Sept. 27, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The first of hundreds of Toronto subway cars that will furnish a new surface rail line in Lagos, Nigeria, has left Canada for the last time, and is now en route to Africa's largest city.

A Nigerian company, Eko Rail, has agreed to purchase 255 of the Toronto Transit Commission's (TTC) best-equipped subway cars for use in a much-needed Lagos Blue Line mass transit system. The TTC is in the process of purchasing larger "Rocket" trains to increase passenger capacity on their lines.

As the electric-powered cars become surplus and are pulled offline in Toronto, they will be individually trucked to the United States for a rebuilding by a team of world-class rail engineers. The cars will also undergo track-width (or "gauge" conversion and interior refurbishment before being shipped to Lagos.

The trains have been inspected by the Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, who endorsed the plan to purchase them following his official visit to Toronto in May 2011.

"The shipment of the first car is an important step in Eko Rail's efforts to support the Governor's transformation agenda for the city," said David Potter, Eko Rail's Chief Engineer. "Ultimately, the Blue Line, with this modernized fleet, will bring massive benefits to Lagos' economic development and improve Lagosians' quality of life."

Each of the TTC cars come equipped with air conditioning, automatic sliding doors, solid-state traction control, energy saving regenerative braking, and a wide range of modern safety features and amenities. Once equipped with a state-of-the-art, GPS-based train control system made by General Electric, Eko Rail's trains will provide faster, safer, cheaper and more reliable transportation for Lagosians.

Eko Rail is entering into an innovative public-private partnership with the government of Lagos State to equip, operate and maintain the Blue Line for 25 years. Negotiations are being finalized and a concession agreement is expected to be signed in the near future. Lagos State has already started to make significant progress with building the rail tracks and stations. Eko Rail is utilizing URS Scott Wilson, one of the world's leading railway infrastructure consultancies, to ensure that the infrastructure is built to global standards.

With financing led by Investec Plc, financiers of more than 25 rail projects around the globe, Eko Rail expects to invest about $400 million to equip the Lagos Blue Line, including construction of a dual-fuel electric power generating station, modern train control system, communications and power distribution, as well as depot and maintenance facilities. When the entire line is operational, Eko Rail expects to attract at least 300,000 passengers per day, with trains running every 5 minutes.

The Eko Rail consortium - led by Nigerian-based emerging markets investment firm Verod Capital - brings together a world-class team of manufacturers, technical advisors, metro operators and public private partnership experts from the UK, Canada and South Africa.

I can only hope that your prediction strikes off the mark. One thing is certain, Abians want change. Paul Ikonne may be viewed as a light weight but he may just be the beneficiary of a desire for change, any change. Clearly, the older folks have left a lot of Abians disillusioned.

Prince Paul Ikonne says he wants to bring unprecedented development to Abia State in many ways. He is taking inspiration from fellow ACN Fashola of Lagos. I like the guy.

Our Position on Doctors' Strike, by Lagos Government

Contrary to the erroneous impression being created that the strike by the medical doctors in Lagos State had lingered because of the refusal of the State Government to negotiate with them, emerging facts have shown that doctors have consistently spurned all avenues for negotiation.

According to a Press Statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Opeyemi Bamidele, made available over the weekend, the strike by the medical doctors has continued up till now in spite of the personal intervention from the Governor, former Governors, the State House of Assembly, elder statesmen, Senior Clergymen, senior medical practitioners and well meaning Lagosians.

The strike which the Commissioner said, has caused undue hardship for the citizenry is being prolonged because of the Doctors' insistence that all existing Establishment and Civil Service procedures be set aside by the Governor by arbitrarily directing a salary increment for doctors alone to the exclusion of other professional cadres in the health sector and service wide.

Giving an insight into the genesis of the current stand-off, the Commissioner said, Lagos State had always enjoyed harmonious labour- government relations and had resolved amicably several labour disputes .

Specifically on the doctors, Mr. Bamidele said that the Lagos State Government in 2009 effected an upward review of salaries of medical doctors which brought them at par with doctors at the federal level.

Also, as a show of goodwill and in recognition of their peculiar service, the state government approved allocation of vehicles for professionals in the health sector including doctors in phases. The first phase of 100 had been allocated while the delivery of the vehicles for the second phase is being awaited,

The 40 channels on DSTV ACCESS include about 15 radio channels and like 7 Nigerian local channels, even including dead MBI. Get the info right before you commit you money.

MGM, Nickelodeon and E! entertainment are now showing. That makes it 35 channels working fine right now, not counting the bad girl channel.

The listed channels are for N1,000. That is the only bouquet they have for now. I don't know what they will come up with in the future.

I share your sentiments. Yes I'm watching BB and it is almost addictive. I have been trying hard not to admit that publicly. One almost feels irresponsible being hooked up on the antics of guys and gals living in a house.

Funny isn't it? The way these folks just throw the Proudly Nigerian slogan at you and expect you to accept part with your hard earned money for any kind of sub-standard service. Is that what proudly nigerian is about?

I haven't seen what is so proudly nigerian about HITV. Their poor quality is a disservice to nigeria and I don't think Nigerians can be proud of them in any way. And to think that they want folks to pay more for less! And now they are harrassing Viewing Centres with police - very proudly nigerian.

The only reason I pray for HITV's survival is so that they can continue to keep DSTV, the preferred Pay TV, on their toes as has been the case in the short time HITV has existed.

The truth is nobody is satisfied with HITV right now and they will probably continue to lose subscribers to DSTV and FTA.

The likes of Urfriend and Rahym should save their breath. They are unfortunately preaching to an empty church.

Yes, I find it strange too. I'll take your advice and upgrade the decoder. I guess I can get the upgrade at www.strong-technologies.com. Right?

It's a very old smartcard. It's been used for years, and was working with the strong decoder till just 3 days ago.

It's all green, on all the channels. But I keep getting Scrambled Channel even though my account is active i.e. I pay my subscription regularly and the DSTV helpline people told me that I am not owing and my account is active. In fact they say they can't understand why I am scrambled since everything looks ok from their end.

Is anybody out there still receiving DSTV signals using Strong decoder?
I've been using my Strong decoder for DSTV for months now but lost all signals a few days ago. I've called the customer care lines severally and even though they tried to help, it was to no avail.
Am I alone in this?

Not happening for me too. I've sent the smartcard number to 30333 for days now and my BBA channel still not showing. Even sent them an email as suggested on the customer care line, still waiting.

Hey bro, I think you aren't getting across to the guy. I thought your point was clear enough.

Ok, the guy got DSTV a few years ago for purely sports reasons. Then, DSTV promised him all the sports he needed and they delivered. The fact now is that DSTV made it clear to all and sundry that they don't have the premiership 100% like they used to in Nigeria. So now they promised us only 20% of EPL games and they are delivering on that too.

So if one's interest is simply EPL, then it is clear that DSTV may not be that cool for him and they have made all that clear. The guy who lives and breathes EPL can simply discontinue his DSTV subscription and find an alternative where his desires are met. It would be unfair for such a guy to accuse DSTV of fraud!

On to other stuff. Are you awaiting BBA Revolution? And what is this thing with sending an SMS request in order to receive it. Also, are you still using the Strong or DSTV branded decoder? Someone said BBA may not be receivable by those using Strong. Any truth in that?

They have the La Liga and its starting on Saturday. When you dont see it on the appointed date for it, then you have the right to sue them. Its like someone giving you a cheque to cash tomorrow but you go and try to cash it today then call up the person to complain.

On another note, if you live and breathe football, then for now, you should go get Hitv(caveat emptor).

Spot on, Soloqy (good to catch you here). I think phreakabit got his facts wrong. Some people may accuse DSTV of certain things but not the stuff phreakabit spoke about. You and I know where near-fraud is being committed in the Nigerian pay-tv terrain.

I just renewed my Premium subscription for another month today and I'm glad to do so. The past few days have been really good. What with the IAAF world championships, the high broadcast quality EPL games, a copious amount of pre-season warm-up games etc. And that is not counting a number of great movies and series; and well, naija sings, which may not be the best musical talent hunt reality show but still one which offers good entertainment and many talking points.

I was sad to see GO go (pardon the pun) and will be hoping DSTV compensates us by adding an equally entertaining channel as a replacement.

After all said and done, DSTV may not be perfect but in this environment where both goverment and private institutions take one for granted leaving you little or no recourse, DSTV are ok.

Finally, why are you being mean to the poor guy by suggesting HITV? If the guy can complain this bitterly about DSTV what do you think will happen to him when HITV handles him for a week? Maybe they'll start by yanking off half of the channels he paid for, and then he'll spend the next 2 weeks trying to reach their customer service. Eventually someone will tell him to upgrade his decoder somewhere in Ebute_metta. And all that will just be the beginning of the problems. I've been there.

I am enjoying all the hassle free options on DSTV compact. And rather than pay 6k to hitv for only premiership and champions league without any claim on quality entertainment, I would rather pay the 9k Premium of DSTV and watch all the Laliga, Serie A, Three Live English Premiership matches per week, French Championat, All the Grade A friendlies and world cup qualifiers, MLS, Scotish Premiership, Brasilian league and also all the world cups both junior and senior. Add that to all the great movies, documentaries, series and realities that you too can testify of.

Hello broda, long time! You couldn't have said it better. I've been kept away from this thread cos I've been having a great time since I moved over to DSTV. After the wedding, the wife compelled me to upgrade to DSTV Premium from Compact and trust me, I haven't regretted it for a minute.

Yes, 9k monthly is a lot of money. I'm not that rich yet, but I can see I am getting great value for my money.

I'll never understand why HITV thinks they can make folks pay more money for less and poorer quality content, talkless of appalling customer care. If they don't know why their subscribers are not renewing their subscriptions then they are even worse businessmen than I thought.
