Maigari is surely a cat with 9lives but Who cares? My own is let Fifa nt ban us o. Chris Giwa should contest the proper way if he wants to b NFF boss. |
liljboy10: hey xfire and all, please am a 200lvl undergraduate of a top federal uni in nigeria wit a cgpa of 4.7...if I end up graduating with a first class, does that mean I will definitely be picked in an administrative role in the oil and gas industry? or I will still work very hard like everyone else...cos m so worried about how my hard work would pay me off after schoolY do u think they'll want to put u in an administrative position. Let me advice u, don't get carried away. First work hard to ensure u finish with ur first class. And note that the hard work does nt stop in school. There are numerous first class graduates out there still searching for job. A first class is nt a guarantee, u still have to compete mostly with 2:1 graduates who are almost equally smart. No complacency bro. |
crudedude: Sorry to say but this connect-me-to-a-job-here-is-my-contact posts are quite .......................(insert appropriate adjective here).Yes it is true that age limit is very important. However, in Oil and Gas it is NOTusually pegged to say 25, 26, 27 etc. What some do is just specify that applicant should have graduated not more than 5 yrs ago, some would say should have 0-3 yrs experience, some also still peg maximum age bt usually 27-30. So if you didn't graduate from school in good time u still stand a chance in d industry.Age was nt in my favour during my time. I got my first Oil industry job @27 (4 months after NYSC) and got my present job @29(I was still employed as a Trainee cos I still qualified age-wise). |
SirChotas: Why isn't Nigeria at the CAF youth championship? Can anyone give us a summary of the story?Mtcheew. U must b a Chelsea fan. Tell me I am wrong. |
razar: Please sir XFIRE, SYENITE and other Experienced fellows the house. My brother, I don't think being a former students union leader will give u any edge In terms of job search.Infact, employers frown at unionism. U know ur capabilities and weaknesses.Nothing bad in being the NUESA president as long as u still remain focused in ur studies. So, if u feel u can cope den go ahead. |

gudrated: With a degree in Applied Geophysics, I will rather advise you to go for a Masters (look for scholarship opportunities). Geoscientists have better opportunities with a Masters or even PhD. Companies like Exxon or Total won't even consider you if you don't have Masters. Chevron's is open to BSc but that they seem to be more disposed to candidates with MSc from good schools. Shell is also open to all, but even then prefer experienced hires with higher degrees. I can remember an experienced geophysicist friend of mine (works in National Geological Agency or so)who went for an interview for the position of experienced geophysicist. He has an MSc in geophysics. He didn't pass the interview but the panel members told him that they would have strongly considered him for employment if he had a PhD. He is presently on his PhD programme in Geophysics. With the Exception of Mobil which prefers an M.Sc in Geosciences, most other Oil firms like: Total, NNPC, DPR, Shell, Chevron, NLNG, Sinopec and servicing firms like Schlumberger, Baker, PDL, Halliburton, Weatherford etc only need ur B.sc. If u have an M.sc fine. Jst know that employment at entry level is age bound. If u chase an M.Sc and pass d employable age limit, too bad. However, if u graduated with less than 2:1 & feel an M.sc will give u a better chance, all good. BUT KNOW THAT A FIRST DEGREE ALONE CAN BREAK U INTO THE OIL AND GAS SECTOR. |
dannisexy: Thank you very much sir 4 this wonderful insight,Your B.Sc or B.Tech in Applied Geophysics is enough as long as u have a good grade. |
What do u expect from a Party of Almajiris and suicide bombers. Dey will continue to eliminate themselves until 2019 when we'll consider whether to seed power to them or not. They have suddenly become a minority in Nigeria ![]() |
xfire: People mostly start with the wrong question - Asking about certifications! Being a technical safety / loss prevention engineer is not about certifications. It is more about experience. One needs to have indepth understanding of oil / gas processes and facilities, design and safety engineering philosophies. It takes years of experience to acquire, and it involves a lot of personal studies and diligence. Like I said, don't feel overwhelmed. The easiest way to kick start your career in that line is to start first as a facilities, I & E, process or machinery engineering. With a good engineering degree, you can get entry level positions in the fields. Sometimes, you can be lucky to be employed directly as a trainee safety engineer.U can't be more right bro. I wonder where they got this Certification thing from? Ur degree certificate and experience counts far more than Certification. Companies may emphasise on certifications when dey recruit experienced hires even so they emphasise the required yrs of experience and den state dat certain certifications will b an added advantage. (Although some may state some "Must have" certifications) |
Charlesberry: Broz. I'm still an undergraduate, I have a a diploma degree in personnel management and I just switch to economics dru direct entry... I'm thinking after my bsc with strike like three professional course in economics, taxation etc and also adding to that IT professional course like oracle/ data base management, With that do I stand a change of gaining my way into an oil and gas companies in nigeria? After u obtain ur B.Sc in Economics u dnt need any professional course or certification to b a Graduate or Management Trainee in d Oil and Gas sector. Just ensure u finish with a Good grade. |
demola7: I studied Industrial technology Education, electrical/electronic option, did a lot of courses such as safety, quality control, electrical designs and so on, do I ave a chance to work in the O&G firm?Education? This one is hard o. |
Jfactor: I am biochemist, M.Sc industrial chemist, first aider, been in the agric sector lik 10yrs. Where can i fit in d O & G. I am toxicologist and researched in environmental spill.Look out for the next NNPC experienced hire recruitment. I know some Toxicologist working with the NNPC. The industry is vast and diverse. |
Tex42: good day syenite. i am a civil engr student,in my 4th year actually. What u just need to do for urself now is to remain focused and graduate with at least a 2:1. U may nt need any certification to b a Trainee Engineer in d Oil sector. Ur potential employer will assign u roles from which u can choose a career path. A good number of Civil engineers are employed in d Oil and Gas sector. |
arbitrage: For the pages of this thread I have read so far (though I didn't read all through), nobody has mentioned the place of God's favour and/or connection in securing these Oil and Gas job opportunities. While making your preparations, we cannot rule out divine favour and knowing people who can link you too. Sometimes, it is not only because of your relevant and/or irrelevant degree. I am saying that because there are so many graduates with relevant degrees who have also not secured these jobs. At least, I know of persons (male and female) working in the oil and gas industry with degrees in Plant Science, Mass Communication, Law, Agric Engineering, Biochemistry, Quantity Surveying, etc. I must quickly add too that some among them (not all) were taken based on quota system for oil producing communities. So if it's your community's turn, the company cannot turn it down because of non-relevant degree. Some were taken, however, not based on that quota but their performance at aptitude test.We are talking about what is obtainable in the sector. We also believe in God and divine favour. KNOW NOW THAT GOD CANNOT FAVOUR EVERYBODY AND NOT EVERYBODY HAS CONNECTION. Advice given by xfire and others are based on reality on ground. Depend only on divine favour and connection and see ur dreams crash like dat Dana plane. ![]() |

VibrationsZ: What chance do I stand, bsc metallugical and materials engg, msc production/mech engg, no special certificationIf u had at least a 2:1 in ur first degree and u are of d right age, then u've got all it takes. |
Duke007: @ Xfire, RentedReality and others, pls l will need your opinion on this: l am 35 yrs old with M.Eng, PGD, HND in Agric engineering and OSHA (1,2,3 & fire prevention) certification. I have 10 yrs experience on maintenance of heavy duty machineries and Operations management in d construction industry. What are my chances in d oil&gas ind. ThanksLook out for the next NNPC experienced hire recruitment. No doubt they will fix u in any of the operations if u are selected. |
bluish: @xfire and othersRefining and Petrochemicals, R & D. Ur good first degree alone is enough to take u there. Don't waste ur money on any certification for now. |
profeoo: @ Xfire/Imagwe As a Geology graduate u should be looking at acquiring software skills in Petrel, Landmark, Kingdom suites, Omni vista and co and nt those u mentioned above. Those aside, the most important thing u have now dat can fetch u dat Oil and Gas job is that ur B.Sc. |
winner01: Agric no fit in here? funny. But no discipline is useless. Like as d op said, those are d disciplines in HIGHEST demand. |
akogunreloaded: . Please can you list few companies under this section?Google is ur friend. |
TheCode: syenite, xfire, any other O&G expert (esp engineering), pls adviceSee, my brother, y narrow down ur chances at this stage? Try and get a job with ur first degree and then your future role in d company will give u a direction on which area to specialise. What if u obtain that ur EOR M.sc and u get a job as an MWD/LWD engineer or even a Drilling engineer? |
Flips: Sir, do non-technical grads have a chance in the industry? like social science grads e.g. economics, philosophy, business admin?Yes. When u enter with ur B.Sc d company will chose ur area of specialization. |
Joy83: Thank you for this enlightenment, I believe you are a graduate of geology which is the same as mine. Pls do you have any postgraduate degree? I don't have any company experience and currently trying to go for my MSc in Petroleum geology, am even now debating on whether to go for petroleum engineering.Joy, with a good first degree(atleast a 2:1) in Geology u dnt need an M.Sc to get a job. I joined d Oil industry with a B.Sc in Geology and later went for an M.Sc in Energy and Petroleum Economics. Getting an M.Sc b4 searching for job puts u at a disadvantage age-wise as u still have to apply as a trainee of which there are age limits. However if u finished with a 2:2 & feel the only way to better ur chance is an M.Sc then Good-Luck. On issue choice of Petroleum Geosciences or Petroleum Engineering, u know ur competency level. Just b sincere to ur selve. it usually requires so much effort and a high IQ for some1 to switch from Geosciences to engineering. It is usually easier for people with first class and 2:1 to make such switch. |
Michaelemry: sir tank u so much for this ur information.please sir i wanted to read quantity survey or survey geoinformatics what advice do u have for me because am confuse am nt totatly convince on the course i just want a highly demanding course these days in the oil sector that people dnt study at schoolSo y do want to study a course dat u are confused and not convinced about? And then ualso u want to study a highly demanding course that people don't study at school? |
akogunreloaded: Goodmorning..a nice thread indeed...Please, what of the Industrial Chemists? How do they fit in?Refinery Operations and Petrochemicals. |
legendary4luv: Pls op and all the experience bodies in this thread, can " Physics with Production Technology" graduate work in petroleum and gas industryU mean Physics with Production Technology option? Well breaking it down; Servicing firms employ physics graduates alot. They work as MWD/LWD Engineers, Wireline Engineers some are even Petrophysicists and Pore Pressure Engineers. And also Production technology (P. Tech) is d next big thing in d oil industry these days. |
Great thread. God bless u xfire. It is threads like this that I like to see and not threads that will make fresh graduates and undergraduates feel the only thing u need to get a job is connection. I am also an Oil and Gas expert. I have worked both in a servicing firm and currently with an E & P. Your are 99% right abt the top 10 specialised skills you mentioned. Zeroing in on the ratio of Geoscientists to Engineers, it is only normal to have a ratio of 1:5, 6 or7. Geosciences is made of just two fields: Geology (80% of Geoscientists) and Geophysics. But Engineering is made up of multiple desciplines:Electrical, Mechanical, Petroleum, Civil, Chemical, Metallurgical, Production etc In addition only mayb 1 or 2 Polytechnics offer Geology but almost all Polytechnics offer most of the engineering courses. This has there4 created a situation where we have a far less no. of Geoscientists compared to engineers in d market. On the issue of having d necessary experiencee, here is how I got my first job as a trainee: The advert was for people with 2-5yrs experience in the field of Biostratigraphy (a branch of geology). I had zero experience bt still applied. I was called for test and interview and I got d job. I later learnt dat they could not get people of 2-5 yrs experience cos dey were already gainfully employed elsewhere so dey decided to take fresh graduates & den train dem to do d job. Last bullet to d undergraduates ; academic excellence is the key to the Oil industry. First class or 2:1 in any of d Engineering or Geosciences field and u have a good chance. |
@OP So u survived the current cholera outbreak in Greater Accra and environs. Abeg help us search for ur fellow Gayna weed takers like Jiggaman and Oxygen. Did dey survive it? |
blueto: Have you heard about Jiggaman again?Eyaa hope he survives the cholera epidemic o. Oxygen nko o? |

I saw his comment recently
funny. But no discipline is useless. Like as d op said, those are d disciplines in HIGHEST demand.
