The Niger Delta People ’s Congress on Wednesday faulted the November 1 ultimatum given by the Chief Edwin Clark -led Pan Niger Delta Forum to the Federal Government to implement its 16 - point agenda , describing the decision as “highly selfish and unpatriotic . ”
The group ’s Convener, Chief Mike Loyibo , stated this in a statement in Abuja .

Clark had at a press conference on Monday threatened that PANDEF would withdraw from the peace negotiation it was having with the Federal Government to bring lasting peace to the oil -rich region if the forum ’s demands were not met before November 1 .

But Loyibo said the threat was uncalled for considering the right steps taken so far by the Federal Government towards a permanent solution to the crisis that had bedeviled the region.

He described PANDEF as just one of the many groups in the region, saying the forum ’s decision could not be binding on everybody .

He said , “It is highly selfish and unpatriotic for the Chief E . K. Clark -led PANDEF to give the Federal Government an ultimatum considering the right steps taken so far by the government towards a permanent solution to the age - long crisis that had bedeviled the Niger Delta region.

“We are aware that the government constituted a high -powered committee chaired by the Acting President who has demonstrated so much passion and commitment towards the region.

“PANDEF is just one of the many groups in the region and its decision cannot be binding on everybody .
“There is no need for the Federal Government to negotiate with any group , rather, the Presidency should go back to the people in the host communities just the same way that the Acting President went round initially to seek their buy -in . After all , it was not PANDEF that secured peace in the region.

“They have consulted widely and a road map has already been fashioned out . The Federal Government should not allow any group to slow her down, rather immediate action should be taken to tackle already identified issues .”

Loyibo then listed some of the issues that the Federal Government must address urgently to include the relocation of oil companies ’ headquarters to the region, the maritime university, the Ogoni clean -up and the modular refineries among others .

“The oil companies should be compelled to relocate to the region as previously instructed by the Acting President . The Maritime University needs immediate action. The modular refineries should kick off immediately .

“The NDDC , as presently constituted , should not stand. The amnesty programme should be well funded , further strengthened and re -engineered . The Ogoni clean - up should go ahead and the model should be used for other neglected communities in the region.”

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Wednesday said work on the proposed expansion and reconstruction of the Oshodi -International Airport road would commence in September .
Ambode dropped the hint at the 3 rd Quarter Town Hall Meeting held at the Badore Ferry Terminal, Lagos .
He said the reconstruction of the Oshodi - International Airport road would see its transformation to a 10 -lane road .
In May , Acting President , Prof . Yemi Osinbajo, approved that the road be handed over to the Lagos State Government for total reconstruction .

Ambode said that plans were also underway to commence the construction of 181 Local Government roads in September .
The governor said the delay in the commencement of the rehabilitation of the 181 inner roads was due to the fluctuation in dollar rate at the time the bid was last opened .
“By the next two to three weeks , I will re -open the advert to get a new cost and all things being equal , the job will start on the roads by end of September , ’’ he said .
Ambode assured residents that the state Public Works would seize the period of the break in the rainy season to fix all potholes across the state in order to improve drive time for motorists.
On the Cleaner Lagos Initiative ( CLI ) , the governor urged people to be patient , as the comprehensive waste management policy was currently at gestation period.
He said once fully operational, waste would be collected in line with international best practices , while all parts of the state would be kept clean always.
Ambode , however , urged residents to adopt new attitude to waste disposal and desist from dumping in drainage and canals .
He said that the government would provide adequate bins to discourage indiscriminate dumping of waste .
Ambode said the 20 Local Government and 37 Local Council Development Area Chairmen had been mandated to ensure 24 / 7 cleaning of the environment , while officials of the State Government would be moving round to evacuate waste .
As part of the initiatives to enhance commuting within the state , Ambode said new modern bus terminals would be constructed, commencing from this quarter in Marina , Ajah , Ojota , Agege, Iju Ishaga and Iyana Ipaja .
He said a Bus Rapid Transit lane would be constructed to connect Badore Jetty to Ajah area of the state as part of the integrated transport system .
Ambode said that the Badore road would be expanded at its entrance from Ajah roundabout , while plans were underway to construct Oke - Ira Nla road as an alternative , to totally eliminate traffic along the axis .

The Majority Leader of the House of Representatives , Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, Oba of Lagos , Rilwan Akiolu I , members of the State Executive Council , members of the House of Assembly, top government functionaries, party chieftains , traditional rulers , among others were at the Town Hall meeting .

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress , Ayodele
Kusamotu, has berated the party leadership for its nonchalant attitude towards restructuring .
In a statement he signed and issued on Wednesday in Lagos , Kusamotu urged the party ’s hierarchy not to take Nigerians for granted , noting that restructuring of Nigeria is the wish of the people .
He said further that the clamour for the country to be restructured was an issue that many within the party have always called for .
According to him , the clamour will not stop even if the party leadership ignores it.
The APC chieftain pointed out that the appointment of Kaduna State Governor , Nasir el -Rufai , as the party ’s chairman of the committee on restructuring was ironic , arguing that the governor has been in full support of the restructuring .
Kusamotu urged the party to gauge the pulse of the people to avoid losing the goodwill and sympathy it enjoyed in the last general elections .
He , however , urged APC to give more attention to “internal democracy and participatory democratic process that see all card -carrying members of the party as stakeholders whose voices must be heard .”
