Wale Fine Girl ft Davido and Olamide


Wale decided to respect the culture and enlisted the help of Nigerian music heavyweights, Davido and Olamide to deliver a summer jam titled Fine Girl that praises the physical and facial attributes of girls worldwide. Housed on the Shine album, Fine Girl currently has over two million views on YouTube and is enjoying massive airplay and support.

Davido Pere ft Young Thug and Rae Sremmurd


DMW superstar, Davido enlists the help of two of the buzzing artists in the American music industry – Young Thug and Rae Sremmurd. The track which was co-written by Dammy Krane, was released under RCA records. The video has over three million views already.

Korede Bello Do Like That ft Kelly Rowland

Dapo Oyebanjo (‘ D ’ Banj ) aka Koko Master released the highly anticipated album ‘ King Don Come ’ , a follow up to his 2008 hit solo album titled ‘ The Entertainer‘ , on the 25th of August, 2017 . The album is his first major post Mo– Hits solo album and critics and music lovers were expectant of what D’ Banj had to offer in the industry where the likes of Wizkid , Davido and some other young artistes have taken over the airwaves with their style of music.

D ’ Banj however springs up an excellent album with a touch of class spanning across various genres of music to appeal to music lovers all over the world , proving Dapo ’s versatility when it comes to music and entertainment and affirming the statement that he is indeed an entertainer and he entertains.

D’ Banj pays homage to the forerunner of Afro- beat ( Fela Anikulapo Kuti ) with tracks like ‘ As I dey go ’ and the previously released hit singles , Emergency and Focus. ‘ As I dey go ‘ talks about how God has been protecting him and blessing him in spite of the criticisms and obstacles he had faced . Focus on the other hand featured a new twist as a new verse was added which birthed the remix entitled Turn Down For What . “ Awon omo merin gba number” D ’Banj didn ’t fail to deliver on this Fela inspired tune as he urged the listeners to focus on enjoying themselves and turn down for nothing .

Talking about the harmonica , ‘ Shoulda’ reminds one of the typical D ’ Banj as he sings to his lady that she can always rest on his shoulder whenever she is in trouble. The track has ‘ hit ’ written all over it if well promoted. D ’Banj did not only touch on the subject of love on ‘Shoulda ’ but also on the Cheeky Chizzy produced ‘ Be With You’ , where he confesses his desire to be with the love of his life . On the trap influenced and Maleek Berry produced ‘EL CHAPO ’, D’ Banj switch things up a bit, performing quite beyond expected on the trap beat as he bragged about being number one and being a boss like the drug lord, ‘EL Chapo’ . With the support of Atlantic records act , Gucci Mane and the extremely dope verse by Wande Coal , ‘ El chapo’ seems to be a fine material that can replicate the same success D’ Banj achieved with Oliver Twist in the international music scene . Maleek Berry also did an awesome job on the beat .

One of the weak points of the album is when D’ Banj decided to go ‘ Despacito ’ on us with the track ‘ Te Neccesito ’ which results in nothing but an album filler .

For the gbedu and dance loving music listeners across Africa and the world at large , D ’Banj didn ’ t exclude content as regards their taste . Heard Igwe by D ’Banj ? reminiscent of Igwe is Egweji. Egweji is a highlife tune dedicated to the fans from the eastern region of Nigeria and he features Ghost Mode crooner Phyno to create a groovy , dance- able tune for all. Lest I forget , the use of D ’ Banj ’ s signature harmonica was a big addition to the track .

‘That ’ s What I Mean‘ featuring Kayswitch (who delivered quite well ) and music from the movie ‘Coming to America ’ is a groovy track that is sure to get everyone on the dance floor as long as no one ‘ Pariwo ji Daniel ’ ( his son ) as he states in the track .

Nstwempu which means Incredible, featuring South Africa artist Bucie who also featured on Wizkid’ s STFOS is another major track that is sure to get listeners swaying to the melody and amazing beat . D ’ Banj experiments with South African house music on the track and we can confidently say he didn ’ t disappoint .

And then we have the Sukus and gyration influenced I t ’ s Not A Lie which urges us to google D ’ Banj . The song which is reminiscent of Harrysong style of music also has Harrysong on the hook and a verse from Wande Coal .

With themes such as Love (Be with You, Shoulda) , Supremacy (El chapo, It’ s Not A Lie, Egweji) , Partying ( Turn Down For What , That ’ s What I Mean) and even giving Gratitude to God (As I dey Go) , D’ Banj attempts to entertain the world by pleasing listeners with the African sound as well as experimenting all other genres and the effort to appeal to a global audience is observed.

The return of his harmonica on some tracks shows that D ’ Banj is not here to play and is ready to give fans the magic that endeared him to them in the first place and a seemingly interesting and working relationship is seen between D ’ Banj and Cheeky Chizzy who worked on almost all the tracks on the project . Has D’ Banj found a new Don Jazzy ?

D’ Banj shows an amazing level of energy on the project with a sizeable amount of well - crafted lyrics across tracks on the project. Record Labels And Radio Plays
This is connected with the first fact, Record
labels understand the market better and nobody
wants to invest without hoping to make profit .
People must be able to relate to your songs
and if at least 30, 000 Lagosians whom will
listen to your song being promoted on Cool
FM, Beat FM etc can relate with your Yoruba
slang and lyrics , you know you are going
somewhere already . So record labels
sometimes enforce this option on their signed
artists in order to gain wider access and push
their artistes . It should also be noted that radio
stations may want to appeal majorly to the
higher percentage of their listeners which lead
to playing more Yoruba influenced songs.



Historical Antecedent
Fela Anikulapo Kuti is the one of greatest
musician to come out of Nigeria . He had a lot
of international recognition and he is well
respected. He is Yoruba. Ebenezer Obey, Sir
Shina Peters , Adewale Ayuba , Dele Taiwo, Dipo
Sodipo, Barrister Kollington are all well known
and respected Nigerian musicians that perform
in all parts of the country . Many artists tend
are in cognizance to this fact and thus resort to
adopting the language these legends used in
creating good music and getting across to
fans. Many artists today are all trying to follow
the footsteps of Fela and how can you follow
Fela if you don’ t use some elements of his
music like his language which is Yoruba?



Population And Culture
Yorubas are one of the most populated tribes
in the country and the fact that they are mostly
literates that have the taste for good music
also contributes to this fact. We must not also
forget that the Yorubas throw parties
(owambes) a lot and if you as an artiste want
your song at constant rotation at the numerous
Yoruba parties and consequently more shows ,
be ready to infuse Yoruba in one of your songs .
Words like ‘ mojisola peperenpe oo, folake ooo ’
and you are mainstream .



Present Examples
Mention top ten most respected and popular
artistes in Nigeria today and six of them will
be Yoruba or artistes that infuse Yoruba or
practically sing with Yoruba language as lyrics .
Artistes who use the Yoruba language are more
widely known and successful with chances of
cutting across the country as a whole . It ’s
either you feature a Yoruba speaking artiste or
do one or two songs in Yoruba, though you
might use or sing in other languages , Yoruba is
inevitable.





Factors like diversity should also be taken into
consideration. The Yoruba music has a lot of
genres under it with a lot of options available
to the artistes . There is Juju, Apala, Dadakuada ,
Fuji and many more . This makes it easier for
artistes to choose among the diverse genres
and fit in ( as seen in Terry Apala who hails
from Delta and sings Apala music ) . The fact
that Yoruba language is pleasing to the ear , can
be easily learnt and repeated by anyone in
minutes when heard in a song also contributes
to its usage in most Nigerians song .



Finally , it is pertinent to know that not every
artiste may want to go mainstream as long as
they are making their money in their little
region , locality or area which they lord over .


Note - There are artistes that do indigenous music
and are well known such as Zarki , Fanzy
Papaya, Sani Danja , Slow Dogg and others but
with the exceptions of artistes like Phyno ,
Flavour and maybe Timaya, the big question
remains “ how far have they gone in penetrating
the Nigerian market and African market at
large ?

When Davido Adeleke announced he was returning
back to the basics and going back to his African
style of music after being forced by Sony to do
western style of music which resulted in the coldly
received “Son of Mercy” EP, many were expectant
of the results of his new strategy.

That back tobasics strategy birthed the monster hit “IF” andbrought Davido back into the certified hit status.The song which was laced on an instrumental with snares and percussion was very melodious with its distinct kick sounds of Pon Pon and went on to
become a mega hit in the country with one of the
song lines ‘30 billion for the akant o’


Davido capitalizing on the success of IF, went
ahead to record another song similar and laced on
the Pon Pon styled instrumental and he titled it
“FALL”; FALL is doing incredibly well also. Many
noticed this trend and called out the star but he
addressed them in Olamide’s Summer Body even
shouting Pon Pon at the beginning of the track..



For Davido, Pon Pon represents the African sound
which has been termed local and despite this, he is
sticking to the local sound claiming it is paying him
more. He went ahead to diss Wizkid for his so
called western sounds claiming all other sounds
apart from the local Pon Pon sound is not relevant
and Wizkid responded that artistes either stay local
or try and move to the international scene..



Recently, Wizkid released a MasterKraft produced
track titled ‘Medicine’, a typical example of the Pon
Pon styled music taking over the industry. He
followed up with Odoo, again produced by
MasterKraft, another musical piece with the Pon Pon
instrumentation. Wizkid went as far as ensuring a
remix with Phyno and Flavour was made.
Apparently, the battle between Wizkid and Davido is
not ending anytime soon as fans have began
comparing who is killing the Pon Pon African sound
more.



It seems every body is now jumping on the Pon
Pon wave. From Tekno who claimed to be the Pon
Pon king with songs like Yawa, Rara to Mayourkun
with the smash hit Mama and the Mega smash hit
“Mad over you” by Runtown, we might just be in for
a new genre of music that will rule the Nigerian
music industry for the rest of the year and probably
next year as every artiste looks forward to dropping
a number one single and the Pon Pon styled singles
seems to be a sure way to achieve this feat.



Whoever fans stick with and whoever the Creator of
this new appealing sound is, one thing is for sure,
other artists are jumping on the Pon Pon wave and
African music is ready to take over the world. The
person pushing it matters not, the desired goal is
worldwide acceptance of our music, artistes and
culture and we are getting there.

Wiz's medicine has been on repeat since released. He killed the Igbo flow. He will reclaim his title immediately he drops the feature with Tiwa Savage.
