Are you the only union government is elected to improve its standard? You hide under canopy of fighting for students when truely you are fighting for yourselves in selfishness.

It is never by force to work as lecturers if you think the money is too small. Since you know politician are getting jumbo pay, why not go to where you know money is in politics instead of constituting nonsense into our institutions? Prof, doctors, engineers are also in politics, go and join them instead and let those young and vibrants that want to work and satisfy with the pay get recruited. After all many of you are only collecting salary without being productive.

Research that will attract funds from organizations, you can not do except publishing students' copied work, teaching, majority of lecturers can not transfer knowledge to younger generations because many of you never work in the industries for one day before comming into academic which make many of you transfer so dull knowledge to students graduating on yearly basis without basic relevant skills from so called ASSU-universities.

Now, you just want to get your own national cake by force and thereby ends up putting yourselves at ridicule. Now, to embark on another strike in the future now will attract shame and ridicule from masses. Your wings have been cut

Don't let emotions override u, u want lecturers to be carry out research without providing enabling environment for them, common light some time u have to buy fuel for generator from that little salary that u are getting. If wishes are horses, beggars too will ride. Nigerian lecturers are one of the poorest paid in the world. Despite the way that academics in Nigerian public universities are handled, their research outputs are visible in the global research database. Like Prof Amoka said: If political office holders should make one-tenth of the efforts and sacrifices made by academics in our public universities, they will be celebrated as heroes in office.


Talking of funds

Despite the horrible condition of service of academics in the country, Nigerian academics are winning research grants. An Associate professor at Bayero University Kano recently received a research grant of £969,680 from Wellcome. A senior lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria recently won a research grant of about 48,000 USD from Geophysics Without Borders. Other researchers from the Federal University Dutse won a grant of $59,930 from The World Academy of Science (TWAS) and €220,801 from the African Academy of Science on renewable energy. These are just a few of the grants won by academics within the strike period.

Foremost Nigerian constitutional lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN has insisted that registering splinter academic unions of universities will neither dismember nor disorganize the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Falana made this assertion in an interview on Arise TV’s Newsday on Wednesday.

Recall that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige on Tuesday, approved the registration of two new academic unions and ordered the newly registered unions to return to classrooms.

The two unions included the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA) and the Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA), who according to Ngige, had declared their rejection of ASUU’s modus-operandi.

But, Falana described the registration as illegal and a desperate measure by the government to break the strike.

According to Falana, ASUU has been at the forefront of sanitizing the Nigerian university system looking for funding to power the universities.

He said, “Government has tried various measures but the latest one is perhaps going to embarrass the government because it is an illegal exercise and won’t work. ASUU is today one of the most organised and united trade unions in Africa.

“Under the current Labour Law regime in Nigeria, you cannot have two unions or three unions in the same sector. In other words, within the academia in Nigeria, there can only be one registered trade union that is the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) registered pursuant to the Trade Union Act as amended,” he said.

He added that the development will result in proliferation of academic unions, adding that the economy will suffer for it.

“We are going to have to have a mushrooming of trade unions, which threatens industrial peace in the country. We cannot have two unions in the university nor can we have two unions in other unions in the country. Politically it wont work,” he said.

He advised the government to return to the drawing table and ensure that proper advice is sought in order not to expose the country to ridicule

The newly registered Congress of Nigerian Universities Academics (CONUA) has appealed to the Academic Staff Union Of Universities (ASUU), and the Federal Government to reach an “amicable agreement” so that students of public universities can return to the classrooms.

“We’ve not been on strike, we just appeal to the Federal Government and our sister union (ASUU) to reach an amicable agreement so that the universities can be open so that we can go back to doing our teachings,” CONUA National Coordinator, Niyi Sunmonu, said on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday.

The official also called for collaborative engagement among all the registered academic unions on issues of concern.

As talks between ASUU and the Federal Government broke down amid the over seven-month strike by ASUU, the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige, on Tuesday, registered two factional academic unions – CONUA and the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA).

The minister explained that the two bodies will exist alongside ASUU, adding that the two associations will enjoy the rights and privileges accorded to other academic unions in the tertiary education system.

ASUU has been on strike since February 14, 2022, over unpaid allowances, poor welfare, and payment software, among others.

‘CONUA Not On Strike But Our Members Are Not In Classrooms’
Sunmonu, a lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, in Osun State, South-West Nigeria, said CONUA was formed in 2018 after a fallout with the ASUU branch in the university over “constitutional violations” and the selection of a vice-chancellor.

According to him, CONUA first filed an application for registration in April 2018, and the union has members in 17 universities in the country.

“We expect to have more members with the recognition and registration by the Federal Government,” he said, adding that CONUA has over 600 members in OAU alone.

Sunmonu, who insisted that CONUA members have not been on strike, said his members have not been to the classrooms as students were forced out of campuses.

“CONUA as an organisation has not been on strike. There has been no time that a strike was declared,” he said.

Asked whether the ASUU strike has so far affected CONUA, he said, “ASUU is an independent union and it has no bearing over another union.

“We stopped teaching in OAU when the students were asked to vacate campuses. I had concluded all my lectures before our students were asked to leave OAU on 27th March this year.”

‘I’m Not An APC Member’
The CONUA coordinator also distanced himself from partisan politics. When asked whether he is a member of the All Progressives Congress, he said, “I am not a member of APC or any political party.”

Part of the lingering issues between ASUU and the Federal Government is the payment software. Whilst the government currently subscribes to the Integrated Payroll and Personnel information system (IPPIS), ASUU believes the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) is more efficient.

On whether CONUA is for IPPIS or UTAS, Sunmonu said there is no payment software that is foolproof, insisting that the bone of contention is the quest for a better wage structure regardless of how it is paid.

‘Our Salaries Have Not Been Paid’
The official said the salaries of CONUA members have also not been paid like their ASUU counterparts.

“Our salaries have not been paid though we have been working,” he noted.

Although he shared sentiments of underfunding of universities with ASUU, he faulted the approach of using industrial actions to press home demands. “Negatives of strike outweigh positives,” he said, stating that constructive engagements must be explored.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has asked the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government to opt for an out-of-court settlement in handling the impasse between both parties.

The court took the decision on Wednesday while hearing the appeal by ASUU over the September 21 judgement of the National Industrial Court, which ordered the university lecturers to suspend their strike action.

Lead counsel to ASUU, Mister Femi Falana (SAN) and Mister James Igwe (SAN), lead counsel to the Federal Government are all in court.

ASUU has been on strike since February 14.

In August, the union declared a “total and indefinite” extension of its industrial action, noting that the government has failed to meet its demands satisfactorily.

The academics seek improved welfare, revitalisation of public universities and academic autonomy among other demands.

One bone of contention for academics is the non-payment of university revitalisation funds, which amounts to about N1.1 trillion.

But the Federal Government has said it doesn’t have the money to pay such an amount, citing low oil prices during the Muhammadu Buhari administration
