The Banker magazine, a publication of Financial Times of London, has named Zenith Bank Plc, the “Bank of the Year Nigeria 2013” at an award ceremony held at the Intercontinental Park Lane Hotel, London.

The award ceremony, which was attended by leading personalities and institutions in business and finance from around the world, celebrates the achievements of the world’s leading financial institutions.

Nominees for the award were judged by their ability to deliver shareholder returns and gain strategic advantage in terms of market visibility and positioning.

The award was also indicative of the level of trust and confidence on the brand and is a testament to the strong management, sound business model and prudent risk approach of Zenith Bank.

According to The Banker magazine, Zenith Bank was selected based on the overall performance of the institution and the opinion of leading financial analysts from the world’s financial markets.

Receiving the award on behalf of the bank, the bank’s Group Managing Director, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, dedicated the award to his bank’s customers while commending management and staff for working excellently to build Zenith into a respectable global brand.

He said: “The bank's competitive advantage as a financial powerhouse for value creation in Nigeria and the several achievements and successes of the brand are a result of a strategic combination of people talent, proprietary knowledge, strong brand equity, leadership, integrity and relationship management.”
Earlier in the year, Zenith Bank was named Nigeria’s largest financial institution by The Banker Magazine. In its 2013 rating of the world’s Top 1,000 banks, magazine listed the bank as Africa’s 6th largest by Tier 1 capital having grown its Tier I capital to $2.969 billion within 12 months.

Zenith Bank has continually evolved through innovation, dynamism, insight and leadership and has ultimately become a brand respected globally for its tremendous success in the deployment of cutting-edge technology, niche marketing, competitive advantage, provisioning and unwavering commitment to providing best-in-class service to its customers.

An eloquent attestation of Zenith Bank’s best-in-class customer-centric service delivery was made by KPMG in its 2013 Banking Industry Customer Satisfaction Survey (BICSS).

Zenith Bank Nigeria was ranked the best Customer-Focused bank in both the retail and corporate banking categories on the basis of a Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) which took into account key factors like, Convenience, Product/Service Offering, Transaction Methods and Systems, Pricing and Customer Care.

The survey covered more than 14,000 retail customers, 3,000 SMEs and 400 corporate/commercial organisations across Nigeria.

The bank maintains a sound corporate governance culture in line with global best practices. The bank's core values include service excellence, investment in human capital development, superior asset quality and strong credit culture.

It also prides itself as having good and sustainable earnings, strong capital base, unrivalled professionalism and community development. This reflects in the bank's consistent impressive growth pattern and performance, which have earned Zenith Bank excellent ratings from local and international agencies.

EducationParents Keep Your Children At Home For Safety - ASUU by sylvar02(op): 10:41am On Dec 02, 2013
The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Sunday advised parents not to endanger the lives of their children and wards by sending them to their university campuses.

ASUU which also told its members not to sign attendance registers in their institutions, lashed out at the Federal Government for lack of consistency in its statements on the ongoing strike.

The Supervising Minister of Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike, had at a news conference in Abuja on Thursday, warned that any ASUU member that failed to resume on or before Wednesday would be sacked.

Wike also directed vice-chancellors to advertise vacancies (internal and external) in their institutions.

He told the vice-chancellors to open attendance registers for lecturers that resumed in their universities.

The Federal Government then directed the Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, to deploy policemen in all the federal universities.

On Friday, President Goodluck Jonathan, who described the strike by the university teachers as a “subversive action,” added that ASUU had ceased to be a trade union.

But the Chairman, University of Ibadan chapter of ASUU, Dr. Segun Ajiboye, said parents should keep their children and wards at home as no academic activity would resume until the five-month-old strike was called off.

Ajiboye added, “Don’t risk the lives of your children and wards. Keep them at home because ASUU will not teach. Soldiers and the police deployed by the Federal Government will not teach. Wike can come and teach in the universities. It is a huge joke to sack lecturers. Our strike must not be in vain. Our students must see the results.

“It is funny. We thought we are in a democracy. I assure Nigerians that we know what the law says about the strike. Our job is statue backed. We are not threatened. “We do not trust the government. The record of the government is clear. This government is dishonouring agreements. Our members are resolved to pursue this to a logical conclusion.”

Ajiboye also said that the Federal Government’s stance was from a script that was played out by the military administration of Ibrahim Babangida in the 1990s.

He stated, “Dear members, stay calm and remain resolute. There is nothing wrong in asking government to do what it says it will do immediately. ASUU is not making any new demands as the supervising minister is propagating. Government is only repeating a ‘one act play’ scripted by the IBB dictatorship in early 90s. It didn’t work then, and, it won’t work now. All branches are intact. We cannot be intimidated.

“If ASUU could withstand Babangida, this government cannot threaten us. We have worked this road before, the only thing that will work is peaceful resolution. It is sad that government wants to sack us because we are asking for the resolutions. We are ready to be sacked but government should learn from the University of Ilorin experience. We are going to stay the course.”

ASUU President, Dr. Nassir Fagge, urged university teachers on Sunday not to sign any attendance register.

Fagge, in a message to the UI chapter , urged the lecturers to be resolute in their demands despite the threat of insecurity to their jobs.

He said, “Comrades, can you see the unfolding drama? Now Jonathan says they didn’t give ultimatum. That the vice -chancellors did and Wike became their trumpet. But NUC’s (National Universities Commission) ultimatum is by the Federal Government to us to resume or get sacked.

“Wike’s press address says ‘FG has directed’ not ‘VCs have directed.’ Be calm, stay resolute. By God’s grace, we are on course.”

The Chairman, University of Lagos chapter of the union, Dr. Karol Ogbinaka, said Jonathan’s description of the strike as a “subversive action,” was unfortunate.

“How can our action be subversive when we do not have arms and ammunition? We take exception to that. We are academics not coup plotters. I have a feeling he was misquoted. I wish to deny this on his behalf because it is an extreme statement,” Ogbinaka said.

He also faulted the buck passing on the directive to reopen universities, saying it pointed to the fact that the government was “somersaulting.”

According to him, the Federal Government is now shifting the blame among the pro-chancellors, Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Wike.

But the Presidency on Sunday insisted that those behind the strike were enemies of the state.

It said this could be the reason why the ASUU leadership refused to call off the strike even when 42 out of its 61 chapters voted against its continuation.

The Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, stated these at a news conference in Abuja on Sunday.

He wondered why the leadership of the union also refused to call off the strike even after its 13-hour meeting with the President.

Okupe described the strike as an evil programme motivated by selfish political interest.

He said, “The ASUU leadership refused to accede to the wishes of 42 of its 61 chapters nationwide, who voted in favour of the agreement with the President and the calling off of the strike; but in a surprise volte face presented government again with a new set of demands and considerations outside the terms agreed at the presidential intervention.

“From all indications therefore and other information available to government, it has become obvious that this is no longer an altruistic strike borne out of good intentions and aimed at improving the welfare of students and staff of the universities and the standard of our educational institutions.

“Rather it is an evil programme motivated by selfish political interests and motivations within the polity. These are, quoting late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, ‘the enemies of state operating from within’”.

While Okupe was talking tough in Abuja, the All Progressives Congress slammed the government for issuing the sack threat against the university teachers.

In a statement in Lagos, the APC said the resort to military tactics reflected government’s poverty of ideas in resolving the prolonged strike.

The statement by the party’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, also criticised Wike for the way he talked down on the striking teachers, while issuing the threat.

APC stated, ‘’Wike’s language was crude, his presentation was rude and his threat was demeaning and counter-productive. We believe his lack of finesse and the inability to think out of the box in handling the whole strike issue will not bode well for a quick resolution of the crisis.”

Meanwhile, the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress will on Monday(today) meet with the ASUU leadership as part of its efforts to resolve the crisis between the union and the Federal Government.

Christianity EtcHell Await All Catholic Church Member Says Rev. Chris Okotie by sylvar02(op): 1:22am On Dec 02, 2013

Senior pastor of Household of God Church and the most controversial pastor in Nigeria (I Believe), Rev. Chris Okotie has dropped another bombshell. This time he takes it on the catholics, saying they dont believe in the same God he does and the bible talks about.

All Catholics in the world will go to hell because they worship Satan and are led by an Anti-Christ Pope who is a friend to the devil, Nigeria’s controversial preacher and former presidential candidate, Chris Okotie, told his congregation on Sunday, leaving members bewildered.

Fifty-five year old Okotie, while preaching in his Household of God Church in Ikeja area of Lagos, western Nigeria, said the Catholic church is “a counterfeit church set up by Satan” and that Catholics “bow to idols and crucify Jesus every Sunday when they eat bread claiming they are eating Jesus’ body.”

“They are not Christians and have never been,” Okotie told a stunned congregation.

“They don’t know Jesus. They believe that when they eat bread on Sundays, they are eating the body of Jesus. It’s ritual,” Okotie said.

He said Pope Francis is an Anti-Christ who does the job of the devil and that time is fast approaching when the Catholic church will pledge allegiance to Satan.

“The pope is an Anti-Christ and the Catholic church will soon declare for Satan. This is the end of times,” Okotie erupted.

Chris OKotie: Catholics will go to hell

He advised members of his church to come to the rescue of Catholics and evangelise them.

This, he said, was not out of disrespect but out of respect for the word of God.

He said those who know the truth should bring it to those who do not know it in the Catholic Church.

Okotie said one of the Catholic most revered Popes, Pope John Paul 11, surrendered the Catholic Church to Mary, the earthly mother of Jesus Christ, instead of Jesus himself. He said even the current Pope Francis has also done same.

He said Catholics are not Christians and do not worship the same Christ that he preaches in his church, at least the one spoken about in the Bible.

Okotie said he did not write the Bible but it was clear to him that those in the Catholic church were lost and were heading to hell fire.

“They don’t believe in heaven. They believe in purgatory, the purgatory that they invented,” Okotie said.

“That church, the Catholic church has been there for Satan and at the right time, they will declare for Satan,”Okotie said.

Okotie who has been married twice and divorced also twice said a beauty pageant will take place in his church next Sunday to select the most beautiful woman in his church.

He also said his yearly “Grace programme” where he makes donations to charity organisations will also take place next Sunday.

The once rock star turned celebrity preacher and politician has been controversial for years.

He once said it was the devil who told him for the first time that he was going to be a preacher.

He also said Nigeria’s famous preacher Prophet T.B. Joshua is the son of the devil and his followers will go straight to hell.

In recent years, he has been saying that God has anointed him to be Nigeria’s president. That prophecy has not come to pass in two presidential elections that he participated in.

TravelTwo Female Immigration Officers Collapse On Parade Ground by sylvar02(op): 1:33am On Nov 29, 2013
TWO female officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Delta State Command, yesterday, slumped at the parade ground mounted to receive the newly posted Zonal Co-ordinator of Nigeria Immigration Service, Zone G, comprising Delta, Anambra, Edo, Bayelsa and Enugu States, Assistant Comptroller General Mohammed Shaibu.

The incident almost marred the colourful parade but the occasion continuedwhile the collapsed officers were carried out of the parade ground for medical attention.

They slumped one after the other while the Immigration Service boss was addressing the officers and men of the command at about noon.
Fielding questions from newsmen later, Shaibu said the service was collaborating with other sister agencies to ensure effective policing of the country’s borders and at the same time ensuring close monitoring of foreigners flocking into the country.

Said he: “Definitely, the issue is of trying to checkmate the influx of non Nigerians and in doing this, we are also doing it consciously to ensure that whatever relationship we have with any country is not being threatened.

“We are collaborating with other security officers who are involved in border management. As a service, we work as a team to ensure that whatever border challenge that this country experiences is properly tackled collectively.”

“For any nation or any society to progress,  it cannot be only occupant of that particular country. Definitely, you have to accept people and when you are accepting people, those who are coming, you should make sure that they come with travelling documents and properly documented.

And even when they come in, monitoring is one of the blueprints of the present administration.
“So,  apart from ensuring that there is proper documentation at the point of entry by the time they come inside the country we make sure that we monitor them and as we are monitoring them where you have cases of people who maybe one way or the other step on the rules you ensure that proper action is taken”, he added.

He had earlier asked the officers to be red alert in carrying out their duties and make discipline their watchword too.

EducationJAMB Unveils 256 CBT Centers For UTME 2014 From This Year's 56 by sylvar02(op): 8:47pm On Nov 25, 2013
https://mycitynews.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/results-jamb-utme-examination-2010.jpeg
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it has designated 256 centres for the 2014/2015 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Computer Based Test (CBT) across the country.

Mr Fabian Benjamin, the board’s Head of Public Relations, made the disclosure in a telephone interview  on Monday in Lagos.

Benjamin said that the centres were increased from 56 in 2012/2013 to 256 for the forthcoming examination.

He said that the increase was made to accommodate the large number of candidates applying for the CBT.

“Application form is out; preparation for the technical aspect is in top gear and we are always ready.

“Centres that had hitches during the 2012/2013 examination will be corrected, while some may not be used.

“What we already have on ground is close to perfection,“ he said.

The board, in an earlier statement, had announced the commencement of the sale of the application forms for the 2014/2015 academic session UTME.

It advised qualified candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria that online registration would be on until March 14, 2014, while the website would be closed on March 25.

JAMB said that the examination would be conducted on April 5, 2014 for those writing the Paper Pencil Test (PPT) and Dual Based Test (DBT).

It said that the date for the Computer Based Test (CBT) would be announced later.

The board said that the examination centres of the candidates would depend on their chosen towns during online registration. (NAN)
