PoliticsUnbelievable! RCCG Supports Controversial MMM Scheme? (see This) by taiwoflb(op): 3:55pm On Oct 31, 2016
https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/ENOCH-ADEBOYE-2.jpg

A Twitter user, @EngrSeries, took to his page yesterday, Sunday, October 30, to reveal how the controversial ‘money doubling scheme’ – MMM was advertised in a Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) during the service.

According to him, the church might have done it all in the name of getting numerous referrals which means more money for the church. Read the tweet and reactions below:

https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/MMM-in-RCCG-243x300.jpg

Nawa oh, does this mean RCCG supports MMM? The entrance of Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox popularly known by its abbreviation, MMM, into the country sent Nigerians into a frenzy as many hop into the quick-money train. The company which was founded in Russia 1989 by Sergei Mavrodi, his brother Vyacheslav Mavrodi, and Olga Melnikova recorded a rapid growth but in 1994, it came crashing down as it was closed over tax evasion.

Described as the biggest Ponzi scheme in the 1990s, it was estimated that thousands of people lost up to $10 billion dollars. The scheme which has been banned in China has found its way to South Africa, Zimbabwe and recently Nigeria where it has attracted “investors” who put money into it and receive 30 per cent “profit” ant the end of the month.

People are asked to register and put in money and after 30 days, they receive a 30 per cent profit plus the invested money. Due to the larger number of people who participate, it is possible for money to circulate in a case described as robbing Peter to Pay Paul.

Do you think it is okay for a church to advertise this scheme in church?

PoliticsNigerian Army Orders 50,000 Aba-made Boots, Receives Praise by taiwoflb(op): 3:44pm On Oct 31, 2016
https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/army-boot.jpg

ABUJA – SENATE President Bukola Saraki has hailed the Nigerian Army for its decision to purchase 50,000 pairs of shoes from local manufacturers in Aba for the use of officers and soldiers. According to him, the move shows that the military was living up to its billing as an institution that can play vital roles in boosting the national economy, adding that the military’s decision to patronise Made in Nigeria footwear was a good example which shows the force as a pace setter and a truly national institution which is ready to contribute its quota in ending the present economic recession in the country.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, Saraki who is a long-time champion of the Buy Made in Nigerian campaign and has been a major supporter of the Aba local manufacturers, however urged all the other military and para-military forces like the Air Force, navy, police, civil defence corps and the National Youth Service Corps to emulate the army by immediately banning the purchase of all imported foot wears in preference for locally produced ones.Saraki who urged the military and paramilitary agencies not to limit their patronage and promotion of Made in Nigeria goods to only shoes but to other items that can be sourced locally, also praised the Air Force for the co-operation as it was forging with the Innoson Motor Group in the area of manufacturing of some air plane parts. He said, “This is the essence of the amendment of the Public Procurement Act by the Senate since June. The new law compels all Ministries, Department and Agencies of government to compulsorily give preference to goods and services which can be sourced locally.

We believe one of the gains that our country will derive from this recession is to make our people look inward and patronise locally made goods. “Patronage of Made-in-Nigeria goods is an obvious panacea for our economic problems. We will by doing that increase our Gross Domestic Product (GDP), empower our youths, challenge their creativity, increase revenue generation ability of state governments and improve on the sense of self pride and patriotism of Nigerians.”

The Senate President who advised state and federal governments to encourage local manufacturers by providing them with necessary infrastructure, soft loans, patronage and helping them to improve on the quality of their goods as well as facilitating their ability to access the export market, also implored organised groups like the National Economic Summit Group (NESG), associations in the field of marketing communications and others who can help in the areas of goods packaging, sales promotion and quality enhancement to engage the local manufacturers and see how they can help them broaden their reach and produce goods that can be sold across the world. He said, “We have an opportunity to turn our challenge to prosperity. We can create mass employment and make the private sector centre of our economy if we can make our small and medium enterprises to prosper. This is a task for all of us and this promotion of Made-in-Nigeria is a cardinal point in the Agenda of the present Senate.”

PoliticsKidnapping: Lagos To Impose Death By Hanging by taiwoflb(op): 11:14am On Oct 22, 2016
https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/suicide-hanging-knot-600x338.jpg

The Lagos State Assembly has recommended death by hanging as penalty for kidnapping in Lagos State. This was revealed yesterday when the Assembly held a public hearing on a Bill for a law to provide for the prohibition of the act of kidnapping and other connected purposes.

The bill sponsored by the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, stated that any person, who kidnaps, abducts, details or captures or takes another person by any means with intent to demand ransom or do anything against his/her will commits an offence, and is liable on conviction to death sentence. The death penalty in the Bill by the Assembly is a stiffer penalty for the 21 years imprisonment at present provided in the state criminal code.
It is not only persons found guilty of kidnapping that would be penalised, those who participated in the process or attempted kidnapping would not go unpunished, as the Bill provides that any person, who knowingly or willfully allows or permits his premises, building or a place belonging or occupied to which he has control of, to be used for the purposes of keeping a person kidnapped is guilty of an offence under the law and liable on conviction to a term of imprisonment of 14 years without an option of fine.
Also, a Chief Magistrate in Lagos State, Mrs Seri Sholebo said that it was fundamental to add conspiracy to kidnapping, disclosing that convicting offenders on the basis of conspiracy since 2011 had been a herculean task.

Meanwhile, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has said that to win the war against terrorism in Nigeria would require collaborative efforts among the citizens and strong synergy among security agencies.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, right, welcomes the President of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari, left, for talks at the chancellery in Berlin, Friday, Oct. 14, 2016.. (Rainer Jensen, dpa via AP)Nigeria and Germany have enjoyed excellent relationship for 158 years. Nigeria is Germany’s most important business partner in Africa. German economy is the biggest economy in Europe while Nigeria is the biggest market in Africa- a marriage made in heaven. In the period of economic recession, Nigeria needs all the help she can get.

President Muhammadu Buhari, since assumption of office on May 29 last year, has enjoyed excellent relationship with world leaders. Recall that last year, he was invited to the United States by President Barack Obama in the first two months of his swearing in.Also, after his inauguration on May 29, 2015, President Buhari, on the invitation of Chancellor Merkel, attended the G7 summit in Elmau, Germany – the trip was his first to a non-African country after his assumption of office.

From February 8 to 12 this year, President Gauck, accompanied by a delegation of German business community, was on an official visit to Nigeria, where they had fruitful discussions on trade and investments with representatives of government and the private sector in Abuja and Lagos.

So it was no surprise when Merkel invited President Buhari to a state visit to Germany, a rarity for African leaders.

In Berlin, President Buhari, was expected to confer with Federal Chancellor, Angela Merkel on issues of shared interests between Nigeria and Germany, including further cooperation on security, the humanitarian situation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and rehabilitation of the North-East, as well as trade and economic relations between both countries.

On the first day of the trip, President Buhari achieved a major milestone when Germany pledged 18billion euros for the revival of Lake Chad. It will be recalled during many of his foreign trips, Buhari had called challenged world leaders on Lake Chad revival.
According to the United Nations, at least nine million people are in urgent need of aid in the Lake Chad basin.

The UN Regional Humanitarian Coordinator, Toby Lanzer, said at least $559 million would be needed in the next four months to ease the crisis in Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon and Chad.

He said more than six million people were “severely food insecure” with 568,000 children acutely malnourished adding that the UN has appealed to Britain and other western governments for help.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) had also warned of the worsening condition of children around the Lake Chad, who face acute malnutrition.

The UN Agency explained that of the 475,000 deemed at risk, 49,000 in Borno State would die if they do not receive treatment.

Even during his trip to the United States General Assembly in September, President Buhari called for global support to raise 14 billion US Dollars for the restoration of Lake Chad Basin.

He said the call had become imperative, in view of the drying up of the Lake Chad, to the negative consequences of climate change.

He said, “Nigeria is proud to have been part of the process leading to the adoption of the Paris Agreement in December 2015, and supports the African Union Initiative on the Great Green Wall to halt desertification.’’

So it was music to the president’s ears when Merkel pledged 18 billion Euros, more than what is needed to revive the Lake Chad. A major coup.

The Chancellor of Germany said her country has earmarked the amount of 18 billion Euros for the recharging of the Lake Chad through the diversion of rivers in the Congo Basin to empty their waters into the lake.

Both the German leader and President Buhari said they have marked this project as one of their priorities.

Angela Merkel made this announcement at a joint Press Conference with President Muhammadu Buhari following bilateral talks in Berlin.

President Buhari, who made a strong pitch for the recharging of the Lake in bilateral talks with the German leader in the course of an ongoing state visit, said that the drying up of the lake has put the 30 million people in the Lake Chad basin area in danger of being forced to leave.

President Buhari linked the emergence and spread of the Boko Haram terrorism as well as the increasing number of illegal migrations to Europe from Africa to joblessness, starvation and poverty, arising from climate change as manifested by the drying up of the lake.

Speaking at the press conference, the German leader disclosed that “The Lake Chad region is a great priority to us, Nigeria is part and parcel of that. In terms of cooperation, we said we will earmark 18 billion for Lake Chad region area and 50 billion for the overall areas.”

President Buhari welcomed the German offer of skills and vocational training of Nigeria’s teeming unemployed, training and provision of equipment and intelligence to combat criminality and terrorism in the North-East; the vandalisation of oil infrastructure in the Niger Delta region and frequent clashes between herdsmen and farmers.

The president also acknowledged the more than 100 German firms in the Nigerian economy and thanked Chancellor Markel for her encouragement of more of such firms to invest in Nigeria.

The German leader commended the progress Nigeria has made in fighting crime, terrorism and corruption and promised continued consultation and closer bilateral cooperation.

Chancellor Merkel expressed concern that the annual illegal migration of 20,000 Nigerians to Germany had become a major issue that needs to be addressed, especially given the fact that emigrants were mostly unqualified for asylum under their own laws.

“We also talked about the migration partnership with the European Union, the EU wants to negotiate migration with Nigeria, my point in this is that we need to see to it that human traffickers are out or business, we have to strengthen legal migration to also create jobs in Nigeria, job possibilities for vocational training, possibilities in education,” said the Chancellor.

On the Chibok girls, Buhari said; we have been able to secure the release of 21 of them, so over 100 more are still in the hands of the terrorists somewhere in the Lake Chad Basin area which include Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria.

“In getting this 21 out, we hope we will get enough intelligence to go about securing the rest of them.”
“We are very grateful to the UN for their participation in trying to secure the release of these girls.”

“Please don’t forget that as a result of terrorism in Nigeria, no fewer than 37,000 Nigerians were killed by Boko Haram.”

“Right now, we have about two million people in IDP camps, 60 per cent of them are women and children and 60 per cent of those children are orphaned.”

“This is a major challenge for government; we have to provide face infrastructure especially for education and health, take them back to their villages and towns and reintegrate them so that they can have normal lives,’’ he said.

The president thanked the German government for their humanitarian assistance and support for Nigeria in dealing with the effects of terrorism.

Meanwhile, President Buhari that same day, after meeting with Merkel, declared that a new bank, Development Bank of Nigeria, would soon begin operations to strengthen the government’s economic diversification programme.

Addressing the German-Nigeria Business Forum in Berlin, President Buhari said the bank, when fully operational, will support small and medium enterprises in the country, by improving their access to financing.

“Our ambitions of creating a diversified and inclusive economy in Nigeria can only be achieved by having a mix of small, medium and large businesses.

“This is why we worked with the German development agency, KFW, in designing the Development Bank of Nigeria which will support the small and medium size enterprises both financially and technically to ensure they take their rightful place in the industrialisation value chain.

“I am pleased to announce that Development Bank of Nigeria will be taking off soon and should be a game changer in our economic diversification plans,’’ he said.

President Buhari, who described Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into Nigeria from Germany as modest, urged prospective investors at the gathering to go beyond the expressions of interest and make binding commitments for trade, investments and industry in the key priority sectors of Agriculture, infrastructure, solid minerals and digital economy.

He said Nigeria, which recorded a trade volume of 2.96 billion Dollars with Germany in 2015, still had a great deal of unexploited potential and room to diversify its exports to Germany and increase overall trade volumes.

According to the president, trade relations between both countries primarily take the form of oil and gas exports from Nigeria, machinery, vehicles and vehicle parts, telecommunications technology and chemical products in the other direction.

“Nigeria has remained a country of potential. Now we are in a hurry to develop and realise that potential.”

“Nigeria is not yet where we would like it to be, but I am confident that the government and people of Nigeria are determined to make a CHANGE and be where we would like Nigeria to be.”

“A major economy, that is subject to good governance on the basis of the rule of law and constitutional order and a responsible member of the international community,’’ he said.

President Buhari, who had earlier met with the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel and President Joachim Gauck, told the business gathering that with the successes recorded in the fight against terrorism and the administration’s resolute commitment to the war against corruption, Nigeria is open for business and broader relationship with Germany.

On corruption, he said: “we have boldly set out to bring an end to a culture of impunity and abuse of public trust. Corruption is the reason why we went through years of an oil boom and came out with very little to show in terms of savings or investments.”

“Corruption is the reason our military struggled for so long against Boko Haram. Corruption is one of the reasons that in spite of our rich human and natural resources as a country, 70 percent of our population continues to live in poverty.”

“Now we have said enough is enough. It is time to make public funds work for the public good. And that is why we are bringing culprits to book and recovering looted funds and assets.”

Also speaking in an interactive session in Berlin with representatives of the Nigerian Community in Germany, President Buhari said his administration will reciprocate the gesture by strengthening critical institutions needed for sustainable development and prosperity.

The president said his administration is greatly encouraged by the uncommon support from Nigerians in the fight against corruption, as well as initiatives aimed at stimulating the economy.

“We are working hard to empower our institutions especially our educational institutions.”

“If you educate a person, that is the best you can do for him but if not, you make him susceptible to religious, ethnic, negative thinking and action.”

“Nigerians are virtually supporting us in our fight against corruption, security and the economy. He referred to “Rolls Royces,” recently discovered in the homes of certain government officials, as a clear reference of the rot in society and the fact that the war against corruption in the country is working.

“There are things that are happening, which if such had happened before, there would have been major riot, like the removal of subsidy on fuel,’’ he said.

President Buhari told Nigerians in the diaspora that it was regrettable that over the years, oil marketers had colluded with banks to defraud Nigeria of much needed revenue from the commodity.

“One third of the activities of the oil marketers are fraudulent, you can see how some of us Nigerians are wicked.”

“They just take the money, stamp some papers without bringing the product and this fraudulent activity was between bankers and businessmen,’’ he said.

The president therefore declared that his administration will continue to “to be very hard on corruption’’, in addition to encouraging more Nigerians to pay their tax.

“If you work hard and get your money, we will try and see how much tax you can pay us, but to take money from government and get away with it, no more,’’ the said.

The president used the occasion of his interaction with Nigerians to underscore the importance of his three-day visit to Germany, the largest economy in Europe, noting that he was upbeat on improved trade ties between both countries because of new investment incentives offered by Nigeria.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s intense busy three-day official visit to Germany ended on a compassionate note with his convoy veering off its way back to the airport in Berlin, to visit a Nigerian military officer receiving treatment in a Berlin hospital.

The military officer, Brigadier-General Mohammed Sani Aliyu, the Acting Commander of the 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, Jos miraculously survived a ghastly road accident in the course of a duty tour in the North-East.

The head of Training and Operations of the Nigerian Army, Major-General Yusha’u Abubakar, who was in the same vehicle was not as lucky because he died in the auto crash on Maiduguri-Damaturu road.

President Buhari, accompanied by the governors of Borno and Imo, the National Security Adviser (NSA), the Minister of Interior and that of Foreign Affairs congratulated General Aliyu for the progress he has made in his treatment in the last six months in hospital.
The president and his delegation wished him a quick recovery and an early return to his family and duties in Nigeria. He gave a further assurance that his administration will continue to accord priority to the health and wellbeing of service personnel.

Doctors said General Aliyu could barely move his head when he was stretchered in, with the rest of the body torn and broken in many parts. Now, he can move around with very little assistance.

CultureSo Here’s The Real Reason New Oba Of Benin Was Covering His Mouth by taiwoflb(op): 5:00pm On Oct 21, 2016

Yesterday, Oba Ewuare ll N’Ogidigan ascended the revered throne of his ancestors to become the 39th Oba of Benin, succeeding his late father, Omo n’Oba n’Edo Uku Akpolopkolo, Oba Erediauwa.

The photo below of the newly coronated Oba puzzled many people.
Why was the Oba covering his mouth? It was obviously a cultural act but what was the significance? Even his wives covered their mouths.

https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/new-oba-and-his-wives-covering-their-mouths-300x198.jpg

I did some investigation and found out the following:

The Oba usually covers his mouth because when he talks he is the supreme authority. Whatever he says is final.

People talk on his behalf most of the time and whatever they proclaim becomes the Law with immediate effect.

A friend of mine who is a painter said he did a painting of the old Oba and it was rejected because it depicted him smiling. According to tradition, people are not supposed to see the Oba’s teeth so he doesn’t smile.

His wives covered their mouths as a sign of submission.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has approved the payment of bursary and local scholarship to Lagos State indigenes in tertiary institutions across the country.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh, who made the announcement to journalists on Monday, said the bursary would be for fresh beneficiaries and others receiving subsequent payment. He listed the beneficiaries to include 2015/2016 set and other sets receiving second and third payments for the years 2013/2014 and 2014/2015.

While stressing the commitment of the State Government to sustain the scholarship and bursary scheme in spite of the economic situation of the country, Bank-Olemoh said the Governor is committed to ensuring Lagosians are empowered through education to contribute productively to the local and global economies.

He further said that “the timely release of the awards demonstrates the priority the administration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode accords to educating its citizens”.

Giving a breakdown of the payment, the Executive Secretary of Lagos State Scholarship Board, Mr. Steven Oshinowo, explained that the State Government would disburse Two Hundred and Fifty Million, Five Hundred and Twenty-Three Thousand, Two Hundred and Eighty-Seven Naira and Ninety-Nine kobo (N250, 523, 287.99) to Six Thousand, Three Hundred and Sixty (6,368) beneficiaries as Bursary Award.

He also disclosed that One Hundred and Thirty Million, One Hundred and Sixty-six Thousand, Three Hundred and Eighty-six Naira Fifty-six kobo (N130, 166, 386.56) in Local Scholarships will be disbursed to Five Hundred and Seventy-three (573) successful candidates who took part in the 2015/2016 Local Scholarship Computer Based Screening test.

These sums, according to him, would accommodate the backlog of outstanding bursary and scholarship payments, as well as current awards for fresh and subsequent beneficiaries.

The Executive Secretary urged the beneficiaries to exercise patience as disbursement of the funds will commence in three weeks, at which time beneficiaries would be invited to present relevant documentation to receive their bursary or scholarship awards.

It will be recalled that earlier this year, over 689 bursary beneficiaries of 2011/2012 set, were paid along with 60 students from the School of the Blind and 54 others on Sport Scholarship.

In 2015, the State government also paid N660 million to over 8,567 indigent beneficiaries for bursary, local and foreign Scholarships.

CrimeEse Oruru: Parents Lament Daughter’s Absence From School, Police Custody by taiwoflb(op): 7:50pm On Oct 17, 2016
https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Ese-Yunusa.jpg

Parents of Ese Oruru, the 14-year-old minor allegedly abducted in Bayelsa and forced into marriage in Kano, on Monday lamented her absence from school.

The aggrieved parents said they were no longer comfortable with their daughter’s continuous stay in police protective custody, which they described as uncomfortable for a nursing mother and her baby. The Federal High Court sitting in Yenagoa adjourned Ese’s case to December 8.

But the parents of the minor described as ironic denying their daughter her freedom through protective custody while the accused person roamed the streets on bail.

They insisted that their daughter had been denied freedom under the guise of protection.

They complained that Ese and her baby were not properly catered for in their protective custody.

Ese has been at the Police Officers’ Mess, Yenagoa, even after she gave birth to a baby girl on May 25, 2016.

Yunusa Dahiru, her alleged abductor, has been standing trial at the court for criminal abduction, illicit sex, sexual exploitation and unlawful carnal knowledge of the minor.

Speaking in Yenagoa, Mr. Charles Oruru, the father of Ese said he was sad that her daughter and the new baby were confined in the officers’ mess.

He lamented that Ese was supposed to be in school adding that her daughter had lost a school year following the saga.

He said: “My daughter has been yearning and even crying to go back to school as her classmates are now ahead of her, she has lost a whole year to this saga and she is still in Police protective custody while the accused person is enjoying freedom on bail.

“I am begging the Delta State Government, Nigeria and the world at large to come to our aide.

“Nowadays without education one is going to nowhere, so she is not doing anything in their custody, while the accused move freely and she is suffering there.

“I have called on the Delta govt. to assist because I have five children which Ese is the second to the last child, so my state should come to my family aide”.

Also, speaking, Rose, the mother of Ese said her daughter lacked the proper care expected of a nursing mother.

She said the expected psychological attention and nutritional care available in homely environment were missing at the police mess.

She said: “People from Bayelsa have been assisting us and even the police officers, we want to leave there to our house because the place (Police Officers Mess) is not a good place to stay and bring up a new born baby.

“We are just abandoned in a room that we are not even allowed to go out. We stay with our trash bin which is smelling. We and the new born baby are compelled to breathe the offensive smell.

“So the world should note that we are being marginalise for no reason, as the boy Yunusa is still owing me some money after taken my daughter to Kano to impregnate her for me”.

Dare devil cultists on Thursday night snatched the pilot vehicle of the Cross River State deputy governor, Prof Ivara Esu, shooting the driver and a policeman dead in the process, The Nation gathered on Friday.

The incident happened along Goldie Street opposite the NNPC filling station in Calabar at about 7pm, when the pilot vehicle ran into a group of heavily armed cultists who were marching along the streets in the area. The state capital has been under siege since last Sunday following a renewed clash between rival cult groups in the city. PoliticsAbia LG Polls: APGA Faults Absiec’s N500,000 Charge For Chairmanship Candidates by taiwoflb(op): 5:38pm On Oct 14, 2016
https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/APGA.png

The All Progressives Grand Alliance [APGA], Abia State chapter has faulted the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission [ABSIEC]’s decision to collect N500,000 and N200,000 from chairmanship and councillorship candidates in the December 17 Local Government election in the state slated for 17th of December this year.

The party also condemned the additional N15,000 administration fee to be paid across by candidates which the Abia electoral umpire, saying that it mere robbery of the already impoverished politicians in the state. The stand of the party was contained in a release signed by its state chairman, Rev Augustine Ehiemere. APGA said collecting such huge amounts when possible candidates would have paid for their nomination forms to their respective political parties was bizarre and does not draw any exemplary precedent from its parent body, INEC.

APGA equally frowned at the timing of the election which it said negates the sensitivity of Abians who are mostly Christians and attaches great religious importance to Christmas and would have been at their respective home towns when any possible rerun would hold on December 28.

The release reads in part: “That during the formal briefing involving the political parties and the press organized by ABSIEC on the forthcoming LG election, APGA applauded ABSIEC for coming up with the idea of LG election, but frowned at the suddenness of the arrangements which might impede the effectiveness, the transparency and the participation of both the contestants and voters”.

“That since voters registers to be used for the election are going to come from INEC as publicly admitted by ABSIEC, we feel it makes both legal and moral sense for ABSIEC to wait for INEC to update the voters’ registers before proceeding with the election”.

“That ABSIEC’s decision to commence the election on the December 17 and hold possible run offs on December 28 negates the sensitivity of Abians who are mostly adherents of the Christian faith who attach great religious importance to Christmas and would possibly be in their respective home towns to celebrate the Christmas during the time under review”.

“That ABSIEC decision to collect the sum of N500,000 from chairmanship candidates and N200, 000 from councillorship candidates, and N15,000 administrative fee when the possible candidates would have paid for their nomination forms to their respective political parties is bizarre to us as it does not draw any exemplary precedent from its parent body INEC”.

APGA said it was worried by ABSIEC’s declaration that results of the chairmanship election would be announced at the LG headquarters a day after the election instead of the same day of the poll and stated that this would create room for manipulation.

PoliticsAdegboruwa Urges Judges, Lawyers To Go On Strike by taiwoflb(op): 5:29pm On Oct 14, 2016
https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Ebun-Olu-Adegboruwa.jpg

A Lagos-based lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, says given the position of the National Judicial Council on the arrest of seven judges last weekend, all judges, lawyers and court workers in the country ought to immediately boycott the courtrooms.

He said the explanation by the NJC had made it obvious that the President Muhammadu Buhari’s government does not need the courts.Adegboruwa said he recalled that Buhari had once said the judiciary was his headache, while the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, had also taken the same position.

Adegboruwa said this in a statement on Friday, that with the Department of State Services’ raid on judges, the executive had now cowed the judiciary and Nigerians should forget about getting fair hearing in court.

According to him, the outcome of the Edo State Election Petition Tribunal was already predetermined as no judge would ever rule against the ruling All Progressive Congress for fear of clampdown.

In the light of this, Adegboruwa called on the Nigerian Bar Association, judges and court workers to boycott the courtrooms.

He said, “Given the revelations that have emerged from the NJC, my humble cry is to the Nigerian Bar Association, the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria and indeed all judicial officers across Nigeria, to close down the courts.

“In the light of the emerging facts, this regime does not need the courts at all. What it desires is a situation whereby suspects are sent to jail without trial and once government has raised any allegation, regardless of the actual and true facts, the victim stands condemned.

“So, judges and courts are not needed at all. The President said so. The EFCC chairman said so, that the judiciary has been a headache.

“What the sting operation sought to and has indeed achieved is to place judicial officers under some terror, harassment, fear and indeed intimidation. Citizens will not be entitled to fair trial any longer and truly innocent people will now be sent to jail, since that is the preference of the government, that will be the only way judges can be free from harassment.

“And we should be able to predict the outcome of the Edo State Election Petitions Tribunal already.”

He said it was only God that could help Nigeria as the government had no concrete plan to take the country out of recession and address the suffering and poverty that Nigerians were going through.‎

Car Talk11 Killed In CAR Clashes by taiwoflb(op): 6:27pm On Oct 06, 2016
https://nignews.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/auto-crash-265x135.png

At least 11 people were killed in clashes in Central African Republic’s capital this week.

The clashes were set off by the murder of an army officer, the country’s United Nation’s peacekeeping mission said on Thursday.

Fighting erupted in Bangui’s PK5 neighbourhood, a Muslim enclave in the majority Christian nation’s capital, after Commander Marcel Mombeka, a former aide to ex-President Catherine Samba-Panza, was shot dead in his car on Tuesday.

Reuters reported that Central African Republic has been plagued by inter-religious violence since 2013 when mainly Muslim Seleka fighters seized power, prompting reprisals from Christian militias, known as anti-balaka.

“At this stage we think (the victims) are all civilians, excluding the army officer who was killed first,” said UN mission spokesman, Herve Verhoosel.

“14 people are still missing and another 14 were wounded.”

A mother decided to take matters into her hands by dragging her son to court over a bad habit he acquired.

The woman identified as Glory Ndlovu, took her son to court, and asked them to put out a court order preventing him from masturbating.

Taylor Karakadzi’s mother took him to court for masturbation

Ndlovu took 26-year-old Taylor Karakadzai to court because according to her, his frequent masturbation was causing more harm than good. She said he was fond of leaving the toilet dirty for her to clean up after him, and she was tired of taking care of his mess.

The woman who hails from Nkulumane suburb in Bulawayo of Zimbabwe, said:

“I am applying for a protection order against my son who always locks himself in the toilet masturbating leaving it dirty with his sperms all over. I’m tired of cleaning his dirt.”

She also told the court that she was once beaten up by her son because she complained about his dirty habit, and he had spent one year and six months in jail, but had come out worse. She said:

“But still (after jail release) his behaviour has not changed. We use two rooms and he sleeps in the kitchen. If I try to wake him up he becomes angry and only wakes up around midday.”

The court ended up granting Ndlovu the order she wanted.

PoliticsLili Gabari Dies At 86 by taiwoflb(op): 4:46pm On Oct 05, 2016
A renowned Kano politician Alhaji Lili Gabari is dead.
Late Gabari died in Kano yesterday after a protracted illness.

Aged 86, the late Gabari was an activist of the defunct Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU) and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and most recently the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Late Gabari was a member of the House of Representatives from Jahun/Aujara federal constituency under the defunct NEPU.
He also served as advisor on Assembly Matters to the former Kano state governor, late Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi.

Alhaji Hamza Darma, the deceased’s nephew who announced the death, said the funeral prayer was conducted at the deceased’s residence in Kabuwaya quarters, Kano city, at 4pm.

Speaking on his early political life, Alhaji Tanko Salihu Yakasai, a political associate to the deceased, said late Lili Gabari was among the few politicians that financed the activities of NEPU.

“He was a groundnut dealer who contributed financially to the activities of NEPU. He was among the few people that sacrificed their lives and resources to free the common man from the bondage of slavery in this country. He also fought for the nation’s independence,” Yakasai said, adding that Gabari’s contributions to the development of politics were enormous.

He said the death of the politician was a huge loss and getting a replacement for people like him would be a difficult task in this era.

PoliticsBuhari Rejects N1.7tr Ransom For Chibok Girls by taiwoflb(op): 12:59pm On Oct 05, 2016
https://nigerianewsonline.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/President-Muhammadu-Buhari-2016-777x437.jpg

President ‘didn’t foil 1985 coup despite hint’

Boko Haram demanded from the Federal Government €5billion (about N1,706,850,000,000) to free 219 Chibok girls . The Euro exchanged for approximately N341.37 last night.
President Muhammadu Buhari allegedly got wind of the August 27, 1985 coup d’état against him as a military Head of State but he did not foil it to avoid executing some senior Army officers.

These facts are contained in the book, “Muhammadu Buhari: The challenges of leadership in Nigeria”, authored by Prof. John Paden.

The book, which was presented to the public on Monday at the International Conference Centre in Abuja, contained some unknown issues about the President.

But the insider’s account on the botched negotiation between Boko Haram and the Federal Government provided fresh insights into the plight of the Chibok girls.

Some excerpts from the book are: “An additional issue was the status of the Chibok girls. Secret negotiations had been held regarding an exchange of Boko Haram prisoners for the girls.

“On several occasions, prisoners were taken to Maiduguri to facilitate an exchange. But these negotiations stalled when Boko Haram demanded a ransom of €5billion for the girls.

“The dilemma for the DSS, which was handling the negotiations, was that a military assault to rescue the girls would almost certainly result in their deaths at the hands of their Boko Haram captors.

“But the Nigerian government was not going to accede to Boko Haram’s extra-ordinary demand for a vast sum of money which would no doubt be used to fund future attacks.

“One or two girls were able to escape their captors in May, but the rest remained captive and the impasse continued

“The Chibok girls were not alone in their grim fate. Hundreds if not thousands, of persons had been captured by Boko Haram in the North-East. Buhari would need to continue degrading Boko Haram until he could tighten the noose around its Sambisa hideouts and bring a close end to this painful episode.”

On why Buhari placed his ministers on lower salaries and allowances, the author said the President wanted to make ministerial appointment less attractive as a way of curbing corruption in public office.

He went on: “Buhari was trying to eliminate the allure of ministerial appointments as a means of accruing wealth either through receiving a generous salary or through exploiting power for corrupt personal gain.

“Of course, the effort to combat corruption also required creating disincentives for corrupt practices strong enough to dissuade ministers from ‘chopping’ on the side. The penalty if caught would be dismissal and public shaming.”

Concerning the arrest of a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, the author said the ties between the President and ex-Prime Minister David Cameron made it possible.

“Yet the close ties between Buhari and British (former) Prime Minister David Cameron facilitated efforts to launch a coordinated effort to bring money launderers to book, as demonstrated in the role of the London Metropolitan Police in the case of Diezani Alison-Madueke.”

The National Crime Agency (NCA) in the UK arrested and quizzed Mrs Alison-Madueke and four others on October 2, 2015 for alleged bribery and corruption and money laundering.

Also the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has interrogated between three and five more suspects since Mrs Alison-Madueke’s interrogation by the NCA.

The same NCA had last year obtained permission from a Westminster Magistrate’s Court to seize £27,000 from Mrs Alison-Madueke and two other women.

Regarding the counter-coup of August 27, 1985 which led to Buhari’s removal as a military Head of State and the emergence of ex-President Ibrahim Babangida, the author said the President knew a plot was coming but he did not want to shed blood.

The book reads: “The question has arisen subsequently as to whether Buhari knew about the countercoup in advance.

“Given his ‘appreciation’ of complex situations, it is argued by some, how could he not have known? Some of those closest to Buhari at the time have subsequently argued that he did know a countercoup was coming. They insist that Buhari calculated that to preempt this plan would have meant executing six or eight senior officers. This he was unwilling to do.”

The book explained that Buhari was detained after the 1985 coup in Akure and Benin from August 27, 1985 to December 1988.

The book states: “Babangida also tried to look for ways to indict Buhari personally, but his integrity and grassroots popularity helped protect him.

“After the Babangida countercoup, three of the ministers were retained. Babangida also set up the Aboyade probe into the finances of Buhari and some key ministers but the investigators could find no evidence of any personal aggrandisement on his part during his term as Head of State.

“Significantly, the three ministers retained from the previous administration by Babangida-Lukman, Bali and David-West— strongly defended the integrity of Buhari and his close associates, and no charges were ever brought against Buhari.

“Meanwhile, Buhari had been taken from Lagos by plane to Akure in Ondo State. After a few months in Akure, he was taken to Benin City in the south of the country, where he would stay under house arrest until his release in December 1988.”

Nairaland GeneralMuslim Cleric Docked For Beating, Threatening To Bathe Pastor With Acid by taiwoflb(op): 12:29pm On Oct 05, 2016

For allegedly threatening to bathe a pastor with acid and destroying his church, a 40-year-old Muslim cleric, Saheed Gbadamosi, was on Tuesday hauled up before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
A resident of Aboru area of Iyana-Ipaja, a Lagos suburb, Gbadamosi, is being tried for breach of peace, assault and threat to life.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. George Nwosu, the accused committed the offences on Sept. 4 at his residence. He said the accused with others still at large conspired and assaulted Pastor Emmanuel Ugbo by beating him, destroying church property and threatening to pour acid on him.
“The accused and his accomplices beat up the complainant and damaged four chairs valued at N4,000 and mixer valued at N35,000 being church property.

“The accused and others also threatened to bathe him with acid if he refused to stop converting his `clients’ to his church.”

Nwosu said the accused stormed the complainant’s church with hoodlums armed with different types of dangerous weapons and attacked the complainant.

“The complainant was in the fellowship with his members when the accused stormed the church with hoodlums carrying iron rods, sticks and other dangerous weapons.

“The accused obstructed the complainant from performing his duty as a pastor by chasing away all his members before descending on him,” he told the court.

The offences, Nwosu said, contravened Sections 56, 166, 170 and 348 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. The accused may be sentenced to a minimum of three years imprisonment on conviction, according to the Criminal Law.

BOOK LAUNCH ON PRESIDENT BUHARI 4A&B. L-R; President of Niger Mr Mahamadou Issoufou, President of Tchad, Idriss Deby, Wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, President Muhammadu Buhari, former Head of State, Dr Yakubu Gowon, Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and one other during a book launch on President Muhammadu Buhari tittle: The Challenges of Leadership in Nigeria by Mr John N Paden held at the International Conference Centre in Abuja. PHOTO; SUNDAY AGHAEZE. OCT 3 2016.
All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Tinubu yesterday described President Muhammadu Buhari as “a true democrat”.

He spoke in Abuja during the public presentation of a book entitled: “Muhammadu Buhari – The Challenges of Leadership in Nigeria”.
Tinubu, one of the reviewers of the book, also described Buhari as a disciplined and focused person right from his youthful days.

The former Lagos State Governor said Buhari was in haste to bring change as a young leader, but as an older leader, Buhari “is now slow and steady”.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon and former United States Ambassador to Nigeria John Campbell also eulogised the President.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and his wife Dolapo, Senate President Bukola Saraki and his wife Toyin, Speaker of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara and his wife, former Vice President Namadi Sambo, APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun attended the ceremony.

There were also Presidents Idris Deby of Chad, President Patrice Talon of Benin Republic and President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger.

Presidents of Cameroon and Equitorial Guinea sent representatives.

Tinubu said: “Essentially, the book explores how his professional career, his personal life and prior experiences in government shaped and prepared him for the momentous assignment he now has.

“From the book’s pages, we see a man who has lived his life on assignments that always intersected with vital moments in the nation’s history. He was a man on assignment, when, in the military, he served bravely in a civil war to keep Nigeria united.

“He was on national assignment when he became military head of state in a well-intentioned effort to straighten things out, and set Nigeria on a better path.

“When he ventured into politics and competed for the Presidency, culminating in his 2015 election victory, he was still on assignment, showing that there was no other way for this nation to go but the way of democracy, no matter how difficult the path may be.

“Now, as sitting President, he is on an assignment, against time, to undo the wrongs of nearly two decades of bad governance.

“Such is the life of this man. Always in the public eye, doing things in his different, disciplined and Spartan way. From this compelling narrative, neatly demarcated into three parts and 24 chapters, the reader is able to glean the quintessential Buhari.”

According to him, the book makes an educative and informative reading as he called for re-introduction of history as a subject in Nigerian schools.

“The book is a timely narrative. Apart from being a senior officer to Buhari, Tinubu said Gen. Theophilus Danjuma and Buhari enjoyed a professional and personal friendship unparalleled in Nigeria’s history.

“His words confirm that Buhari was a man prepared for leadership ahead of a time like this.

“The formation of the All Progressives Congress, APC, is an important event that the book addresses. The merger was the result of teamwork, belief in the democratic will of the people and a commitment to national purpose.

“Many of us invested ourselves, our heart, body, mind and soul in this project for national salvation. Many did not want it to happen and fought to undermine the good we sought to accomplish. Many others straddled the sidelines, neither completely in nor completely out, but waiting to see how the prevailing winds might blow before making their move.

“Muhammadu Buhari never wavered for one moment on this journey. Proving to be a focused leader, he acted with single-minded determination that showed no fear or doubt in the rightfulness of the cause we pursued.

“So many people made contributions that made the historic merger possible. It would be impossible to give each person the accolades they deserve in a concise work such as this one. However, it is an account that we must begin to chronicle fully, and with care, for it is the story of when reform came to the land.

According to him, the founding fathers of the APC had three challenges while forming the ‘new’ party.

The first challenge, he said, was learning the right lessons from the aborted attempt at political cooperation in 2011.

“Talks mainly between the CPC, led by Buhari, and the ACN, led by myself, later joined by the ANPP and the progressive wing of APGA, would go more smoothly and would reach the desired finish-line this time. There would be a merger and there would be a presidential candidate agreeable to all. A winning combination had been joined.

”It would give the PDP, which had boasted of 60 continuous years in power, more than it could handle. After the successful merger and the birth of APC, it was time to pick a flag bearer. At the Lagos convention, President Buhari emerged as the new party’s choice in a transparently-honest process. His speech to the convention was greeted with ovation, even by those who had opposed him.

”This set the tone for the campaign to come. But first, there was the sticky issue of selecting a running mate. After careful study and discussion, it was agreed that we should field a religiously-balanced ticket given the sensitivities of the moment.

”Based on this conclusion, the name of Yemi Osinbajo, renowned law professor and former Lagos State Attorney-general during my tenure as governor, was proposed as an excellent running mate.

“Osinbajo was also a pastor in the largest church in the entire country, and this would answer those who wrongfully tried to paint Buhari as intolerant.”

Noting that President Buhari made three electoral promises on Security, Corruption and Employment, Tinubu said: “On security, success has been recorded in decimating Boko Haram. On corruption and the rule of law, Buhari continues to plough new ground.”

Another reviewer of the book, Prof Ibrahim Gambari, challenged APC governors to replicate the change mantra in their states.

“We must support Buhari so that we can take our country back from the enemies, the looters,” he said

The Special Guest of Honour, former President Obasanjo said that the book confirmed what he knew about Buhari but didn’t represent a definitive assessment of the President.

Gen. Gowon, who is the chairman of the occasion, said Buhari fought many battles to get to where he is today.

“He deserves every word of praise today,” he said.

The President of Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mrs Nike Akande, said Nigerian business community remained grateful to President Buhari for the establishment of the Presidential Enabling Business Environment under the chairmanship of Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.

This, she said, was a clear demonstration of the Buhari-led administration’s resolve to fix the investment climate issues in the economy and enhance private sector competitiveness.

”He has given Nigeria a leadership that the country deserves at this critical moment of our history. In the last 16 months, Nigeria’s image has improved internationally,” she added.

The author, Prof. Paden, described the book as an attempt to introduce Buhari to the international audience since Nigerians already knew who Buhari is.

He said: “This book seeks to answer the questions: who’s President Buhari and how he’s grappling with the many challenges of Nigeria. My initial motivation was to introduce President Buhari to the international audience on the assumptions that Nigerians already knew their president.

“But increasingly, I came to feel that, perhaps, Nigerians might find it useful to review. I also wanted to address the issue of leadership.

“In the past, one such period was the civil war, another was the time of influx of petroleum dollars. The book follows Buhari through his challenges in and out of the office, his military training in the UK and elsewhere, his roles in military regime, including his time as military head of state for 20 months, his detention, his reemergence as a civil society leader and his eventual engagement in politics in the Fourth Republic since 1999.”

President Issoufou, who spoke in French, also lauded the efforts of President Buhari’s administration in fighting Boko Haram to a standstill.

If you've ever heard that ladies do rape guys too and you never believed, this will convince you. A video is currently going viral on the Nigerian social media showing two girls attempting to rape a guy. This reportedly happened in South Africa. The video is quite confusing.

The two girls seemed to be forcing themselves on the guy...with one trying to get him aroused so the other one can mount him. You can see the other lady holding his hands down. What we don't understand is why he was allowing it to happen. He should be strong enough to get them off him or maybe he was drugged and made weak? Disgusting women.
