is a player who fills all facets of play. He's not a goalscorer with the characteristics of Leo, but he'll give us the same sort of goal return as Pedro, Alexis [Sanchez] and Cesc [Fabregas]."

Barcelona take on Celtic on Tuesday knowing a positive result will see them top the group and Martino has urged his side to fight for the win following a disappointing recent run of results.

"We have to finish first in the group. We must get away from the idea of a comfortable game - every game is uncomfortable, and has consequences," said the Argentine.

"What we need is to be precise, we imagine we'll play a game 30 metres from goal and we'll have to be precise to avoid the counterattacks which Celtic will surely use."

Manchester United 0-1 Everton: Oviedo late show ruins reunion for Moyes

Everton stunned Manchester United and former manager David Moyes with a late 1-0 win at Old Trafford.

Bryan Oviedo silenced the Theatre of Dreams on the 85th minute to secure three points for the Toffees and consign the champions to their first defeat since September.

Moyes spent 11 years as manager at Goodison Park before replacing Sir Alex Ferguson at United, but he was given a hostile reception from Everton fans and they rejoiced at full-time after an impressive 1-0 victory against their former boss.

Wayne Rooney, Patrice Evra and Danny Welbeck were all denied by the woodwork, but Everton were impressive and had chances of their own before Costa Rican Oviedo struck four minutes from time.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Wenger Hits Out At Ballon D'or Obsession by sweetiePe(f): 1:32am On Dec 04, 2013

The Arsenal boss believes the prize goes against the essence of the sport and tempts players into playing for themselves rather than the team

Arsene Wenger has hit out at football's obsession with the Ballon d'Or and says he does not want anyone to win the game's most prestigious individual prize.

Debate continues to rage over which player will be handed the award in January, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Franck Ribery the favourites to wrestle the crown from four-time winner and current holder Lionel Messi.

But Arsenal boss Wenger has revealed he is completely against the idea of individual prizes in a team sport and says he will fight bring to an end the trophy's existence.

The 64-year-old told Telefoot: "Who do I want to win this year? I do not want anyone at all. I am against individual awards. This is an endorsement of an individual which goes against the essence of our sport.

"I fight like a mad man against the award, which hurts football. Unconsciously, the player is prompted to favour individual performance over that of the team."

Fifa recently extended the voting deadline for the prize from November 15 to November 29, with the winner of the 2013 Ballon d'Or set to be announced at a ceremony in Zurich on January 13.

Yaya Toure is BBC African Footballer of the Year

The Ivorian midfielder has been announced as the best African footballer in 2013 according to the English media outfit

Yaya Toure of Ivory Coast and Manchester City has won the 2013 BBC African Footballer of the Year award.

The 30-year-old midfield maestro picked the award ahead of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Victor Moses, John Mikel Obi and Jonathan Pitroipa.

“I think I've been nominated for five years in a row and finally winning the award is amazing. I’'m very happy as it is the fans who have given it to me - so I'm very appreciative,” Yaya told BBC.

"It's a fantastic achievement because I don't think there has ever been as many quality African players in top level international football as there are now: Aubameyang, Pitroipa, Mikel, Moses, Salomon Kalou, Gervinho, we have fantastic players.

"I also think African football is improving and that means a lot to us. And as an African, I'm very happy.

"Thank you to all the fans around the world who continue to support me. It shows how much fans love you and appreciate your job as well.

"It's something special because it's not the vote of the manager or the club or the captain of the national team, it's just the fans.

"When you have a lot of fans behind you, it's always amazing. And I'm very happy as it is the fans who have given it to me - so I'm very appreciative,”

The shortlist for the award was drawn up by 44 football experts across Africa, who based their choices on players' skill, technical ability, teamwork, consistency and fair play. Zambia’s Christopher Katongo won the award in 2012.

Sports / Mourinho: Ask Lukaku Why He Went To Everton by sweetiePe(f): 3:10pm On Dec 01, 2013

The Belgian has suggested he was forced out of Stamford Bridge on deadline day, but the Chelsea boss has challenged him to reveal the real reasons behind the move

Jose Mourinho has called on Romelu Lukaku to come clean about his reasons for leaving Chelsea on loan in the summer.

The Belgian forward joined Everton for the 2013-14 campaign on transfer deadline day, but has reportedly made suggestions he was forced to leave Stamford Bridge.

But manager Mourinho has gone public with his denial of those accusations, asking Lukaku to reveal the true reasons behind his departure.

"Romelu likes to speak," he told reporters. "He's a young boy who likes to speak.

''But the only thing he didn't say is why he went to Everton on loan. That's the only thing he never says.

''And my last contact with him was to tell him exactly that. I said 'Why do you never say why you are not here?'

''So it's something he should talk about because he likes to speak. It's something he should say, the reason why he's not with Chelsea and is in Everton.''

Chelsea host Southampton on Sunday, while Everton entertain Stoke City on Saturday.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Gareth Bale Hat Trick Leads Real by sweetiePe(f): 2:52pm On Dec 01, 2013
Gareth Bale scored three goals and set up a fourth to make sure Real Madrid didn't miss injured star Cristiano Ronaldo as they cruised to a 4-0 win over Valladolid in La Liga on Saturday
With Ronaldo out nursing a hamstring for a second straight game, Bale took up the scoring duties in the 32nd minute. Bale found himself in perfect position to nod in a rebound of Angel Di Maria's curling effort that goalie Diego Marino parried directly to the Wales winger.

He then found Karim Benzema with a pinpoint cross to make it 2-0 four minutes later.

Bale was again aided by a poor clearance for Madrid's third in the in the 64th minute. This time it was defender Jesus Rueda, who knocked Marcelo's cross back for Bale to fire home.

But Bale wasn't finished and he started and finished off a late counterattack by charging forward to tap in Marcelo's low cross.

Bale has seven goals in league play, leaving him third for Madrid behind Benzema's eight and Ronaldo's 17, which lead the league.

Madrid's fourth league win in a row following their loss at Barcelona lifted them three points from the defending champions and Atletico Madrid

Atletico won 2-0 at Elche on goals by Diego Costa and Koke.

With Elche hanging tough, Atletico coach Diego Simeone sent on Raul Garcia and Adrian Lopez and the changes paid off to earn Atletico's 17th win in all competitions to go with four draws and just one loss.

Atletico broke through seconds after Garcia replaced David Villa. Koke pounced on a rebound from Garcia's shot that Manuel Herrera saved but failed to clear, leaving the Elche goalkeeper strewn on the turf with defender Alberto Botia and Diego Costa after they collided.

Diego Costa secured the three points in the 74th by scoring from Lopez's perfectly placed chipped pass.

Celta Vigo came back to beat Almeria 3-1 for their first home victory at Balaidos Stadium in eight attempts this season under first-year manager Luis Enrique.

After Suso opened for Almeria, Fabian Orellano scored one goal and set up another to lead the fightback.
