There has always been an unwritten rule that once any state has up to 40% of Muslims and Christians, such state should have a governor and deputy from both religions. This has always been the rule of thumb until recently.

El Rufai who has never hidden his bigot nature changed that inclusive system and for the first time, he ignored Christians in Kaduna and had a Muslim-Muslim government. Since then, attacks on Southern Kaduna Christians has spiked and no one speaks for them. Having succeeded in that wicked act, El Rufai is once again trying to foist a Muslim-Muslim government in Kaduna. Would Muslims accept a Christian-Christian ticket in Kaduna? Never! Yet they impose it on Christians without conscience. If El Rufai succeeds again this time, then Christians in Kaduna should forget it because they will never stop doing it!

There is no need restating the fact that Northern Christians are suffering severe persecutions in Nigeria. There is another dangerous dimension that is evolving and if allowed to take root, would ultimately result in disaster for the beleaguered people of this region.

There has always been a tradition to respect our diversity and that is why states with Muslim majority and Christian minority will have someone from that religion as deputy and vice versa. This beautiful tradition was what made it possible for a Christian like Yakowa to emerge as governor in Kaduna State when his principal, Namadi Sambo was nominated to serve as Vice President to Goodluck Jonathan.

Unfortunately, El Rufai, a Muslim fanatic who has never hidden his disdain for Christians decided to go for a Muslim-Muslim government in Kaduna State. He disappointedly won on that mandate thereby establishing a dangerous precedent against Southern Kaduna Christians.

Against all wise counsel, Tinubu is now trying to further alienate Northern Christians and perpetuate the perception that they're second class citizens. By going for a Muslim-Muslim presidency, is Tinubu trying to say that Northern Christians are not worthy to be his vice? Or they don't deserve such elevated position?

Is he trying to say that Northern Christians are to be tolerated but not accepted? That they should be seen and never heard?

What wrong have Northern Christians committed to be treated with such utter disdain and disrespect?

Let's even accept that Christians are minority in the North, but is that a crime? The world over, minorities are always represented for justice and equity. So why are Northern Christians being treated so unfairly?

The Way Forward:
Now is the time for Northern Christians to rise and speak with one voice. If Tinubu eventually goes ahead with such dangerous plan by ignoring Northern Christians, then by all means, he should be made to pay for it by ensuring that no Northern Christian will vote for him. Atiku would have been considered as a fellow Northerner but his shameful and irresponsible act of reversing his condemnation of Deborah Samuel's killers makes him undeserving of our votes as Christians. The only option left for Northern Christians is to register and vote en mass for Peter Obi of Labour Party.

Northern Christians should see this as a critical fight for survival. If a Christian candidate decides to be so insensitive to use a fellow Christian, I can bet with all I have that such person would never get votes from Northern Muslims. So, what is good for the goose should also be perfect for the gander.

Bishop Hassan Kukah has been speaking for Northern Christians but this is not his fight alone. Every other bishop whether in Anglican, ECWA, Pentecostal, Catholic, Methodist etc. should all be passionate in advising their members on what to do. There is no shame in telling our members to vote for those that accept Northern Christians and reject those that don't. The good news is that many Church leaders across the Middle Belt, particularly in Plateau, Taraba, Benue etc. are now enforcing their members to get their PVC amongst other advocacy activities. However, we must do more. There are 4 major presidential contestants, 3 are Muslims while only 1 is a Christian, therefore the odds are in our advantage and we must pull our weight in one direction!
