Ethiopia 1-2 Nigeria: Emenike's brace shoots the Eagles closer to Brazil

The Super Eagles went to Addis Ababa and conquered both the altitude and the Walya Antelopes in the first leg of their World Cup qualifier on Sunday

Nigeria conquered the high altitude of Ethiopia with a 2-1 victory as they signified a firm interest in making a fifth appearance in the World Cup in Brazil.

Emmanuel Emenike was the hero for the Super Eagles as he scored the equalizer and the winner in the 89th minute. Ethiopia had gone ahead in the 56th minute when Vincent Enyeama mis-judged a cross from Assefa and the referee, Aliou Neant from Cameroon, ruled that the ball had crossed the line.

The first half started with the Ethiopians on the front foot with their fans howling and making a terrific atmosphere. And it took just two minutes for the Eagles to concede a corner kick that was quickly followed by another.
Emmanuel Emenike then drove the Eagles forward and won a corner kick in the fourth minute. The first shot in anger came in the eighth minute but No. 20 shot wide.

After persistent fouling on Victor Moses, Tesfaye was shown the first yellow card of the match in the 12th minute.

Nnamdi Oduamadi then missed the first gilt-edged chance when he mis-kicked Emenike’s cross. Ethiopia then went forward and Saladin Said thought he had scored but Godfrey Oboabona made a fantastic clearance to keep the match at 0-0.

Ahmed Musa had a half volley smothered by Butako and then coach Ternat Bishaw called for a water break, a call that was really confusing to the visitors.

Adane Girma should have scored for the Antelopes in the 38th minute when a loose ball from Moses fell to him but after dribbling three Nigeria defenders, he shot wildly over.

Girma had another chance in the second minute of added time but Enyeama made a great save.

The second half was not as frantic as it was in the first half and the first chance came for the Antelopes in the 55th minute but Enyeama read the bounce very well and cleared the danger.

The Ethiopians then scored a goal that could best be described as a fluke because Enyeama mis-judged a cross by Assefa and the referee ruled that the ball had crossed the line before the Nigerian goalkeeper claimed it.

Stephen Keshi made changes bringing in Nosa Igiebor for Nnamdi Oduamadi in the 63rd minute as the goal woke up the Nigerians who then went in search of the equalizer.

The Super Eagles should have equalised in the 62nd minute when Moses went one-on-one with the goalkeeper but goalkeeper Tassew did well to save at the feet of the Liverpool man. Minutes later, Keshi withdrew Moses, who had an average game and brought on Brown Ideye.

Their equalising goal came in the 67th minute when Emenike shot a thunderbolt from outside the box. Afterwards, the Nigerians went on the offensive.

Musa hit the post in the 77th minute off a terrific pass by Mikel. Nigeria went ahead for the first time in the encounter in the 88th minute when Emenike was dragged down in the box for a clear penalty.

The Fenerbahce player dusted himself off and cooly dispatched the penalty to give the Super Eagles the victory and one leg in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The second leg will be held in Calabar on November 16 at the U.J Esuene Stadium but the Nigerians will believe that they hold all the aces.

The Nigerian national team arrived in Addis Ababa on Saturday morning for Sunday’s 2014 World Cup qualifying first leg play-off match against Ethiopia.

Their chartered Ethiopian Airlines plane touched down at the Bole International Airport at 8:50am with a delegation which included government officials, members of the Nigeria Football Federation, Nigeria Supporters Club and press.

Players of the national team were warmly received by locals at the airport as they made their way to the team bus and onwards to their hotel.

There were chants of ‘Moses’ and ‘Mikel’ from among the pack of locals that welcomed them at the airport as they sought for photographs with the Nigerian stars.

The Nigerian supporters’ delegation also filled the air with jolly good Nigerian music as they announced their arrival for the crucial World Cup qualifier.

The 100 supporters from Nigeria will do battle against a partisan home crowd expected to be 40,000 in the National Stadium.

Three key battles that could define the Ethiopia versus Nigeria clash in Addis Ababa

OGENYI ONAZI V MENYAHEL TESHOME

The real orchestrator for the Antelopes is the 27-year-old Saint George midfielder, Menyahel Teshome. Teshome is very nimble and also very mobile and scored the goal that qualified the Antelopes for this match.

Onazi on the other hand is the engine of the Eagles and is tireless whether marking opponents or trying to open tight defences from deep and he also scores the odd goal. The more energetic of these two players will win the midfield battle.

MIKEL OBI v ADANE GIRMA

Adane Girma (pictured above) is another product of Saint George and likes to float between the lines of midfield and attack where Mikel Obi also likes to operate. But it being an away match, Mikel has to restrict his attacking tendencies as he does at Chelsea to help Onazi win the midfield battle.

Also Mikel is needed to slow the game down to negate the effects of altitude on the team. Girma will be hoping to draw the Eagles talisman away from that area so as to help create one-on-one situations between Onazi and Teshome.

GODFREY OBOABONA v SALADIN SAID

The Wad Degla striker likes to make his runs from the Left wing thereby catching the last central defender on the turn that is Oboabona, who has not played so much football since he joined Turkish side Caykur Rizespor.

Oboabona must be very sharp and wary of these runs or make sure that the right back should always be on the lookout for these runs. Saladin showed a bit of what he can do at the last Nations Cup where naivety proved the undoing of him and the whole team.

Now more experienced, he will be a more consistent performer and will raise the stakes in this first leg.

Nwanu slays NFF on travel arrangement but urges Super Eagles to beat Walyas Antelopes

Former Super Eagles' defender, Chidi Nwanu has faulted the decision of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to airlift the country's senior national team to Ethiopia 24 hours ahead of the first leg of the 2014 FIFA World Cup play-off against the Walya Antelopes scheduled for Sunday at 2pm (Nigeria Time).

The Eagles will battle the high altitude and a bumpy pitch in Addis Ababa and to reduce the effect on the team, the NFF stated that the players would hit the East African nation on Saturday a day before the all-important qualifier billed for Sunday.

The Football House had arranged for the Eagles to train at Abuja for about four days before the team would storm Ethiopia for the game.

In a chat with Goal from Belgium, Nwanu expressed his reservations about the travel plans of the NFF for the Eagles and said that the team might struggle to cope with the weather condition in Addis Ababa.

He stressed that the best option would have been for the NFF to arrange for the players to get to the match venue at least a few days before the clash so as to properly acclimatise.

"I still don't understand the reason why the team will be leaving for Ethiopia 24 hours to a crucial match such as this World Cup qualifier.

“The best option for the Eagles would have been to arrive Addis Ababa few days to the game so as to get used to the weather and other unpalatable conditions.

"It is not a good decision by the NFF to have the players in Ethiopia on Saturday when the game is fixed for Sunday.

“When will they have a feel of the turf and what impact will the weather have on them,” the defender who graced the 1994 World Cup asked.

“Shabby programme and lack of adequate preparation will be of no good to Nigeria. We need to do more to get the desired result. When there is no labour, there is no sweet,” he added.

The former Beveren and Anderlecht's defender however affirmed that the Eagles should be able to hold their own and get a decent result in Addis Ababa before finishing up the job at home during the second leg.

He encouraged the Eagles' players to be focused and play the game of their lives in Addis Ababa so as to brighten their World Cup qualification chances.

"I however know that Nigeria's players always rise up to the occasion when least expected. I am tipping the Eagles to get a good result in Addis Ababa and then wrap up the proceedings when the Ethiopians visit us in Nigeria.

"I want to tell them to stick together and they should close their eyes and play their best. They should let the ball do the running and ensure that they conserve their energies for the latter part of the encounter," Nwanu concluded.

Nwanu, who hails from Aboh Mbaise, Imo State retired from football in 1998 with RKC Waalwijk in Holland and he won 20 caps for Nigeria. He was part of the squads for the 1994 FIFA World Cup and the 1988 Summer Olympics and is now a pastor in Antwerp, Belgium.

Akpors stayed close to the
cemetery so used that to outwit
okada riders and taxi drivers. He
would simply alight at the
cemetery junction, fill his nostrils
with cotton and speak nasally.
This scared every driver and
rider and wouldn't wait to ask
him for money but run for dear
life. Akpors did this for years
and successfully outwitted
every driver thinking he was a
ghost.
One cool evening, Akpors
boarded this okada and
as usual alighted at the cemetery
junction.
"MONEY" the angry
looking okada man asked.
Akpors was at his best, stufferd
cotton wool into his nostrils and
spoke nasally; "I dont have
money!" The okada man
wouldn't take any of that, and
kept insisting.
This frustrated Akpors, who later
said; "Ok, ok, follow me into the
cemetery. .. to my room and I
will pay you"
The okada man agreed and
followed him till they got to one
grave. Akpors in his attempts to
frighten the okada man knocked
on the grave and
screamed;"Uche!, Uche!, Uche!,
abeg give me N800 make I pay
this stubborn okada man" All of
a sudden, a very big hand
holding N1000 appeared
through the grave accompanied
with a voice saying; "Take, this
one na ma last card. . ."
Two pieces of shoes (both right
leg) believed to belong to Akpors
and the Okada man were found
on the scene as at the time
gathering this report.
We learnt Akpors ran home with
fresh poo all over his pants....
he's yet to recover form the
shock.
