PoliticsKatsina Govt Denies Destroying Church by taiwoflb(op): 12:28pm On Jan 12, 2015
The Katsina State Inter-faith Committee has denied the destruction of a church in Matazu Local Government Area by the Katsina Urban and Regional Planning Development Authority (KURPDA).

The chairman of the committee, Isah Dodo, made the denial on Saturday in Matazu during a visit to the area.

He said that the committee was mandated to investigate and ascertain the true picture of the matter. He explained that the affected area was a pathway between a school and staff quarters of the church.

Dodo further explained that the church decided to fence the school and the staff quarters, thereby blocking the pathway, which had been in existence for more than 20 years.

He said that the committee’s investigation showed that the church did not get permission from the authorities before it fenced the area in question.

PoliticsEkiti: Symptom Of Sick And Dying Country by taiwoflb(op): 9:04am On Dec 02, 2014
Indeed, a new sociology of the Ekiti people may have evolved. However, the task of understanding how the outcome of this election has defined us as a people will be that of scholars. For us as an administration and a cadre of political leaders in Ekiti State, we have fought a good fight. We have kept the faith.” – Kayode Fayemi in a speech to the people of Ekiti State after the June 21stgovernorship election.

“What is Daddy talking about? We’re saying this man would suddenly show up in our garage (Motor Park), sit down with us and order some beer and drink with us and when he’s leaving, would drop about N100,000 for us to share, promising to visit us again. What is my business with his stealing N1.2 billion? I never saw Fayemi since he became governor. He would always roll up his glass (windows) whenever he’s passing through.” – A taxi driver’s response in Ado-Ekiti when asked if he ever thought of Fayose’s poultry scam before he voted for him.
“If you have been defeated in all the 16 local government areas and you now want to come through the window, it won’t be like ice cream party to APC. I would not be too cheap like Segun Oni. I am not going to be cheap at all because I am elected by the people…The strategy of APC will not work. Nobody, no matter how highly placed, will remove me cheaply.”

—Ayo Fayose, then governor-elect, in his reaction to the attack on the Ekiti State High Court and its Judge.

It has been about five months since the governorship election in Ekiti State in which Ayodele Fayose was declared the winner. It was an election that confounded Nigerians, even including Fayemi’s political enemies, probably with the exception of those in the “control room” and their “support staff” on the field on that fateful day who knew exactly what they did to secure victory for Governor Fayose. In normal, sane, socio-politically organized climes, probably more than a dozen books would have been on bookstores by now, attempting to not only educate society about an election that rubbished performance as a factor in electoral choice. These books also would have been somewhat therapeutic for some people who may have been significantly traumatized by the election outcome if only to assist us in finding meaning, if not closure,to an utterly meaningless electoral adventure in a society in which we must live.

For me, a day hardly goes by without reflecting on that election not because I am from the state, or was I part of the Fayemi administration or a government contractor. But because I saw a man who was trying to ‘re-engineer’ his own small corner into modernity under a very excruciating financial condition in a country that is far behind in all indicators of development. I could not stop wondering how a people could be so wrong in choosing between Fayemi and Fayose, more so when the latter gave them nothing but shame and reproach in his first outing. Baffled I was. But also intriguing was the election for me, for it made me to realize the striking contradictions of human complexity that, even as the most intelligent being on this earth, yet possesses the capacity to self-destruct at the same time. I could not but wonder how a people process, determine and store which information they deem important to their well-being. I wonder why Fayemi’s accomplishments, based mostly on what the electorates said they value, did not resonate.

In understanding the “new sociology (and maybe psychology) of the Ekiti people (which) may have evolved,” a task that Fayemi had squarely placed – and rightly so – on the laps of scholars, the epigraphs above should be seen as pointers to how three people that represents different socio-political tendencies (the intellectual elite, the masses, and a cross between the blue-collar and the mob), ensconced in the same geographical space with seemingly monolithic values are so far apart in their world-views concerning how their society should grow.

In a Nigerian society where might is the only right and whoever dies with the most ‘toys’ wins. In a society where logic is derived from illogic and everything senselessare the norms. In an environment where the system frowns at order, organization and methodical approach to anything, I could not stop wondering why Fayemi accepted an election in which the cards were deliberately and fraudulently stacked against him, ab initio, with equanimity. I wonder why he has to cling so tenaciously to those ideals and values that the rest of his society’s stakeholders had concluded to be dinosaurs.

I had thought that the election turned awry in Ikole (where I volunteered to monitor it) because the people in the state’s northern fringe are probably too poor and uninformed to understand the new developmental paradigm of the Fayemi administration. So, I hurried to Ado-Ekiti where I thought the people would advance intelligent reasons why the election nosedived for Fayemi because they’re more enlightened. But the feedback I received from the state capital was shocking.

that I wondered at some point if I was the one who didn’t get it. For instance, why did the driver think that stealing N1.2b by one man was not his business? Why did he not see a correlation between the absence of that huge amount in his society and his station in life? Why did he not see how many lives that amount could positively change forever, including that of his children and other loved ones? What makes sitting with his governor and drinking beer in the public so important to him than someone who would rather be pre-occupied with the problems of the society in which he lives—-and finding solutions? Why does he prefer to be given fish than to be taught how to fish? These are some of the questions that perplexed me.

Perhaps, the most disturbing, if not troubling, of these tendencies is the one exemplified by the new chief of state who had demonstrated, and continues to demonstrate that the rule of law as that veritable and indispensable instrument that society’s growth and development can only be assured has absolutely no place in his worldview. He had appealed to the electorates as a candidate to forgive his past indiscretions and his egregiousness as he had become a changed man. They probably didn’t know that what he meant by being a “changed man” was carefully coded to mean that while he went after individual stakeholders in his first outing, his gaze in his second coming was going to be fixed on subverting state institutions. And any individual who is foolish enough to stand in his way may well consider him/herself as collateral damage in his new round of chaos and anarchy. Aside from his desecration of state institutions, which has started in earnest, the elites must brace themselves for a rabidly anti-intellectual dispensation. A people that chose chicken and rice as their new paradigm for societal development do not deserve any sympathy. They cannot eat your chicken and have it. And since the new chief of state has promised them more of this delicacy in abundance, procured with their own money, and legitimately this time around, a poultry-industrial complex in Ekiti just might be what the economist ordered for job creation.

PoliticsI Don’t Recognise Tambuwal As Speaker – IGP by taiwoflb(op): 8:04am On Nov 27, 2014
Source: .com.ng

The Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, yesterday refused to recognise Aminu Waziri Tambuwal as Speaker of the House of Representatives preferring instead to address him as an ordinary citizen.

Consequently, emotion was let fly as some All Progressives Congress members of the House of Representatives in turn refused to recognise him as the bonafide Inspector General of Police and chose instead to address him as just ‘Mr. Suleiman Abba’.
Abba, who appeared before the House Committee on Police Affairs to explain why the Police locked down the premises of the National Assembly and tear-gassed lawmakers on the 20th November, had insisted that he could not recognise Tambuwal as Speaker because it was a subject matter that was yet to be decided by the court.

“The matter is in court, therefore it will amount to subjudice to refer to Tambuwal as Speaker,” he said in response to insistence from the members that he explain why he chose to address the Speaker simply as “Alhaji Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.”

The IGP, had while addressing the committee on what had transpired penultimate Tuesday, said security mounted at the entrance was disrupted by “suspected thugs that accompanied Alhaji Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.”

He said “intelligence report” that there was going to be invasion of the Complex by “hoodlums” had necessitated the cordoning off of the Complex to forestall unpleasant incidence.

“Following an intelligence report of a likely invasion of the House of Representatives by hoodlums and thugs, the Nigeria Police Force promptly deployed its personnel to the premises to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

“Some of the principal officers called me to confirm the strengthening of the security around the vicinity of the National Assembly and I told them that it was based in credible information that there was a plan to disrupt the parliament, especially with what happened in Burkina Faso; that is why the issue of identifying yourself was made and some of the lawmakers complied until Alhaji Aminu Waziri Tambuwal arrived with thugs or suspected thugs and disrupted all the arrangement,” Abba said.

The comment rankled members, who felt that the office of the Speaker has been denigrated and immediately exploded by interrupting the IGP thus preventing him from continuing his briefs.

First to fire the salvo was Representative Babatunde Juwon (APC, Lagos) who retaliated by addressing the IGP as “Mr. Suleiman Abba” and was followed by other members of the committee who insisted on a walkout unless the IGP retracted what they considered as derogatory to the office of the Speaker, under whom they were constituted as an investigative committee.

The hearing almost became rowdy as member after members insisted on calling the IGP to order arguing that the derogatory comments was not only disrespectful to the Speaker, the members that unanimously elected him, but a stampede on democracy, and must be corrected forthwith.

Chairman of the committee, Usman Bello Kumo (PDP, Gombe)’s attempt to restore order was rebuffed by members, who were visibly angry and spoke loudly in disdain of the IGP for daring to look down on the leadership of the House, on whose behalf the committee was constituted to investigate the incident in question.

Kumo, who attempted to calm frayed nerves, said he won’t sit and allow the office of the Speaker, his person and the integrity of the House to be abused and appealed to the IGP to either deny or assert the initial statement that was thought to have denied the Speaker his rightful recognition.

However, Representatives Chris Etta (PDP, Cross-River), urged members to desist from partisanship in the matter but to see themselves as an investigative panel that will report back to the House based on their findings. He regretted that the ugly incidence of Tuesday, November 22 was a national disgrace that should not be taken with kid gloves.

Similarly, Representatives Victor Nwokolo (Delta) towed the same line, by appealing to his colleagues not to pander to sentiment but remain neutral as a fact-finding body that will report back to the committee of the whole, even as Representative Ahmed Rufa’i Chanchangi insisted that all members will stage a walkout if the IGP refuses to retract.

Abba, who was recently confirmed the IGP, when given the opportunity to amend matters, insisted that since the matter was before the court of law it would be subjudice for him to comment on it. He expressed sympathy for Nigerians who suffered unjustly during the fracas at the NASS where teargas canisters were freely used.

Rather than assuage members’ anger, the IGP’s response further infuriated them, who insisted that the chairman must adjourn the committee. Kumo obliged them and a motion was moved and seconded to bring the hearing to an abrupt end.

PoliticsMahmud Mohammed: Profile Of The New Chief Justice Of Nigeria by taiwoflb(op): 7:38am On Nov 27, 2014
Source: .com.ng

The new Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Mahmud Mohammed who assumed office on November 20, has been described as an intelligent blunt individual, who says things as they are and is not afraid to take unpopular positions on issues once he is convinced that his position is right. He is said to be a gentleman and man, who understands the law, applies it as it is and not given to emotions.

He was born on November 10, 1946 in Jalingo, Jalingo Local Government Area of Taraba State. His father, Mamman Maikato Bakin Kasuwa Jalinggo was a timber dealer while his mother, Aishatu Mamman of Garkin Dogo Village was into petty trading.
Justice Mohammed attended Malam Kasimu Koranic School, Jalingo from 1950 – 53; Junior Primary School, Jalingo and Senior Primary School, Jalingo between 1953 and 1959. He later proceeded to Secondary Technical School/Government College, Kaduna where he obtained the West Africa School Certificate (WASC) in 1964. He later attended Government College/Rumfa College, Kano for his Higher School Certificate (HSC) in 1966.

Justice Mohammed studied Law at the Ahmadu Bello University (1967-70); Nigerian Law School (1970-71); Commonwealth Institute of Legislative Drafting (1976); National Institute of Public Management, Washington, United States (US) (1980); Institute of Judicial Administration, University of New York, US (1982) and Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of London, United Kingdom (UK) (1983).

Muhammed began his career in public service with the Ministries of Justice of the defunct Northeastern State and the judiciary of the defunct Gongola State. In 1991, he was appointed the Acting Chief Judge of Taraba State, and was later confirmed as the Substantive Chief Judge of the state the same year.

Prior to being appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court in 2005, he was Justice of the Court of Appeal, and latter became the Presiding Justice of the court. In addition to his legal qualifications, he holds a certificate in Legislative Drafting (from the Commonwealth Institute of Legislative Drafting); a certificate in Human Resources Planning and Management (from the National Institute of Public Management, Washington, US); a certificate of administration of justice in a presidential system of government (from the Institute of Judicial Administration, University of New York US); and a certificate in government legal advisers course (from the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of London, the United Kingdom (UK).

Lawyers who speak with Daily Independent over Muhammed’s elevation are of the opinion that he fits the bill.

Joseph Nwobike, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria has this to say about him. “One striking feature of the new CJN is that he is a fearless judge, and he is a deep judge in the sense that he listens and does not act on emotions. I expect that, within his vision about the Nigerian Judiciary, he is going to consolidate the gains, which had been recorded under the immediate past CJN. In addition to that, I believe he is going to open up new frontiers that will enhance the overall administration of justice in Nigeria. I expect that there will be innovations. And that the next two years will also witness some level of judicial activism.

He should emphasise discipline among judicial officers and try to ensure that the disciplinary process is fair and those accused of breaching judicial code of ethics are given sufficient opportunity to defend themselves.

He should take a second look at the current Law School education system. And through the Body of Benchers, make certain imputes in order to enhance the quality of lawyers being produced from the Nigerian Law School. I believe he will have his own ideas as to what to do”.

Since all his predecessors were trained outside the country, Muhammed is stepping in as the 15th CJN with the record of being the first indigenously-trained lawyer to rise to the pinnacle of the nation’s judiciary.

All eyes are therefore on him to reshape the Judiciary and surpass the achievements of his predecessor, Justice Mariam Aloma Mukhtar.
Health80% Of Diseases Suffered By Nigerians Due To Open Defecation, Says Official by taiwoflb(op): 11:33pm On Nov 26, 2014
Source: .com.ng

The Deputy Director, Niger Ministry of Health, Hajiya Rakiya Datti, has said that over 80 per cent of diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea, polio and Ebola are contacted through open defecation.

She said children who were vulnerable die daily from the outbreak of cholera, diarrhoea, polio and Ebola, which were transmitted through water and air.Datti made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) in Minna.

She added that if open defecation was not curbed, there would be continuous spread of diseases.

She stressed that “as long as open defecation is not put to an end, the society will be diseased, as there will be infection and re-infection even when government puts more efforts to curtail it.’’

The deputy director added that promotional campaigns and programmes would serve as key to an end to open defecation but creating toilets should be the primary concern of every house builder.

She said “it is the responsibility of the Urban Development Board to ensure that toilets are incorporated in the master plan before any building can take place.

Datti, however, urged the Federal Government and state governments to provide adequate facilities in public places for easy access so as to reduce open defecation in the country.

She also urged private ventures to go into the business of building public toilets that would be monitored by states’ environmental sanitation officials to ensure that they were hygienic and safe for use.

She said “the Build, Operate and Own (BOO) toilet is a source of income to individuals, the government should emphasis on this theory so as to bring about development.

“Environmental health officers, sanitary officers should also have a role to play in the BOO.

“Officers should go to communities to enlighten the people on the dangers of open defecation.

“There should also be law enforcement with appropriate sanction at the federal and state level on open defecation to ensure people adhere to it.’’
PoliticsOrji: I've No Hand In Kalu's Political Misfortunes by taiwoflb(op): 11:22pm On Nov 26, 2014
Abia State Governor, Chief Theodore Orji, has washed his hands off the political setbacks of his predecessor, Orji Uzor Kalu, urging him to do a soul searching of his antecedents.

Kalu had been toying with the idea of picking the ticket for Abia North senatorial seat on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

But last week, he reportedly announced his withdrawal from the race, blaming Governor Orji for shrinking the political space by handpicking candidates.

But the Abia governor denied handpicking candidates for the various elective positions ahead of the 2015 general elections, describing Kalu's allegation as "spurious and the ranting of a drowning man".

Orji, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Charles Ajunwa, noted that Kalu was merely looking for excuses to explain the stark realities of the colossal failure looming before him had he gone ahead to vie for PDP ticket for Abia North.

HealthMaggots Removed From Man's Nose (GRAPHIC VIDEO + Pics) by taiwoflb(op): 11:27am On Nov 24, 2014
If you thought maggots in the ear were bad, you've been warned: this is much, much worse.

In video of an endoscopic procedure that tiptoes the line between medical marvel and pure horror, a patient has live maggots removed from his nasal cavity.
The graphic footage was shared earlier this year by Dr. Meenesh Juvekar, an ENT consultant at Bombay Hospital in Mumbai, India. It is four minutes of stomach-turning terror -- especially when the removed maggots writhe around.

The condition is called myiasis, a parasitic infection of fly larva. According to the CDC, it generally occurs in tropical and subtropical climates. Flies lay eggs in an untreated or open sore, and when the eggs hatch, the maggots begin eating the surrounding tissue.

Not surprisingly, myiasis can be fatal if left untreated. So while this video is not for the squeamish, the doctor probably saved this patient's life.

According to the Daily Mail, the patient in this case was a 55-year-old man who ended up having 50 maggots removed from his sinuses during the two-hour procedure. He is said to have recovered from the infection completely.

Christianity EtcPope Francis Declares 2 Indians, 4 Italians Saints by taiwoflb(op): 10:14am On Nov 24, 2014
Pope Francis on Sunday named two Indians and four Italians as saints, in a mass at Saint Peter’s Square, Rome.
About 5,000 Indians were in Rome to witness the Pope name Kuriakose Elias Chavara (1805-1871) and Euphrasia Eluvathingal (1877-1952), as saints.

Both were from Kerala and members of the ancient Syro-Malabar Catholic Church in southern India.
According to reports, Chavara was founder of the Church’s first men’s congregation and helped start the first women’s congregation. Eluvathingal, also known as Rose, was part of the women’s congregation.
Pope Francis spoke of taking inspiration from their “example of harmony and reconciliation.”
“… Let the Lord give new missionary impetus to the Church in India so that, inspired by their example of harmony and reconciliation, Indian Christians continue on the path of solidarity and fraternal co-existence,” he said.
The Indian Church, which according to tradition dates back to the arrival in southern India of St. Thomas, one of the 12 apostles, accounts for only about two percent of the population.
Reports confirm the the pope also canonized four Italians. They included Amato Ronconi, an early follower of the Franciscan order in the 13th century, and Nicola da Longobardi, a Franciscan from the 17th century.
The other two were Giovanni Antonio Farina, known in Italy in the 19th century as the “bishop of the poor,” and Ludovico da Casoria, who worked to free African children from slavery.
Francis said all six had devoted themselves to the poor, sick and elderly.

Christianity EtcChrist Embassy Faces A N1bn Lawsuit After Pastors Beat Church Member To Coma[pic by taiwoflb(op): 10:03am On Nov 24, 2014
There is an ongoing ‘war’ between U-cheena, Producer of Destiny Child Gospel Talent Hunt and Chris Oyakhilome’s led Christ Embassy Church as the former is pressing charges against some Pastors as well as staff and security of the Church for assaulting her and one of her staff, Mr Daniel.

She had also briefed her team of lawyers who are currently preparing to sue the Ministry in an epoch making case in the history of Christianity in Nigeria, thus demanding a whooping sum of N1bn compensation from Christ Embassy for assault, battery and breach of contract.

Recall that the church has been triggering social media attacks following the recent marital clash between the founder, Chris Oyakhilome and his wife, Anita, which led to the ministry pulling off anything connected with Pastor Anita on both the Ministry’s website and that of Pastor Chris due to some marital differences.

It was gathered that problem ensued after U-cheena rented out her LED screens to the church for the ongoing IPPC program in Lagos.

Findings revealed that U-cheena’sCompany “Eventz.comLimited” rented out its LED screens at a 90 percent discount to the church for a barter arrangement and the Church to bare logistics cost.

Little did U-cheena know that her magnanimity to forego millions of naira in return for the Love World Studio which ordinary cost’s N1,000,000 will turn into a thing of reproach, embarrassment and agonizing pain for her.

In a clear case of paying good back with evil, U-cheenagot more than she bargained for as she was beaten blue back by some top pastors of Christ Embassy Church ordained by Chris Oyakhilome during a squabble that ensued for daring to ask for her full payment before leaving Christ Embassy with her equipment.

Speaking to journalists on Saturday afternoon at the Alausa Police Station, a visibly battered U-Cheena said she was still in shock that people who claimed to be men of God could be so heartless by assaulting a married woman.

Explaining how it all started, U-cheena said, “We gave out LED screen to the church for IPPC programme at a 90 percent discount. However, just two days into the programme, I received a call from one of my staff Daniel, who informed me that one of my LED screens got blown from a power surge.

“When I heard it, I took the next available flight from Abuja to Lagos on Thursday 20th November 2014 to arrange another screen to ensure that we kept to our side of the bargain. Little did I know that my generosity would turn out to be my biggest undoing.”

According to her, “Upon arranging for another LED screen for the Church, I informed those in charge that I must get a full payment of the agreed sum for logistics before I can power the screen on for the programme. They appealed to me to power it as payment will not be a problem.

“When their insistence that I power the screen did not yield any results, they called the Zonal Pastor of my Church, Christ Embassy Abuja, Pastor Chidi to prevail on me to go ahead and power the screen. They went to the extent of involving my Mum, Pastor Duchess, who is also a Pastor with the Church to prevail on me.

“At this point, I conceded and powered the screen on and was there to ensure that everything went well until after the programme which ended at about 5pm.

“I was in shock when Pastor Dave approached me and my staff and said ‘we are only going to pay you for one day only. Go and tear down your screen immediately and give me your invoice.’ I said to him ‘but that is not fair.’

“He got enraged at this point, ordered me out of the Church premises and walked towards his office. I told him I was not leaving until I got my full payment and followed him towards his office as well. He banged the door of his office right behind me. When I attempted to open the door to enter his office, one of the Pastors who was listening to our conversation, Pastor Ayo, pushed me from the door and I fell thunderously to the ground.

“My staff, Daniel confronted the Pastor and asked him why he should push me that way requesting to know if he wanted to kill me. At this point, Pastor Dave ordered his colleague, Pastor Ayo and the security men to throw us out of the Church premises.

“The Pastor pounced on Daniel, aided by some other pastors and members of the Church who came out in droves to beat him up. I received my pound of beating when I attempted to rescue Daniel, whom six ordained pastors of Christ Embassy,Church staff and security held down and threatened to murder. At this point, two security men were in possession of firearms while one of the pastors continually poured a white substance suspected to be a tranquilizer on his face to subdue him. This they did with all enthusiasm and recklessness.”

Speaking further, the battered woman averred that, while screaming for help in the middle of an estimated 20-man mob squad of Pastor Chris Oyakhilome’s church, a female member was also beating her repeatedly.

“My production manager, Ms Ayo and an Abuja Church member, Sister Nonye, who recognised me, helped to rescue me from the Christ Embassy monster squad. In an attempt to record the incident, one of them grabbed my phone and smashed it to the ground beyond repair.

“I headed for the Alausa Police station where I made a formal complaint”, said U-cheena amid sobs and tears.

At the Alausa Police Station, she was subsequently given a letter to go to the hospital where she was treated.

U-cheena added that the CSO to Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, Deacon Ik came with Pastor Dave to give his statement along with Pastor Ayo, who assaulted her and her staff.

They were eventually detained alongside some of the pastors involved in the head-shaking assault.

U-cheena, who until the unfortunate incident was a full time member of Christ Embassy vowed to press charges until she got justice as well as pursue the civil aspect of the matter before a Court of competent jurisdiction.

Already, she said she had briefed her lawyers to commence the process of instituting legal action against Christ Embassy and Pastor Dave.

Speaking to our reporter on phone, Counsel to U-cheena, described the actions of the Church as an act of barbarism, cowardice, inhumane and dehumanization of his client.

He noted that U-cheena is a devoted Christian, a married woman and the MD of Eventz.com Limited.
He said he was shocked when he received a call from his client saying she was physically assaulted by Christ Embassy Pastors.

He added that already the Commissioner of Police of Lagos State had been informed and that a thorough investigation was currently ongoing to bring the perpetrators to justice.

He adding that his chambers was already preparing to file a civil suit against the Church for assault and battery and breach of Contract.

“We have taken the right step. The church is being sued for N1bn damages,” the counsel said.

Efforts to obtain comment from the church could not yield any result as their phones could not be reached as at the time of this report.

HealthAnti-hiv Medicines Can Cause Damage To Fetal Hearts, Research Shows by taiwoflb(op): 12:31pm On Nov 23, 2014
A study by a Wayne State University and Children's Hospital of Michigan, Detroit Medical Center research team is shedding new light on the troubling question of whether the drugs often given to HIV-positive pregnant women can cause significant long-term heart problems for the non-HIV-infected babies they carry.

The study recently published in the journal AIDSshows that while the HIV medications have been successful in helping to prevent the transmission of the virus from mother to infant, they are associated with persistently impaired development of heart muscle and reduced heart performance in non-HIV-infected children whose mothers received the medicines years earlier.

"What our study indicates is that there's potentially a long-term price to be paid for protecting the children of HIV-infected mothers from the virus," said Steven E. Lipshultz, M.D., pediatrician-in-chief at the Children's Hospital of Michigan and chair of pediatrics for the Wayne State University School of Medicine. Dr. Lipshultz is a specialist in the study of long-term toxic cardiac effects among children affected by cancer and HIV drug therapies.

"These medicines have been very effective at reducing the rate of transmission of HIV from mother to child," added Dr. Lipshultz, the lead author of the study, "but the findings we've just published show clearly that further investigation of their long-term impact on the heart health of the children involved is needed.

"Thanks to the new anti-HIV medications, the rate of transmission has been lowered from 26 percent to less than 1 percent during the past few decades, and that has been a miracle of life for the children involved. Still, we don't want to be protecting these children from one disease, only to give them another one."

The study compared heart development and long-term heart functioning in 428 uninfected children of HIV-infected mothers to children who had not been exposed to HIV from 2007 to 2012. The results pointed to a significant association between lagging heart muscle development and impaired pumping ability in the children of the HIV-infected mothers who had received the medications.

"These findings clearly indicate the need for further study," said Dr. Lipshultz, while pointing to one of the study's key conclusions: "Subclinical differences in left ventricular structure and function with specific in-utero antiviral exposures indicate the need for a longitudinal study to assess long-term cardiac risk and cardiac monitoring recommendations."

Dr. Lipshultz, a nationally recognized expert on pediatric cardiac care who 20 years ago led the effort to found the nation's only registry of pediatric cardiomyopathy, said the study is a "compelling example of how clinical research can be effective in helping to shed light on complex problems in pediatric health care."

The Children's Research Center of Michigan team, located at the Children's Hospital of Michigan, involved with this National Institutes of Health-supported multicenter study includes James Wilkinson, M.D., associate director of the center and professor of pediatrics, and research assistant Joslyn Westphal, M.P.H.

Dr. Wilkinson stressed the study "raises the question of how much do we know about the long-term safety of drugs given to children?" He is concerned that "pediatric drug studies remain particularly limited. The lack of information about the long-term safety of drugs prescribed for children is a special worry, both for drugs that may be used for decades for chronic conditions and for drugs for which short-term use may be found to harm children's growth and development months or years later. Although these are effective medicines for children, in order to understand their safety, long-term pediatric safety studies are needed to potentially allow future options for improvement if serious safety risks are identified."

"At the end of the day, our goal at the Children's Hospital of Michigan is to provide the very best possible care for our patients," Dr. Lipshultz said. "Studies like this one are crucially important for meeting that challenge."

Nairaland General‘uncle’ Raped Me For Four Years – 16-yr-old House Help Impregnated By Master by taiwoflb(op): 11:34pm On Nov 15, 2014
No one could have imagined that 16-year-old Gloria (not real name) was just two weeks away from the delivery of a child on September 3, 2014.

“I noticed her neck was full and darker, those were the only signs I saw. So, I asked if she was pregnant. Her expression and answer showed she had no idea she was indeed pregnant,” a neighbour who unravelled the mystery of the pregnancy told Saturday PUNCH.

Gloria, a year one senior secondary school student, lives with his married brother unaware that she was about to become a mother. But buried deeply in the girl’s heart was a painful secret she had never told a soul.

Timid and innocent, she looked at the floor as she spoke softly, delving into the account of a sexual abuse she had gone through in the last five years.

...The exploits of the hunters could signal the beginning of a major revolution in our national life. The subtle declaration of loss of faith in the ability of the government of the day to secure the people’s lives in the face of clear and present danger could rub off on other Nigerians who could now live with the belief that entrusting their future in the hands of the current administration could amount to suicide.
