SportsFIFA World Cup Brazil 2014 Draw by sweetiePe(op): 9:48am On Nov 21, 2013
The draw for the FIFA World Cup 2014 will take place on 6 December 2013 at 4pm.

The seeded teams will be in Pot 1. Pots 2, 3, 4 will be determined by ”geographic and sports criteria.” – The principle of geographical separation maintains that teams from the same confederation will not be allowed to occupy the same group. Exception: A maximum of two European Teams may occupy the same group.

Pot 1 – The host and top 7 (October 2013 FIFA ranking)
Pot 2 – Asia, North America and Oceania
Pot 3 – Africa and South America
Pot 4 – Europe

Using the draw procedure for FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010, the pots for the World Cup Brazil 2014 Draw on 6 December 2013 would look like this ( + October FIFA Ranking):
Pot 1 (Seeded Teams):
1. Brazil (11)
2. Spain (1)
3. Germany (2)
4. Argentina (3)
5. Colombia (4)
6. Belgium (5)
7. Uruguay (6)
8. Switzerland (7)
Pot 2 (Asia and North America):
1. Japan (44) – AFC
2. Iran (49) – AFC
3. Korea Republic (56) – AFC
4. Australia (57) – AFC
5. U.S.A (13) – CONCACAF
6. Mexico (24) – CONCACAF
7. Costa Rica (31) – CONCACAF
8. Honduras (34) – CONCACAF
Pot 3 (Africa, South America + 1 UEFA Team):
1. Cote d’ Ivoire (17) – CAF
2. Ghana (23) – CAF
3. Algeria (32) – CAF
4. Nigeria (33) – CAF
5. Cameroon (59) – CAF
6. Chile (12) – CONMEBOL
7. Ecuador (22) – CONMEBOL
8. France (20) – UEFA
Pot 4 (Europe):
1. Netherlands (8 ) – UEFA
2. Italy (8 ) – UEFA
3. England (10) – UEFA
4. Portugal (14) – UEFA
5. Greece (15) – UEFA
6. Bosnia-Herzegovina (16) – UEFA
7. Croatia (18) – UEFA
8. Russia (19) – UEFA
All teams in Pot 1 (seeded teams) will be placed in Position “1″ in each group. Brazil (hosts) will be the only team whose Group is predetermined – Group A. The remaining seeded teams will be drawn randomly into Groups B-H.
Groups:
Group A: Brazil, Pot 2 Team, Pot 3 Team, Pot 4 Team
Group B:
Group C:
Group D:
Group E:
Group F:
Group G:
Group H:
Due to “the principle of geographic separation“, Chile and Ecuador will not be in Group A with Brazil. One of the 5 African Teams or the European Team in Pot 3 will be in Group A with Brazil. I think the European Team in Pot 3 will be in the Colombia, Argentina or Uruguay group.
Which African Team do you think will be in Group A with Brazil?

The nations that have qualified for the World Cup

Line up all 32 of the teams that will battle it out next summer for the most prestigious prize in football

With the completion of the European and African play-offs, as well as the intercontinental ties between New Zealand and Mexico, and Uruguay and Jordan, we now know the identity of every participant in the 2014 World Cup.

Tuesday's games saw Portugal book their ticket for next summer's tournament at the expense of Sweden, as Cristiano Ronaldo netted four goals over two matches to help his side to a 4-2 aggregate win.

France, meanwhile, completed an impressive comeback at the Stade de France as they beat Ukraine 3-0 to overturn their 2-0 surprise loss from last Friday.

Elsewhere, Croatia eliminated Iceland as they recorded a 2-0 home win after a scoreless draw in the first leg last week. The final European ticket went to Greece, who sealed qualification with a 1-1 draw versus Romania after a 3-1 first-leg victory.

In Africa, Nigeria became the first team to make it to next year's finals as they beat Ethiopia 2-0 at the weekend to make it 4-1 on aggregate. Cote d'Ivoire also booked their ticket on Saturday as they held Senegal to a 1-1 draw following their first-leg win.

On Sunday, Cameroon qualified with a 4-1 home win over Tunisia, while Ghana eliminated Egypt 7-3 on aggregate despite their 2-1 defeat on Tuesday. Finally, Algeria sealed their World Cup berth following a 1-0 home-win over Burkina Faso that saw them qualify on away goals.

Wednesday's intercontinental play-off between Mexico and New Zealand then saw the former become the penultimate team to reach next summer's tournament. A 4-2 away-win more than proved enough after a heavy 5-1 victory in the first leg.

Later in the day, two-time champions Uruguay were surprisingly held to a 0-0 draw by Jordan in Montevideo, but still cruised through 5-0 on aggregate to become the 32nd and final side to qualify for next summer's finals in Brazil.

Following Sweden's defeat to Portugal in a World Cup play-off the attacker made the incredible claim that Brazil 2014 will not be worth watching now that he is not involved

Sweden international Zlatan Ibrahimovic has made a startling assertion that the 2014 World Cup will not be worth watching following his side's elimination from the play-offs because he will not be there.

Ibrahimovic could not prevent his side's hopes of making it to Brazil from being dashed despite scoring a double, as Cristiano Ronaldo stole the show with an outstanding hat-trick to win the match for Portugal in the second leg play-off 3-2 (4-2 on aggregate).

The 32-year-old, who admits it might be his last attempt to reach a World Cup, says the major tournament being held next June will not be worth following now that he will not be involved.

"It was probably the last attempt to reach the World Cup with the national team for me. One thing is for sure, a World Cup without me is nothing to watch so it is not worth while to wait for the World Cup," he said to his app Zlatan unplugged.

"Congratulations to Portugal, but both teams deserved to get to the World Cup.

"The disappointment of course is great now that the World Cup in Brazil will remain a dream for the Swedish national team."

The Nigeria coach has asked his team to stay fit after playing their last game of the year in Monday’s draw against the Azzurri in London as they look forward to Brazil 2014

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has asked his team to go on break after playing their last game of the year in Monday’s international friendly against Italy in London.

The Super Eagles were held to a 2-2 draw by the Azzurri at Craven Cottage in a very interesting match that was filled with scoring opportunities for both sides.

It was Keshi’s last opportunity in the year to test his team after they secured their fifth World Cup ticket last weekend against Ethiopia in Calabar.

“Maybe, we had too much of respect for [Italy] but I’m sure if by chance we meet at the World Cup, we will put up a better performance,” Keshi was quoted by team media officer Ben Alaiya.

The coach also dismissed the boys for the year and urged them to stay fit and relevant at their clubs in order to ensure they can make the World Cup team to Brazil.

“It’s time to go back and work hard for your various club sides and stay healthy, because that will form the basis for invitation when we resume next year.

“The truth is that not everybody here will go to the World Cup, but that is how football goes, so those who want to be part of the team must remain fit and play regularly for their club sides,” Keshi said.

The Nigeria Football Federation is yet to announce next year’s calendar but Keshi will take charge of the local Super Eagles ahead of January’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) in South Africa.

Three players from the CHAN team started Monday’s friendly against Italy.

The Selecao coach believes the Chelsea boss was simply using the media to give him the upper hand over Barcelona when he criticised the Brazil star for diving

Brazil boss Felipe Scolari has hit out at Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho over his recent comments about Barcelona attacker Neymar.

Mourinho accused Neymar of diving in the wake of Barcelona's Champions League win over Celtic after the Brazilian was involved in an incident which saw Hoops midfielder Scott Brown shown a straight red card.

Scolari has criticised the Portuguese for his remarks, claiming the former Real Madrid boss is just trying to influence the media and referees ahead of any potential meeting with Barca this season.

"Every manager likes to use the media to their own benefit and Mourinho is doing just that," Scolari told The Guardian.

"He knows that Chelsea could play Barcelona in the Champions League sooner or later and he is already putting supporters, media and referees against Neymar.

"It's disappointing and Mourinho didn't really need to resort to that.

"We [Mourinho and I] get along but I find Mourinho's crusade against Neymar absurd."

Neymar has been in fine form for Barcelona since his summer transfer from Santos, scoring five goals in all competitions.

SportsComparing Me With Buffon Is Unnecessary, Says Enyeama by sweetiePe(op): 2:25pm On Nov 18, 2013
https://static.goal.com/320400/320414_heroa.jpg
The Lille goalkeeper has cautioned against making comparisons between him and the Italian shot stopper ahead of Monday’s clash in London

Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama has said he is miles away from being compared with Italian number one Gianluigi Buffon ahead of their international friendly in London on Monday night.

Buffon, 35, made his debut for the Italian senior national team in 1997 in a World Cup qualifier against Russia in Moscow after he was called up to replace injured Gianluca Pagliuca and has never looked back since.

On the other hand, Enyeama made his debut for Nigeria at the 2002 World Cup against England in a third group match where he shut out David Beckham and others for a goalless draw. He led Nigeria to their third African title in February.

Speaking to Goal, Enyeama said it would be massive playing Italy in a friendly match but he was quick to down-play any comparison with Buffon who won the World Cup in 2006.

Enyeama says there's no basis for comparisons

Enyeama has kept seven straight clean sheets for Lille in the French top division coming into the international break. He also helped Nigeria to a 2-0 victory over Ethiopia on Saturday as they got their fifth World Cup ticket 4-1 on aggregate.

He praised the discipline and dedication of the Juventus shot stopper but added that all respect for the Italians would be forgotten as soon as both teams step out onto the pitch.

"I am happy that we are playing a high profile friendly against Italy. We have an opportunity to play against a renowned country and former World and European champions, Enyeama told Goal.

"There is no battle between me and Buffon because we are in two different worlds. He is a good goalkeeper no doubt about that but it would be an unnecessary distraction comparing me with the Italian goalkeeper.

"I expect an exciting match but the battle is beyond two individuals," he said.

Italy-Nigeria Preview: Prandelli to rotate Azzurri against Super Eagles
https://static.goal.com/340700/340741hp2.jpg
Nigeria will hope to celebrate becoming the first African team to qualify for the World Cup with a win over Italy on Monday.

The two sides face each other in an international friendly at Fulham's Craven Cottage, and the Nigerians will undoubtedly be in buoyant mood after sealing their spot at Brazil 2014 with a 2-0 success against Ethiopia in Calabar on Saturday.

Goals from Victor Moses and Victor Obinna sealed a 4-1 aggregate victory, ensuring that the Africa Cup of Nations holders would qualify for their fifth finals in their last six attempts.

The win capped an excellent qualifying campaign for Stephen Keshi's side, who went unbeaten throughout their eight matches.

Victory against Italy would put the seal on a successful 2013, following on from February's triumph over Burkina Faso in the ACN final.

Defender Godfrey Oboabona was taken off on a stretcher 10 minutes into the second half of Saturday's game and could be a doubt for the trip to London.

They face an Italy side who were equally impressive in qualifying, as Cesare Prandelli's outfit also went unbeaten with six wins and four draws from their 10 fixtures in Group B of the European section.

Italy were given a stern test on Friday by Germany, who went in front at San Siro through Mats Hummels before AC Milan right-back Ignazio Abate earned his side a 1-1 draw to maintain Italy's record of having not lost to the Germans since 1995.

Prandelli will be without Juventus defender Andrea Barzagli, who limped out of Friday's clash with a thigh injury and has returned to his club.

After the draw with Germany, Prandelli said he plans to use Monday's game as a chance to rotate his squad.

"This team can certainly improve and we've got to focus on having the right fitness levels in Brazil," he said.

"We now have two days to recover and the plan is to put out an entirely new team in the next game."

The Spaniard believes his Barcelona team-mate can still win the prestigious award and suggested that he is suffering from a lack of confidence due to injury

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has claimed that he would "laugh a lot" if team-mate Lionel Messi wins the Ballon d'Or for a fifth straight year.

The 26-year-old has endured a bumpy 2013, with injuries limiting his playing time as Cristiano Ronaldo and Franck Ribery, his main rivals for the award, have flourished.

However, the former Manchester United centre-back believes that his colleague is still among the favourites to win the prize due to his global popularity.

"Leo can never be ruled out. This is an election in which people vote. He has won four and won the appreciation of the whole world," he told Mundo Deportivo.

"If he wins, I will laugh, a lot. I'm a big fan of Leo, I've always said that. If we evaluate his year, he's been spectacular again.

"I'm not saying that Cristiano has not done well or taking anything away from Ribery."

Pique also gave his thoughts on Messi's recent spate of injuries, suggesting that the Argentine has lost a bit of confidence due to his fitness problems.

"Maybe he has lost confidence. I have never had muscular problems like Leo - touch wood. He's disappointed, that's normal. It's a serious injury."

Messi picked up a hamstring problem in Barca's clash with Betis on Sunday and has been ruled out of action for around six weeks.

The Walya Antelopes refused to take anything for granted ahead of their crucial World Cup qualifier as they ordered locals that came to watch them out of the stadium

Ethiopia's top officials ordered Nigerian fans out of the stadium before they started their final training session on Friday ahead of the 2014 World Cup qualifier against the Super Eagles at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar.

The Walya Antelopes have a must win encounter against the Super Eagles on Saturday and they did not want to take their chances after losing the first leg 2-1 in Addis Ababa despite playing a good game.

Minutes before they commenced their practice session at the UJ Esuene Stadium, the Team Manager of the Ethiopians instructed stern looking policemen to chase the fans out of the stadium while journalists were also made to face similar experience after they had spent the first 15 minutes attending to their job.

No reason was given for such directive but the police carried out the Ethiopians' orders with impunity and chased away everyone out of the stadium arena.

The East African nation is seeking their first ever World Cup ticket while Nigeria will be attending its fifth if the Walya Antelopes are surmounted.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s duel with Zlatan Ibrahimovic to avoid becoming the best player to miss next summer’s World Cup has been overshadowed by claims by Portugal defender Pepe of Fifa bias against his country’s talisman..
Portugal versus Sweden — aka Ronaldo versus Zlatan — stands out as the most eye-catching of the two-legged European play-offs, which begin with the first-legs on Friday night, due to the prospect of one of world football’s aristocrats being forced to watch from home when the World Cup takes place in Brazil.
Real Madrid forward Ronaldo and Paris St-Germain striker Ibrahimovic are both expected to challenge Lionel Messi to become the recipient of this year’s Ballon d’Or — recognised as the prize for the globe’s most outstanding footballer of the year.
But with Fifa president Sepp Blatter ridiculing Ronaldo during a recent speaking engagement at the Oxford Union, Portugal centre-half Pepe claims Blatter’s comments have 'opened people’s eyes’ to alleged bias against the former Manchester United player.
“We know that with Ronaldo’s [goalscoring] figures, it was not normal that he had only won one Ballon d’Or, after having been to seven or eight galas,” Pepe said.

A lawyer was just waking up from anesthesia after surgery, and his wife was sitting by his side. His eyes fluttered open and he said, "You're beautiful!" and then he fell asleep again. His wife had never heard him say that so she stayed by his side.
A couple of minutes later, his eyes fluttered open and he said, "You're cute!". Well, the wife was dissapointed because instead of "beautiful"; it was "cute". She asked, "What happened to 'beautiful'?" His reply was "The drugs are wearing off!"

SportsMikel's Legacy Rests On Getting To The 2014 World Cup by sweetiePe(op): 8:53am On Nov 15, 2013

The Chelsea man has been shortlisted for BBC African Player of the Year, but success against the Walia Antelopes would represent a more significant achievement

While the focus on John Obi Mikel this week has centred upon the midfielder’s nomination for the BBC African Player of the Year, the Chelsea man ought to be concentrated on the weekend’s clash with Ethiopia.

Mikel’s place on the shortlist for the award, where he stands alongside Yaya Toure, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, Jonathan Pitroipa, and his compatriot, Victor Moses, is just desserts for a year in which he has finally delivered on the promise that has long been associated with his name. Ever since exploding onto the scene at the U-17 World Cup in 2003, Nigerians have been waiting for Mikel to finally realise his potential.

I think that the majority of us had given up hope that he would ever blossom into the new Jay-Jay Okocha, a fluid playmaker capable of anything and everything, however, we were almost all still praying that he could emerge as more than the stodgy defensive midfielder to whom regular Premier League viewers had become accustomed.

It was at the Cup of Nations earlier this year that Mikel finally began to take matches in his stride, to dominate the midfield and to drive the team forward with his majestic touches and imperious vision. I have written extensively about the value of the emergence of Ogenyi Onazi, and the Lazio midfielder’s accomplished defensive work, as well as his remarkable maturity, which have allowed Mikel to concentrate more upon the creative side of the game.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Moyes: Manchester United Weren’t Close To Buying Ozil, We Didn’t Need Him by sweetiePe(op): 11:08am On Nov 09, 2013

The Scot says that the Red Devils were not interested in signing the Germany international as they already had similar players in the squad such as Shinji Kagawa and Wayne Rooney

David Moyes says Manchester United did not try to sign Mesut Ozil in the summer because he was a player they "didn’t need”.

The Germany international moved from Real Madrid to Arsenal in August and has proved to be an instant success at the Emirates, helping the Gunners to the top of the Premier League table.

Ozil had also been linked with a move to the Red Devils prior to the deal going through, but Moyes insisted the club were never close to bringing him to Old Trafford.

“We weren’t close to buying him but something was mooted a little bit before that,” Moyes told reporters.

“We didn’t need that position at the time. I didn’t even say it was an interest, it was put to us and it was just something at the time we didn’t need.

“We had Shinji Kagawa and Wayne Rooney and people of a similar ilk so it wasn’t quite what we required at that time. We were looking at different positions.”

Moyes will face Ozil and Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday and the Scot is confident his side are facing the in-form Gunners at the right time, after an inconsistent start to the season.

“Arsenal are coming to play the champions, but I think their form is very good and they will come in good spirit,” he added.

“But we have some good momentum. Our performances are improving, there are signs we are coming into a bit of form, so hopefully it will make for a good game.”

SportsKelechi Iheanacho Hopes To Land The Big One Against Mexico by sweetiePe(op): 3:40am On Nov 08, 2013

The playmaker has been in his elements in the UAE and hit four goals against Mexico in the opener

Kelechi Iheanacho was the chief protagonist for the Golden Eaglets in their 6-1 demolition of Mexico in their first match at the Fifa U-17 World Cup in the UAE and could settle the final game in Nigeria's favour because of that fear factor

“I’m sure they won’t feel great about that first result,” Iheanacho told fifa.com after beating Sweden in Dubai in the semi-finals on Tuesday.

“They’ll want to put pressure on us and we’ll have to be careful. We’ll respect them, but it’s hard to go against us when we’re playing our good football.

“It doesn’t matter in our team who scores the goals, who finishes top scorer or top player,” he added.

Though he acknowledges that the Mexicans will be better prepared for this second meeting, Iheanacho said the Eaglets are better than when they met on October 19 at the Al Ain Stadium.

“We’ve got better since that opener,” he said.

“We’ve become closer and we’re going to chase them all over the field; we’re going to press them with our attackers and we won’t rest.

"We’ll go at them for 90 minutes until we’re sure the trophy is ours.”

Iheanacho, who has scored five goals and created seven in this tournament, believes he is both adept at creating and scoring goals.

“It’s not important to call yourself one or the other. If I’m in a good position to score then I’m happy to put the ball in the back of the net, but if I’m not, and I see someone in a better position, I’ll give it to him.

"It doesn’t matter in our team who scores the goals, who finishes top scorer or top player. It’s a collective effort," he concluded.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Napoli Clash Is Like A Cup Final - Bonucci by sweetiePe(op): 2:48am On Nov 08, 2013

The defender feels it is "imperative" that his side secure a win over Rafa Benitez's title challengers and has called for "ferocity" in their remaining Champions League matches

Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci has described this weekend's top-of-the-table encounter with Napoli as a "cup final" and says it is crucial his side secure maximum points.

With both the champions and Rafa Benitez's side locked on 28 points from 11 games, just three points behind leaders Roma, Sunday's meeting in Turin is already being billed as a decisive encounter in the race for the Scudetto this season.

Bonucci is under no illusions as to the importance of a win for Antonio Conte's men, and is expecting a stern challenge from the Partenopei.

"It's imperative that we win in our beautiful stadium in front of our fantastic fans," Bonucci told Juve's official website.

"I'm expecting a real cup final between us and Napoli, it will be a great game. May the best team win."

Bonucci admits the midweek draw with Real Madrid was frustrating and has urged his team-mates to show "ferocity" as they look to continue their push for trophies on all fronts in 2013-14.

"We need to go further, we have to feel stronger and be more aware of our strength," said the Italy international.

"If we address them with ferocity and conviction, I'm sure we can achieve something magical."

SportsSweden's Larsson Tips Nigeria's U-17 Team For The Fifa U-17 World Cup by sweetiePe(op): 3:34am On Nov 07, 2013

The Blagult helmsman has hailed the Nigerians and has said it would be a miracle if the team does not win the world cup on Friday in Abu Dhabi

Sweden's coach, Roland Larssson has expressed that his side lost to a better side and that he had no regrets exiting the FifaU-17 World Cup at the semi final stage on Tuesday.

The Swedes had held Nigeria to a 3-3 draw in the first round but could not muster the same kind of score on Tuesday.

The Blagult eventually lost 3-0 to the Eaglets but Larsson told Goal in Dubai that he was happy that his squad could get to the last four of the world fiesta in their very first attempt after struggling with qualification all these years.

"By my own position, I will say the Eaglets deserve to win the World Cup. They have played the best football and have been impressive from the start of the competition till date,” Larssson said.

He noted that the Eaglets deserve to win the world cup because they have played the best football at the competition.

"They have improved from their first game till the semi final. They are the best team," Swedish coach added.

The Swedish youngsters barely qualified for the European championship after only securing berth at the dead in their final home game before they got to the semi final at the European championship but lost to the eventually winners, Russia on penalties.

Larsson said they would return to Stockholm hoping to continue from where they stopped in the UAE.
